Family Ties Cast Then and Now
Set in suburban Columbus, Ohio, during the Reagan administration, Steven and Elyse Keaton (Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter) are baby boomers, liberals and former hippies, raising their three children: ambitious, would-be millionaire entrepreneur Alex (Michael J. Fox); fashion-conscious, gossipy Mallory (Justine Bateman); and tomboy Jennifer (Tina Yothers). Married in 1964, Elyse is an independent architect and Steven, a native of Buffalo, New York, is the station manager of WKS, a local public television station.
Much of the humor of the series focuses on the cultural divide during the 1980s when younger generations rejected the counterculture of the 1960s and embraced the materialism and conservative politics which came to define the 1980s. Alex, the oldest, is a "Young Republican" who embraces Reaganomics and exhibits conservative attitudes. Mallory is apolitical and a materialistic young woman in contrast to her feminist mother.[3] Mallory is also presented as a vacuous airhead, who is fodder for jokes and teasing from her brother. Jennifer, an athletic tomboy and the second youngest child, shares more of the values of her parents and just wants to be a normal kid. Steven and Elyse have a fourth child, Andrew (or "Andy", for short), who is born in early 1985. Alex dotes on his young brother and molds Andy in his conservative image.
Regarding the concept, show creator Goldberg observed, "It really was just an observation of what was going on in my own life with my own friends. We were these old kind of radical people and all of a sudden you're in the mainstream...but now you've got these kids and you've empowered them, and they're super intelligent, and they're definitely to the right of where you are. They don't understand what's wrong with having money and moving forward." A recurring theme involved Alex hatching a scheme involving some amount of greedy money-making, which led to a humorous misadventure and ended with Alex being forced to apologize for his choices. According to Goldberg, "We actually had this structure that we'd inherited from Jim Brooks and Allan [Burns], which was six scenes and a tag...And then the last scene became Alex apologizes, in every show, we just left it up. Alex apologizes. Some version of it." Nevertheless, Fox's portrayal of a likeable Alex proved to be an important part of the show's success. Goldberg again stated, "With Alex, I did not think I was creating a sympathetic character. Those were not traits that I aspired to and didn't want my kids to aspire to, actually...But at the end of Family Ties, when we went off the air, then The New York Times had done a piece and they said, 'Greed with the face of an angel.' And I think that's true...[Michael J. Fox] would make things work, and the audience would simply not access the darker side of what he's actually saying."

Justine Bateman can wake him up
I wish Michael J. Fox the very best. He continues to remain a talented, funny actor. stay well Michael
Why is the cover picture the little boy but then they don't show him in the video and what he is doing today
Because they clickbaited us. Downvote for that.
Looks like he was sent to prison for eating small children. 🤔
...because he's turned into a train wreck...
They chose a bad picture. Ive seen videos with him and he's doing ok
I googled it
He's fine
He left acting and lives in Colorado focusing on music
He was arrested (this pic is legit) for assault and battery for a fight in the EARLY 2000's so that was years ago. He's doing good now and thriving it would seem
this was one of my all time favorite shows growing up, I was a big Michael J fox fan still am
Me too.
Same here!! I even loved the theme song- oh the memories.
Me too! The music takes me back to my childhood. And im also crazy abt Micheal J Fox😁
Me too
He's my Boy! We're about the same age, and exactly the same height. And, we both love taller women. Plus , like him or not, I have the utmost respect for him for how he isn't letting his Parkinson's disease keep him from living it up. ( Respect to Tracy as well)
Seeing interviews with Justine and hearing how intelligent she is makes me appreciate her portrayal of Mallory even more.
This video is fantastic. So good to see everyone again. Family Ties was one of my favorite shows growing up. I still watch the reruns today.
Me too wish there could be some kind of reboot but knowing MJF wouldn’t be able to really take part in it I know it would never work
Fantastic actors across the board on this show, but I always felt it was the writers behind the scenes that really shined creating this absolutely iconic 80's sitcom. Intellectual, relevant, emotional, and hilarious all at the same time. Kudos to the actors for interpreting and delivering those lines in their own individual way.
thanks for the flash back to the 80s

