Ps1 horror games hooked me, now horror games are my favorite to play. I'll never forget the first time playing Resident Evil on my ps1. I rented it from a video shop without knowing anything about it. I still replay it every couple of years.
Funny you mentioned that considering I did the same thing but with emulation. When I was looking up older retro games from the 6th, 5th, and 4th generation video game consoles to see what kind of horror games were released on what platform, Overblood and Resident Evil were on the PS1, and I tried out Resident Evil 1 for the first time in my life. Needless to say, I would pretty much die nearly 30 to 40 times before I put it down and put it on hiatus until school was pretty much done with and thanks to a walkthrough, I would later realize the game wasn't just a survival horror, but a puzzle game as well (which is something I wasn't used to playing video games like those back in the day). Nowadays, thanks to the first three resident evil PS1 games, I got used to trying and figuring out how to do some puzzles and such, but I will never attempt any horror game that would have me stuck on a certain level and such.
Same! I loved going to videostore and rent PS1 games Resident evil was epic Silent hill was also a bomb. I payed for extra renting days until i finaly beat it. The piano puzzle got me stuck for days, on an era with no internet and inmediate answers to everyrhing
silent hill literally dumped all over that game's chest. so much better! resident evil wasnt scary and only relied on cheap jump scares like Jason in a cabin the friday the 13th nes game.
Another really good one is Koudelka. Its the precursor to Shadow Hearts, but with Koudelka as far as horror goes it manages to do it great with its eldritch vibe and gothic horror while also having JRPG like encounters.
Koudelka is such an underrated gem of a game! I put in a hopeless bid for a like-new copy on ebay from a seller who clearly didn't know the value of the game in such good condition because he had put the starting bid so low. Dude probably freaked out when he checked on it later and saw it was closing in on $1000 lol

When the scene were the old man just kills himslef with a shotgun my mother was in the room, and she looked me with a face that said "i didnt' know videogames could do that, should i start worrying". BRAVO!! Fantastic video, my friend. Honestly, when I was around 4 or 5 years old, Nightmare Creatures was my first horror game around the time it came out. I played it before Resident Evil, Silent Hill (bar none my favorite form of media) but I played NC before anything else. I salute you Sir for mentioning its greatness.
D sounded so good on paper and artwork and the fact it was on NINE discs was awesome, but then videos showed how horribly bad it truly was. it was always on sale when games didn't go on sale. that was the reason!
NGL part of the reason I keep my Vita in good working order is because I have the "Playstation One Classics" version of them saved to it. Not as good as playing on a full-size TV, of course, but I'm happy to still have them in whatever way I can!

Clock Tower on ps1 was the first game that ever instilled a sense of fear in me, that first person shot when you’re in the elevator, seeing scissor man walking toward you was absolutely dread inducing.

I adored nightmare creatures 2 and the ps1 alone in the dark, I had these chipped along with Tekken 3 and they completely shaped who i am as nuts as that sounds, the darkness of the horror got me into movies and more horror games like silent hill and re4 Tekken flamed my love of anime

One of the best PS1 horror games I've ever played: Echo Night. A puzzle exploration FPS from FromSoftWare, renowned for its mastery of atmosphere and environmental storytelling. A rather casual and short title, but with impressive graphics and interactivity for the PS1. You sail around on a ghost ship, in a melancholy atmosphere and in various “pocket dimensions”-/memories. Somewhere between Shenmue and Alien Isolation in terms of gameplay. Its second opus, for PS2, is said to take place on the Moon.

I don’t really blame anyone for hating on it, it’s all over the place however it was a unique title in a sea of RE ripoffs during that timeframe. The game itself was a puzzle and it was incredible for that era.

Hey, I really enjoyed this. Some friendly feedback: I sometimes have a hard time making out what you're saying. I'm not entirely sure what the cause is, but I have a few suggestions you may want to try. First, I think your mic track might need some of the bass EQed out (not sure if this is from your voice or your mic). Second, I think you have an ever so slight mumble. And third, it sounds a little like you're reading off a script vs talking to the viewer, causing unnatural intonation. Or it could be none of those things. Just trying to help 👍
I imagine that there's no way I'd have the patience to play through D these days. Even though the slow moving pace kind of added to the uneasy feeling I remember when playing it as a kid, I think my attention span circuits have sadly been fried since then.

