Creatine supplementation helps your nervous system and mental health because it takes stress off of your methylation system. Your body needs creatine and makes it on its own. It requires a methyl group to make, and is highly prioritized, which leaves your body with fewer resources to methylate other important compounds, for example basically all B vitamins and choline. For people who are already poor methylators, such as those like myself with the MTFHR gene, supplementing creatine is a huge physical and mental game changer.
As a fellow MTHRFKR mutant, i will concur. Shit's legit. Might i also steer you toward TMG supplementation? Theres an additional MTF molecule as a byproduct of TMG breakdown. Helped a ton! I never really did much research on it so I don’t know the actual science behind it. But I always used as like a placebo, ofc I know it’s water weight post workout but it gives a glimpse of the potential which motivates me to keep working
I loved creatine, really saw the benefits. But it reeeally increased my blood pressure, as it frequently does in people prone to hypertension. Had to stop taking it.
I am 77. Been working out for 2 years (weights/resistance). Started creatine about 2 months ago and started putting on muscle mass for the first time since I was much younger. No doubt in my mind that it works. Before the creatine I was increasing in strength but I was not getting hypertrophy. I am now!
Been on it for roughly 9 months. Saw improvement probably 6 months in. Felt bloated but got over it. Definitely got more efficient with my lifting👍🏻. Ppl say I look "juicier"👍🏻👍🏻

If you have Blood pressure issues … It can also exacerbate it . The water retention aspect of it can make BP worse . But it does work . Beyond a shadow of a doubt
it retains water in the cells in the muscle. Blood pressure is raised when fluid is increased in the blood via salt, however the kidneys keep the salt levels where it needs to be. Cut sugar out of your diet and watch you blood pressure drop. Insuline in the blood causes pretty much all issues from diabetes to strokes to heart attacks.
I came here to see wht you think of creatine because I've been using it for the last month I'm 39 and I feel so good. Energized. My growth isn't insane but I'm not loosing the muscle I do gain on my days off like I used too. It's really great stuff thank you man
Used creatine for 2 years nonstop. But have been peein like crazy. Would wake up like 3 times while sleeping to pee. Also did my creatine levels checked and man they were 1.27 which is more than the upper limit. And i have been taking 2.5 grams of creatine for 3 months while before that i was taking 5, gram. Now for first time im taking a break from creatine for alteast 6-8 weeks as my creatine level is high and been peeing like crazy.
To be completely honest, I haven't noticed a difference since I started taking creatine about a year ago. Could be because I already eat a lot of meat and fish, but the only reason I'm still taking it is that it's cheap so why not - just in case it does make a small difference.
Dear Dr. Mike.... I'm a new lifter, just hit week 5! I am currently taking no supplements whatsoever, but have been reading a lot on HMB. Could you please do a quick breakdown on HMB?? I'd be forever thankful.
Just take some leucine on top of your protein supplement, literally same results. Leucine is broken down into HMB so it's way cheaper than buying HMB. You'll get more results with creatine though. And right now at week 5 I wouldn't even bother with anything other than dialing in your diet, creatine will give bigger gains than HMB for sure...
@connorhall8463 the clinical studies on it are really very interesting though! 3000mg of HMB and especially paired with Vit D3 have show time and again to help muscle growth when paired with weight training and help burn fat, and even protects against muscle loss. It was given to cancer and HIV patients and the results were pretty crazy.
I agree 100 with ya, that's why I tried it. I think it is one of the very few supps that actually work. I've also tried adding leucine to my protein shake, and consistently take creatine. I'm just saying that right now at 5 weeks in, I don't think it's worth the cost for you. If you're training decently and eating enough calories and getting 1g/lb of protein, you'll make gains, the best gains you'll ever get. When you hit a hard spot, then absolutely start taking supplements. I'd milk the newb gains for all I could first. No supplements are magic, it's the hard work and diet and consistency that get you big/cut, supps make up 5 maybe 10% in the end. I think it works about as well a taking large amounts of glutamine. At least, that was what it did for me, you could very well be different, if you've got money to burn on something and want to try it, then hell yea, throw it in it won't hurt I just don't think you'll get noticeable results since your in the very beginning stage and that's when the most gains are made...
I first tried creatine some years ago and it made me very sick, gave it up pretty quickly. A few months ago, decided to have another look. I now think the product I used the first time was loaded with artificial coloring and sweetener (why?). Tried again this time with a non-adulterated product. No effect after a couple months at the recommended 5 grams a day, but it didn’t make me sick. Upped the dose to 10g and definitely seeing some benefit, though not as much as some people.
Awesome. I started using it again recently & am very happy to hear this research confirmation. I feel better on it & have added it to my daily hydration. 🎉
Not even close enough what you get through powder so you can'take take creating and say I am still natural for example by that logic people on TRT are naturals.
"enough" is a loaded word. You get "enough" creatine by doing nothing - Your body will produce enough on its own to run the basics on. Any that you intake, up to the limit where your cells are full of the stuff and can't use any more, adds more performance. So eating lots of meat does provide some creatine and provide some benefit... But, like the other reply said, you'd need to be eating very unhealthy amounts of meat to get enough to match the level of creatine given in supplements for the studies that show the results we talk about. (I'm not sure if the studies accounted for the meat intake of the participants, either, so it is possible that the amount of meat you'd need to reach that amount would be on top of normal meat intake, which is already high for average Americans)
Your body naturally can make more than 7 times what it needs without consuming any. The only people that are actually benefiting from it are people on anabolic and hormone replacement cycles.
The amount of food you'd have to eat to get the same level as supplements is unnecessary and supid. It's easier to scoop 5 grams in a glass of water and just drinking that.

