Ps1 horror games hooked me, now horror games are my favorite to play. I'll never forget the first time playing Resident Evil on my ps1. I rented it from a video shop without knowing anything about it. I still replay it every couple of years.
Funny you mentioned that considering I did the same thing but with emulation. When I was looking up older retro games from the 6th, 5th, and 4th generation video game consoles to see what kind of horror games were released on what platform, Overblood and Resident Evil were on the PS1, and I tried out Resident Evil 1 for the first time in my life. Needless to say, I would pretty much die nearly 30 to 40 times before I put it down and put it on hiatus until school was pretty much done with and thanks to a walkthrough, I would later realize the game wasn't just a survival horror, but a puzzle game as well (which is something I wasn't used to playing video games like those back in the day). Nowadays, thanks to the first three resident evil PS1 games, I got used to trying and figuring out how to do some puzzles and such, but I will never attempt any horror game that would have me stuck on a certain level and such.
Another really good one is Koudelka. Its the precursor to Shadow Hearts, but with Koudelka as far as horror goes it manages to do it great with its eldritch vibe and gothic horror while also having JRPG like encounters.
Koudelka is such an underrated gem of a game! I put in a hopeless bid for a like-new copy on ebay from a seller who clearly didn't know the value of the game in such good condition because he had put the starting bid so low. Dude probably freaked out when he checked on it later and saw it was closing in on $1000 lol
NGL part of the reason I keep my Vita in good working order is because I have the "Playstation One Classics" version of them saved to it. Not as good as playing on a full-size TV, of course, but I'm happy to still have them in whatever way I can!
BRAVO!! Fantastic video, my friend. Honestly, when I was around 4 or 5 years old, Nightmare Creatures was my first horror game around the time it came out. Clock Tower on ps1 was the first game that ever instilled a sense of fear in me, that first person shot when you’re in the elevator, seeing scissor man walking toward you was absolutely dread inducing.
I have to disagree about Clock Tower (the western version) as a kid growing up in the golden age of survival horror Clock Tower is certainly a classic in my eyes, amazing game that they should absolutely remake…
Finally I've been looking for this game! I remember this in my childhood yet couldn't remember the name. Thanks for the video, definitely going to get hold of a copy. 🎉🎉🎉

I was starting to think it might not even be real!
Hey, I really enjoyed this. Some friendly feedback: I sometimes have a hard time making out what you're saying. I'm not entirely sure what the cause is, but I have a few suggestions you may want to try. First, I think your mic track might need some of the bass EQed out (not sure if this is from your voice or your mic). Second, I think you have an ever so slight mumble. And third, it sounds a little like you're reading off a script vs talking to the viewer, causing unnatural intonation. Or it could be none of those things. Just trying to help 👍
The "Germs" game looks like it could be a brilliant piece of liminal horror, if they change it from mutants to some sort of paranormal event which traps people in an endless, grey city, with people few and far between. There's promise there.

OMFG nightmare creatures!! Ive been trying to remember the name of and find that game for like 15 years! I literally clicked on this video hoping it would be on here and its the first game mentioned😂
Also, I can't believe you didn't put "Dino Crisis" in this! That was an awesome game and terrifying with jump scares and super suspenseful that kept the poop edging out of your pants! It came out a little while after Resident Evil and took after RE in many ways. Plus you also need RE 2 in this list. That was probably one of the best PS1 games ever made
Great video! I hope things improve for you soon, it’s unfortunately very relatable. I’m adding my popular opinion… Clock Tower (2) The Struggle Within was actually a really genius game, but unfortunately it doesn’t get very much love because of its difficulty. I don’t really blame anyone for hating on it, it’s all over the place however it was a unique title in a sea of RE ripoffs during that timeframe. The game itself was a puzzle and it was incredible for that era.

Holy crap dude that original Playstation boot up sounds and screens just took me back and Nightmare Creatures right after! Bravo, Bravo 👏... I used to stay up late playing all these games. Resident evil being the best. I was in 3rd-5th grade playing these alone or with a cousin or 2, all lights off, on a pallet under my top bunk bed. There was no bottom bed because on 1 side was a desk and the other was where my 13 inch color tv with a video tape player sat on, with 3 drawers under it. Only some will know exactly what I mean by that haha. When tines were actually GOOD.
I remember practically everyone I knew who had a PS1 being aware of Nightmare Creatures. My friends and I used to play it all of the time. D was one I didn't have that hard of a time with and loved back then for how unique it was along with he gruesome nature. Germs has an English translation. Also, you missed Mizzurna Falls.
Ahh, Fear Effect. I was working Customer Service when someone called me to cancel their subscription to a popular gaming magazine because the ad for Fear Effect 2 was too explicit for his kids. He made it sound a breath away from pornographic. When I finally got a look at said ad I swiftly realized how out of pocket some Conservatives can get at even the slightest whiff of sexuality. If you're curious look up Fear Effect 2 advert. "These two ladies..." with a yellow background, that's what set him off. Yes, it's sexual, but not clutching your pearls sexual. At least not to me. That said it was an interesting little game. I keep forgetting it's technically a horror game because it didn't really have the slow sense of dread I associate with horror. But it definitely has its own style and its worth trying out. It's like...taking control of the protag in a shonen monster anime.
I looked up the ad (for research purposes.) The one with two women in relatively skimpy underwear? They're holding guns with their arms around each other. One girl's hand is resting on the other girl's butt. With no more context, if a parent didn't want their kid to see that, it sounds like they were just trying to be responsible for what their child was exposed to. Totally understandable decision to cancel their subscription if they couldn't be sure that even more sexualized stuff was going to be advertised to their kid.

Great video. Some of these games were great and find some of them were scarier than modern horrors. Just to let you know though, you were pronouncing Iru incorrectly.
Does Soul Reaver count as a PS1 Horror Game? I meant it’s got vampires, zombies, insects, people suffering and dying, a world in ruins and the opening scene of the main character getting his wings ripped off and thrown into a lake of water which is basically acid to vampire. And don’t forget the main character being a zombie with no lower jaw.
Theres a game called "Injection Pi 23" theres 2 games in the series so far. Anyone into old school horror i would highly recomend check it out. Feels entirely old school, not like a new take on old concepts.
There's also no English walkthrough out there, nit for the second game anyway. Only a German and a Spanish stream, neither of which show all the puzzle solutions. No answers on the internet. It's like gaming in 2000 again
I played clock tower 3(ghost head) shortly after it came out, riding on the back of the series. I finished it in about 3 hours and was extremely disappointed. I guess having just come off silent hill and resident evil, the lack of anything scarring made me want more.

It's like gaming in 2000 again
an english fan translation for Germs was released a bit ago
I remember playing Clock Tower 2, is first fear a remake of the SNES version?
I played clock tower 3(ghost head) shortly after it came out, riding on the back of the series. I finished it in about 3 hours and was extremely disappointed.
I guess having just come off silent hill and resident evil, the lack of anything scarring made me want more.
Y'all hear me out. Play "Casper" for the PS1. Lowkey was my first survival horror game😂am i wrong??
