I love helical stripes! I knit my first pair of socks using the technique in 2020, for Joji Locatelli’s Dreaming of Paris socks, and I’ve made many pairs of vanilla socks since then, with the helical stripes. A tip: in order to avoid forgetting to slip the 3 stitches of the new color when you get to them, drape that color’s working yarn toward the front of the needle so you’re sure to see it as you approach.

Ohhh my gosh, Denise, this is why I love you! I get SO inspired and excited after watching your podcasts and seeing what you've been up to. I've been so tempted to try Helical knitting. Like you, I've seen patterns and videos for it, but I haven't pulled the trigger and tried it yet. After seeing how enthused you are about it AND seeing your 2 beautiful socks, onto the bucket list for 2024 it goes! I so appreciate the time you take to "perfect" a technique before you put out a tutorial too. I fell down the "Dice Magic Socks" rabbit hole and am having a blast knitting scrappy socks with 2 different dice (6 sided and 12 sided)....SO much fun! I think a book/sock KAL would be amazing! Like you, I love historical fiction and have a bunch of books here in my library that I want to read. What fun to pair the yarn/sock pattern with the theme of the book. Oh goodness, that makes me want to go stash shopping and book stash snooping ASAp! I would love it if you did it on Ravelry too. I don't post on IG, Ravelry is my kniting "home. It would be such a fun way to get through the winter doldrums and head into spring. :)

I remember reading Kathy's (Grumpedina's "street name") blog, while nursing my youngest. She was my only contact with the outside (knitting) world for a long time.
Thank you SO much for the DK weight sock pattern! I was in an accident 20+ years ago; I recovered, but now ‐many years later- my hands go on strike if I try to knit on tiny needles for any length of time. 1 pair of socks every 3 months is depressing, and knitting socks ~ especially with beautiful yarn ~ should spark joy! I have been knitting long enough (since you were in diapers 😉) that I could do the math and rewrite a pattern in DK gauge, but knitting time is precious and as my kids say, "Ain't got time for that!"
I have a question about the helical socks...
In your experience, is there any reason the helical stripe technique wouldn't work with an afterthought or Fish Lips Kiss heel?

The Girl in the Mist by Krisren Ashley. She is a bit of a spicy writer. The book is set in a lake side tertory. Book back.
Renowned author Delphine Larue needs a haven. A crazed fan has gone over the deep end, and she’s not safe. Her security team has suggested a house by a lake. Secluded. Private. Far away. In a beautiful area of the Northwest close to the sleepy town of Misted Pines. It’s perfect. So perfect, Delphine has just moved in, and she’s thinking she’ll stay there forever.
You are the 9nly teacher I seem to learn from and stuff sticks, so I can't wait for Helical knitting.

I made the hat from the 21 color kit by Blue Sky. It was worth the effort. My daughter loves it and has worn it for four or five years winters. Hi Denise! I enjoyed this episode so much. Just last week I knit my first helical project! My knitting group does a lot of charity knitting and we have a lot of yarn donated to us so we have many partial balls of yarn. Someone told me about helical knitting and I made a hat--with three colors! You are right-it truly is magical. I followed the video on youtube and it turned out great. I enjoyed it so much and now after watching you, I can't wait to try socks. I use a heel flap and gusset so I just checked out that video. I always enjoy your videos but this one was so meaningful for me. Congratulations on reaching that number, but I'm not surprised-you are fun to watch. Thank you

I love doing helical stripes. I've used this technique on socks (self striping, variegated, and solids) sweaters, hats..... It is also great to use when alternating your skeins of the same color to avoid pooling. I have found (especially when using the same colors) that if I drop my yarn to the front of the work, it keeps me from missing the switch. The switch is more obvious when doing 2 colored stripes, but that is especially useful when using the same color so you don't end up having to tink back (don't ask my how many times I had to tink back before realizing this little tip).

