Cleaning a disgusting dishwasher

  • It is so disgusting to open up your dishwasher after it's finished a cycle only to find that your dishes aren't clean. The most likely cause for this is because the filters inside your dishwasher are dirty and instead of washing all the dirt and grime away, it washes back up onto what are supposed to be clean dishes. This video shows you how to clean your dishwasher quickly and cheaply so that you always have clean and sparkling dishes every time!

    Use 1 cup vinegar FIRST which will break up grime and disinfect, set on hottest longest cycle. SECOND sprinkle in 1 cup of baking soda which will deodorize, sent on hottest longest cycle. DON’T MIX. The process will work better when you do them separately😊

    When you mix the baking soda (a base) and vinegar (an acid), you NEUTRLIZE both! Remember your high school or college chemistry?? Do each component separately.

    baking soda can be abrasive on the pumps. Highly recommend Finish Dishwasher clean instead. It has Citric Acid to get rid of scale and mineral deposits. Far more effective than this and safer for the machine.

    This is an EXCELLENT video- but it does beg the question, "if dishwashers are supposed to save me work, and i have to deep clean it once every 8 weeks, and i ALSO have to scoot the crumbs from my dishes under the sink before i put them in the dishwasher.....rendering the dishes 85% clean already before i use the dishwasher.........uh....why do i have a dishwasher?" I am going to get rid of this old thing i think and just wash dishes by hand, and obviate the work/smell/electronic load altogether. Sink, dry rack, done. No plumbing problem waiting to happen, gaskets that don't fit, etc., etc.

      I just soak all dishes and bowls in water immediately after meals then just pour away the water with solids into the insinkerator and put the still oily dishes and bowls into the dishwasher. And by using "Cascade (=Fairy) Platinum" pods, I NEVER EVER have to clean my dishwasher.
      Only people who always put solid food wastes into the dishwashers (believing some "no rinsing" lie) will have to clean the dishwasher periodically.

    Most dishwashers pump out before the cycle starts.
    So start the cycle wait for a minute or two then open the door and add the vinegar. Otherwise some of the vinegar and soda will be pumped out before the cycle even begins.

    • @Dirty_Bear22

      Appliance tech here. Baking soda and vinegar as a cleaner is one of the biggest scientific crimes... when you mix an acid and alkaline together you get salt. The end result of baking soda and vinegar is salt water, absolutely no cleaning properties. Vinegar alone is acetic acid, which overtime eats rubber seals. Pure Citric acid or premade dishwasher cleaner should be used to remove hard water build up, some dishwasher cleaners also have detergent to break down residual grease.

      @@Dirty_Bear22 What about getting rid of mold? You can clean all the external parts, but mold still exists in all the plumbing. Is there a way to get the internal pipe surfaces free of mold residue?

    • @Dirty_Bear22
      @Dirty_Bear22 3 года назад +2

      @@johnds1963 Mold gets killed in hot temperatures. Run the dishwasher with affresh dishwasher cleaner on the longest hottest cycle, if your dishwasher has a sanitize option use that as well. Sanitize cycles use 155 degree water for one or more hours, more then enough to kill any possible mold.

    The baking soda will neutralize the vinegar (hence the fizzy reaction), so that vinegar is not going to do any cleaning. Do one or the other, but not both.

    How do I clean my older dishwasher

    • @DoItFrugal
      @DoItFrugal  2 года назад

      Donna, depending on how old the dishwasher is, I would look online to see if you can find the instruction manual (if you don't have it already), then I would find out how to disassemble the filter and clean that thoroughly in hot soapy water. For me, anything that I could disassemble and take out of the dishwasher to clean them, I would do. But you want to consult the instructions first, so that you don't unintentionally break anything or get water where it should be. Following that, wipe down the inside of the dishwasher with hot soapy water, as much as possible, to remove any built up scum. Once you've done that, I'd use the vinegar and bi-carb soda to deodorise any lingering odours. Hopefully you find this information helpful.

    Mine still smells bad even after all this. Must be something in the tubing deeper than the exterior

    • @DoItFrugal
      @DoItFrugal  2 года назад

      There some dishwasher cleaners that you can buy from the store that may help with this. I haven’t had a problem . Perhaps using one of those might help get the lingering smell to go away, as they contain harsher chemicals that can break down any nasties down the tubes that keep your dishwasher from smelling fresh.
