    Details:
-The goal is to knit socks while consuming books, via eyes or ears. (phsyical books and audiobooks)

    -All yarn weights are welcome
-The KAL will run in my Ravelry group (yes, it’s been revised and renewed and is up and running) & on Instagram

I will pick 2 winners, one from Ravelry and one from Instagram at the end of the KAL as a thank you for participating. I don’t want the focus to be on prizes but on our love books and sock knitting.

I loved The Women. It was, unfortunately, my generation’s war. I loved the bond those women had. Same goes for The Little Wartime Library. I cried so much through both books.

I love Ravelry for purchasing patterns, keeping them in a library and documenting project information. I don’t actually use the group feature for chatting purposes. I love the group feature for seeing how others KAL projects are developing, looking at color/yarn combinations others have used and figuring out a problem I may have with a current KAL pattern. Glad to see you back on RUclips!

Hi Denise! I'm 100% with you on Ravelry groups. I find them cumbersome. You do you, boo! You don't owe anyone a single thing there and I feel bad that anyone would ever make you feel that way. You're such a positive light and I don't like to think about anyone dimming that light.

Loved the episode. I loved The Women. I was in high school and college in the Vietnam War era, and my sister was an Army nurse in Vietnam. I am so glad someone finally told the story that was hers. I felt pride for the job my sister did. And I cried at the way she was treated by the public when she returned. I am glad the story was told.

Wow!! Thank you so much for sharing your sister's story. This is exactly why I stuck with the book, to bear witness to their experience. And to educate myself.

I also listened to The Women for the KAL and I can absolutely appreciate what your commentary on it is. I was one who loved the book… It was hard to read/listen to (the narrator was amazing) and I couldn’t believe how the heartache just kept coming and coming. I especially loved the look into how the women were treated when they returned to the US and how they got through it with their friendship. I was able to relate in a small way to the incoming traumas in the field hospital….maybe that’s why I felt a small connection with this book. Because while I have never been to war, working in a level 1 trauma centre, sometimes it feels like you just get one trauma dealt with and another and another and another comes it. I finished the book with tears at the ending. And I’m not usually a crier. I did really enjoy it but it was very heavy…. Off to read a rom-com now 😂

Love the RUclips channel, and funny how all brains work differently--I find Insta confusing to track and Ravelry easy. Good thing there are so many fun ways for knitters to connect (and readers, and, ahem, yarn hoarders... coughmecough) so we can all find our way to talk about knitting.

I get it. I was listening to The Four Winds by KH and it was so depressing. I got halfway through and questioned why I was putting myself through it. I stopped reading. I want my reading time, which is not a lot, to be spent on something enjoyable.

It's so lovely to see you again Denise. I am listening to Outlander, I didn't watch the shows. While I listen I am knitting on a pair of Prom Queen Socks design by Kay F Jones from the Bakery Bears podcast. The colour is Ankh Morpork, one of Giddy Knits 12 yarns around the disc club this year. I love all of them, the book, the yarn and the pattern. Perfect combination! Some books we read as they fill us with joy and a thrill in the telling, some expand our knowledge and mindset and others challenge us in multiple ways. My favourite series is the Discworld Books by Sir Terry Pratchett. They have been with me from early adulthood, getting married, having children and becoming disabled. I suspect they will be with me til the end of my life then hopefully pass in to another reader. I love physical books for this, I wish we could do the same with audio and digital books. Love the socks you made. I have been getting a similar pain in my thumb as the one you described. My dominant hand is my only fully working hard, my left hand I can grab but no fine motor skills in it. At least that better than my fully numb left side from when I had my stroke. Be thankful for what we have. Enjoy your weekend! 😃

I found I had a skein for every book cover I picked up😂 I may not want to make socks out of all of them, but there's no lack of choices. I have the same thoughts about ravelry, it’s so hard to follow the flow of it. But my instagram is private due to it mainly being pics of my daughter, and I won’t make it public so my understanding is that I cannot hashtag for anyone to see when it’s private.
I am enjoying the kal by reading and knitting socks and following the posts on instagram even if I do not post! ❤ 📚🧦
I like you, enjoy ww2 fiction, especially with female characters and apparently I gravitate to books set in London. I also love mysteries, they just keep me hooked! I am still not ready for the women, I can tell it will sit too heavy on my overly sensitive and empathetic heart for now. ❤

I was so excited to get a notification for your video tonight. I will be posting socks and books this week. Thank you for sharing about your book and your feelings. I had picked the book Wicked and some really fun socks to go with it. So many people have raved about the musical and I wanted to read it based on the movie coming out later this year. I did not enjoy or finish this book. This is the first book I have given myself permission to stop reading. I am so glad my other books have been better. I know my reaction will also not sit well with those who love it. This has been such a great idea. I am a reader/sock knitter and am enjoying it so much.

