  • From the VHS cover:
"Celebrated international flautist, Sir Manuel Camargue, is found drowned in an icy lake in the grounds of his home. Everyone believes his death is a tragic accident, but Wexford becomes suspicious when Camargue's fiancee Dinah claims that his long-lost daughter, Natalie, who returned to see her father shortly before his death, was an impostor.
In trying to prove the deception, Wexford's trail leads him to America where Natalie had spent the years away from her father. ...."

This series is so incredibly amazingly shot, throughout, ON LOCATION, wherever it is taking place. All the interiors-- INCREDIBLE!!! no staging, just a slice of life as it is then. I can watch them a million more times just to watch the scenes and scenery.

His sidekick is a little annoying. I don't or can't conflate the portrayal here with the character in the books.

Good directors. Script writers - oh dear, more holes in the script than a tea strainer - then again those were simpler times when we could suspend disbelief without consequences.

Brilliant even though I sometimes have a difficult time keeping up with all the plot and character
changes. Discovered Inspector Wexford last year (2021) and have watched of the episodes since that time. Really like how we never see the gore or violence portrayed like other detective suspense stories.

Love the "feel" of this show -- the two police gently sharing a joke, disagreeing just as gently; Wexford's excitement about being in L.A., taking pictures of the Hollywood sign; the eccentric tics of the characters and the naturalness of pets. What a great discovery - thank's so much Paul Goddard!

Now I'm reading the book with each episode concurrently and since the series follows the books so well it makes for a more complete experience. Rendell is a remarkable writer and the regular cast of the Wexford tv series certainly do her justice. Thank you again Paul.

It’s really not that hard to go from left to right and if they don’t show him using maps, and asking for directions does not mean he did not use them( they don’t show characters going to bathroom and it doesn’t mean they don’t pee) by the way, my friend from Czech Republic traveled to California and managed driving and finding places better than me and he speaks no English! So, intelligent inspector like Wexford would do just fine for sure😉

This episode from 1990: Fantastic cast! Good to see Rossano Brazzi in a rare cameo. Many great British character actors. George Baker’s second wife ( married in 1974), the actress Sally Home, plays the part of the busybody neighbour Mrs Murray-Burgess. She died, after battling with illness, in 1992. In 1993 he married “ Mrs Wexford” Louie Ramsey.

Believe it or not, I was in the same form at secondary school with Janet Maw who plays Diana (Sir Manuel's fiancée). I haven't seen her since that time, 50 years ago although I did know she had become an actress. She really hasn't changed one little bit to look at, although I suppose she probably has now, as this episode dates from the 1980s or 90s.

I just found Inspector Wexford. It is a lot of fun. There are fewer murders than Midsomer; which can have up to seven people murdered in a single episode. The first one I watched had a single murder that was free of gore and an autopsy. Wexford was easier to listen to and a lot smarter. I’m looking forward to watching many more of these mysteries.

I stumbled on the book in a coffeeshop, read it, re-read it, became absolutely obsessed, found this film.... ugh why why why do they always get the women wrong. Both Natalie Arno and Sylvia Wexford are described in some detail in the bool- Nathalie with her big "bell" of glossy black hair, and her deep BLACK eyes, Sylvia with her straight fall of bleach-blond hair, described as "pale ivory". Is that so hard to understand and get straight? Also the women's looks are an integral part of their characters and life stories! Argh! George Baker is pitch-perfect as the inspector, and I love the visualization of Pearl of Africa.

I just watched this episode for the third or I think fourth time. I really like it. It took Wexford to different locations. Sunny Southern California too! I thought I knew the ending, but watching it again, I see that I was wrong. I really like this episode! Thank you Paul. Hope you don't mind your subscribers using your Christian name, Paul.

Don't think he'd ever have been given the funding to start such an investigation.

I have driven on every street in this show. Filming was very common in Hollywood back then. Before they started filming in other, less expensive, crazy, unreal places. I live in Oregon now, and looking back to my California childhood, it’s like a dream. 😎

Since when is 70 years old considered an old man? They made the man sound decrepit.

Age seems relative. Some people are really old at 50 while others are still young at 80.

if you were born before both WW's then yes, they are decrepit. Us Boomers are the first Younger seniors who are enlivened, not decrepit due to improved health care, improved awareness & use of natural ly healthy foods, supplements, ways of thinking & it all gace us way more control over our lives. They were all required to fit the mold. We broke that in 1960';s & psychedelic's & Cannabis aided us with it's mind bending, stunning spirituality it can bring seekers. No more boxes.

Liberalism (´hippieism´) and political correctness does tend to age one though, it´s such a burden.
And liberalism and political correctness do display narrow mindedness not ´stunning spirituality´
      (whatever that means) however.

ekcentrik. Since when? Well up until around 40 years ago it was considered old. As for the 50’s and before, just take the classic movie “Sunset Boulevard” as an example. The main character was considered old and past it at 50 years of age!!! We have a very different concept of old age now though some people can still look way beyond their actual age.
