- Did you know that intelligence goes beyond just your IQ? Right within your mind, there is an even greater and more powerful level of intelligence just waiting for you to tap into. It’s known as ‘emotional intelligence’ and by mastering it, you can use it to better all areas of your life. On this episode of Conversations with Tom, psychologist and New York Times bestselling author Daniel Goleman, Ph. D, joins Tom Bilyeu to discuss such matters and more as they explore why it’s critical you become self-aware of your emotional intelligence and begin to develop it, all while pursuing your purpose and meaning in life. They discuss what emotional intelligence and emotional IQ is, how you can develop and strengthen it at any age, the power of practicing meditation regularly, how purpose and meaning is critical to leading a successful life, the common traits of successful leaders, why you need to have empathy, optimism, love and kindness, and so much more.

QUOTES:
“…no matter what meditation you’re going to do, if you do it regularly, it does two things. It calms you, it makes you less triggered less often and when you’re triggered, you’re not triggered so intensely and you recover more quickly, that’s the calm, and it also focuses you. Meditation is a direct training of the mind in paying attention…” [17:39]
“Cognitive control is a stronger predictor of your adult life than your childhood IQ or the wealth of the family you grew up in.” [1:17:18]

The way Tom keeps interrupting Dr Goleman is emotionally hijacking my amygdala.
😅😅😅same!
I was just about to complain about that too. He did the same thing in the Robert Greene interview!
)ruclips.net/video/x-1rZ_jlPrg/видео.html
I had my amygdala taken out so I don’t have that problem 😳
Not a good way of driving things. Looks like he is very egoistic
“Emotional self-control-- delaying gratification and stifling impulsiveness- underlies accomplishment of every sort” - Daniel Goleman
Tom I respect your chanel and the work you do and I want to aks you to kindly wait for your guests to answer whatever you're asking them. Sometimes you get very excited about a subject and at the end of the day you talk more than your guest.
Totally AGREE . that is the reason Tom invites someone to the show, let them to talk
This is called “conversations with Tom” The entire purpose of it is to dig down to the questions HE wants to ask and have a real conversation and to challenge people in real conversation. It’s the whole reason he made this apart from impact theory!
tom, give Daniel the talking stick!

It's amazing how Daniel Goleman becomes an interviewer and Tom the Interviewee in the middle of the conversation.
Choice ruclips.net/video/17-j4BbfKD0/видео.html
It’s incredible actually because it proves his emotional intelligence and maturity. If a conversation is focused on one individual it makes the relationship feel surface level. Asking people questions who ask you questions helps solidify trust and a bond with that person.

Terrific info!
I was impressed by Daniel Goleman attitude. He really showed what empathy is during all the conversation till the point that he starts asking questions to Tom to show how he is interested in the other person! That's a great man and professional, even when Tom is a bit too impatient with his questioning something that could have disturbed more than one interviewee in a normal situation.
Daniel is an exquisite person.
Ll
Every interview is about Tom. He always go to me me me me.
Yeah, I just purchased a book called Emotional Self-Awareness by Daniel Goldman and other authors and it was only $4! There are alot of ways to improve in emotional intelligence.
I liked when Daniel (interviewee) tuned into an interviewer, to show to Tom how to handle the interviewing process properly. it pays off immediately and Tom start to give enough space and time for Daniel to finish his statement.
Tom, I really enjoy your interviews and I am just as impatient as you but you might want to consider letting Daniel finish his sentences.
I thought the same thing. But I am glad Tom was interrupting. Goleman has a script, he repeats everytime (which you read in his book(s)). Tom was successful in getting him to go beyond his script. Goleman didn't seem to mind and I suspect was flattered how deep Tom has studied his books. Anyway, the interview gets better, and becomes a genuine conversation towards the middle. Legendary interview.
My
Zoom wasn’t helping on this one either - so easy to interrupt because of the technical overlap
Totally agree! stop - take a breath!!
A
I admire your channel, and it would be a good interview if there weren’t so many interruptions. There’s a time and place to talk about what you want to say, but you’ve got this incredible human to interview and it’s jarring when I’m listening to his response and suddenly bam, it’s completely cut off. Let’s incorporate active listening 👂🏻
I love this guy!! I feel Tom is getting better with interrupting his guests but I can only imagine it's hard not to when your so passionate and realize there is alot to learn from them.
AGREED!!!!! The fact that he still has this much passion in this area, after all the quality productive content he has curated and released for us, it's honestly super phenomenal and inspirational!!!!!
I noticed that too!
I am isolated alone and I am doing to many self improvement things that I never could do before. It's amazing. Remolding my home, more meditation, more reading, my animals are getting better care, I'm calmer , I'm happier , I am lonely but I know it's temporary .

