This was THE BEST tutorial I have seen for color changes. And your voice is so soothing… thank you so much for the time you spend putting these tutorials together!! ❤️
I totally agree about the soothing nature of her voice. I get a tickle out of how excited she gets to share things with us! And, she is so calm - even when her kids are noisy in the background lol! life happens right?! But I know that would rattle some people on camera lol!
Thank you! This is by far the most comprehensive tutorial. I have struggled with color changes for so long. You are a wonderful teacher, and what a gift to share with us!
This is a wonderful video. Thank you! Oh my, LOVE IT when I heard the 'same' tone in such an experienced knitter....gasping for breath when the needle slipped off of the stitches. I thought that PANIC sound was only for me because I'm a newby. When that happens with quite a stitch pattern, the panic is like a volcano uncorking, lol.
My gosh, Denise, this is amazing!! Up until now, I've been tying a knot when changing colour and I've always hated doing that and how it looks. Also, for those of us to whom 1.5 inches of ribbing feels like 1.5 miles of ribbing, what a great way to break up the monotony by changing colour!! I've now tied my last ever knot in my socks!. You're a magician who shows the audience how the trick is done while performing the magic! X
I am a new knitter and making a sock was my goal. Thank you I succeeded! I am anxious to start another sock as I have learned so much from your tutorials. The sock I made has some errors but I have confidence I can correct these errors. Thank you Denise!!!
aHaaaaaaaaa ! So I learned previously from you - the stitches ON The needle are considered not worked - and here you do count them ! Such sense ! Yesss ! Oh , I'd have an Apple ' Crisp ' on your desk after school !!!! This is just priceless knowledge !!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE these classes ! Thank you SO much, Denise !!! Appreciation abounding ! xo marcia
You are an amazing teaching and you are such a beautiful knitter. I'm so excited to try all this . Can't wait for the next video. I love that you do the real time!
I have watched endless videos on weaving in as you go and just couldn't get the feel of it, but thank you Denise, I'm finally catching on. Thank you for your repetition and patient teaching.
A good friend told me about you. You are an amazing teacher. So many tips and tricks that have already helped me so much! I love that you knit in real-time and that some videos show the same thing several times. I know that you “worry” about being repetitive because some people don’t like it, but as you say, they can fast forward! Personally, I like seeing it several times. THANK YOU for putting these videos together.
This is a winner (as are all of your teaching videos) and I will now start to make socks from all the leftover sock yarns that are in my stash. By doing so, it will allow me to perfect this technique. Thanks so much for being such an incredible teacher!!!!!😄
So, so, so helpful! I've been anxious about changing color in the ribbing but not any longer! So far I've made your No Fear Shorty socks (3 times) and your One More Step socks. (They came out beautifully thanks to your thorough videos! You're right, repetition is key, at least for me!) Now I can add stripes to my sock repertoire! Thank you! (I also love the I Love Books and Sock Knitting progress keeper!)
Just found this. Thank you!!!!!! It takes a bit of practice, but your clear, slow, repetitive instructions done on actual fingering weight yarn (instead of aran weight with size 11 needles) helps so much. I subscribed!
Ah, Denise, pure magic!!! And thanks for the link to the continental version. Your repeated demonstrations on the video were wonderful. It took a lot of rewinds to get my first color change done, but that’s what’s wonderful about video. I can see you do it as many times as I need. When I think of how I've struggled to start new colors of yarn, or even add a new skein when I run out. This method is going to change my knitting life forever for the better.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I’ve always thought i had to use self striping yarn in order to achieve a nicely striped sock. I hate dyeing self striping yarn especially since my place is not big enough to wind/dye thick striped yarn. Planning on dyeing some small skeins of yarn and trying this method out asap!
oh my! Thank you for this video! It was the perfect thing I was looking for since I'm working on my first sock with a different coloured cuff! Thank you!
Denise, I was glad to locate this video. Your explanation and demonstration were spot on. I’ve added this to my favorite videos for easy access when I actually need the technique. Thank you for demonstrating several times for reinforcement. You are an excellent teacher. I still want to knit like you “when I grow up”! Your hands make the stitches look effortless and your “real time” is so efficient.
This is the most life changing/ game changing video I have EVER watched on youtube. Weaving in ends like that looked like knitting witchcraft. Thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial!
I am a RN who knits. I knit to RELAX! New stitches have stressed me. Your tone and explanations are absolutely the BEST! I THANK YOU profusely for taking the time to explain in a manner that takes the stress of something new away. 🥰🙏🏼🙌🏻❤️
Hi Maria thank you so much for your message and for all that you do. I studied to be an RN when I was in college and changed my major. The responsibility was just too big for me at the time. I’m so happy this video was able to give you a few moments to relax and enjoy the stitches!!