Great to see you back to talk books and socks! Thank you for your honest personal review of The Women. I can’t read the book because anything set in the Vietnam Nam era hits too close to home. My dad was killed in action and by friendly fire… a gruesome helicopter crash. So while I love Kristin Hannah books I knew I couldn’t read this one and that’s ok. There are enough gut wrenching books that emotionally drain me (which isn’t always a bad thing). On a happier note I love any book that has bookshop or bookseller in the title and can’t wait to read your suggestion. 🥰

I love Ravelry! But I think the reason is because of joining in an lace advent scarf and there was a group forum for this worldwide KAL. Lace was new to me, a new lace pattern was released daily and any errata was quickly discussed in the forums. I had just become an empty nester at the time as well. Anyway if you keep up you can learn a lot.

I finally sat down to watch the podcast, pfuu, you know how it is, life is busy. About Ravelry I like to 'meet' people and chat about their ideas, I think I'm managing it pretty well at keeping conversation with a few people. At the beginning it was very frustrating, because I'm investing time and energy to write post, to translate my thoughts and to give something of value, but I was receiving only a few likes in silence, I couldn't understand why people are so cold, but now looking at your video it makes more sense. I don't get comments on Instagram either, but this is my fault because I have tetraphobia and don't use the whole hashtag. Overall I was hoping on knit along, not knit alone, but it is what it is. The part with knitting and reading is fun itself. 💖

    • @EarthtonesgirlPodcast
      @EarthtonesgirlPodcast  5 месяцев назад

      Hi Alek,
I'm glad my explanation was helpful to you and made you feel less alone. Unfortunately a virtual knit along doesn't lend itself to a lot of personal interaction. Its more like people admiring another's work and in this case the book they are reading. I'm sorry if you don't feel like your efforts in writing posts were not met with warmth. I don't think that was the intention at all! And regarding tetraphobia, which I had to look up, I'm sorry that is also keeping you away from much interaction on Instagram as well.
I do hope you find some joy in the rest of the KAL.

One of my goals today was to revisit Ravelry. I never posted anything before ... I was confused about the thread but I thought it was just my newbie status.
Many thanks for sharing your reads. I don't think I could tackle those books. Currently reading Surrender by Bono as U2 is my favorite band. I usually listen to music or podcasts while knitting.
Sadly, my socks are still at the cuff stage. For me, tennis elbow really acts us with sock knitting - not present for crochet or heavier weight or loosely knit fingering projects. At least my dk weight sweater is almost done.
Love all of your socks, and I can't wait to make a pair (or 3) of socks with your dk pattern.

First time watching, a new friend in a new for me knitting class told me to watch you. I loved your you tube. I am just learning to knit socks but have always wanted too and I am a reader. I do like historical romance and I do like cozy mysteries. Pretty light subject matter for me. I am not a ravelry person. Have tried it a few times and just couldn’t click with it. 🤷‍♀️. Happy for those who can.

Denise, I read The Women in two days. I agree the subject was very difficult and I didn't "love" the book. I don't know that I should. This was a gut-wrenching story. It was really a difficult time in the country. War is hell for all involved. There was no "winning" of this one. Being spit on in airports was real. Seeing bodies blown apart was real! That is war. It is awful and I think she wrote it well. I always enjoy your videos. Currently I am reading Jubilee Trail by Gwen Brisco. I like older books and authors. This one is a re-read.

Thank you, Denise, for sharing the free pattern with the raised back cuff. I am just 'assuming' you place the shadow wrap short rows exactly where the German short rows go. But then, there are short rows at the back cuff AND the heel. How do you accomplish that? I have seen your videos explaining other designer's work. Maybe you could make it easier for all of us, how you sub in the Shadow Wrap in those two places? I am now up to 4 pr of your shorty socks subbing in the shadow wrap short rows. You know what's not fun? Dropping a stitch in the triple stitches! I had to frog the whole heel and start over! Thank you for teaching us to be better knitters!

