Thank you Ryan holiday..I appreciated..Great value
Excellent discussion! Inspiring. Thank you. Keep it up.
Looks like an uphill battle to convince today's population, especially, to read. But the few who will respond and recognize the value and wisdom of your encouragement will prosper in ways they can't imagine.
Reading is such a beautiful way to experience the depths of life and the wisdom of a thousand lives, in our one. The transformations that are possible within our own minds are amazing, and people are only missing out by making excuses.
As a former youth services librarian and concerned, involved parent and volunteer: THANK YOU!
Hey Ryan. Obviously I know you are all about Stoicism but would be curious to hear what you think about the wisdom of Jesus and the early Christian texts/authors. Even if you don’t fully believe or align with the Christian tenets I don’t think you can deny the wisdom of Christ if you spend time studying what he said/taught.
Any tips on maintaining the categories online? Edge has "Collections" but I find that no matter how many sub-folders I create, I lose track of them. Basically, the idea would be to take your note cards and leave them online (similar to EverNote).
@Olin Rose-Bardawil Just be an atheist. Religion sucks.

Great quote
I like that quote. I think that often. whenever I'm aware enough and have a problem I'm like, "ok I'm not the first to have this problem and definitely not the last. What can I do or who can I contact to find an answer and skip some BS."

I'm grateful I found your books and channel, thanks for all your work, Ryan.
I work twelve hour days and still read fifty three books last year. My trick is to almost go into a meditative state while reading. Focus on your breathing whilst reading. It will help you block out other distractions.
Set yourself a goal for how much you wish to read each day, and don’t struggle through books that don’t interest you. Persevere for maybe twenty percent, but if the book isn’t lighting a fire inside you, bin it. You don’t want reading to be a chore. Maybe you can come back to it another day, or maybe the book is just not for you.
Solid advice!!
@@olaolumatemilola3944 thanks man.
thanks!
@@bigmonsieurp.3564 no problem man. Enjoy.
How did reading books change your life?
Imagine how many books the average person could read a year if they spent all the time they spent reading nonsense on social media (including this comment) on reading books instead
I stopped reading this comment after 5 words and got back to my books. What is it about?
I deleted all social media on 12/19/2020 and have read 11 books so far in 2021. So to answer your question, a lot!!
@@CVo83 Love it! Sounds a great decision
@@CVo83 Damn i deleted all of mine the week before that!!
@@funkXCIV nailed it.
(Unfortunately, I'm still not reading, but I *will* be writing in about 10 minutes).
100 books per year is 2 per week ! That sounds like a lot! and 200 is crazy a lot ! I have set a goal for myself for 20 this year...I am on track so far.
You can do it mate. I set a goal for thirty-five last year, figuring that’s approximately a book every ten days, I ended up with fifty three for the year after Covid supercharged my reading habits. I wanted to improve on that, so this year I’m aiming for sixty books. I’ve got ten in the bag already. Twenty is a great number to start with. Just aim for two per month. I recommend you set your goal on the goodreads app. It’ll help you keep track of the books and it’ll make you excited about new books. Good luck with your challenge.
Honestly, I don't set a number for the books I want to read. Instead focus on properly absorbing the information and implementing it in real life. I also spent quite a bit of time reflecting on what I read.
@@mansoorwahab8934 yeah mate, that’s the way to do it. I just set myself a goal because I found myself spending too much time on social media and other habits that are not so healthy so I wanted to create a reading habit, I guess. There are are a lot of books that I plan to read a second time and take my time with.
I am a prisoner...using my time to read 100 great books for the next 5 years ...till I finish doing my time....I dont know what I will become after reading these books but I want to try....

Got wiser today, by watching this video 💪🏻🚀🌟
I been going through a dramatic shift in my life, I pretty much lost everything. Finding the daily stoic and purchasing your translating of Mediations has been very helpful. Thank you Ryan, You dont know me but your work has been life changing for me.
This video should be compulsory to watch in every school curriculum! Absolutely mindblowing stuff.
