Here's some info on Martian Gothic, the writer/designer Stephen Marley wasn't happy at all with the final product, admitting there were too many gameplay problems, it was rushed, there are numerous game breaking bugs in the PC version, etc... He conceived the game years earlier as a sci-fi horror novel about a haunted house on Mars, but eventually abandoned it. However, his idea was reignited when he played the original Resident Evil, and thought the game's explanation as to why Chris and co. couldn't just go outside the mansion was pretty contrived and then he remembered his haunted house on Mars idea and tried to turn it into a game. Problem was Creative Reality had no experience at all in this kind of game, being veterans of the Amiga and Commodore, the crew was very small and unexperienced with 3D, which led to a lot of creative problems in development, like the zombies weren't supposed to come in until towards the end, and ghosts were supposed to be the main enemy but because the animation for the ghosts looked quite poor and they had trouble implementing them, the zombies became the main enemy and this is also a reason why the zombies don't stay dead in the game. He also said that the Mars base was originally supposed to look more like a Gothic mansion or normal building in space to break away from the industrial aesthetic that the Alien movies had made so popular in Sci-Fi horror, but admits that a lot of the game just looks like an Alien set anyway. He also said in an interview that he believes that the Dead Space franchise took some inspiration from Martian Gothic, but he personally felt that DS was too depressing and bleak for his taste, which was something he was worried about with Martian Gothic, so he had a campy spoof radio play as a bonus in the game.

I still love how the director for _Martian Gothic_ claimed that the Japanese guy was canonically "Zen" to explain away how he sounds like they just grabbed the guy who delivered their sandwiches and forced him to read lines. The director maintains this was deliberate, even though the character's dull, flat, monotonous delivery adds absolutely _nothing_ to the plot and just comes off as an excuse to save face for an actor's terrible performance.
I remember Overblood being the last game ever played (canonically) by my favorite lets play RUclipsr Retsupurae. Of all in this list, The Note and Hellknight is the most interesting for me due to its mechanic nature. Great compilation video!

The scariest PS1 game for me was intelligent qube, the demo version. The release version has music and more stuff to do, but the demo version is so unbelievably unnerving. No music, the sounds are loud and echo around you and the sound of the cubes slowly going towards you without anything else but your audiable steps is horrifying. It just proves that if you remove the music in a game that is already quite unsetteling it amplifies the games creepiness. It may sound like a joke, but look up videos on the demo version. It gave my childhood self ptsd from playing that said version again.
I don't know about the scariest, but I get what you mean. The slamming of the cubes as they come towards you. Slow at first but faster....faster....faster...thunderous steps.
It was called kurushi in the UK. Yeah I had it on a demo disc when I first got my PS1. It was very unnerving but a great game. The whole thing felt like a fever dream

Martian Gothic was awesome and underated. It had a creepy atmosphere. I would love to see a remastered or even remake of that game but I know it's never going to happen.
Once I saw Martian Gothic, I got excited! I haven’t beaten it but I’ve played a big chunk of it and it was quite fun. A very puzzle oriented game w/ some early ps1 spooky graphics. Some of the main mechanics like the vents were a bit janky and hard to figure out at first but once you kinda know what to do you can solve puzzles and all.
