I think one of the reasons why hobbies can be so healthy and enjoyable is because it disconnects us from our ego. Let's say you're fishing, you're sitting out on a lake in a boat. When you are in that moment just focusing on exactly where you are, immersed in the beautiful scenery, who's observing that event? It doesn't matter if you're a famous celebrity or a college student who's struggling to get by, when you're completely in that moment you just exist. You don't have to be someone, you don't have to live up to your or anyone else's expectations, you're just a person on a boat. Or when you get captivated watching an amazing sunset, what does it matter if you're rich or homeless, if you're seeing it that's all there is to it. Having a hobby that takes us back into true reality, one that removes all of the mental constructs we have set up regarding ourselves and the rest of the world - is freeing.
@@DailyStoic Exactly. We all struggle under the sun. And to have that pure form of gradual learning that's often times very slow and requires loads of trail and error, perhaps somthing like learning to play the piano, it sets us all back to zero and cuts through all the bullshit. No matter who we are or where we are in our life.
I rarely comment on videos, that being said I do want to thank you for the valuable contents that you have created. As Alan Watts said, the point of the dance is the dance itself, it is not to land on a specific position or location.
I'm a knitter, and it's a meditative practice, very rhythmic. Knitters are generally either product or process knitters. I have a need to knit, even though I don't always care about the product I create. Just give it away to family and friends. Sometimes I do want the sweater, or shawl or whatever, but the process is at least 50% of the practice. It's very calming. And my friends and family get to wear hand-knit socks!!
Oh man it’s true. I magnet fish and practice an odd style of beekeeping. Both hobbies get me into nature where I can meditate, calm down, and stop worrying about tomorrow and not allow my joy to be robbed today.
"If you exhaust the mind, it breaks." (Seneca) Never heard that one before. Interesting. The importance of taking a breather if you are stuck on a problem, just go away and do something else, or even drop it until the next day, to come back fresh.
I have had several things I do, having done them for years, pipe smoking, target shooting, and hiking. What I do with these things is not what I make of them, but what they tell me about myself. Surprising about the metaphor used by Stoics regarding archery. Target shooting is about how the process brings me to focus, that only part of the total goal is within my control. Magnet fishing, what an idea.
I used to have a small sailboat. As soon as I was aboard and was sailing away from shore I felt my mind shift and become separate from my thoughts ashore. I entered a different world.
I draw. I draw because it allows me to escape this reality. It allows me to concentrate, to be patient. It allows me to think about the decisions that I have to make when I'm making a portrait. Of course there is a result. The result is to create the best work that I can while I'm having fun. Fun is the essence of it all.
So true. I find leisure activities like walks, biking, drawing, making music and video games. Many people think video games are a waste of time but I use it to escape, free my mind and it allows me to get into a flow or meditative state which often helps me process the day and helps me get past obstacles. The challenge is not beating yourself up about it 🙃
Reminds me of why I loved surfing so much. You'll see even high level competitive surfers, go surfing on holiday. They don't want to 'win' something, and the competition side is so artificial. Myself, I was surfing one day, feeling frsutrated because waves weren't very big, and I saw two adolescents having the greatest fun. Suddenly I realised I'd turned something fun into something where I had to gain something. Suddenly I switched off and just had fun, and a huge smile returned to my face. The best life is a fun life. Need to get this in all my life.
Hobbies are extremely important, puts us in a calm state much needed during stress in our life. I see it as an act of mindfulness. For me my hobbies are working out, reading, learning other languages, and watching films with friends.

I had a lot to do yesterday. I needed to wrap Christmas presents and a few other things. But it was my first day off in quite a while. I spent a lot of it playing StarCraft 2. My struggle is getting past the guilt of not being productive. Thank you for this video.
Its all good to play games for yourself too. Especially if it was your first day off in a while. Do everything in balance - something I am working on as well! Happy holidays everyone
Motorcycle riding is very relaxing and at the same time it is very intense. All of your senses are on fire as you move through time and space. The sights, sounds, and feeling refresh my soul.
Nothing defines you and establishes your being more authentically, than what you do without reason, want or need; external or internal; biological, social or otherwise. A practice/activity you engage in regularly, without any expectations, without any reason, but for its own sake; one the most important things you can do to keep yourself sane this world.
Now I understand why I had to find another hobby once my hubs started making orders for my handknit sweaters! It wasn't leisure anymore. Once I sold a painting I suddenly didn't feel like painting anymore.
I am an old woman and new to this philosophy. I find it fascinating, and it resonates with my understanding of life. I must say that music is a hobby to me, even tho I don't play an instrument. I have songs in my head all the time and make up songs about what I might be doing at the moment. When something goes wrong, I start singing about it. It helps me soothe any anger I might feel and makes it disappear because it is useless. What I learned today is that I want to pick up the guitar someone gave me and just start playing -- make mistakes and laugh at how bad I will be. But I have music in my soul all the time. Just sayin'.
Well done. My hobby does all of this and glad to have some re-enforcement that does not need to lead to something, such as $, recognition, etc. Thank You!
Don't think "just" hearing music isn't a real, practical hobby, because you would be wrong with this opinion. It's like everything else in someone's life, it's (power it can give you, is) about how you handle it and use it actively for. I'm listening to (dark) ambient music, with or without beat, but always without lyrics/few spoken words, because that kind of music wants to induce specific feelings in the listener and I rather prefer to choose mine. There's ambient music for any situation in your life out there and listening to it actively, with your heart and soul, supports an inner strength and power of will, that is uplifting, clearing, healing, focusing and whatever else you are longing for. Just give it a try, its about what you're making out of it. 😉
I just have to say I love all of your videos and I realize what you're talking about is what I learned in child development which is understanding children's play you should look into that it's really fascinating to understand the value of play for children
I’ve been loving these more personal videos coming out. It makes me feel more attentive when listening to your other videos. Also I need to find the music in these videos!