My bill paying job at night is extremely physical, I'm over 35 with a bunch of injury issues left over from over working myself in my 20s. At the end of the day I'm physically wiped & left in so much god damn pain I can barely move for two days on my weekends. I do everything I can to recover afterwork and on my days off but during the day I also have science work I need to do when I'm not physically working, so I need to be mentally sharp enough to pour over research papers but I'm struggling to stay focused off of the pain & exhaustion. My interest in creatine is the aid in recovery, more muscles can be useful but I'm already capable of hand chucking blue CHEP pallets (60 lbs per pallet) by hand over head in 20 stacks. It's that better recovery I'm desperately needing. Stretches, a high antioxidant diet & Epson salt bubble baths just really aren't cutting it enough. Help : I’m 60 yrs old and want to take creatine. Is it safe for my age ?…and how much should I take at a time ? I’ve played football and wrestled over half my life. Never took any creatine or supplements. I weight 185 and would like to gain 20-25lbs. I still workout and lift. I have stage4 cancer but it’s been in remission for almost 3 yrs now. Any advice will help a lot.
I’ve recently added creatine back into my diet and I’ve noticed increased muscular endurance. Weights and sets that used to wear me out are not as hard anymore. I can lift a little heavier, add another set, or workout a little longer. Creatine, protein powder, and a multivitamin are all I take. Otherwise, I just try to eat a protein-rich diet with plenty of meat and dairy. Creatine is pretty awesome.
I was using to take daily 5gr of creatine and 8gr of BCAA. I've noticed that I had erectile dysfunction. When I cut them both I came back to my normal.