Great video! I've played most of these and I think your takes are spot on. Chaos Break: This was kind of a "sequel" to an arcade game called "Chaos Heat", although the gameplay is quite different. But still, that may explain the more action-oriented feel that you mentioned. One more difference between Rick and Mitsuki is that while Rick's weapon always has he same rate of fire with each shot doing the same amount of damage, Mitsuki's guns start off slow and speed up as you hold the fire button, and the power of each shot increases as well. This can become important toward the end of the game when your ammo is running low and you've already picked up all the refills. Overblood: There's also an "Overblood 2", but as far as I've played it, it has nothing to do with the original aside from the name. The Note: I played this back in the day but I hardly remember anything about it, lol. I don't think I hated it, though. Fear Effect: I haven't really played them, but this series was a major property in Europe and Oceania, so it's weird for me to hear it called "forgotten". Hellnight: This is super tense with a weird background/story. I only played through once, keeping Naomi safe until the end, but maybe one day I'll play again and try to see some other endings. Virus: I didn't even know this existed until last year. And it looked... not good, as you indicate. Martin Gothic: Looks great, but the writing and acting are so bad and the puzzles so frustrating that I gave up after only an hour or two. I did read a walkthrough back then, and from what I remember it looks like you got much further than I did. On PS2, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on "Echo Night: Beyond". It's not the greatest game but it's still one of my favourites. You might need a real PS2 to play it though, because the last time I tried to emulate it, most of the walls didn't draw properly (something to do with how the game draws shiny metal walls, I think).
You forgot to add Galerians, but over all this is an amazing list. Dead Effect, and Martin Gothic were some of the most amazing games I have ever played even though they were in most peoples eyes considered garbage. All 3 of these games have a thrill and intense game play. Much of this is due to the chaos created by lack of essential information but that the fun part. Its like dating someone who is always upset and never tells you why but you by some magical intervention you say/do the right things leading to progress in the relationship. If you are a enjoy raging you will love these games. They have depth, and an amazing story's. Give them a try if you have a boring week going on.
Awesome list. Interesting that you picked Fear Effect. Perhaps it didn’t do well globally but I remember this coming out in the UK and over here it was definitely a hit. It received outstanding reviews and was given lots of hype through TV and magazine adverts. I think over here it’s definitely well remembered. Still have my original copy.
Great list! I was in college in the heyday of the Playstation 1, so I remember all of these titles well. One thing I'd recommend(although I know it's a subjective preference thing) is to play them at native pixel resolution w/integer scaling to 4k and no bilinear filters if using something like DuckStation for a closer experience to how it looked at the time. There's better cohesion with the pixels that make up the 2d textures blending with the pixels that would normally appear on the edges of the polygons at native res(upscaling removes them from the polygons). On characters especially, they were constructed with native res in mind which is why they can look weird and flat upscaled.
Its cool going down these PS1 horror lists, I grew up with N64 and Nintendo products as a child and never had a chance to experience most of these games.
The most memorable thing about Overblood to me - Peepo's tragic death aside - was it's super-wonky collision detection that would continuously put the player character in his "push" state, even if there was nothing to push. It was hilarious.
Thank you this vid unlocked a core memory. When i was younger i ordered out of a back of egm from funcoland what i thought was resident evil but instead received OVERBLOOD. Thank you, I have been looking for the name of the first game Chaos Break since a long time, I remember seeing it as a kid on Some Gaming channel back in 2000/2001 and never got its game
For a person who played Hellnight over and over. Got all endings. I must say it is the first game to implement real atmospheric horror. No jump scares. Just creepy people, in a creepy place. Then comes the creepy monster. I would like to add that running is not just the option. Your companions, other than Naomi, can shoot the monster. Kamiya, Rene, and that Russian soldier have weapons. The game have 5 different endings and amazing background 3 to 4 tunes music in each level. The monster evolves and get faster and smarter with your progress in the game. And it gets REALLY weird at the end. It deserves a remake if it will retain the creepiness.
You unlocked a core memory - or unrepressed trauma. Martian Gothic was one of those games I started playing by myself when I was a kid thinking it would be something peaceful and fun… Needless to say.. I was wrong
cold fear- by far the scariest game i played as a kid and it was rightfully in that spot. the aura and energy it gave off was traumatizing as a kid. the whale part mainly
Hellnight! That game is so eerie., mysterious, and full of jumpscare. Map is too damn dark too. I'm amaze I played that game when I was around like 11 years old.
If there is ever a list for forgotten Ps2 horror games, my vote would be for the game 'Extermination'. I never owned it myself, but I remember playing the beginning portions of the demo when I was little (I was an easily frightened child lmao) on one of those JamPack Demo disks we had lying around.