Scott Valentine looks amazing!!
Yes he does. So does Meredith Baxter.
Agree
Ayyyyyyyyy!
He always did
Anyone else waiting for the mugshot eagerly?
Marc Price was so funny. Great comedian. No way the show would have been so popular without him as Skippy.
Good to know they are all still alive. Was a great show.
To the person reading this, You are just amazing, You can do anything! God bless you all! ❤️ 🌹
Thank You!
@@maureenmcgovern6119 no problem! I always right these to make someone’s day!
Does that apply if we have split personalities and are more than 1 person?
@@Marchant2 Yes
@@leahsworld692 thank you for your kindness. Stay sweet :)
Isn't it interesting that Meredith Baxter AND Michael Gross (who played the parents on the show) have the same birthday, both born on June 21st 1947 !?!?? That happens to be my birthday as well, except I was born in 1959. I used to watch that show all the time!!
IKR!
One of my favorites ❤ still to this day....Michael j. Fox....God Bless You.. Amen 🙏
YES!!! ☺️ SO.DO.I❣️❣️❣️
How time's flys like if the 80s where yesterday
My fave show as a kid😊👍
Wait the dad was only in his mid 30s in the show? Wow
Mom also .
Said the same thing...
no... if you look it says he was 30 in 1958.
@@marcussmith4913that was clearly a mistake
He was born 6/21/47, so yes, he was about 35 when the show began in 1982 and 42 or so when it ended in 1989. Merideth Baxter has the same birth date as him.
They’re all still alive today.
Cool, I always enjoyed watching this show :)
Who's your favorite from the cast, Michael?
@@FactsVerse Michael J. Fox :)
Always watch that show back in the 80s that was a good show back in the day👍👍👍✌✌
Did you guys know that Micheal J. Fox and Tracy Pollan are married in real life? What an awesome couple!
Yep, they've been together for over 30 years.
Yes, I knew. They are a cute couple.
No!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really?... Duh, Everyone knows that.
You forgot one person, the kid who played their son, Andrew/Andy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But all in all you did a great job otherwise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOVE that show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe you should have putt in a couple of extra exclamation marks to show us you really meant it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You forgot one person that was on the show as their young son Andrew/Andy. But all in all you did a good job!! LOVE that show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They didn't want to bring up his bad past, probably a nice thing to do for someone with not too good a future after the show.
I didn’t realize Michael J Fox was diagnosed so early. It didn’t really show for years.
I’m bttf 2 the self lacing shoes weren’t originally in the movie but they had to put them in because Michael j fox couldn’t tie his shoes because of his Parkinson’s
Loved family ties theme song Denise. Williams and. Johnny. Mathis The cast was amazing!🎬🎥📼📺 Brian. Bonsall was such a cutie pie!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you!!!!
I think Michael Gross' photo was taken in 1985 instead of 1958. Thanks for sharing, this was one of my favorite shows back in the day and I had a crush on Mallory.
The music is annoying in this video don't waste your time
Omg it's terrible. 🤢
and they can’t do basic math
I really enjoyed this show. Thank you
Thank you. For your. Kind message
Thank you for these bits of catch up t.v. I love them
Scott Valentine has aged beautifully.
We agree!
yes he has😍
He's HOT! Wow I was pleasantly surprised to see his picture.
Nobody compares to Betty White
loved it, thanks
I ask God to... make you happy, make you smile, guide you safely through every mile; grant you wealth, give you health, and most of all, give you care and love you well. HAVE A BLESSED DAY. AMEN.💕
God bless you too :) 🌹
Can't believe how much Marc Price looks like Sean Astin
Soo..actual TEENAGERS played teenage rolls!!! Lol.. that doesn't happen anymore lol
roles not rolls 🥸
Not all of them were back then. Both Fox and Valentine (Nick) were grown men playing teenagers...
40 years later and I still have a crush on Michael.
Fun stuff, thanks for sharing! Which episode of the show appealed to you the most?
love your videos but thumbs down on this one for the loud annoying music, better to completely remove it here ;)
Noted!
@@FactsVerse I LOVED the music and was wondering where you got it and what its called.
Christina Applegate. Married with Children made her debut at one of Mallory,s parties.
She was in the episode where Jennifer had her band, too.
+@@averythecoolcat Thank You! Very much. Christina was always a great dancer.
Thank you
This Channel is so inspiring
That even made me to start a New Channel regarding INTERESTING FACTS and TOP 10s 🥰
They didn’t show Andy, they forgot about him
They didn't forget Brian Bonsall, he was the one you saw when you clicked on the video. He didn't fair too well, and maybe they didn't want to bring up his bad past of multiple arrests and assault charges. Sad, but true.
i think the actor who played andy on family ties got into trouble with the law alot so they didn't want to bring up his record.
@@tigergreg8 I was told in a blog from people that knew him (they seriously wanted to beat my ass, at first, for bringing up his arrests) that he's overcome all of that.
He's in a rock band, has a family and is doing all right. He's just staying out of the Hollywood spotlight these days.
@@averythecoolcat At least he's trying to become a better person, that's great.
@@tigergreg8 Yeah, I totally agree. I was glad to hear it.
Thanks now I really feel old
Same here.
☺️☺️☺️
No doubt
The guy who played Andy looks he tried to make himself look tough. Haha
Great video I was so disappointed when they cut the ending theme at the end oh well..
None of them have changed drastically since the 80s. Love them all.
Looks wise They did.
Melanie did .
No plastic surgery
@@thenightporterthey look old cause there old as my mom would be today if she was living still 70 and up
Thanks
So, no Brian Bonsall? You know, the one actor from the show who's actually in the thumbnail for this video.
Anyway, I know that he did a movie or two (he did 'Blank Check' for Disney back in the 90's, where even the standards of ridiculousness were far surpassed), and then left acting. I believe he's had a run-in or two with the law, so I'm wondering if they needed his permission to add him to the brief montage included here.
Who did he play?
@@keetahbrough he was the youngest son (in later seasons) Andrew (or Andy).
I must be the only one, but the music in the background absolutely makes me crazy. I'm hard of hearing as it is and music like that (or any) just covers up the dialogue. It's the same way for all music for me at least. I guess my hearing aids only help a little...
No this music is ridiculously loud and I don't have hearing aids.
Try reducing the treble, if you can. That sound is horrible on a cellphone.
First one of my favorite tv shows
Every time I see Tina Yothers I think of Family Guy.
I miss that show.
Cool I grew up watching this show especially Michael j fox
Loved that show
Time is a harsh master.
It really is, Duncan
Except for the mom. Sheer looks great
glad there all still around how great
Great show
You literally did everyone but the kid in the videos picture
ITS A SHAME WHAT HAPPEN TO MICHAEL HE IS A VERY GOOD ACTOR
agree completely
I know it's not easy dealing with what he has, but we all have to respect the fact that he hasn't let it stop him from living his life, and he has the most wonderful woman in his life by his side, every step along the way. If everyone could be so fortunate.
@@andregraves3825 so true
Fact Verse keeps getting their ''facts'' wrong. Especially with Michael Gross. In another video, they called him "Steven'' Gross several times. In this video, the graphic shows him being 35 in 1958. That would make him about 100 years old in 2023.
Wow the mom still looks good for 73
Thank. God..they .all..still..alive .and .well. I .still..like. Mike. J. Foxx. He. Still..look..good .and. His. Wife.
i wish you’d kept the music the same and didn’t change it in the beginning 😩
Being a child of the 80's , i enjoyed this show! My favorite guest star was Michelle Meyrink. Couldnt stand, and still cant, Courtney Cox.
I enjoy the updates, but there are sooo many inaccuracies 😔
I had a crush on Justine when I was a teen in the 80s 🇩🇪
I Leah karlsen Family ties I especially liked micheal j fox because he is my favorite actor.
Your friend and fan,