I agree :)
Looking forward to watching this. Reading is definitely an art. It’s not as simple as looking at words. We need to absorb their wisdom in order for the application to serve us in our own lives.
Rekindled my love for reading last 2018.. This year alone, I managed to read 8 books now since switching to a Kindle. It totally rewired my brain.
8 books in 2021? Daaaaamn
@@Bilbus7 its totally doable!! I dedicate 1-2 hours of reading everyday, atleast I try to 😅
2020 was definitely the year for any serious self reflecting person to become a recluse and get into their thoughts by reading books. I read countless books during this pandemic. I’m doing all of the classics. Currently reading The Brothers Karamazov. I read Meditations before it - which is how I found this channel
Make time to read. If you don't do this, you won't.
Don't focus on number of pages. Read at a pace where you can you truly absorb the material.
Take notes. It'll slow you down. So what. If you don't take notes, you are only reading for entertainment. I do notecards as well, but notes in a composition book is a fantastic start.
Don't read only light books. Don't read only heavy books. Read widely. Read outside your immediate interests. Nonfiction educates you; fiction expands your mind, your vision. Read poetry. Really.
Great video on The Why of reading. And some good pointers on reading more rigorously.
Hey guys! I'm from Chile and I really grateful with Ryan because he inspired me to think and reflect about my daily. I really appreciate the knowledge he gift us.
My english is not very well but I practice every day for learnd more so thanks to Ryan for show me who was Marco Aurelio and his filosofy about the stoics
I read 50 books a day- but at one page minimum each; it stimulates my memory and imagination when I surmise wht may happen next. I read books in French Spanish and English. definitly soften solitude, put facts and people in my mind. People often compliment me on my culture and knowledge - I told them read and read more- there is no magic. Still I feel there is so much to know. I read in the mornings, during my meals and in the evenings. Life is beautiful.
I read 50 words a day- but at one letter minimum each. Mainly RUclips comments.
No one on the planet believes you are cycling through 50 different books a day
@@mikejunior5825 One page each at a minimum - not the whole book one page of each 50 books.
@@belamoure yeah, I understood. That seems insane and extremely inefficient. “Ooo that was an interesting page that took 1 minute to read! Welp, time to read 49 different other topics and stories!”
"Reading is a moral duty"
This is great! Marvellous.
My professional life is transitioning so, of course, I began to write a non-fiction and voila! there was a book! I'm making final changes and I really like the content. I was a stoic and didn't know it! Thanks, Ryan, for all you do.
The value you provide for free is unbelievable. Thank you so much Ryan and keep doing what you do. Much love from Austria
I agree.
Btw how is living in Austria?
@@vincivedivicilextalionas4036 it's absolutely amazing, I'm so greatful to have been born here. I think it's up there with scandinavian countries in term of social security and quality of life.

@@vincivedivicilextalionas4036 It's absolutely worth the visit, just don't mistake the viannese peoples rudeness with the rest of the country. Some of them think they are the heir to the emperor himself lol
How is Kentucky?
I already read a lot, but this gets me amped to take my reading addiction to a whole new level, thank you sir!
What are some of your best books?
Thank you so much for this Ryan. You’ve reignited a passion in me that I had long thought was dead. ❤️
Beautifully put. After being brain fried from my career, now in my retirement I have rediscovered my love of books. So many books, so little time. I’m grateful.
Thank You Mr.Ryan for this video. Please never stop making such videos. Lots of Love Respect from India 🇮🇳 to you and your family ❤️🙏.
Your videos are worth watching and reflecting on over and over again. Thank you Mr. Holiday for all the great advices you present and teach.
Bro, You’ve helped so much in so many ways you can’t imagine! Reading is breathing wisdom and beauty!
My goodness, I’ve just discovered your videos and they so resonate with me. As a former librarian and present teacher, I love your message! Thank you.
Thank you for reminding us how people were denied the privilege of reading … the privilege of gaining knowledge. I am a forever learner as result of this reminder. Thank you.
