fear in the framework | how technical limitations shaped ps1 horror
inspired by a playthrough of the resident evil 1 remake, we talk a little bit about the history of the playstation's technical constraints that game developers had to overcome - realizing that what looks like a limitation may have actually been the secret to some of the most iconic ps1 horror games' success. we briefly go over the transition from cartridges to cds, loading screens, pre-rendered backgrounds, ps1 hardware specs, and take a moment to think about how all of these factors played into some of the best classic horror games.

loud noise = scary: why jump scares are the lowest form of horror
Просмотров 914Месяц назад
This week's video essay dives into the psychology of jump scares, why they’re the easy way out, and how many modern indie horror games have both embraced and subverted them. Jump scares definitely have their time and place depending on context - but as a whole, the formula of loud noise = scary has become tired. linktr.ee/dvmpstr
my favorite game is... looking at games

maybe our favorite “game” has become looking at games, but that doesn’t mean we can’t change the way we approach it! we live in a time when gaming has more choice than ever, but sometimes, the best experiences come from not overthinking and just diving in. at the end of the day, it’s about finding a balance between discovery and the real magic that happens when you hit “play.” linktr.ee/dvmpstr

"When the grind starts to overshadow the fun, it's time to step back." Me constantly running the Dorgesh-Kaan Agility course for weeks to get 99 Agility: *KILL ME NOW, PLEASE* I'm at 85 Agility in OSRS rn. It sucks, so much. Debatably worse than the Aerial Fishing Fish Sack grind, which I got after 88 hours of gameplay doing only that. I will say though that the sooner the overall grind is over, the sooner you can get to doing things you want to do, too. Just depends on the content you're aiming to do, I suppose. I will say, as an adult with much more limited time on my hands, it really sucks to aim for efficiency for account progress in these kinds of games, rather than fun. In my experience, efficiency most of the time, does not equal fun. It can, but it usually is not fun. Great video btw. :D

I hate jump scares because they are just lazy. It’s why I never liked FNAF. Horror should be something that makes you feel something. It’s why I love games like Amnesia, Dead Space and Silent Hill so much. Silent Hill messes with your head using sound. The dread inducing ambience is terrifying because it is constantly breathing down your neck rather than screaming in your face

The type of horror i like the most is when the game is not trying to be horror in the first place. A really good example is Pacific drive, more of a chill and atmospheric game with no real enemies or monsters. The first time playing it i was constantly on edge because you are entirely alone, the nights are pitch black and the occasional rustle of leaves or birds flying away makes you question if there's anything lurking in the bushes that might just jump out the next moment. Even knowing there isn't anything, you cant help but wonder and feel watched because of the eerie atmosphere. Great game btw, 10/10

Using SOMA as an example of "no jump scares" is hilarious. While it does not rely entirely on them, they are most certainly still in the game. Every death animation when the monster gets you IS a jump scare. Every time Johan Ross appears, especially at midsection of Omicron IS a jump scare. Jump scares, while executed right (like you mentioned with Silent Hill) are a tool and they work. Jump scare is, or should be, more than just a loud noise and a monster closeup, it's about building tension and release of it. I can recommend Spikima Movies' "David Lynch - How To Do A Jumpscare" as a study of what a good jump scare is. Also, I really appreciate Silent Hill 2 Remake's "night sound" setting which made all sounds equal, even the jump scares.

In my opinion: all horror that's happening inside a screen isn't "scary" per say Tension? I was expecting a scare A Jump Scary? Yeah that's what happens with real life, you get jumped, get pissed, get over it and then move on Even Alien Isolation, what's considered to be THE horror game isn't gonna stick with me in a way that makes me wanna stop progressing, it doesn't SCARE me

This really makes me think about my own experience. While I am a cheapskate and dont really hoard or keep buying games, I never really commit to new ones out of fear of me feeling like I could be playing something better. Due to this I have like 6000 hours into a comfort game of mine that isnt even worth playing for more then 20-50 to most people. I regret amassing such a huge time on it sometimes. Feeling like I could have spend that time more wisely, and experience so many more games. But I just don't. horror has more or less always been retro. gothic horror scared audiences in the 50s and 60s, 80s horror movies were recreations of 50s and 60s horror movies, the 00s-10s were all about neo-giallo, video nasties, and the 20s have been dominated by neo-slashers. Horror has always been a retroactive genre -- creeping into an attack and cracking open a dustbound photo album, looking at the forgotten images of people who died before your parents had met. 19th century gothic horror was focused on the decrepit chateaus and villas that dot the European landscape, memories of a crueler time and the degradation of long lost traditions...the stories of a grandparent that remembers the gallows that used to be set up in the town square. Horror's born in childhood confusion -- the first time that you're confronted with something that simply doesn't make sense. As popular culture and technology changes, it makes sense that popular horror changes with it. Stephen King was revolutionary because he pulled the old continent's goblins, ghouls, and demons out of dusty dungeons and dark forests, and brought them to the suburb, the shopping mall, the basement. The next generation of Stephen Kings places their demons in abandoned websites, lost smartphones, and old memory cards.

Great video! This whole subgenre always reminds me of an old tumblr post about an "evil fishing game" where people made up a fake game about fishing. Eventually the idea morphed into this slowburn horror game where the fish you ate slowly mutated you and you had to get to the cause of it, through exploring increasingly dangerous waters with things like boss monsters you took down by fishing (like the end of big's story in sonic adventure).

I dont rly get the story. Idk if it's rly possible to get the full picture, though. I think it's something like this. Whatever this organization is has discovered some kind of singularity, and that has manifested in the form of this place that plots your character existing at all times, future, past and present, or as the game says "Yesterday, today, and tomorrow". A part of the singularity, aside from the strange places you inhabit, is that before you started gambling on numbers, you found out that there's music eminating from this place that sounds like a spectrogram. In the spectrograms, you see images which in turn produce sounds (or maybe both the music and the images are one and the same, one log says that "everything we know about photons is about to change", so maybe light can carry sound here?). I think this music is entirely an auditory illusion housed in the listener's own brain, formed by and from their own memories, but when viewed as a spectrogram, something happens with the light that modifies how time behaves and it seems to create new memories or at least new images and sounds. You play as you set in the time: Today. You are running from the probability that time implodes on itself while you are trapped inside the singularity. This is represented by the watchers, which we learn are just versions of you from other times, so in the same way that you are trying to beat the chance that time imlodes, you are also trying to maintain today, this time. Why? I don't rly know. I think the voice logs we hear is your character from yesterday experiencing the slowing of time until it stops, and they say that it feels good, so maybe Today you is just trying to ride that feeling as long as they can. That's my theory. But ultimately, time catches up to you. You remember, which means you've heard all the music, which means you are progressing through time, which means, at some point, you become the you of tomorrow. The one who can escape the singularity, but to do that, you must let go of today, and the version of you trapped there. That's why you play as the hallway creature who can only be stopped by light. What does it mean for the Tomorrow you to be stopped by light? I think it's probably a butterfly effect thing. Maybe it's like you can't make contact with your Today self or else something disastrous happens, like the Tomorrow you is erased and the Today you remains (so you'd just have to start this journey all over again) or something worse. So you just wait until Today you can't see you, and since they can't see you, it's effectively like you are not emitting light into their eyes which could trigger a memory of you to them, which would be a memory of the future (seems like something that could break time itself, or at least your own mind.) So yeah. Time travel storyline where you or some other extrachronal entities make you remember stuff, but you gotta be careful not to remember tomorrow. Today was special.