Why is the actor they show for the ad not in the video?
Andrew was an infant during the 1985-86 season by the time the 1986-87 season Andrew was four years old actor's name is Brian Bonsall
He was also on Star Trek Deep Nine.

It's something how Tracey and and Micheal became soulmates from Family Ties.
Facts Verse !!!!!! You made a mistake on Michael gross (age of work on show for the years) and ( age, years ).
I still watch on photo tv
The amount of whining in the comments ruins it for me. Jesus people it's just a video about an old sitcom.. calm down. So what if the uploader made a mistake! That's life.
Family Ties was a great show because the actors and the scripts were about really talking out issues, problems, feelings, emotions, insecurities, love, life, society, and helping one another get through everything... all of the actors were great on the show.
Prefer: I prefer Michael J. Fox's wife, Tracy Pollen, as his girlfriend, Ellen, as opposed to Cortney Cox's character Lauren... the acting was 'great' when you saw Tracy Pollen because the WAY she looked at him and the subtle manners in which they knew one another's insecurities on the show.
Family Ties was underrated when it came the craft of acting in the subtle way the characters read between the lines in the dialog... I just wish the show would have ended better as opposed to Michael J. Fox's, 'The Secrete of My Success'.... I mean saying, 'Alex Doesn't Live Here Anymore'... at the end of a great series, that was a loss.
Favorite Character: I would laugh so hard at Tina Yothers character Jennifer because she was 'normal' and smarter than Alex and the most well-balanced character on the show and the one most ignored yet the most valuable in my opinion because her normalcy kept the family reasonable. Alex was too hyper, Malory was too ditzy -- I didn't like how they portrayed her character as 'stupid' but that dynamic was there to show the class-warfare of how people were looked upon when it came to not doing 'as well' in school, it was more of a commentary of the American Education System as opposed to the Nick/Mallory relationship.
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. Which episode appealed to you the most?
Tina Yothers looks great, wish her well.
So true! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?

Not even a full cast video cuz there wasn't anything about the youngest Keaton which was Andrew played by Brian Bonsall plz add him into the next one.
I remember hearing about him a few years ago. He has drug and legal issues
This channel did it on purpose. It was to get you to come watch the video. They knew what they were doing. They don't give a shit about what you came to see, only that you came to see the video. It's all about click, not integrity.
@@namco003 Omg.. it's not that big of a deal.. aren't you going a little overboard about it?
Who played Jane at the end of the Michael J Fox video, she looks very familiar?

Ok what about Andy played bt Brian Bonsall? Why isn't he included in this update?
Scott Valentine turned into Alan Thicke

So you have the thumbnail of one of the case members not even in the video. Smart
Hey hey
Mallory and Jen ifer look good. Where's Simon, he was pretty funny too
Fox was only 15 years younger than his "parents".
Tracy Pollan (Ellen) is as beautiful as ever.
Nice video, but its confusing, I was 15 in 1982 and I'm 57 , how can Courtney cox been 18 in 1982 if she's the same age as me ? she's probably older than posted...
Nah but where tf the kid in the thumbnail?!?!!?
Justine and Michael look old for their age.