I'm thinking that some books aren't compatible with knitting, if your objective is to knit to relax. I also think that books and TV, Movie, etc. that go into detail about women being victimized, duct-taped, tortured are sometimes for titillation of the reader/audience, but not something I need to witness. Along historical fiction lines, I really enjoyed Switchboard Soldiers, about the women who were recruited (because they were bilingual in French and English and were experienced in the old phone technology of the time) to go to France during the first World War to go to operate remote switchboards and facilitate battlefield communications between French and American forces. Happy knitting and reading!

    Denise,
I have basal thumb joint arthritis in both thumbs. I first wore a splint at night and took ibruprofen for the discomfort. My doctor said I didn’t need to stop knitting and that movement was actually good for it but I finally decided to have surgery on my right thumb. The recovery was difficult followed by PT and now 10 years after surgery I still have some discomfort. My left thumb joint is still enlarged and hurts from time to time but not enough to go through another surgery. Immobilizing it gives the most pain relief but who can function with their thumb in a splint 24/7? I have another knitting friend who’s had surgery on both her thumbs with good results so if this is what’s wrong with your thumb you might want to get it checked out. I’m still knitting but hold my yarn differently and don’t have the grip strength I had before developing the condition. I hope yours is just some overuse pain and not what I have. I’m anxious to see your new DK weight sock pattern!

YAY!!! You Are BACK!!! :) I really enjoyed this podcast, and thank you for talking about The Women I have thinking about that book but I was afraid that it would be really intense and it sounds like it was, and typically a well written book hits that much harder (I have read other books by her and really enjoyed them). So I can hold off on that book until I am emotionally fortified. As a side note a really good book to listen to after an intense read (listen) is Legends & Lattes, it is so well written and it is just enjoyable it is like a hug and cup of hot cocoa. It is a fantasy book about an Orc that is retiring from being a sword for hire and she decides to open a coffee shop and it is about community and personal growth and COFFEE :) I also LOVED Remarkably Bright Creatures, Lessons in Chemistry, and Book lovers. As always I am looking forward to your pod cast, knitting and books = YES Please more!!!

My reading is going faster than my knitting bit I’m enjoying both , I loved the women , but agree it was tough but I guess good writing makes you invest in the characters and the story has stayed with me.
I don’t really read much historical fiction but Kristen Hannah does it so well .
Latest book recommendation a debut novel , the midwife Tricia creswell , not at all what I expected, I read it because I’m a midwife and it’s set in north east England an area I love , it was so different and I read it really quickly.
Also agree I couldn’t keep up with Ravelry .

I don't feel like Ravelry discussion threads are set up for ongoing conversation - I totally agree with you that it's really hard to follow (would be better if the subthreads/replies stayed with the original comment so that if you clicked on that comment, the rest of the conversation would open up but stay with that comment if that makes any sense...).
Great sock/yarn and book cover matches! I enjoyed listening to you talk about reading. Yes to being emotional invested in books - for an author to move us to that level is just incredible.

In the book "Women" I found it interesting that they mentioned that she had feelings of aggression too and why. I feel we hear that veterans have these feelings but it is never explained why and that it is not something they could easily control. It was hard to listen to but worth it to get a better inside.

I like the no chat threads on Ravelry. The ones where you can post your finished project and nothing else. I stopped listening to books I do not like or enjoy, to many other books out there.

I just borrowed The Little Village of Book Lovers while watching this video. Looking forward to the new pattern. I’m also reading the second book of the series Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I just finished The Lies You Wrote by Brianna Labuskes. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. It will be out later this year. I’ve also been enjoying a series by Alan Bradley and Colleen Hoover and Freida McFadden. For socks, I’m working on a test knit and a pair of Heel Toe Do Si Dos by The Crazy Sock Lady, finished a Granny Square Blanket and working on a baby project and several more cozy blankets. And a Doodle Cowl. Soooo many wips. 😂❤❤

Hi Denise! Regarding Ravelry I thought it was just me. I cannot figure it out having tried to follow different conversations in multiple groups. It is NOT for me! I am also not an instagram person. I am sad that I cannot see your postings but I do not have space in my life for any more social media. I manage to follow a few groups on FB like The Woolly Thistle. I did not know about your KAL, like many I listen to podcasts (like yours 😉) or audio books and knit, very enjoyable. I hope your April is more pleasant than your March. Happy knitting🧶 , happy spring 🌷.