Something worth noting about Fear Effect, outside of it being not-quite-forgotten, is that it's had two sequels (Fear Effect 2 and Fear Effect: Sedna) as well as the upcoming remake Fear Effect: Reinvented. However, in spite of more optimistic messages from the dev team, the latter appears to be stuck in development hell - kind of ironic to say especially given a particular plot point of the game - and has long shot past its expected releease date which, if I'm not mistaken, should have been maybe a year or so after Sedna came out. In any case. it may be worth considering doing a video on just the history of this game if you are interested.
So as one of the few people who would consider themselves a "Virus fan" (story's a bit naff but dear god the monsters), there's a few things to clear up here. Obviously, I don't blame you if you don't know this stuff - to say that this is obscure is an understatement. * Virus, the 1999 film, is actually an American film distributed by Universal Pictures. It was directed by John Bruno, who was a longtime veteran of the film effects scene and has a pretty impressive career as a VFX guy. He won an Academy Award for his work on The Abyss and worked on other major effects films like Terminator 2 and Titanic. Virus was his one and only feature film where he was in the director's seat. It was a commercial and critical failure, so it's understandable why he didn't get another go at it. You might be getting it mixed up with a French short film made in 2018 called Virus. * The creature in the movie is actually a kind of alien life form, it's never really specifically described as anything other than an energy being ("living lightning" as the film calls it). It invades computer systems and uses the information stored within to learn about humanity, decides we need to be collectively exterminated as it categorizes us as a Virus (hence the title), and proceeds to do so by turning the robotics workshop of a Russian communications and space monitoring vessel into a horror factory where it stitches together human corpses and combines them with robotics technology. Essentially think the Necromorphs from Dead Space combined with the Strogg of Quake. * Virus, the 1992 comic, was actually hugely successful. It sold around 400,000 copies, which considering it was a four-issue limited non-franchise connected run is damned impressive. It's mostly forgotten now along with a lot of other independent stuff from Dark Horse's horror library. It actually started off as a screenplay which was rejected by Universal Pictures, but was later picked up by them after the success of the comic. Apparently, one of the reasons why it was rejected in the first place was because the studio was convinced that the effects wouldn't be possible. * Virus: It's Aware, does not take place on a space station. It actually takes place in, of all things, a hotel (called the Nakomi Plaza...three guesses where they got that idea from) before transitioning to a dock area and a ship where "The Evil" (a title it never got in the movie) is inhabiting, akin to the ship in the film. The only part that takes place in space is the ending FMV, which seems to be setting up a sequel (ambitious!). I don't blame you though, as between the horrible writing and what appears to be an awful attempt at translation, the plot, such as it is, is an incoherent mess.
I remember playing Chaos Break when I was younger, probably from a demo disk. One game that doesn't get enough coverage is Dino Crisis. The first game was actually quite scary, but the next two installments focused less on horror. Still liked them, though.
I've just been letting youtube autoplay your videos for the past few days, and with the quality of video put out I genuinely just assumed you'd have 10's-100's of thousands of subs so seeing 3k was shocking to me lmao

The version of Overblood I played has a different named character. I wonder if there are different versions. I played the American version. Raz Karcy was the protagonist’s name in my version. Love your video. Thanks for posting.
I remember playing Overblood in ~1997, when I was little child, right after the Resident Evil. I thought that main character is Barry Burton :D I also couldn't get out of the first room.
hellnight omfg i cant believe it i love this game since 23 years i played it at a very young age and got so obsessed with it and i still play it today from time to time fooling around teasing the hybrid (dark messiah) .hellnight was never forgotten at least from my site .it’s so sad this game is so underrated cuz i so badly wish for it to get a remake hence i would do it myself if i could it’s like my favorite baby .the hybrid also chance his appearance, sounds, speed and behavior over the game and also u can play with 5 different characters naomi is the only only one who can’t fight back to slow him down for a moment the other s have guns to shoot and make him kneel so u can escape.if u know how to u even can drop some characters without them dying so u could get them back or if u do a certain way u can even play as one of the hybrid s breed himself which is trying to defeat its master .with one character (which is actually my favorite)u even can get an bad ending to the game …phew sorry i could not hold back i love this game and could talk endless about it
Great video. Good delivery and style. Could I suggest not having tv borders on in future videos? I found it distracting. Black is better when there is extra space due to different aspect ratio.
