There was really never anyone else quite like her. I use to just hear that she had disappeared from the music industry after a short career, but this show makes me see there was much more to it than that. I have seen some videos where she sang her hits before adoring audiences in the 21st century, and that makes me very happy. A great singer who wrote many awesome songs, and at least one self-penned is an unforgettable classic that is now familiar to everyone's ears. Hello Stranger, so unique and lovely and enduring.
there are so many advantages of living in a you-tube period, many of the life stories I have been watching on this channel took me back to a time in my life that I was so care free, and when music though lacking in areas was still the best. listening to all the artist I have not heard in years brought tears to my eyes.
Crazy about HELLO, STRANGER as much as the flip side THINK A LITTLE, SUGAR. Played both sides on a tinny record player my father had just bought me that had three speeds--45/33/78--that I had discs for. Loved the lines: "Don't want to talk about the past, 'cause the past has gone/I just want to sit and talk with you, baby, all about the future 'cause it's been soooo long, so just think a little, sugar." Another masterpiece was SOMEDAY WE'RE GONNA LOVE AGAIN successfully covered by The Searchers. I love you Barbara. It feels so good to have you back again. How long has it been? Oooh, seems like a mighty long time...
She one of the all time great singer and how she got screwed with her money is a crying shame. A lot of record moguls did the same with thier singers and we treat them like royalty. Barbara I played your hits all the time and I think you are the greatest.
If Smokey Robinson and Nancy Wilson had a child she would have sounded like the magnificent Barbara Lewis. N.B. she was an early exponent of the singer songwriter genre. She penned every song on her debut album Hello Stranger. Smart girl!
Thanks for this, Barbara Lewis is revered by us Northern Soul fans in the UK. To me she is one of holy trinity of female souls singers along with Dusty Springfield and Martha Reeves KTF
Omg I'm speechless...reminds me of my late father when he played her music. Barbara Lewis is an exceptionally talented artist. I love love 💘 her music. And may she receive back every thing that was stolen from her...thanks, this made my day and rekindled many wonderful memories.
She had one of the most beautiful voices, so clear and expressive. Had she had a few more tunes on a par with her 3 most successful tunes her star would've risen higher. There were a lot of weak and junky songs getting recorded in the '60s; it wasn't all smash hits. Barbara Lewis was no doubt financially ripped off like most artists in that era but she was also the victim of lackluster songs. That's surprising because it should've been so obvious that her voice was perfect for sensual romantic tunes which she sang with transcendent elegance but their attempts to have her do "teen" songs and up-tempo cutesy-poo tunes backfired. "Puppy Love"? I didn't buy it; she had the voice of a woman, not a 15 year old. I have her Best of Barbara Lewis album on Atlantic and it's unfortunately full of tunes that have weak hooks or unappealing melodies. She was not a one hit wonder; she was a 3 hit wonder with a voice that could take your breath away... speaking of taking your breath away, check out how "Hello Stranger" was used in the Oscar winning movie "Moonlight". THAT will take your breath away too; it's an example of perfect use of a classic record used in a film.
I met her was very grateful that my freind remembered her. It was like big deal . gave autograph. I tape that show with little anthony and Imperials. My late mom loved her the way she sang make me your baby. It was touchen. I allso surprise chancellor it wasnt mention she was good freinds with Sharon Tate and was one of two freinds that left Tate thst after noon before her gruling death of Manson murders. That eight hours they be killled. Lot people dont know that. Not even Barbria mentions it.
Her voice was so mesmerizing, the way she caresses the lyrics made her sound like an exotic for Arabia! Now if I was like Perry Mason, she'd be getting her money!!! She wrote some HUGE hits! It's just ridiculous how they ripped those folks off!
CHANCE B: I loved this detailed bio of Barbara' life. However, you didn't mention her 1968 single release "You Made Me A Woman." I remember hearing this song on the car radio on my way to school. The song made an impression on me but then I never heard the song again. The song just disappeared. I loved the song and is one of my favorite of Barbara's single releases. Funny how some good songs just don't catch on.
Thank you. I enjoyed this very much, especially with the added insights regarding the people who surrounded Barbara's career. I have a compilation CD featuring roughly 25 of her recordings, and there's not a dud in the bunch. For anyone who has never heard it please listen to her "Come Home" which is mentioned in this video and available on RUclips < ruclips.net/video/s_Nt99E2llI/видео.html > -- My favorite of all her fine recordings. Thank you God for this wonderful, wonderful artist! BTW "Baby I'm Yours" and "Make Me Your Baby" both charted No.11 on Billboard's Top 40, and "Make Me Belong To You" (yet another great recording) charted at No. 28 on Billboard's Top 40 (1966). Love ya, Barbara!!! 🤗💚🤗💜🤗🌺🌺🌺 9/2019
Hello Stranger is more than a classic. That song and music goes right thru you and into your soul at the same time. Summer 1963.
Mr Chance your stories/history is just SUPER! AWESOME & AMAZING!!!

Back In The Day , I Remember Hello Stranger And Baby I’m Yours; She Was A Phenomenal Artist.
She one of the all time great singer and how she got screwed with her money is a crying shame. A lot of record moguls did the same with thier singers and we treat them like royalty. Barbara I played your hits all the time and I think you are the greatest.
Barbara Lewis is, without question, one of the FINEST singers ever recorded on Atlantic Records…And that’s saying a lot! 👍👍👍👍
If Smokey Robinson and Nancy Wilson had a child she would have sounded like the magnificent Barbara Lewis. N.B. she was an early exponent of the singer songwriter genre. She penned every song on her debut album Hello Stranger. Smart girl!
A well deserved documentary need to be done on this woman. 🎶Spend A Little Time🎶 is the fave 🎧😊
your voice makes me shiver

Hello Stranger was used in the movie Moonlight in 2016 with Mahershala Ali
near the end of the movie.

THIS IS AMAZING! THE SONG, "MAKE ME YOUR BABY", HAD THAT "PHIL SPECTOR WALL OF SOUND" FLAVOR.
Beautiful and talented. The music business is sooo horrible, then and now!

Hi HTHTV3 ! Thank you so much for your nice comment! Glad you're enjoying my channel ! God Bless.
When Mary Wells left Motown they should have signed Barbara Lewis too sing all those Smokey Robinson tunes; they kinda sang and sounded alike.
I'l learning so much thanks to your vids...thanks!

Great research!
It's 2019, and as far as I can tell, she's still alive as of this year?
Kendra Spotswood pic is in fact Little Eva.
Anybody that take the time to thumbs down this channel must be slow
I could not believe she was giving a 500 dollar check and was told that was the best they could do
That was horrible.
I wonder what was going thru Smokey's mind when this "Hello Stranger," came out?
Mary Wells and Barbara Lewis wow !!
Queen L version so awesome
She look like irene cara in THAT picture
I lived down the road from Barbra in South Lion and didn't even know it in the 80's I would have kissed her feet...that sweet angle hehehe :)
Great episode! Is Barbara Lewis still alive?

I want to hear about Barbara not everybody else m
13 Takes? 😕😕😬 Holy Smegma
Barbara Lewis never heard of her
Carolyn Howell So many unsung artists.
We who have heard of her are very lucky I guess Carolyn
Carolyn I've never heard of her either..but it's a blessing to know about her now..
I remember she was a big star in the 60's. She made many TV appearances on teen dance shows and her records were played on radio quite regularly.
If you hear their songs or read anyone's work. You've heard of them