Hey Denise! LOVED the Helical knitting - that tiny stripe sock is soooo wonderful - I'm looking at all my sock yarns differently now - the colour changing Patons and then the solids I got to do the traditional toe or heel... just stripe it all instead... not enough hours in the day! Also those fingerless mitts are wonderful - I have some similar patterns, but none in the weight of that one (I think the rav page called for worsted? So that would be a great use of my varied worsted stash... and to maybe do it helically too? Ok, back to what's on my needles... I get distracted way too easily, lol. Look forward to next time! Cheers, Judith 💜

Hi Denise, Thanks for another wonderful episode! Helical knitting is a technique I've never tried but with you as our teacher I know learning will be fun. I have lots of self striping yarn and the socks with the natural yarn plus the ss are gorgeous and fun. I am very very interested in learning how to adapt the shadow wrap heel for different yarn weights. I knit for Wool-Aid and this heel would be much faster since I use a heavier yarn than fingering. Congrats on the crazy amount of subscribers 🎉 you deserve it!

Your joy in the craft is contagious. That’s one of the many reasons why I thoroughly enjoy your podcasts. Three things - 1) I love the idea of combining books with knitting. 2) Please keep your tutorials in real time. I appreciate those extra moments to absorb the new technique, and 3) My late pastor husband was a pretty easy-going guy. However, he wasn’t convinced that knitting was appropriate during the church service. “ Biblical knitting” might have changed his mind. 😂

I LOVE the idea for the KAL! I really hope It'll work. I'd love to pick my own book. I never do book club knitting since all those I come across are for books written English. Since main language is French, it makes reading feel more like a task because it requires more concentration than reading in French.

I can’t imagine being in a bookclub, and being “forced“ to read a book, not in my native language. Where is the fun in that? Helical striped socks look very interesting. My go to heel right now is a heel flap and gusset. Might have to try this soon.

I used to read blogs (and wrote one). Grumperina taught me to cable without a cable needle. I made my first helix pattern last year-a hat- and I could hardly believe the magic. Your enthusiasm and careful details are so encouraging

Hi Denise! I'm always so excited when I see your smiling face and a new episode. Congratulations on 40K subscribers! It is just a number, yes, but more importantly, it's people you've touched with your love, kindness, enthusiasm & sweet spirit. You should be proud.
Now, "biblical" knitting had me cracking up! I can't hear it any other way now. 😆 And you've given me my next read. It's on my list. What a full episode! Love it! 🤎

Hi Denise, I just subscribed so now you have x+1 more! I enjoyed your video and love the idea of doing an audio book and knit project. Count me in! Thank you for the explanation on helical (sp?)knitting. I’ve heard of it in relation to hand dyed yarns and now I get what it means and how to do it. Love the idea of doing it to get stripes too.

Thank you so much for the reading recommendation. On my Audible wish list for later this month. Love helical knitting, used with indie dyed yarn for my sea glass tee last summer, not tried yet for socks...will be interested in your tutorial when time and energy allows you to make it. Xx

Hello, i want to say, ty ty ty for your no fear sock knitting class! I’m making a sock in to small thread with to big needles, simply cause i got so excited watching your class I couldn’t wait to start the techniques 😂😂😂 Good yarn and needles are on the way! Sock looks like crap but i got the heel done as a first time sock knitter without any problems 👍🥳 That says something about your teaching skills ❤️🥰 I love how you put together a series about EVERYTHING so I don’t have to jump from channel to channel. You will be my main teacher 😂😂😂 since i watched the whole class, I’m going to start watching all the poscasts now, which will keep me busy for a while 🤓 Again ty and greetings from Belgium! Grats on the 40k subscribers, you deserve it ❤️

Great Video, I looked up a video on how to not jog a knitted hat and it came out beautiful with 3 colors and knit a double rim. Maybe I will try socks. Thanks

Another lovely episode Denise! I'm ready to cast on a pair of helical socks - but first have to do the easy peasy scrappy kal and finish the other two pairs on my needles! Your book recommendation sounds great and I'm off to look for it on Amazon. I love the idea of a book paired with knitting KAL. but hope it can be on insta too - since I am not a huge ravelry user.

This would be a good way to use my self striping sock scrapes. I will pair them with light gray or cream and get another pair! Contrast heels, toes and cuffs.

I loved this episode!!!! First, let me send some gratitude your way. I just finished my first pair of real socks made possible with your No Fear Sock Knitting Class. Making socks has been on my list for quite some time and I did it thanks to you! Second, I am excited by helical knitting and can't wait for your tutorial! Third, historical fiction is my favorite too and just added The Little Wartime Library to my list. Fourth, pairing a book with knitting is such a great idea! Your enthusiasm makes is all so much fun!