Excellent interview thanks. Just some feedback Tom do not interrupt so much, let the guest talk and mentally reserve the Qs for after. He had barely even finished his sentence and he is being constantly cut off. Gracious guest 😁
I liked the measured rate that thus guest delivered his message. Don’t be afraid to let an idea settle before jumping to the next.
@@dakotablueskies almost unpleasant all the interruption
Yes I normally like Tom's interview style but I felt he came across as abrupt here, and didn't respect the interviewee, like me on caffeine 😂 Hard to watch as he was cutting him off at the end of each answer almost demanding more info. Before the last point was complete. Interview held his position with grace and patience.
)ruclips.net/video/x-1rZ_jlPrg/видео.html
Anyone else notice how Tom adapted his listening strategy after Daniel asked him about how he got into his current walk & subsequently listened until Tom was totally finished?
Yes that was so powerful and kind
Daniel I admire you for tolerating this interviewer the way you did

I spent all last year in solitude on purpose and meditated 3 to 4hrs a day. I did not feel lonely at all and felt very calm. At 41:00 I connected to this so much. I came out this year and a different person from having done that. My amygdala was very active due to trauma and now I don't feel anger very often - when I do it converts to compassion within a day.
I’m eternally grateful to you Tom for your show. A special thank you for inviting Dr. Goleman. Very nice to finally put a face to his amazing book and work 🙏🏻
Another fab interview . I discovered something I do when I can't sleep. I go mentally up and down all the streets in my neighborhood wishing each neighbor who I know " may John Doe be happy" and so on. I keep on until I have visited each house. I have been very happy lately even though in lockdown and do not see these people. Now I understand that there is probably a connection between my practice and my positive emotions.
Wonderful technique, if you continue this practice and accompany it with a small act of kindness a day like giving a needy some etc, you will transform yourself from scarce to abundance mentality, which actually will increase your wealth health and social status. But please treat them as side effects when they come and dont do it for sake of those worldly side effects ;-)
This is so wholesome 🥺💕 Thank you for existing.
Wow!! I will do this!
It's an aspect of gratitude
Tom’s passion for and commitment to helping others are undeniable and evident in all the interviews he has done. He seems to know intuitively the questions we are seeking answers for and does his best to ensure that we get those answers. Such an amazing human being and an inspiration.
I have watched this multiple times. I got so many pieces of wisdom from this interview. Thank you Tom for organizing this and hosting the legendary Daniel Goleman who kindly gifts us with his wisdom so we can live better.
The mind is a loyal servant but a very torturous master🙏

I'm studying Psychology myself and I'm also a Buddhist, I think the field of psychology could really benefit from more personal experience in deep meditation. The problem is I think most people in the field either do research on others or read research written by someone else, but the more advanced states of meditation can't be understood from a textbook. Maybe more research into the arera would encourage more psychologists/behavioural scientists to try it themselves.

psychological self observance combined with gentle meditation, pranayama and little yoga will take you home to the SELF. i like the enneagram for psychological self insight. Helps in understanding others too.

One of the best Tom Bilyeu interviews I've heard. Took so much from it!! Defo a one I'll be sharing
Tom - I have watched maybe 2 or 3 interviews and I love this content that you're bringing to your channel. The insightful questions are some of the highest quality, and they clearly provoke some interesting discussions that seem genuine. They appear to keep the interviewee interested in the topics they know best.
Tom why do you keep cutting this man off bro. It’s like he tells you his observation and goes into theory then you cut him off every time he gets to his premise or hypothesis and you cut him off from his of thought
Also have you ever heard the idea that if you let someone completely finish what they’re saying and the answer to your question might answer your question before you ask it..... by the way I think your inspiring and an awesome host.
Honestly Oprah does the same thing, but I realized that when you are the one who is steering the conversation, sometimes interrupting isn’t to be rude, but to keep the guest on the subject and that they don’t veer off. Also, I find myself preparing to receive the answer he asked of his guest and sometimes they misunderstand the questions; so he asks them to answer exactly what his listeners want to hear. I hope this helps! 😋
Exactly what I noticed. Tom needs to calm down and listen more...or maybe needs more meditation?
@@shyiarobinson9758 I don't think he did that at all...I think he interrupts to talk sometimes...almost too excited....
Without having seen the video, keep in mind there is a delay/lag virtually, which is not present in-person.
I have the same impression, bothered me a little 😏
Thanks for having an inspiring amazing guest! Thanks for introducing him. I loved this episode ❤️
This was one of the best podcast I have seen in a while. Love the conversation between both of them. So interesting!!! Thanks.
Dear Tom, I have improved my life because of you! Thank you for bringing your amazing guest!

