I never knew about the lower filter until I watched this video. I used a cleaning pod last month and the upper filter came out OK. When I used this technique, I was pleasantly surprised that the lower filter wasn't too dirty after 2 years, but definitely needed to be cleaned. Glad I watched! Thanks, Paulie
Thank you so much for this video. I discovered the dirty filters, both of them about a year ago and I'd only had my dishwasher for a year at that point in time. I was just getting ready to order dishwasher cleaner and decided I would come on here and look and see if I could find a way to clean my dishwasher out naturally. Thank you you for the vinegar idea I will do that right now. I really appreciate you..
Thank you so much for this video. I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't clean that second filter. It was gross. I'm embarrassed. Now it's clean, and I set a reminder on my phone to clean it once a month. I will read my owner's manual from now on, and I won't just put it in a drawer and not read it.
OMG yes. I was having problems with bits of crud being left behind so went on a cleaning investigation. It's a royal pain on my dishwasher, requiring a Torx bit to remove the rinse arm before the second filter can be removed. Thanks for the vinegar tip. We'll be adding that to our maintenance schedule!
I always rinse all food off my dishes before running the dishwasher. I do run a clean cycle for the machine several times a year, but have never had any problems in the past twenty odd years. No stray bits of food etc.
I am almost scared to clean mine…. Thank you so much for sharing this. I never knew this, and this is a rental and he never knew it and the machine is quite old. I regularly run it with OxiClean or bleach a few times a month. But I know that problem with sitting water. It only takes a few hours before bacteria grows and thrives. I do remember the old days when it had a garbage disposal instead of filter. UPDATE: OK that was not as bad as anticipated. The lower filter had some gnarly black spots of gnarly bacteria. That will go away with bleach. The top was getting congested with the glue from labels. I will be so happy to have this sterilized going forward. The device does contain a cup of swamp water (looks clean and clear ) underneath the filter. So after a wash is done, I am definitely going to leave some bleach in the dishwasher to keep it sterile in that water bin.
I admire how you are able to just touch things without feeling ick/disgust about it. I think I have contimination OCD or something. I have strong feelings of disgust even with gloves on. It’s a mental hurdle to overcome every time I have to clean almost everything. I do suppose it would be good for you to wear gloves when dealing with chemicals, though? (Thinking of your easy off video, although idk the ingredients of the fume-free… the original smells gross though and I would never use it without gloves, for safety). Anyway, thanks for the video! The thought of using my apartment dishwater (that others who lived here before me used) without cleaning the filter grosses me out, but the thought of cleaning the filter of a dishwasher that others used for God knows how long also grosses me out. Pray for me, gonna put this on my to do list. Thanks for reading my rant lol.
It’s strange how different things gross different people out. I can handle toilets and things like that filter. But as soon as a stranger (human) has a bloody injury or is just sweating I’m NOT touching them. 😂
If the dishwasher doesn't drain completely, check the float in the righthand corner by the door. It can get gummed up and not slide up and down like it's supposed to.
The hardware section in stores such as walmart and target have a screen cup that fits into sink drain and stops clogging. Kinda yucky to empty screen cups but worth it. Wish i could show you a pic of the filters they are very inexpensive and worth their weight in gold. Love this video and thank Abbots at Home for posting it.
I have an old whirlpool dishwasher and opposed to newer ones the filter does not come out . Manual suggests using paper towels to remove debris from filter drain, if drain holes are clogged clean those out and run 2 cup of white vinegar thru washer which im doing now and I can see already glasses are cleaner. I also did use your tip of making sure hot water is at the sink as my hot water heater is at opposite end of my home. Hopefully this will correct my problem.
Just another tip.... Put vinegar in your rinse aid dispenser when you run your dishwasher. Everything will look and smell better. Also, when cleaning your dishwasher, make sure to wipe the door gasket and inside door edges down with vinegar to prevent mold. Then, I always clean the outer door, handle and control panel with a mild cleaner per manufacturer instructions.
