I will never forget a scene she had with Richard Chamberlain in "The Thorn Birds" where she is trying to seduce him. When he rejects her, she rages about being old. The passion that came out of her was palpable. I think it moved me to tears. She was truly one of a kind.
Never cared for her. Always to intense , to serious. But that doesn't take away the fact she was one of the best in her time. She just didn't appeal to me.
I see why now.... she always portrayed herself as a strong women in shows like... Big Valley (my favorite show) and other movies. So happy for her success, she deserved it!!

Yeah, a guy I work with, his wife died. Now he goes to the wall to do whatever he has to do to be there for his kids. It's really tough on him. He deserves respect for it.
You’d be surprised how many men did this for most of human history. Raising children was seen as a woman’s role. Fathers were completely unequipped to deal with kids, and had no idea what to do. If the mother passed away, the father would either quickly find a woman to remarry and raise his kids, or he’d give them up to the Forster care system. I was recently reading a story about a British man in The 1700s, his wife died, and he sent his ten year old son to America to work as an indentured servant, which is basically signing a contract stating that you’ll work for seven years for a landowner. After the seven years is up, you get your freedom and a piece of land as payment. The problem is that the work is so backbreaking and the conditions are so poor, that you had a 50% chance of dying before the 7 year term was over. Thankfully, they boy survived, and that boy had a family. He is an ancestor of Reba McIntyre. True story. Watch her episode of “who do you think you are”, the story is told there.
So yeah, that man basically gave up his kid to risk his life doing hard labor, all because he didn’t want to raise him, because that just wasn’t expected of men back then. Men who were wealthy enough could just hire live-in help, but most people couldn’t afford that. It’s pretty crazy to think about. In Reba’s ancestor’s case, everything thankfully worked out, but I can’t imagine how scared and sad and lonely that little ten year old boy was. Dead mother, no father, in a new country all by yourself, doing hard labor with little food or medical care, and people dropping dead all around you every day due to the work and the conditions. But if not for all that, Reba would not be here today, and she wouldn’t have had the career she has. It’s crazy to think about. We are all here today because our ancestors survived the unimaginable, against all odds.

I really enjoyed Stanwyck in the Big Valley. I imagine those "backstage" knew of her real-life experiences and knew she was the ideal actress for the little woman in the "Big Valley."
I liked her character because she was a clear headed ,practical and independent woman who kept that ranch running smoothly with diligent oversight while she nurtured and supported her children's well being without spoiling or smothering them.
She always tried to stand up on her own two feet but wasn't too prideful to ask for or offer help when needed.
No matter what troubles came her way she stood up for what was right, and refused to be oppressed or to give up without a fight.

She was a victim of her circumstances and instead of letting those circumstances make her bitter and lead a drone life, she dared to dream and bet on herself because of passion.