Oh my goodness Denise! Thank you so so much for this 🌟 Like you I couldn't get the hang of weaving in the ends with the continental either & knitted a long pair of socks having to sew in so many ends. What a revelation & appreciate you doing it in real time 🙏🏼👏🏻 🌟
I want to add that I've learned this a long time ago and I just never go it. Your follow through after the under/overs really made it sink in better than the first time I encountered it.
Thank you! This was absolutely helpful. Can’t wait to try all this great new techniques with my Earth Tone Girl minis set on my No Fear Pattern. Thank you so much again.
Thank you so much for this tutorial, especially the weaving in the ends as you go. That is amazing and I wish someone had taught me this years ago. I was directed here by Edible Thoughts Makes podcast.
So glad you explained this. Being new to socks, these videos will be well received 😊. Stay safe and well to you and your family. Thanks from Australia 🐨🐨🦘🦘
You are so very welcome Lesley!!! It's truly my pleasure!! I hope you and your family stay safe and well also!! xoxo. Just a side note...my aunt and uncle live in Sydney!! It's a very small world!!!
Well shut the front door!! Bravo Denise for showing us this amazing technique!! Game changer right there for sure!!! Happy Easter to you and your family and stay safe so you can continue passing on all your knitting wisdom 🤗🇨🇦👏🏻🌈
Great tip at trapping the old yarn for scrappy socks. I do this technique for colorwork but never tried with scrappy socks, which I never make. But will most definitely go buy your shortie sock pattern and try with scrap yarn! Thank you😉
You are so welcome Rosemary. It’s funny how we don’t always think to apply things we know to other projects. And thank you so much for buying my pattern! it means the world to me!!
Thank you so much Denise, I am actually knitting a pair of scrappy socks at the moment and that change of colour so there is no jog is extremely helpful! Thank you as always for your super videos. Happy Knitting!
Yes!!! Jogless knitting😆😆😆😆 I'll finally get to learn this properly!!!! And hopefully a much better way of joining new colors compared to the way I do it now (not the best lol). Just started the video, can't wait to see the rest and the next videos🤗🤗🤗🤗 Okay, what the freak!!! Knitting witch magic🤣🤣🤣🤯🤯🤯 knit the initial color change row, knit only, trap the tails, and there's a crazy loop, then you pull the tails to erase the loop and that creates the ultimate join and jogless knit. My mind is blown. I LOVE IT!!! I can use this on not just socks but any project😄😄😄😄😄😄 Denise, this sounds crazy but this video/ learning this new method is exactly what my mind needs to kickstart my husband's birthday today, April 12. Happiness created vs sadness (you know about my loss), thank you for this video/ teaching moment 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 this really does put my mind in a happy place... gives me the right mind set to start the day & celebrate his day vs being terribly depressed over it. Again sounds weird. But, thank you!!!!!!
Hello my friend, Your excitement is infectious and I'm so happy this had made YOU so happy! And i'm even happier to hear that it has eased your feelings about your husband. Being in a happy place mentally is so important right now!!!! It doesn't sound weird at all...and you are so very welcome!
Thank you for posting the tutorial. I think my favorite part of the lesson is changing colors and how you incorporate the new yarn into the pattern. The way you carry the old yarn is almost like intarsia knitting - carrying the float. Thank you for the excellent tutorial
@@EarthtonesgirlPodcast - i thought about how I would feel if it were me receiving the feedback and I may have over reacted myself. I am glad we came together. I am eager to learn from you. One problem I encountered when knitting toe-up socks is the cuff is always too tight. How do you gauge the elasticity when knitting cuff down socks? Ever since I learned how to knit socks, I knitted toe up. I did knit my mom a pair of thrummed booties and I knitted them cuff down. Do you think it is easier to get the cuff to fit the calf when knitting cuff-down?