Can someone tell me the side effects of it? I’m 29. Down 75 pounds and put on some muscle with just Protein Powder and BCAAS. People keep telling me to take it but I’m not sure… I’m 5’9 225 if that helps.
There really isn’t side effects other than one or two studies saying it can aggravate hair loss, or you know if your stomach is sensitive maybe it can upset it, as long you’re drinking plenty of water you should be fine there’s studies done with cases where people took creatine for 5 years every day continuously and experiencing no side effects
I've been getting the house brand from Wal-Mart. Comes in a black container and it's 90-day supply for about $16 after tax. So at one scoop (5g) a day that's a 3-month supply! Can't beat it!
Yeah let me tell you one thing then u decide. Creatine stores more Water in the muscle. There if u drink heavy yeah u have some big muscles quickly but. But u lose it quicker then u think. And first you should look if your body can take it. 1 month on one month of but its Just for hollywood shit. Go oldschool and have pacience
@Serralas it increases DHT levels, which is what causes hairloss for people genetically prone to it. It wont make u go bald overnight, but if you're destined to go bald as you age, creatine can speed up the process
3/4.5k calorie diet with 150g of protein a day and light LIGHT full body workouts. Added ONE 16oz water with creatine a day (plus normal water intake). I went from being stuck at 135 lbs looking like a pale white limp fish stick not being able to ever gain weight to 155 in a SINGLE MONTH. my biceps gained over an inch in size and I physically looked and felt the absolute best I ever have in my life. I dont do ANYTHING else. I have and always will recommend Creatine and protein powder as the only two things you truly need to buy other than chicken and rice if youre serious about getting into shape. It's a tried and true natural method and it will change your life!
Thanks for coming out about this. The only reason I’m scared to take it is cos of this, and I’ve already gotten periods of time where my hair fall is bad, so I’m fairly certain creatine will make it worse. Guess I’ll have to keep off it :/
Creatine helps filling your muscles with water and makes them look fuller and slightly bigger, this effect is gonna disappear after a few weeks off creatine But all the other effects aren't really things that you can "take back", creatine increases you training effectiveness and disposition, so if you took creatine for 6 months you had better gym sessions and hypertrophy for 6 months, regardless if you stop taking now
If the gains are from the f=ma equation, yeah they will go away. When I get on it I gain 10 lbs of water mass. I look great. But I do figure skating. I couldn't even sit spin anymore with all the extra mass. Also didn't feel healthy to be at 195 at 5'10. My heart felt really inefficient and I couldn't run a mile in less than 11 min. I also got a groin pull prob from having extra mass in my legs my adductor tendons weren't ready for. So now I'm out of commission doing rehab shit for a month and losing everything I had. Some sports don't get better on it regardless of what the studies say.
I honestly haven't noticed much yet. I didn't do the 10 grams because I was too worried about digestive issues, so I've been doing 5 grams per day, in the morning after breakfast for almost a month. IDK. It hasn't really been doing anything to my digestive system like I was worried it would.
Get a clean source of creatine and go up in dose Gradually while staying hydrated. Some literature now shows that some Individuals need more creatine intake than others (even up to 20 g.)
Kidney stones and liver issues and it’s only good for temporary cosmetic gains the moment you stop you loose all that extra water in your muscle and “deflate” stay safe and take protein and vitamins
There are virtually 0 studies showing any indication of any liver damage/kidney stones. You will get kidney stones regardless of what you eat if you don't drink water/ go crazy on salts.
So sad im a non responder, i tried it many times, also checked my blood profile 3 times my creatin was always high. Maybe because i eat a lot of meat since im young 😅
I’m 53 years old 230 pounds I work out about five days a week eat as healthy as possible. I’ve been taking creatine for about eight months and I haven’t really noticed a difference. I’m taking the 5 g a day as recommended. Should I up the dose in your opinion?
Nope, because the hormone level increase still puts it way under the "too high" mark and is similar to the increase you get just from increasing your exercise levels. (Because exercising also increases DHT) Bro is just spewing nonsense or was already going bald and wants to blame something other than genetics. *source: literally any research at all* @N00BTUBER987
Creatine doesn’t cause hair loss dude. You’re probably just noticing it and making patterns because you’ve heard that bullshit on the internet. There is zero evidence that it causes hair loss and the only reason people think it does is because 1 study nearly 20 years ago showed a correlation with creatine supplementation and higher DHT levels.
you're seeing things or your hair would fall off regardless. Exercise increases DHT levels more than creatine, and yet no one says working out makes your hair fall off
Loved the strength gains, but as soon as I start creatine, my sleep goes to shit. Right away. I’m talking 4-5h of sleep, lying in bed fully awake at 3am. Very weird. Coincidence? Happened 4-5 times when I stopped/started.
