Nice project, Buzz. We must remember that radios made in this era were designed for lower B+, since much of the nation was powered by 110-115 VDC utilities, AC power had not became universal, and would not until well after WWII. So the AC/DC designs would work for everyone, except maybe some small areas that received 25 cps service.Great project, tanks for sharing. Dick
+WB8MHE Hi WB...I had the radio powered @ 110-115 with variac...That B+ is probably close.....Radio is rated @ only 30W....We shall see with new caps next week....
Dickel did warn you Buzz not to make a wish on that old lamp! That million you wished for Dickel probably knows where it's at!! Thanks for the new project and another great video.........
As an old dental lab man who use to melt gold in asbestos lined crucibles, ( who knew back then ) that you're probably okay with that minimal exposure. Geez we used that stuff a lot.. Any who, looks like another fun adventure.......Carl
+skycarl Our wood stove doors were lined with asbestos rope. And I used to change my own brakes on my cars and never gave it a single thought using the Raybestos replacement shoes and pads, lol.
Buzz, You're off to a good start. At least the radio works. I may be mistaken, but I think my doctor told me I needed more asbestos in my diet. :-) Regards, Tom
+Buzz1151 Hey Buzz, watch The Paleface sometime. Just before the indians try burning old Buster Keaton at the stake, he sews himself up an asbestos suit to wear under his clothes. It's hilarious.
I remember back in jr. high, somebody gave a buddy of mine a real old CB radio to fiddle with. On it's maiden voyage, there was a cap on top of the chassis that blew like that. It was wooshing and spraying it's guts all over the place. Pretty cool looking. My buddy didn't think so, though. LOL.
This looks like a nice little series Buzz. My personal rule is I don't acquire radios which have asbestos. Mainly because like you I would have to deal with it, and I just don't want to. I guess if it was a rare valuable piece I might consider it. Nice demo of the burning Cap. You couldn't have planned it better. How does Mrs. Buzz feel about the new gnomish you? As usual, thanks for sharing.
+Stephen Moore ......thanks Stephan..that little asbestos was nothing, but Dickel was hiding in the garage with 10 dust masks on..haha...Mrs Buzz like me gnome small, so she can kick my ass....lol...Buzz
That was hilarious Buzz. You looked like the Abe Lincoln if he was a gnome. That look like an old GE self tapping replacement plug. I used them before in the 1960's as a young whipper snapper. They are not usually reusable since the teeth are basically good for one shot, (maybe two) when the lever is depressed into the wire. The teeth bite right through the cord insulation. The cord is cut, then you carefully split the two insulated halves and then the cord is shoved into the plug and one part takes one track and the other half takes another track and then you squeeze that lever down. I think ARVIN made Silvertone radios. I'd wear a mask with that asbestos. Series wired tube filaments. I bet the asbestos is to keep the wood from catching on fire. Well. maybe just to keep the warm radio from wrecking someones table's finish. Not sure what is so hot under there though. Wow! Mark Trail is still in the funny papers! The radio works? AMAZING! I liked the melting cap too! Great video!
+Lockemeister Hi Meister...How are you? Hope you aren't at deaths door ...Got an email from Brendan. Seems he's had a rough time and was in the hospital........Lets hope he recovers soon.....You're right about the plug. I examined it carefully and it cannot be used again. Screams of the 60's, and probably was put on the radio the same time as the Solar electrolytic cap. Funny that this radio had asbestos on it, as its only rated @ 30 watts. Be well my old, pal, my buddy, my chum..haha...Buzz
+Buzz1151 eh, I'm ok but getting use to the CPAP machine is taking some time. Problem with the mask fitting properly. Seems to be working though Apparently had sleep apnea real bad. Stopping breathing 41 times an hour. Glad Brendan is doing better. Thanks for thinking about me Buzz, 'ole buddy, 'ol pal, 'ol chum...Hah! Was that from I Love Lucy and something Ricky said to Fred? To try to get him to do something.
+Lockemeister Good to hear your improvement...As for the "'ole buddy, 'ol pal, 'ol chum" thing, I'm a child of the 50's and 60's..Was something on TV.... as it was my God growing up..Buzz
+Lockemeister I understand about the cpap. It's like at first all you want to do is fight with it and it feels like it's trying to make your lungs explode but eventually you'll settle in with it and breathe normally and wake up in the mornings feeling lots better.
Buzz that's a really nice Sears silvertone I'm just getting to this video now I picked up a Sears silvertone cost a whopping $5 , It was going to be tossing the dumpster
Hi Buzz ! Great videos I have just subscribed to you channel, brilliant ! I love the background music too. I must find out more. Is the metal work live in the radios that you fix. That Dickel gives me the creeps. I would watch my back with that little chap around. He tried to set fire to you. Does he live with you? Anyway looking forward to your shows. best regards Dave UK.