Hi! Vinegar is great for certain jobs and limited use in a dishwasher. Like when I use it to run an empty dishwasher. I’d be careful about using undiluted vinegar on gaskets and rubber parts. Check out this Bob Vila blog post to see why Vinegar shouldn’t be used on rubber: www.bobvila.com/slideshow/15-things-you-should-never-ever-clean-with-vinegar-73031
Well…having used vinegar in dishwashers forever (now age 74) I can confirm that none of the gaskets have died before the dishwasher itself does…ditto for washers. I have an 8 year old Bosch DW…very happy with it I have a recent GE clothes washer 3 y,o. And regularly use vinegar in lieu of commercial softeners or rinse aid. You can do as you like but I refuse to waste money on expensive rinse aid or DW cleaners, as they appear completely unnecessary. I may dilute the vinegar slightly (say 25% water) as a concession to new methods.
If you're lucky enough to have access to a garden hose, try this: take the filters outside, and use the power of the garden hose to rinse the filters. The force of the water from the hose is much greater than that from the kitchen tap. Works like a charm! Takes only a matter of seconds. Of course, I can't do this in winter weather.
My preggo self getting ready to clean my filters for the first time, but gaging so much seeing that 2nd filter, that I'm not sure I can do it 😂. I hate when you find secondary filters you didn't know about
Household vinegar really only helps with scale. Run with vinegar followed by sodium carbonate (washing soda). Put a cup in bottom of dishwasher and run a normal cycle. The carbonate will break down the fats and greases left behind. That’s mostly what you are seeing under the second filter.
I only wish I had your example to clean. 🥺 Alas, after trying this + trying that, the thing that finally got the sticky greasy stuff off, was soaking the outer cylinder filter in nearly boiling water… on the stove, in a bunch of dish soap + a lot of vinegar. When the ‘scum’ finally softened [and I use that word lightly] I got my toothbrush in there to get the remaining ‘gunk’ out. I am exhausted. 😑🤪
I rinse my dishes with a brush before they go in the dishwasher. I don’t think I will find my filter being that dirty but I will check just to make sure.
Some dishwasher makers do not advise using vinegar . Mine is Bosch & they say do not as it can cause the rubber gaskets & inner parts to erode . Be sure to check your manual for their particular recommendations ! If you don’t have the manual or can’t find it like me , lol . Call them or go online and get those questions .
I don't rinse and my filters are never dirty if I use Finish or Cascade. I pull them out every so often and they're never dirty. If I use a cheaper or liquid, they get slimy
That's the overflow protection valve. It sounds like it might have a little mold under it. You can use something like the bottle brushes made for cleaning inside straws to clean under it. Just use an all-purpose cleaner, a little vinegar in water, OR hot water and a little dish soap to clean under the flying saucer. :) Good luck!
Great informative videos very helpful thank you. One thing, why aren't you wearing gloves? All that contamination can absorb through your skin into your body?
I did not have white vinegar so I used ACV! I hope it doesn’t mess up anything but I was so horrified at the gunk I found that I could not wait another day when stores are open. OMG!
You forgot to clean one thing, which is in gray color and it is close to the filter, if you lift it up you will have another surprise to see lots of Grease
The hot temperature of the water in a dishwasher plus the acidity of the vinegar work together to kill bacteria, germs, breakdown oils and soap scum, etc. Normal water won't do any of that. And, hose water isn't safe for drinking, so you may be introducing other organisms doing that. I'd be careful. :)
@@AbbottsAtHome I ran the Vinegar hot water wash after hosing them off. To your point I didn't want to wash those off in the sink. Too much grease going down the drain that will clog the drain.
Vinegar will destroy your Dishwasher Pumps and Seals. Use a Commercially Available Dishwasher Cleaner or Citric Acid. I have saltwater aquariums and it is well known in the hobby the damage Vinegar can do. Also don’t use it in your Clothes Washer. Also clean your Filters when you refill your Rinse Aid, as it’s a good indicator of when too do this.
If used properly and not too often, vinegar is safe for cleaning most dishwashers. My manual specifically recommends it. But, if people are pouring the vinegar into the dispenser or directly into the bottom of the machine, they'll eventually dry out and break gaskets, rubber parts, and seals.

“Gunk” drinking game. I kid. Great video and I’ll be doing the same once I get some vinegar.
If gunk doesn’t work I have some videos where I have to carefully and repeatedly say caulk a lot. People seem to enjoy that one. 😂😂
