It sucks because the old fnaf games do jumpscares better than any other game ive played, but then everyone took just the jumpscares and ran with them making fan games, films, etc., like reading an entire book and thinking it was entirely about one sentence.

The type of horror i like the most is when the game is not trying to be horror in the first place. A really good example is Pacific drive, more of a chill and atmospheric game with no real enemies or monsters. The first time playing it i was constantly on edge because you are entirely alone, the nights are pitch black and the occasional rustle of leaves or birds flying away makes you question if there's anything lurking in the bushes that might just jump out the next moment. Even knowing there isn't anything, you cant help but wonder and feel watched because of the eerie atmosphere. Great game btw, 10/10

I hate jump scares because they are just lazy. It’s why I never liked FNAF. Horror should be something that makes you feel something. It’s why I love games like Amnesia, Dead Space and Silent Hill so much. Silent Hill messes with your head using sound. The dread inducing ambience is terrifying because it is constantly breathing down your neck rather than screaming in your face

Eh, fnaf I feel like is the exception because the fact that the games are all about building tension and anxiety and maybe getting the relief of a jumpscare. Otherwise I like your video :)

Using SOMA as an example of "no jump scares" is hilarious. While it does not rely entirely on them, they are most certainly still in the game. Every death animation when the monster gets you IS a jump scare. Every time Johan Ross appears, especially at midsection of Omicron IS a jump scare.
Jump scares, while executed right (like you mentioned with Silent Hill) are a tool and they work. Jump scare is, or should be, more than just a loud noise and a monster closeup, it's about building tension and release of it.
I can recommend Spikima Movies' "David Lynch - How To Do A Jumpscare" as a study of what a good jump scare is.
Also, I really appreciate Silent Hill 2 Remake's "night sound" setting which made all sounds equal, even the jump scares.