I read Goleman's book many years ago, was very impressed. But in communication he seems even greater, such a wonderful soul
Another truly thoughtful and helpful podcast. Thank you Tom! You’re a kind soul.
I thoroughly enjoyed the entire conversation and so appreciate Daniel Goleman!
One of the best conversations yet. Thanks, Tom and Daniel. The interest Daniel showed in Tom was fun to watch. I felt like Tom may wobble a bit with a couple of the questions/insights but, nope, everything he stands for stood true. Brilliant.
This interview alone is material enough for great significant change...highly appreciated work....🙏🏾 thank you Dr Daniel Goleman for your wisdom.
Tom you are just Amazing...When ever I become low with confidence or anxious about tomorrow, I just watch your videos.
Emotional intelligence and Focus were two of the best books I have come across which helped me stabilise my thoughts when ever I get carried away with negativity
Be aware of your emotions, label them that is half the solution. Meditation, purpose. why you do what you do are some of the key words. Tom, you need to bring on one more interview with Dr. Daniel.
Let your guest finish the sentence bro ✌🏽
I don’t watch him as much cause he always cut ppl off and thinks he’s smarter than everyone!
Sadly you don't understand the concept of 'Conversations with Tom' :)
@@jesusperalta2335 then why is he posting on youtube and expecting others to watch it. Why dont he use a PHONE rather a Video call if really want to have CONVERSATION with him
For all you professional interviewers out there commenting how Tom should stop Interrupting.... we wouldn’t have gotten nearly as much information in the short time they had from Mr. Goleman had Tom not done his JOB as the interviewer. If you’d like to just hear Mr. Goleman speak go watch a lecture by him. Tom ask some amazing questions. In my opinion this conversation went like best friends enjoying each other’s presence and being excited about what each has to say and I was excited to hear every word.
Omg!! When the discussion about the o overweight kid and the "so called cool kids".I broke out into tears.I am so emotional and so empathic .I have such a "doomsday" feeling on civilization and where this world is going. So when I hear stories or see situations that have a positive outlook,or compassion,or some kind of defending of the person or situation ,...it totally instills a positive and a faith in humanity.I love your program. You have an incredible sense of what matters to people or what WOULD POSSIBLY INSTILL THE GOOD AND POSITIVE in human beings. This particular program was most inspiring and made for a very positive outlook in my life today.Homeless for the first time,an every day maintenance drug and alcohol user, house burning down then husband leaving and wanting to die.Im in temporary housing, have a 25 yr old son who has suffered throughout his own life(is sleeping on his bosses couch) and a mum over 70 who I used to treat so badly but in the last 10-15 years I have changed that and love her more than I could say in words.A musical,American,Jewish, musical genius step father who also has assburgers, who I love dearly. I feel I have so much to say to people.Maybe that's my ego, regardless, thank you for the start of my day today.
One of the best interviews with Daniel Goleman! Thank you for the inspiration!
Please Tom respect your guests and let them talk !!! It’s like you don’t listen what your gust is trying to say rather it’s about you and your questions ... Best interviewer nowadays is Peter Attia, he has mastered it , he listens, he asks appropriate questions in RIGHT TIME , he is calm , relax and full of respect to all his guests !!!

Wow, totally speechless! such profound and insightful interview. I am rather appreciative and grateful to you both Tom & Daniel🙏🌹
Great interview! No dout that emotional inteligence is the way to success. I been watching your show now for almost two years Tom and is always getting better. Thanks.
Great interview. Tom, thanks for training us. I feel the benefits.
One of the best conversations. I truly enjoyed it.
Jottings:
- Theme: Being EQ (Emotional Intelligence) smart
- EQ: being smart about emotions
- Self Awareness (knowing feelings, cognitive control)
- Self Management (put positives forth)
- Empathy
- Social skills, relationships
- EQ more important than IQ for growth-success.
- EQ is learn-able, so teach in school, better before age 20.
- Any Meditation works, makes calmer, focuses attention.
- Meditation shifts from Sympathetic (flight or fight, amygdala) to para-sympathetic (calm, pre-frontal cortex)
- Social brain: links to brains of others. Invisible influence just by presence.
- Emotional control: Have ability to take down anyone, but don't do it.
- Finding inner drive/purpose: by accident, self-awareness, evaluating choices
- Successful entrepreneurs: growth mindset, visualization, get performance feedback, risk after homework, grit, help others (empathy)
Beneficial brother. Thanks.
All in all, extremely informative interplay between two wonderfully intuitive life-long learners. Bless you both for spending your time teaching us!!!

Thank you Tom for the amazing interview, I read for the first time Daniel work when I was studying undergrad psychology I found fascinating.

Let Tom live! He's doing awesome! He can't be 100% all the time. I watch/listen to so many podcasts, and this guy is like top 1% in his interviewing/conversation skills. I think it's more valuable for him to be STILL so completely passionate on these topics, as a long-term educational benefit for us.
Always amazing content... EI is sooooo important! Let’s make 2021 amazing!!
wow cool, so cool to see this. I studied EQ back in 2004. I made a basic psychometric test around this for my uni dissertation. It's become the foundation of my understanding of personal development and human behaviour. To paraphrase, Emotional intelligence is the ability to monitor your own and other peoples feelings and emotions and then being able to use those feelings and emotions to pursue and attain goals.
Feeling grateful I came across this back then as it set a very good foundation for me. So defiantly look into it and learn about it. 🙏🏻
Very much to learn from this episode. I like that Daniel G thought of asking Tom about his story :)
Awesome thoughts from Dr. Goleman. Wishing to hear and learn more from his insights about this matter.