ill do creatine cycles 4 times a year ( i dont work out i do trade work) now i dont stay on it for long because im so busy and forget about it, ill go for a month then i stop for whatever reason but i find it gets me through those tough jobs.. not sure if its proven to work on the same day you take it but it sure feels like it does... apparently it helps retain water ..so on really hot days id advise not to take it, i dont sweat as much and start to feel sick.. but otherwise its a blessing
At least for me, I was having a lot of trouble waking up in the morning, I felt sick, dizzy and very sleepy (not sleepy like, oh extra 5 minutes, sleepy like I could barely even walk) The day after I took it, I woke up better, it could definitely be placebo, but I'm definitely feeling way better than I used to
Creatine aids the body in producing ATP from ADP. The body naturally synthesizes about a gram of creatine a day, although we can also get it from red meats...and of course supplementation
As a beginner in the gym? Should I get a creatine supplement? I'm already seeing good results but I'm wondering if I need to start taking this supplement at the beginning of my journeys or wait till I get more advanced in the gym?
I know people hyped up nitric oxide back in the day but today you don't see it often. When i used it, it really helped recovery and soreness. Might have been placebo but damn it was great. That was using it with creatine of course.
There are still NO boosters in many pre workout supplements. Creates more of a "pump" and vascularity. Makes your blood vessels dialate and become larger
The problem is you have to keep taking it to stay swoll. Once you stop taking it you will get smaller. I do not want to be dependent on anything to stay jacked. I am big enough, I do not need creatine. I take pride in being natural. I just lift, eat clean, and sleep to stay jacked.
Agreed. However I’d say it has a place when you hit a plateau. Creatine is in steak so it’s not like you’re taking something fake. It’s just more. Tbh an hour lifting session isn’t really what nature designed but we still do it.
I don't think you understand how magnesium works. Regardless, you shouldn't blame other people for what you perceive as being a mistake. It's your fault, the research is out, go and read it.
Don't know anything about whatever Huberman is pushing, but I don't think it should do anything, if you are not deficient in magnesium to begin with. I was very much deficient in magnesium and when I started taking it, it literally changed my life. My constant brainfog and fatigue that I've been suffering from for years completely disappeared.
Look, I'm on the fence of taking creatine, but the one and only thing holding me back is: Does creatine really cause hair loss? As great as being jacked is, I want to keep my hair
With the current research, you can assume the following two things: 1) there's nothing implying creatine actually causes hair loss 2) you won't get jacked for taking creatine, you might not even see a difference at all Should you take it? Sure, but don't have your expectations high. People tend to expect way too much from supplements
It doesn't cause hair loss. There are other factors at play that are causing hair loss and creatine is not one of them. People spreading this misinformation don't know what they are talking about. The myth was already debunked ages ago.
Just curious, when do you guys take your creatine? It's been 20 years since I took the stuff and I always took it with my protein shake immediately after a workout. my brother always told me I was wasting it and should have been taking it before the workout. Is there a consensus on this now?
God I wish I could take creatine. I've tried it (small dose, first thing in the morning) like four times. My workouts are amazing, but I can't sleep at night, so not worth it for me. I'm in that tiny minority that just doesn't tolerate it.
Maybe have a friend offer you two shakes - one with creatine in it and one without creatine. Chose one and test yourself if maybe your mind is just making up things?
Are you sure that’s not placebo? I can’t really think of any logical reason it would cause that. The only thing I can think of is you may be worried about side effects and that anxiety keeps you up if anything
@@joshdeveaux8525 I'm doubtful. I was never consciously worried about side effects since I know how well researched it is, and the first two attempts at getting on creatine, I had never heard anyone complain about sleep troubles. I considered the placebo angle, but doesn't seem to help. If the end result is no sleep, doesn't really matter if it's in my head or not, you know?
Hopefully I can get a response on this. So people usually load creatine. And with loading it actually has a high chance of kidney inflammation and possibly kidney damage. Like a direct effect . Even more so then gear. Gear use with anti estrogen and proper blood pressure monitoring has less of an affect on your kidneys then high volumes of creatine. Any thoughts??
Correlation doesn’t equal causation my man. There’s no credible and reproducible evidence showing ti causes hair loss or even has a significant effect on DHT.
@@TheWizardSpeaksI definitely experienced a very high correlation. Before starting creatine I was experiencing no hair loss, then while taking it for a few months the hair loss was quite rapid, and then stopped when I quit creatine. A lot of people report exactly the same phenomenon. A bunch of anecdotal evidence doesn't provide absolute proof, but while studies apparently prove it cannot promote hair loss in any individual, I am going to gamble on my own personal experience and the experience of others, since scientific studies can also paint an inaccurate picture of reality.