Actually,I really love reading books🖤
I spend more than 7 hours reading books cuz books are the best friends of a human being😊
‘’Widening our knowledge is the best action ever in the world’’
I used to read a lot of books, but didn't really remember as much as I thought, so I started to focus more on understanding than book counts. 1-2 books a month is the sweet spot for me. Sorry I am just slow.
i absolutely love your perspective on re-reading books. i always thought re-reading was a terrible idea because there are so many new books to read, but after re-reading a few, i agree completely!
I’ve been reading for years and was able take away a lot form this. Thank you Ryan. At first I thought this note card and catalog was extreme. I’ve used variations as we all likely have. What I took away from this video, and started implementing after reading your Obstacle is the difference book something I will likely revisit with a lot of the books I already read. I made notecards from the sections I highlighted and categorized them with page number in the corner of each. I then taped them to inexpensive small poster boards and essentially created a “scrolls” of the book that can be rolled up and unrolled anytime I want to revisit the book. The “scrolls” can be pinned on a wall or placed on a table. I identified cards with best highlights and placed them together on the scrolls. This works for me and I’ll likely have scrolls made for a-lot of the books I’ve read in the past. This makes it more visual for me, using Human centered design. Thanks for the ideas Ryan.
My life is changing because of your influence.
Another example of the stoic engaging a topic that they are truly passionate about. I like this and the "meditations" video because I feel this is the work the Ryan really lives in. The pursuit of knowledge and wisdom.
These videos are so informative and helpful, Ryan. Thank you for taking the time to make them and share them.
Hey, your "background" music is a bit too loud, it distracts from listening to what you're saying. Besides that, the video is pure gold. Thanks!
Thank you, Ryan. Just thank you so much🙏
Thank you Ryan for pushing us to read more.
Wonderful, Ryan, so beautifully true you made me cry.
Since I started reading books I began to feel motivated and energised and literally I can kick start my day and 🙏 for uploading such an informative stuff
this video moved something inside my heart
Thank you Ryan.
This was surprisingly deeper than I thought it was going to be. Thank you Ryan.
I had a similar experience with Walden as you had with Gatsby. Reading it in different eras of my life has been uniquely impactful.
So so happy I’ve found your channel!!!
I love the practicality and no nonsense attitude of these ideas, based on theoretical, philosophical principles
Needed this. Thanks.
Thank you. Thank you so much for your videos. They are really helping me on my path to becoming the greatest version of myself. Thanks bro.☺️👍🏼🙏🏼😄🥳
Awesome Video ... I love reading and implementing ideas learned from books.
I am so grateful I found your channel and it's amazing teachings. Thank you for putting out this information as the world is currently suffering from a much more harmful pandemic, which is what referred to as "functional illiteracy". It's killing true purpose in life. Thank you again.
Love this channel!!! keep the content coming
Thank you Ryan, this is very helpful to me at this point in my life. Thank you.
Wow! In this video, your passion for books, reading, learning, exploring, improving shines like the brightest star! Thank you for the inspiration! I'm so glad I found your channel!
Also a quote that's on a fridge magnet I have: *There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them.* -Ray Bradbury
Awesome video, thank you!!
Love this...thanks
Hey Ryan,
I found this video very inspiring! Thank you for the great tips!
Editing makes this video even more interesting!! Informative and useful content as always.
This is probably the greatest advise on reading on RUclips. Thanks Ryan
A great reminder. And the inspiring boost I needed. Finished ‘leadership...’last week... made ton of notes, have an overawing respect for LBJ. Like a benevolent Frank Underwood!
Thanks for you work Ryan!
Thank you Ryan
This channel should have millions of subscribers thank you for sharing such great content
I have read 3 books this year ( last month) and now on my 4th and 5th books. This is encouraging !
Thank you for being a great teacher
My top five:
Meditations ; Marcus Aurelius
Man's search for meaning: Viktor Frankl
12 rules for life: Jordan Peterson
AA big book: bill w and Dr. Bob plus others
The obstacle is the way: Ryan Holiday
Not necessarily in that order.
