I think what your doing is a good way to go about this resto. All you want is to make it look presentable enough to put in your home. If your going to go over it with a magnifying glass of course you'll see the repairs but just to have it look nice and play well in your living room or on the deck, Thats what your going to have. I cant wait for the next video on this radio! Regards, Art
I've never used wood filler where it shows, I could never get it to take a stain to match the real wood. I thought about piecing in veneer on the Philco I worked on, but with the huge hole in the top, & a lot of it missing on the edges I thought it would look patched up. I'm with you on keeping as much original as possible. I never refinish antiques, I just clean and renew the original finish if possible.
@maynardcat, I sometimes see a very nicely refinished vintage radio on ebay. The finish is smooth and flawless...but the chassis looks like it just came out of 5-years in a chicken coop, horrible-looking. I always try to find that happy medium between the two. Hopefully, it'll be achieved when this project is finished. We'll see. Thanks again for popping in. Regards, John
@THOMMGB, Tom, For me an antique radio's character is something caused by our ancestors. Thus it should be maintained. Other of course feel differently. I'm glad you as I do. Thanks for you input. It's always welcome. Regards, John
@RedDodge1968, Right you are...trying to fit the veneer patches can be a pain where a pill won't reach, but one has to try. I figure just about anything will look better than what I started with. We'll just have to see how it all looks in the end. I've never had any added veneer come back off once it's been glued in place. Maybe I've just been lucky. But then I haven't had to do it very much. Regards, John
@ncautoman57, I'm aware that some of my ideas seem outdated, outmoded, whatever. But it's good to hear that at least some folks do agree with me. I thank you very much. Regards, John
@DrOlds100, How right you are. This one is my radio. It'll be played only by me, so exactly perfect isn't in the cards, although I do want it to look presentable. So like you, I also can't wait for the next video. Thanks for hanging with me. Regards, John
@Davidjb37721, Thank you, David, but it's not done yet. Experience has taught me that if anything bad could happen...it probably will. :-) Regards, John
Hello there. The veneer I use is scrap I've collected over the years from a variety of sources...even off doors folks have thrown away. To keep costs down in this hobby one has to always be on the lookout for those "goodie items" others throw away. But if you don't mind paying for veneer then eBay is a great source. Or just Google "veneer for sale". Numerous sellers will pop up. . Regards, John
Your patch work is looking good, getting those pieces to fit just right I bet is a very time consuming process. Have you ever had problems with them coming back off? Keep up the good work, really enjoy your video's.
@umajunkcollector, You know...I never thought of bondo. Maybe a few globs of Black Magic strategically slathered here and there wouldn't even be noticed. But Duck Tape is out of the question. It's not as good as it used to be. In fact, when I flew to Vegas a while back I could readily see that it was barely holding one of the engines to the wing. Regards, John
Thanks John, Good as usual. I like where you point out what needs to be fixed and the character that needs to stay. Tom