I always remember Parasite Eve 2 bring a really good game. It was really unheard of in my neck of the woods with Resident Evil/ Dino Crisis bring the big hitters. Fear Effect was awesome I played that when first out and it really was like playing a next level game. They really pushed the system with that one.
The only one I owned is Fear Effect. Wish they'd rerelease it and its sequel. Not sure if the remake was cancelled or not. Not really horror, but I'd recommend checking out: Covert Ops Nuclear Dawn/Chase The Express and In Cold Blood for PS1 too.
On regards of the remake, it has been quietly cancelled. Forever Entertainment removed it's channel in it's discord. Their community manager confirmed it on there that it was cancelled on there. They can't make any more comment other that and that no other plans on working on the IP at the moment.
Chaos Break is one of my favorites, Countdown Vampires is also a pretty good clone of RE 1 You missed TRAG and Countdown Vampires, Echo Night is also a good one
Fear Effect is very well known and was very popular when it came out back when. The newest game released now failed miserably but wouldnt have been made had Fear Effect been so "obscure"

You unlocked a core memory - or unrepressed trauma. Martian Gothic was one of those games I started playing by myself when I was a kid thinking it would be something peaceful and fun… Needless to say.. I was wrong
"What is that, a disease? I hope its not contagious" Proceeds to sniff his fingers. 11:47
i finished both Fear Effect games back then. loved them. there is also an horror series called Temco's Deception wich was fantastic
Really glad to see Overblood on this list. IMO an underrated gem of the PSX.
i remember buying Fear Effect when it first came out. When I tell you my mind was BLOWN would be an understatement
Great to see someone else who found The Note, but it shouldn't be that dark. I'd recommend looking into your settings.
The "What is that? Disease? Hope it's not contagious" dialogue sounds straight out of a Tim & Eric sketch or something
a really weird horror game i don't see a lot of people if anybody talk about is Steel Harbringer on the ps1. That scared me as a kid.
Awesome video I subbed with notis on 🔥🥇
Fear effect when i started i have problem with this game but after a time it made so fun
You deserve more subs, keep it up🎉
cold fear- by far the scariest game i played as a kid and it was rightfully in that spot. the aura and energy it gave off was traumatizing as a kid. the whale part mainly
Alone in the Dark 4 sounds and music are the best one in terms of scary/jumpscares
Hellnight! That game is so eerie., mysterious, and full of jumpscare. Map is too damn dark too. I'm amaze I played that game when I was around like 11 years old.
Bruh scourge by yakui the maid as the intro and ps1 horror, sick
I was gonna mention that too, so sick!!!
If there is ever a list for forgotten Ps2 horror games, my vote would be for the game 'Extermination'. I never owned it myself, but I remember playing the beginning portions of the demo when I was little (I was an easily frightened child lmao) on one of those JamPack Demo disks we had lying around.
I never got to play the PS1, so this is such an awesome way to experience some of it by proxy
It’s not in development hell, it was straight up canceled.
@@bjchit Wait, what about them coming out sometime back (after the rumours started) and claiming it wasn't cancelled?
They confirmed it last September.
@@bjchit Damn. Well, it was a fun idea while it lasted - here's hoping another dev team can do what these guys couldn't.
Start up of the ps one is unbelievable. So nostalgic.
Underrated channel, liking and subsequent sub.
Fear Effect was my stuff back in the day. SO trippy and 4 discs!
