I didn't know Behaviour made Naughty Bear, that's kinda hilarious that's where the idea for DbD started. Also, still sad Evolve failed, that game was actually sick as hell when it first launched.
I always figured that Naughty Bear was a prototype for DbD, there’s even a multiplayer mode in the game that has one player playing as Naughty, and the three other players have to play as the normal bears.

While we call a lot of these projects failures from a creative standpoint, it’s actually really smart from a business standpoint (temporarily). The fact that they do focus testing early on in development means that if something doesnt test right, they won’t sink money into it. Many AA studios fall into the sunk cost fallacy trap, so they are actually learning. I just hope that they can achieve a similar success with a new IP. It seems at least, that the main reason for their struggle is quality control and resource management. Hopefully they get better at it!
I think Asymmetric Multiplayer is an amazing concept, but it seems like everyone wants to clone and not innovate. Like imagine 5 military vehicles trying to take down a very mobile kaiju, or a strategy game where it’s a small technology based civilization vs a huge but primitive alien foe. There is one other game thats like DbD and still going on. And that's Identity V (IDV). And before anyone says that they are a "ripoff" and such. Some thought this game would get sued (I guess because they think no other company can do this genre as well?) But here's the thing. Not only Behaviour Interactive knows about this game. They in fact helped them out on it. And another interesting thing. When Behaviour was to redo their mobile port (2nd attempt). They got Netease to help them back. While DbD relies mostly on horror icons, IDV has anime and other collaborations. Either way, BHVR has come a long way since then and ccan'twait to see what other things they might bring. (Fun fact: IDV had the 8v2 mode before DbD and I thought it was funny that they finally got around to it)
I think you missed some elements of the games plot for naughty bear The one reason why the other bears hate naughty is because they think he's just in the way of there perfect society and island and is why the other bears hate him and don't like him and even try to kill him several times This is all from Early demo and promotional material But sadly only some of this storyline made it in into the final game

I don't know if this is public knowledge but I worked at A2M, naughty bear wasn't suppose to be a cartoon bear style thing, originally the proof of concept was a dark and realistic art style where you played as this Jason-esk monster dude who had tentacles that came out of his face and you could mind control your victims to do crazy stuff and confuse other npcs, there was a lot of gore and I guess that's why it turned into naughty bear, a reskin of the same thing basically.
I remember seeing naughty bear on a commercial when it first came out as a kid and wanted it bad. And I actually enjoyed the game. Crazy to see how far they've come since then.

DUUUUDE I remember Deathgarden: Blood Harvest!! my friend and i really enjoyed that game, caught it on a deep discount and had a blast; We were both super sad when they announced the shut down :( The sharp falloff of players and hype for Frank Stone is pretty typical for this genre of game, people do one or two runs and then usually dont end up touching them again. That being said its peak still wasnt much either, seems like people outside of the DbD bubble either werent interested or didnt know it even existed Also great video! But after the 2010 I lost the track on them, at first I thought that they shutdown or something, it wasn't like years later I discovered that they just rebranded the company and just changed the name. 😂

I think it was due to difficulty, if you aren't accustomed to playing in that specific restrictions for story/gameplay advancement then "reviewers" will be put off by it. I myself never finished it, but i did have fun playing it. Skill issue is what i would say to those negative reviews. I still have my copy of the game and is still fun to play.
I'm pretty sure the only dead by daylight adjacent game that is still seeing success to this day is probably NetEase's Identity V. While it is more popular in Asian markets, it still has a fairly sizable player base in the west and is on its 8th Year of active support. Idv holds a special place in my heart and I'm kind of sad it wasn't brought up with the other asymmetrical games
I was 8 or 9 when Naughty Bear came out. I played a lot of games to compare it to and it felt different. like a sand boxy simpler GTA4 with a funnily misleading aesthetic. It was fun I finished it. When I started playing Dead By Daylight I noticed the Naughty Bear skin along side other huge IPs and was surprised that a really old commercially failed game managed to feature in DBD (But I appreciated it of course) so this makes sense now. I do find it weird that Naughty Bear got a similar treatment to Manhunt but I think critics main issue was that on the surface it aesthetically appealed to kids then had 'gory themes' that could brainwash kids into becoming psychopaths or something. But he has a Machete on the box art and the trailers afaik lifted the hood on what the game was really about so it shouldn't've been a surprise to any attentive parent. I think critics hated the torment till suicide mechanic especially though which is understandable.

I'm pretty sure the only dead by daylight adjacent game that is still seeing success to this day is probably NetEase's Identity V. While it is more popular in Asian markets, it still has a fairly sizable player base in the west and is on its 8th Year of active support.
Idv holds a special place in my heart and I'm kind of sad it wasn't brought up with the other asymmetrical games

I remember playing the demo back in 2012
I was 8 or 9 when Naughty Bear came out. I played a lot of games to compare it to and it felt different. like a sand boxy simpler GTA4 with a funnily misleading aesthetic. It was fun I finished it. When I started playing Dead By Daylight I noticed the Naughty Bear skin along side other huge IPs and was surprised that a really old commercially failed game managed to feature in DBD (But I appreciated it of course) so this makes sense now. I do find it weird that Naughty Bear got a similar treatment to Manhunt but I think critics main issue was that on the surface it aesthetically appealed to kids then had 'gory themes' that could brainwash kids into becoming psychopaths or something. But he has a Machete on the box art and the trailers afaik lifted the hood on what the game was really about so it shouldn't've been a surprise to any attentive parent. I think critics hated the torment till suicide mechanic especially though which is understandable.
I didn't realize how many people knew this game I thought it was one of those random Xbox games that only a handful of people knew

While Naughty Bear was a precursor to DBD in a way, would be awesome to see them add other characters from their original IPs. I think Jersey Devil is the only other one they own?? Fuck it, give us Taz as a killer. Bugs Bunny Time Busters needs more love. Lol

Infection Halo 2 was the first real Asym. also, we need a 4 hunter 1 survivor game. think about it. manhunt was a popular experince in minecraft for reasons like this.