I swear there was a ps1 game that I played where you start in space fighting but I remember the protagonist had a baby blue colored suit and yellow helmet. You could die and the game would show it in the creepiest cutscenes and to this day I can't remember what it was.

I remember practically everyone I knew who had a PS1 being aware of Nightmare Creatures. My friends and I used to play it all of the time. D was one I didn't have that hard of a time with and loved back then for how unique it was along with he gruesome nature. Germs has an English translation. Also, you missed Mizzurna Falls.
Also, I can't believe you didn't put "Dino Crisis" in this! That was an awesome game and terrifying with jump scares and super suspenseful that kept the poop edging out of your pants! It came out a little while after Resident Evil and took after RE in many ways. Plus you also need RE 2 in this list. That was probably one of the best PS1 games ever made
Holy crap dude that original Playstation boot up sounds and screens just took me back and Nightmare Creatures right after! Bravo, Bravo 👏... I used to stay up late playing all these games. Resident evil being the best. I was in 3rd-5th grade playing these alone or with a cousin or 2, all lights off, on a pallet under my top bunk bed. There was no bottom bed because on 1 side was a desk and the other was where my 13 inch color tv with a video tape player sat on, with 3 drawers under it. Only some will know exactly what I mean by that haha. When tines were actually GOOD.
nightmare creatures? no, silent hill's near darkness and non-dayglo character sprites ruined us by having GOOD horror. clock tower (US part 1) sucks, it's one of those boring/confusing point and click games if you dont do it right, you save a death end where it just kills you over and over and you cant do anything about it. it had a sense of dread but wayyyy overrated.

My roomie and I have been unpacking after moving recently and actually found an original copy of D in a cd case, full of old video games! We don’t have the actual case for it, but it has the booklet and everything, now I just need to get a backwards compatible PS3 and cross my fingers that it will work!
One of my first games for the ps1 was nightmare creatures in 1997, i was 3, i still have my copy 0:33 , the Miyazakis Soul franchise is also one of my favorites, i started with demon souls when that came out lmao

D was one I didn't have that hard of a time with and loved back then for how unique it was along with he gruesome nature. Germs has an English translation. Also, you missed Mizzurna Falls.
Also, I can't believe you didn't put "Dino Crisis" in this! That was an awesome game and terrifying with jump scares and super suspenseful that kept the poop edging out of your pants! It came out a little while after Resident Evil and took after RE in many ways. Plus you also need RE 2 in this list. That was probably one of the best PS1 games ever made
Holy crap dude that original Playstation boot up sounds and screens just took me back and Nightmare Creatures right after! Bravo, Bravo 👏... I used to stay up late playing all these games. Resident evil being the best. I was in 3rd-5th grade playing these alone or with a cousin or 2, all lights off, on a pallet under my top bunk bed. There was no bottom bed because on 1 side was a desk and the other was where my 13 inch color tv with a video tape player sat on, with 3 drawers under it. Only some will know exactly what I mean by that haha. When tines were actually GOOD.

nightmare creatures? no, silent hill's near darkness and non-dayglo character sprites ruined us by having GOOD horror. clock tower (US part 1) sucks, it's one of those boring/confusing point and click games if you dont do it right, you save a death end where it just kills you over and over and you cant do anything about it. it had a sense of dread but wayyyy overrated.
If you made list videos for all kinds of horror related media/games, or even non-horror stuff, I'd watch them all.
Just some language context for Iru, "I" in Japanese is always pronounced as "ee". Also, "iru" means "to be", specifically relating to living creatures. "Aru" also means "to be" but refers to inanimate objects

My roomie and I have been unpacking after moving recently and actually found an original copy of D in a cd case, full of old video games! We don’t have the actual case for it, but it has the booklet and everything, now I just need to get a backwards compatible PS3 and cross my fingers that it will work!

One of my first games for the ps1 was nightmare creatures in 1997, i was 3, i still have my copy 0:33 , the Miyazakis Soul franchise is also one of my favorites, i started with demon souls when that came out lmao
Nightmare Creatures is the goat. The thing i liked about the n64 port is the monster brawl in the opening
there was a weird game that came on a demo disc. i saw my mom playing it but its only a blip in my memory. i just remember you are in a dark cave on really thin paths and cyan glowing crystals on the ground. ill never know what game it is.
For me Hellnight is one of my favorite horror games on the psx.