+David dave Greeting UK David...I'm not understanding the "metal work live"comment..Are you asking if the chassis is hot?.If so..The sears radio has no power transformer, and very well could be hot..I'll have to check in the next video. Dickel will grow on you as you keep watching him...Yes he lives with me, the lay-about moocher..LOL...
You should have about 150 to 160 volts B+, the rectifier tube may be weak and even though you don't have any hum the electrolytic cap may have lost some of its capacity.
You and Dickle are spending too much time together, he is beginning to sound like you. And now you look like him. Cool little radio, looks like a worthwhile project. Do you have a ham license? If not bet you would enjoy the hobby. Lots of electronic building still active especially in the QRP arena.
+plantopguy5 Hi Planto..Nope, I have no interest in ham radio as I'm a Howard Hughes recluse type with no interest in speaking to strangers in person or on a radio.....haha..and thats the truth...Buzz
Thanks Buzz for the friday night laugh. This should be an easy one for you, but the B+ is pretty low, good luck with it. I know I've had my share of asbestos, hasn't killed me yet.
A long long time ago, in a land far far away, a young lad once had a beat up radio. So he got some self adhesive CONTAACT vinyl from SS Kresge's that looked like wood grain. He applied that stuff on his radio case. Hmmm, an easy fix until the heat made it wrinkle. Ooo Ooo Ooo Look at dat, look at dat contact peel! Don
Hey Buzz. I am looking forward to this series. Great to hear it playing right off the bat. Dickel tried to warn you. Ha ha Now your twins :) Take care Buzz. Bobby
Onward & upward with the new series! Isn't Dickel in charge of asbestos removal?? Wow Buzz, Timothy Leary AND the Brady Bunch on the same video...That's one heck of a juxtaposition!!
+Tim Dockery .....Good catch on Leary and the Brady Bunch....Dickel was cowering in the garage as I removed the asbestos so scared that he was guzzling his Dickel whiskey...buzz
A great radio to work on, but you do have to be seriously cautious around that asbestos. The man that was teaching me abotu radios years ago ended up with asbestos poisoning and it was sad to watch him deteriorate. (To be fair he did have asbestos all over his basement on the water pipes and heat ducts and the old boiler.) Back then in the 70's we didn't know the dangers of it, and were carefree about removing it and breathing it in.
+John Schroeder The only store I knew about is Norvac electronics in Beavertown...but its not there anymore. I order all my parts online, but I wish I could get them locally....Buzz
Hey Buzz1151, a radidio that didn't "buzz"! How do ya like that? What, no Pope-mania on there? For a small "contribution", perhaps Francis will bless your radio workshop. On my radio, some gal said that everybody loves his holiness, yeppirs, everybody. That's why he waves to screaming and cheering fans in a bullet proof Popemobile with lots of police protection. Even Obama is all smiles, dingle Barry loves the pontiff, the dope and the pope. The Donold
+Buzz1151 Gasp! dit-dot-dash---news flash....just heard John Boner (spelling) stepped down as speaker, (finally). Had something to do with the pope and John being a devout Catholic. Also something about gummint shutdown. Strange stuff. Is it a full moon outside too?
+umajunkcollector yes, but the pope stopped the pope mobile procession, (risking his very life!) for a little girl who spontaneously, (that's what they say), broke though security and ran up to deliver a special message about undocumented people in this country. (can't say illegal aliens anymore). I can't prove the whole thing was pre planned, but then again I can't prove it wasn't either. Oh why am I so jaded??? the purity of an innocent girl who wanted to see the pope. Oh, dear.
Oy Vay, and the little girl touched Pop Frank, so he waved that magic hand, and allakazaam, he blessed her. ?maybe someday she'll be a saint like Mary? Did you like the Cheech and Chong pope experiance? Don
Looks like another great project Buzz and I look forward to the restore. Thanks for sharing
+Billy “stormlight” Steen ......thanks Billy..lets hope so..Buzz

+Wilson Bibleheimer thank wilson...the spell wore off and now Buzz is normal size...
Great watching these clips. Good precaution on wetting the asbestos!
+Tom VH thanks..there will no video for 2 weeks...
I like when you opened the lamp and that noise from the little rascals.
it's a great sound effect
As an old dental lab man who use to melt gold in asbestos lined crucibles, ( who knew back then ) that you're probably okay with that minimal exposure. Geez we used that stuff a lot.. Any who, looks like another fun adventure.......Carl

Buzz you are never boring!!
👍
Buzz,
You're off to a good start. At least the radio works.

+Dave Lee its a very distinctive sound now that I have experienced it,,,Buzz
I probably would had fixed the electronics and left the cabinet alone.
Is that old Raychem heat shrink I see in there?
👍

+bones007able is that why my nose is bleeding???...damn
Buzz: You mentioned going to go get parts. Is there an electronic parts house in OUR area? I'm in the city that hosts NIKE/TEKTRONIX.