Creatine keeping you big as hell for more than 4 hours.
I found a study that showed it might be helpful for myalgic encephalomyelitis, so as it has a well studied safety profile, I gave it a go. The effect is mild but noticeable, especially for energy and brain fog, and helps with my lifting too. I'm impressed
Creatine is legit so cool, especially when you’re starting off. it gives you that water weight pump that motivates you to keep going. I never really did much research on it so I don’t know the actual science behind it. But I always used as like a placebo, ofc I know it’s water weight post workout but it gives a glimpse of the potential which motivates me to keep working
So i started taking it at 37. Ive felt great. Not only muscle mass wise but my brain. I hust read another study it is helping prevent dementia!

If you have Blood pressure issues …
It can also exacerbate it . The water retention aspect of it can make BP worse . But it does work . Beyond a shadow of a doubt
Why would retaining more water raise BP? I feel like my BP is good when I’m hydrated
@@Justin-st6og google bro , 😎
it retains water in the cells in the muscle.
Who proved this?
Yep, peeing is a downside to taking it.
Probably not worth taking, just stick to creatine and eating good quality protein my man 👍
@connorhall8463 the clinical studies on it are really very interesting though! 3000mg of HMB and especially paired with Vit D3 have show time and again to help muscle growth when paired with weight training and help burn fat, and even protects against muscle loss. It was given to cancer and HIV patients and the results were pretty crazy.

I know it's just Wikipedia, but it is a very compelling read.
Upped the dose to 10g and definitely seeing some benefit, though not as much as some people.
love how chill this dude is
Awesome. I started using it again recently & am very happy to hear this research confirmation. I feel better on it & have added it to my daily hydration. 🎉
Don’t you get enough through a balanced diet with animal protein sources? Even if you lift weights a few times a week?
Not even close enough what you get through powder so you can'take take creating and say I am still natural for example by that logic people on TRT are naturals.
No. To get 3-5 grams of creatine from red meat daily you would need to be eating 5-10lbs of pure muscle tissue.

Look, I'm on the fence of taking creatine, but the one and only thing holding me back is: Does creatine really cause hair loss? As great as being jacked is, I want to keep my hair
Fortunately its a myth
With the current research, you can assume the following two things:
1) there's nothing implying creatine actually causes hair loss
2) you won't get jacked for taking creatine, you might not even see a difference at all
Should you take it? Sure, but don't have your expectations high. People tend to expect way too much from supplements
I have seen zero affect on my hair from creatine.🙏🏻😊
It doesn’t
It doesn't cause hair loss. There are other factors at play that are causing hair loss and creatine is not one of them. People spreading this misinformation don't know what they are talking about. The myth was already debunked ages ago.
Just curious, when do you guys take your creatine? It's been 20 years since I took the stuff and I always took it with my protein shake immediately after a workout. my brother always told me I was wasting it and should have been taking it before the workout. Is there a consensus on this now?

@@joshdeveaux8525 I'm doubtful. I was never consciously worried about side effects since I know how well researched it is, and the first two attempts at getting on creatine, I had never heard anyone complain about sleep troubles. Hopefully I can get a response on this.
So people usually load creatine.
And with loading it actually has a high chance of kidney inflammation and possibly kidney damage.

Even more so then gear.
Gear use with anti estrogen and proper blood pressure monitoring has less of an affect on your kidneys then high volumes of creatine.
