Great work on the cabinet! I can tell you put a lot of hard work into it. The decal process and placement has always tested my patience. Well done. Don
Nice one Buzz, you’ve made a corkin’ good job of the radio cabinet. Once the radio is all back together, it will both look and sound great. In my humble opinion, Zenith are the best American domestic radios. Cheers ol’ chap, Phil.
ello guv'na.....When I was a young chap, when you saw anything with Zenith on it , that meant quality. Blimey, when I see you in your white mad scientist lab coat, I almost expect to see Igor delivering you a brain..hahaha ...cheerio, pip pip and all that rot.....Buzz...(.by the way... I learned all that british lingo from old Sherlock Holmes films)
I know this vid has been around for awhile but i stuck one of my dinner plates together with Duco Cement not expecting much but it's been a year. Plates still together. My father used to call those small tubes "peanut tubes". My doctor had that same AM/FM radio in his waiting room. His waiting room being in the high ceiling parlor of an old Victorian house. My friend across the street had cause to excavate an old trash pit in an old pasture now wooded over. We pulled out an English transfer ware plate in pieces about 1840.The pattern was blue. The duco cement put those pieces together too. The Doctor always had classical music on while you waited for him to open the squeaky wheeled pocket doors.
The first one of these I encountered was placed gently on the ground at the local town dump. I was 17 at the time, and just there to discard the rubbish. I loaded it lovingly into my Valiant station wagon and took it home. I plugged it in after a cursory inspection and not only did it seem to work quite well I was astounded at the tonal response for a series-wired table radio. I've had several others since then. Really worthy resto project. Yours looks good.
When you showed the great paint job on the case in the far distance I could hear the "So Called Purist" screaming what lungs they have left out. Glad to know there are still people out there with the Chutzpah to do what they feel and know what looks good to them. Good Work on putting the puzzle back together. I know when Humpty Dumpty fell down he was unable to be put back together again but you provide that to be a false statement.
I hear voices in my head when I watch your videos. Then I realized it's just the video itself. Now my analyst won't be able to send his kids through college. BTW it's Really a stupendous video Buzz.
Just came around by curiosity, watched until the end as i do like you way of composing this video. As i like your attitude as well i went subbed;) Thanx for this one!
Ok, Buzz, I'm very impressed with your dial lettering work. Excellent job, my friend. And fine work on that shattered bakelite cabinet. This project will go down in the annals of radio history as: "The Great Zenith Pumpkin Restoration". :-) Regards, John
Hi John..... Somehow,,, I kept hearing your voice encouraging me on......what's that all about???.. lol.....Also, I think wifey should take you to the eye doctor...tsk tsk..tsk..that radio is painted apple red...not orange......the old folks home is not far for you in the future.....LOL.... by the way John.....I searched for 2 days to get an audio clip of you saying doily.....I remember you had a video mentioning doilies..I just couldn't find it..LOL.....Buzz
Hi Buzz, A great video. Thanks for showing how to do the radio station numbers. I could be wrong, but I once heard that the single white dot by the 100 marks a radio station in Chicago that Zenith owns. I think they had their headquarters in Chicago. Regards, Tom
THOMMGB , You are correct. That station was WEFM, at 99.5 MHz. Zenith Radio Corporation owned and operated that station, and it was located in Chicago, IL, where their corporate and manufacturing facilities were. I was told that Zenith operated that station so that their Chicago customers would have a station to listen to (on their Zenith FM radios). Back in the day (1950), WEFM was probably one of the only (or perhaps the only) FM broadcast station on the air in Chicago. This was FM radio at its infancy, and Zenith Radio was probably its earliest pioneer. I loved listening to WEFM for many years. They broadcasted a balanced mix of classical, semi-classical, broadway, and even some folk music, from time to time. Brief commercials for Zenith radios and televisions were made once each half hour. They were on the air each day, starting at 9:30 in the morning, and signed off at midnight. I was saddened when Zenith sold the station in 1965. Since then, the station has exclusively had a country music format.
Hi Buzz, I love your video! I had to pause it a ton of times because I was laughing so many times. It’s such a terrible shame that your Bakelite Case was busted so bad, I just hate tossing the dice when I buy radios on eBay. Nowadays I tell them how I’d like it packed and just hope they pack it that way. I love the color you painted this radio, it looks amazing. The reason I wanted to reach out to you is that I just got the same radio and I knew that it didn’t work. When I opened it up the selenium rectifier must have shorted out and overloaded the filter caps and they in turn must have overloaded the high-wattage resisters because they burned up and burned up a lot of what was right around that area. I was hoping you might consider selling me a copy of your SAMs Photofact Photos and legends showing the internal components so I can identify the stuff I need to replace. I’d really appreciate it, I have the Riders but it doesn’t show a component view. Please consider it if you don’t mind. You can email me at budsipad at gmail Dot Com. Thank you so much and not matter what, you did one hell of a job on this radio, you should be really proud! Buddy
These sound great, really nice tone, when finished, despite not being a Philco. Had to throw that in, for Tim and Art. Good on ya, Buzz, doing that tedious dial work, It really paid off. I kind of like leaving radios, at least their original color, but, sometimes, you have to change it up, when a cabinet is that busted up. The red looks good and it'll really look sharp, with the polished dial. Looking forward to seeing the finished set.
Thanks Al,.... most of my plastic radios are painted cause all I could afford were beat up and cracked ones..I love to spruce em up and make then shine again... Regards, Buzz
I enjoy your videos! We need humor in our lives and you are doing a great job on that. I'd like to let you in a couple of products which I have used extensively, as have all of the plastic/metal building kits hobbyists, especially model railroaders. Micro Sol and Micro Set made by Microscale Industries. If you do more decals in the future they are a must have. Will make your life much easier and the results will astound you. Cheers!
Glad to see that you used the FYI from old64goat's vids on doing that bondo on this rig. Now it's part Zuniv, and part Ford van. Good to see it's all fixed up so you can listen to Rush Limbach and Mark Levin... don't tell the cemocrats!
Thanks umajunkcollector.... Bakelite and bondo make a powerful mix. I added ADC to the radio. Whenever a Democrat comes on the radio, It automatically mutes them....lol.... Buzz
Larry EllisMy graphite golf club shafts would sometimes arrive all broken into many pieces. Finally traced it to the temperature change when FedEx planes descended from great heights, where the shafts had frozen. I think that is how your case arrived in pieces.
Great restoration Buzz. Could you tell me what type of spray paint you used on the cabinet? lacquer or enamel? What a wonderful job you did keep the videos coming.
Hey Buzz, Where did you find that paperwork for your radio? The dial string has come off of my K725, but from what I can see the set up looks exactly like yours, but I can't figure out how to restring the string around the wheel over the speaker. Thanks, Gary
I guess you don't like my "singing" at 8:37 to 8:50 "crap" you say....LOL Oh well what can I say...nice job on the radio Buzz. Please lit me know when you get your package. BTW the sounds I recorded are NOT me "singing"...LOL
LOL.. Old64goat.....I loved your song,, I had originally had a rap song on when i said "crap music",...but I edited in yours for comedy effect.....I love your song....When I get your package, I might use it again for the video....At least, I wont get a copyright hit..LOL.. Buzz
Well to be very honest with you my "singing" is better than Rap-Crap" but ANYTHING is better than rap crap...LOL. If you do make a video on the camcorder feel free to use any of my sounds and yours as well, but I think my "singing" would be too hard on your viewers ears...LOL