I really enjoy you 😃I feel the same way when I read a book it just comes alive 😌and it does feel like a conversation with the author🌷
The video I've been waiting for! Thank you for the effort Ryan, looking forward to giving this my full attention. One tip you already gave me by e-mail (paraphrase): don't beat yourself up if you can't get through a book. Some books aren't right for some people. Better to invest your time in books you get something out of.
Saved me so much time and helped me better invest my time in literary work!
I don't have time to read!!! I'm watching Daily Stoic videos all day!!! LOL
This channel is a goldmine.
Insprirational. I really the message. I love reading. I don’t have a formal educational, but reading and my determination to keep reading has allowed me to move forward in ways that wouldn’t have happened had I taken another path. My girls love reading because of that influence. Awesome video
Thank you so much for highlighting authors of color. It means a lot to me.
Powerful!
Thank you
You should make a whole video on retaining information. I find that my biggest challenge when trying to read a lot is solidly remembering what I read and applying what I read into my life.
It definitely helps if you annotate
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!
This is a very motivational video, thanks a lot for doing it bro!!!
Thank you so much for this video. I just read Witness by Whittaker Chambers and realized we are going through the same thing today. What is old is new again.
Thank you for this helpful video
I discovered reading this year during lockdown. I was furloughed for over 8 months. Read a book called “the house of sand and fog” by Andre dubus II, was incredible. Also read through the last wish and the sword of destiny by Andrzej Sapkowski, starting the Witcher novels, and lord of the rings and the hobbit. I love fiction, and when I open those pages I feel like I’ve been transported to a completely different world, and that is pure magic. My nan, who has read thousands of books, always says, the more you read, the more you realise you haven’t read.
Thank you, Ryan! 💛 🌊
Great info. Food for thought
Thank you!
Thank you for the time and effort... keep it up
mind blowing video ❤️
Reading as a moral duty really hit me like a truck. What a beautiful perspective.
This is truly inspiring!
it's fair enough to say that at this point we really want to have a tour of this great place.
thanks, Ryan
Really excellent video. Interesting, thought provoking, helpful.
I just ordered the 'Obstacle is the way'. It is my 2nd book that i am going to read.
Thank you.
I think this video just changed my life
I am going to read your books first Ryan Holiday, and Robert Greene's. Once I finish that I will read all those book recommendations and business books. This is really helpful since I've gotten into the habit of reading everyday even just a few pages whenever I'm busy. I watched speed reading and definitely not for me! I just don't get to argue / interview / talk with the book because of speed reading and I eliminated that.
I will also start on reading Stoicism and Philosophy books. Thank you again! will save this in my watch later list to rewatch.
the idea of a reading practice has been so powerful
15-20 pages a day is a good starting point to get back into it. Just enough to start getting through it, but not so much that you skip days.
Man your so incredibly inspiring. :)
Thank you 🙏
Reading in the morning with a spouse sounds like the most romantic thing I've ever heard.💓
Excellent as always Ryan!
The pandemic cluttered my brain in 2020 to where I fell off my reading wagon. When making my goals for 2021, I wrote down a promise to read a minimum of ‘2 pages every day’. I like being back on the wagon ride 😊. BTW, Stillness Is The Key is the book for the 2021, helped brain declutter.
I like that you read both a daily Shakespeare book and a daily Tolstoy book. Very balanced. Tolstoy famously hated the works of Shakespeare.
Reading helped me alot and i try to force myself to do it every day even though it can be a process.
I stuggle with certain paiges aswell until i soaked them in completly, even reading them over 10 times over and over again.
Reading gives you peace and wisdom when you grid your teeth into it i share this opinion.
Good video and good advices
Reading more are for those who have the luxury of time. Try working 5 days a week having to deal with office politics. The only way I will read is if the book is really interesting. Besides that I am busy writing in my journal in the morning and passing out on the train on my way home.
