- Barbara Lewis was born in Salem, near Ann Arbor, Michigan, and raised in South Lyons. She was writing and recording by her teens with record producer Ollie McLaughlin, in Ann Arbor. During the 1960s, he worked with Del Shannon, Deon Jackson, the Capitols, and Barbara. Barbara had a regional hit in 1962. But at the beginning of 1963, she recorded her own composition at the Chess Records Studio in Chicago, with vocal backing by The Dells. "Hello Stranger" reached #3 on the chart, and featured the Hammond organ. Bert Berns produced her million-seller "Baby I'm Yours" (U.S. #11) in the Spring of 1965, written by Van McCoy; and he also produced the followup "Make Me Your Baby" (U.S. #11) which peaked in September, 1965 and which was originally recorded by the Pixies Three.