In Virus, if you hold it's either R1 or R2 with left or right, you can strafe left or right, making the game really easy.
You have just unlocked a memory in me from when I was like 6
So as one of the few people who would consider themselves a "Virus fan" (story's a bit naff but dear god the monsters), there's a few things to clear up here.
Overblood was one of the first games I ever rented for the PS1. It's definitely odd, but it's also got a compelling plot.
Overblood is AMAZING. We need a remake. Still own my disk.
Poor execution aside, the idea of a Virus survival horror is pretty interesting
I've just been letting youtube autoplay your videos for the past few days, and with the quality of video put out I genuinely just assumed you'd have 10's-100's of thousands of subs so seeing 3k was shocking to me lmao
Always appreciate contents about my favorite console in the recent years
If you wanna venture to the east side of the world - Japan, you will find more obscure horror PS1 games
That Chaos Break one looks like one I'd actually play as a kid had I known about it.
The version of Overblood I played has a different named character. I wonder if there are different versions. I played the American version. Raz Karcy was the protagonist’s name in my version. Love your video. Thanks for posting.
I remember playing Overblood in ~1997, when I was little child, right after the Resident Evil.
I thought that main character is Barry Burton :D
I also couldn't get out of the first room.
I played Fear effect when it came out. Such an underrated game
More games to add to my collection thanks🙏🏾🔥
I really enjoyed the X-FIles RE clone. It was janky and buggy but quite enjoyable for that old school vibe. Fear Effect was strange and memorable too.
Yay! Another fan 😊 I loved it too!!
hellnight omfg i cant believe it i love this game since 23 years i played it at a very young age and got so obsessed with it and i still play it today from time to time fooling around teasing the hybrid (dark messiah) .hellnight was never forgotten at least from my site .it’s so sad this game is so underrated cuz i so badly wish for it to get a remake hence i would do it myself if i could it’s like my favorite baby .the hybrid also chance his appearance, sounds, speed and behavior over the game and also u can play with 5 different characters naomi is the only only one who can’t fight back to slow him down for a moment the other s have guns to shoot and make him kneel so u can escape.if u know how to u even can drop some characters without them dying so u could get them back or if u do a certain way u can even play as one of the hybrid s breed himself which is trying to defeat its master .with one character (which is actually my favorite)u even can get an bad ending to the game …phew sorry i could not hold back i love this game and could talk endless about it
Virus is a bit of a meme in France, our "French AVGN", joueur du grenier, made a video on it years ago, it's pretty funny
also good vid btw
Fear Effect was popular for the time. I wish Overblood 2 had hit the United States..
Fear effect and fear effect 2 were in every magazine in the late 90s. It was by no means going "under the radar"
I’ve been looking for games to put on my emulator this was perfect
Chaos Break is one of my favorites, Countdown Vampires is also a pretty good clone of RE 1
You missed TRAG and Countdown Vampires, Echo Night is also a good one
For some reason i got both Hellnight and Martian Gothic when i was a kid and was both very confused and terrified while playing them.
Fear Effect is very well known and was very popular when it came out back when. The newest game released now failed miserably but wouldnt have been made had Fear Effect been so "obscure"
I love Martian Gothic Unification! I am trying to find a clean copy now. I never realized Fear Effect was a horror game. I honestly never looked into it much. Pretty silly of me given its name.. LOL
The ps1 intro is top tier, first place, platinum.
I played Fear Effect 2 when i was primary school 😂
This game unique for a ps1 game and it is action and horror genre, the clown boss freaks me out.
And I think some people forgot Galerians, this game and the mechanics are awesome. 👌
Using the word "forgotten" and using the RE2 cover in the thumbnail was VERY strategic. *slow clap*
Idk why you would ever tell someone to not try out a game. Experiencing obscure bad games for yourself is fun.
man i i feel i explored every corner with psone games , allways chasing the next resi or sh , brilliant era for re clones in cold blood fear effect and i rember suffering martian gothic the atmos in that game got me so far