I totally understand your frustration with ravelry... it's good for pattern collecting but the social functions are awful. I won't participate in MALs or test knits if they're only on ravelry for that reason. I much prefer instagram or another platform like discord or slack (both might be good options for next year's KAL if you're looking for an alternative platform to use!).
If you need some book recommendations for safe, cozy reads, I highly recommend A Fellowship of Bakers & Magic by JPenner, and Legends and Lattes/Bookshops and Bonedust by Travis Baldree. They are cozy fantasy books that have the most beautiful descriptions of things. They feature found family and character love and I feel like they are a warm cup of coffee in your favorite chair as the sunrises. Slow, gentle, and loving! I love books like that in between the heavier, more intense books.

I hear your Ravelry issues-I am right there with you. I have so much trouble even navigating it. No complaints from me. I have finished a pair of socks, and I am going to post them in Instagram. I will try to post to the Ravelry group. I am an avid reader and an avid knitter. I appreciate your comments on 'The Women'. That is the war I grew up with, so my listening has gone in spurts. I have found that many 'fiction' books that are set in a historical period are a better source of what life was like in that book teaches so much more than any history can. In fiction, you can step in their shoes. I remember that when veterans of the Viet Nam war came home there was no understanding. I don't think Kristen Hannah wants readers to enjoy this book-I think she wants to paint a picture of life in that time. I am listening to The Women bit by bit. I have been totally wrapped up in Maggie Sefton's Knitting Mystery series.

Denise, do you have any recommendations for DK sock yarn? I knitted a pair of DK socks a while back and the yarn pilled so much that I haven't knitted another pair since. But I am looking forward to your new pattern. I'm not knitting any socks at the moment, but the book I am currently reading is a non-fiction one entitled Borderland - A Journey Through the History of Ukraine. I'm learning so much.

I'm not part of the KAL though it's right up my alley.I wanted to thank you for your honest reviews. I have had my eyes on both The Women and Wayward. I was unsure but now I know that they are not for me. I read a lot but tend to read a lot of fiction from Ireland as well as Scotland and England. A lot of it is literary fiction Here's a definition I found: " Literary Fiction, then, is always a study of the human condition and often an exploration of difficult social or political issues that control our lives. For this reason, it’s generally considered more “serious” than genre fiction.". I like crime fiction but find these days that "thrillers" often aren't thrillers.Too many of them just aren't very good. I do love the third book you described and will look for it.

I read a like book many years ago about a nurse who went to Viet Nam and part of her recovery and adjustment to life as a civilian was to write the book. I believe it was "The Road Home". I don't think it's humanly possible to enjoy a book like this because a part of you suffers with the character. At the same time the book can be well written and an informative read/learning experience in understanding the damage war does on one's psychological health. Good job.

🌴☀️I’m a long time subscriber and I LOVE this channel, it is where I met you. I had to understand in general that podcasters use the platform which “serves” them best or perhaps the one that’s more efficient/user friendly in their experience.
If I want to see what’s going on in your space in the world I go to IG not YT. Because I like you so much it doesn’t bother me to just hop over to IG, even though I don’t care for it. Podcasters I find use YT to build a following, then you follow them all over the web based on what’s working best for them & that’s just fine. As far as Ravelry Groups, I’d rather a root canal! It’s frustrating and I do not use it☀️🌴

In case you aren't aware, you can set up your Ravelry messages (AKA "Rav mail") forwarded to your regular email.
If you set your account that way, you will get a message to both your email and a Ravelry message if someone earburns you.
Also, if you have a new reply to *your* post, a little bubble appears over the conversation icon in the top bar on the Ravelry home page.

Hey Denise! If you love historical fiction and fantasy, I'd love to suggest you check out a book called His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik. It's set during the Napoleonic wars except dragons exist. They have captains and crews and comprise an air force for all the warring powers. It gets very political and introspective and I loved it. Not political in the modern sense, but in the sense that many of the conflicts in the books deal with relationships between opposing factions.
