Pikmin 2 veteran here, I really loved the challenge and the massacre of pikmin. Edit at top: Forgot to mention, but this was pretty impressive all things considered. Especially since it seems like you don't like this one, at the very least that's how you portrayed it here. I have some general advice for the future if you ever decide to come back to pikmin 2. In the caves that have a lot of friendly-fire enemies (like the rock shooting beetle guys), they can do so much more damage than your character. That would be useful in caves like the one with the big bloyster (fun fact he only goes after the controlled leader, and nothing else. Use that to your advantage). Use the red rock shooters since they home in on the player, and kill everyone on that floor with your pikmin in the corner with the second commander. I actually often times prefer to go alone against enemies like that. In the same room I mentioned earlier, I no-deathed it by putting my pikmin in a corner and then having the swarm of beetles kill each other. Took some patience but days do not really go by when you're in there. I used the last red beetle to kill itself by angling the rocks. For the gun guys, they can be turned into a benefit at times. They deal friendly fire damage so in caves like the one with the army of mini-bulborbs and the two gatling ones, have the gats kill all the small bulborbs. You can then proceed to get them stuck in the wall and with the rocket punch hit them through the wall (be careful since their aoe can go through the wall too). Yes, you can even use the gat guys to kill each other (not themselves unfortunately), but of course do beware of the regen thing. Btw that wall trick does work on bulborbs as well, but sometimes they can reach you depending on how thick the wall actually is. I could be wrong, but I always felt like the rocket punch makes the third punch go farther. For the electric anode beetles, time doesn't move. Just throw one yellow at a time and when it gets back up throw another in challenges like this one. It goes by faster than you might think since it gets up kinda quick, and by the time the whole horde is on it, it's damaged pretty badly. For the poison beetle, run around the entire map with a poison pikmin (fastest pikmin for if you accidentally release it. The other pikmin types won't really be impacted if you're carrying them through it), and you'll know the general area it is at once it pops out. Also, some of them contain treasures so you can use that to track them. One of my most common tactics is to simply run through the entire floor with a single pikmin in hand, and see what traps pop out. Doesn't stop the ones that guard treasures, and those things suck, but it does mitigate the ones that will spawn while walking. Also fun fact, for the one bulborb that always knows your location, in those areas with easy to fall locations, it's often beneficial to just have them take a skydiving lesson. If you're concerned about the treasure in them, it spawns on top. Trust me, they do not respawn after that fall, and it's a lot better than taking them head on. Now, this doesn't help with a run like this in particular, but for the flying bomb guys, there's an easy way to deal with them. If they drop a bomb, and THEN you slap them down, the bomb will knock out a good portion of their health if you time it right. I say this run in particular because, well the pikmin would have been lost. The water wraith I believe runs off of a set path instead of actually going after you or your pikmin, at least in this one. I'm not certain since I didn't look at the code, but he seems to go in cycles. Learning his cycle isn't too bad, and fun fact sometimes you can even get him stuck behind treasures. I've done that a couple of times and well, it made things interesting. Another trick that could help out in future runs, the day timer doesn't go in caves but pikmin trapped in the ground bloom even in caves. Don't underestimate that. It's still a very hard game, but if you stop caring about the day timer and instead treat each floor as a puzzle, it's not so bad. First priority imo is finding a location to hide your pikmin. Then after that exploring, and then forming a plan and executing said plan, or killing everything on the floor via themselves. I also recommend breaking any eggs you come across in caves without your pikmin, since the mites will disappear quickly but any nectar will remain for the rest of the floor. If you come across situations like the black bulborb with no easy way to kill it, you could just trap it. What i mean by that is put some pikmin behind a wall that the bulborb will try to walk past. Might take a few tries but if done right, could easily limit it. Only thing to worry about from them is if carrying pikmin go past. This is coming from a guy that has 100 percented the game with 5 or 6 deaths in 11 days before. There are a lot of bs areas in this game (I'm sure I'm forgetting half of them), and so if you need further advice ask the community. Pikmin 2 is the "hardest" because it operates differently than the other games. All of them are based on time management, so mistakes for that have to be taken into account. Pikmin 2, minus the day timer on the surface, doesn't have any time limits. I often find myself going towards a threat with one type of pikmin, usually the most dangerous one, taking it out and coming back with the next most dangerous in the situation. I also noticed you didn't really use the stun on the purples all that much, which is a shame since that is the most powerful ability they have. If you came back to the empress fights with a lot of purples, you could even win without a single loss (well, minus the little annoying larvae guys, but a captain at the end of the empress isn't a bad play to deal with that. On a timer with that one since they don't dodge the larvae for some reason).
And I forgot to add this to my comment as well, but there are only a handful of enemies that will chase you across the map, the black bear bulborb, the gatling guy and the water wraith from what I remember. The rest of them for the most part have an invisible leash, so you can use that too.
As someone who gets really bad anxiety from timers, I've only ever played Pikmin 2 because its timers are super forgiving I find, so I was kinda amazed to hear that it's generally considered the hardest game in the series. o.o
I mean, if you don't get really bad anxiety from timers, you'll notice that the other pikmin games are super forgiving with timers aswell. That water cannon is silly in how it can target the other pilot. But yeah, definitely changes things when you can't freaking whistle them back. (The crab can go die.)
Caves with Groinks or Bulbears are made much easier if you can convince them to walk directly toward you... When you're on the far side of a terrain gap big enough for them to fall into. As a bonus, any treasure they're holding will automatically respawn back into a nearby valid location. Plus it's just hilarious watching them walk toward you like "Gooooonna getcha!!" and then fall into the abyss like total dumbasses 🤣
My main issue with Pikmin 2 is how tedious the final caves get because your pikmin are so valuable, especially your whites and purples because of candypop buds and you NEED 100 purples to get all the treasure, you find that the lack of a cave time limit generally means you spend your time taking your captains and punching everything you can to death. I wound up doing a no death Pikmin 2 run completely by accident.