Oh Deb, thank you so much for this. Now you have me in tears (good tears). I learned very good lesson from all this. I’m so happy we came together too and that you’re here “in my class”. So let’s get to your question. I have the solution to your problem. I hated toe up for that exact reason but there is a bind off that is brilliant and remedies the problem. It’s called the Extra Stretchy No Flare Bind Off. It provides extra space between the bound off stitches and eliminates the tightness. And you can get a tight cast on with Cuff down socks too. So no, cuff down is not a guarantee. You also asked about knitting knee highs but I don’t remember you exact question. I’m happy to answer if you ask again. Hope this all helps. @@EarthtonesgirlPodcast - I too felt a kindred connection, what a blessing! I have knitted a pair of knee-hi socks, and i am actually wearing them now. They are my favorite sock. I did use the stretchy bind-off method, but they still didn't fit right; so, I ordered the thread elastic and i sewed elastic into the cuff. Now, they fit great. Yes, your tutorial has helped me very much. I am thrilled to be in your class. I have learned many lessons today myself, and only one was knitting. I got checked in my spirit. I never want anyone to feel I am being critical. I should have been nicer or just kept my mouth shut. In the end. God always knows a person's heart. There is something about you that drew me in to watch your video. I don't have the internet except for my cell phone. I am working remotely from home using work hotspot; therefore, I have to get off for the day. I will be able to watch from my cell, just not comment. Thank you for your time, and for the lesson you also taught me.TTUL
Hi Deb, I'm so happy this has all worked out, with your socks/knee highs and between us!!! I don't like unrest in any form... If you have any other questions please know I'm here and more than happy to help. Thanks so much Deb..Truly...
Thank you so much for another great tutorial! I was getting concerned that I would have to throw a few stitches, but then you anticipated that and sent us continental knitters to The Cozy Knitter. You are awesome thank you so much for these videos.
You are my queen. I am using dk wt yarns to do your color change in a cuff…knit the row of plain knit stitch . Yowza! I have a weirdness a stitch 64, but it appears to be 63/64 or 98.4%. I am a then going to fish kiss lips on this test sock. It’s 95 or nothing on that patented heel. 16 pages of instructions is intimidating.
Another wonderful tutorial! I know you've stated the woven ends will not come out, I'll have to try it. Given the slack was so easy to tighten, it seems to me it would be that easy to come undone....but I have nothing to lose. Thanks for the great video, looking forward to the next one.
I totally understand your concern about the ends coming out but I've never had that happen...not once!!! Is there a first time for everything, yes...but I really think you'll be fine!! You may want to weave in for a few extra stitches on each end just to be safer.
Whatever I did, I tried to do what you said, I wove in the ends - it didn’t work cuz I still got jogs. Some of them were better than the others, but now I’m sad because I just kept going despite things not working out as the video said and can’t figure out what I did wrong. Seems to me it has to do with the very first weave stitch. Guess I’ll need to watch it again. I’m making baby socks in the Hudson Bay colors to match a baby blanket.
It is a very easy and good way to change to a new color. In Denmark this method of changing yarn has been used for a long time. There is no reason to break the old color of yarn until you have finished the weaving with the new color of yarn. Then you break the old color.
Although I learned the weaving in technique when doing Fairisle colourwork, for some strange reason I never used it in my socks. Thanks for the reminder of what a beautiful technique this is.
Firstly, amazing channel, it's always fun to see how there's always more tricks left to learn (and I'm very hyped to start using this method to make very colorful socks!). I am however kinda confused at your comment about how to count the rounds. You say that usually you don't count the live stitches on the needle - yet I have never heard of that before, could I ask why that is? Or do you have a video explaining that that I could check out :)
Hi Jeanne, With regard to working stripes I do explain how the live stitches are counted/not counted in the video. And in general, when counting/measuring rounds/rows you start from under the needle no over it where the live stitches are. Hope that helps.
This was THE BEST tutorial I have seen for color changes. And your voice is so soothing… thank you so much for the time you spend putting these tutorials together!! ❤️

You are so very welcome Theresa!!!! I”m so happy you enjoyed it!!!
Very good! I found this problem with the Izzy doll. Thank you!
Thank you!!
Great tutorial. Thank you. 🇬🇧
Thanks for watching Elaine!!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!
Another great class! Thank you 😊
Thank you so very much! And I thank you for watching!
Thanks Denise!
You are very welcome Bex!!!
I’m making baby socks in the Hudson Bay colors to match a baby blanket.
thank you so much for the video it was very informative, I'm working on a pair of scrappy socks
Hi Gloria, thank you so much for your message and for watching. I’m so happy you found it so helpful!! Yay for scrappy socks!!!
It is a very easy and good way to change to a new color. In Denmark this method of changing yarn has been used for a long time. There is no reason to break the old color of yarn until you have finished the weaving with the new color of yarn. Then you break the old color.
Hi Inger, thank you so much for your message. As I said, I did not invent this. I just wanted to share the knowledge with other knitters!
Although I learned the weaving in technique when doing Fairisle colourwork, for some strange reason I never used it in my socks. Thanks for the reminder of what a beautiful technique this is.
You are so welcome Brenda!!! Thank you so much for watching!!
Hi Jeanne,
With regard to working stripes I do explain how the live stitches are counted/not counted in the video.
And in general, when counting/measuring rounds/rows you start from under the needle no over it where the live stitches are.
Hope that helps.
