I had a pub in the UK....when we left the customers spontaneously sang the Cheers theme tune.....hearing it now brings back so many happy memories of the pub, the customers and of course the show itself. The great things about Cheers is that its humour doesn't age and the characters were so true to life. Both are very rare in TV comedy.

I was 14 when the show started. I didn't miss an episode until I went to Parris Island in March 1988. When Sam said "sorry, we're closed", that was the second time I almost shed a tear. The first time was when Hawkeye saw "goodbye" from the helicopter.
I really miss good shows. I doubt there will ever be anything that can compare to Cheers, Mash and Seinfeld. I rarely watch anything other than MeTv.

Try the good place. It is pretty good, but I agree with you. They cannot make the same type of shows because of the social outcry. Times are changing, so hold on to what you can. Let the people coming of age pick their shows like we did ours. ( signed up in april of 88 and hit fort Dix in June...so I understand what you went through to an extent...Have a good one)

I am firmly convinced that Cheers is the best US Sitcom there has ever been. I grew up on it the first time around and have watched it from start to finish many times over the decades. Its truly a remarkable achievement to have 11 seasons set almost exclusively in just one room. The writing and jokes are as funny to me now as they were almost 40 years ago. Its near perfection imo, I much preferred the Sam and Diane period over the Sam and Rebecca period but it still continued its high quality even after Diane had departed. Its easily my top US sitcom, plus Lilith was always hot !

Best sit-com ever. I still don't understand why it was cancelled.
I don't remember any other shows where cast members were replaced and the show never skipped a beat. Shelley or Christie, Coach or Woody, it kept on being funny and very entertaining.
Of course, Coach had a wonderful type of humor, but Woody brought the simplicity of the country mixed with the occasional philosophy that made sense.
One of my favorite scenes was when Diane, in order to spite Sam, goes out with a guy on a bike then returns to the bar... a total mess.

There were a fair amount of jokes about the character during the run of that show. Morn had his own seat at the end of the bar that nobody was ever allowed to sit in. Ever since I was a kid I used to cast comic book characters in my head. In the 60's my Fantastic Four would have been Russell Johnson as Reed (Professor from Gilligan's Island) Tuesday Weld as Sue, Bobby Rydell as Johnny and Vic Morrow as Ben. One bit of imaginary casting I did that actually happened was when Kelsey Grammer was cast as Hank McCoy, the Beast in X-Men.

🍻 Timeless Cheers: While exploring the evolution of the Cheers cast over 41 years is intriguing, it's important to recognize that change is a natural part of life. Emphasizing how they've "changed" may overshadow the richness of their experiences and the enduring camaraderie that makes Cheers a classic. 🌟 #CheersLegacy

I used to head into the Bull and Finch on Beacon Street from time to time for a pint or few, as it's right across from the Common and and it's a cozy place filled with mostly locals these days. Back in the 80s there were lines for people to go in and buy a T-shirt. Today people mostly go for happy hour and pubgrub. The food is all named after characters from the show, but it's tasty and they know how to pour a good pint.

As a Brit I have to admit that I generally prefer our UK comedy shows. However, hands up, I have to say that Cheers and Family Guy in particular are comedy genius from the other side of the pond. The characters and the theme song from Cheers are top notch. Hill Street Blues also gets me every time with its theme tune. Other top shows that I love from the US are Magnum, 24, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Americans, The Wire, Banshee, The Walking Dead, Dexter, The Following, Sons Of Anarchy, Supernatural, The Sopranos, Barney Miller, and many others.

@@pamprier4710 Hill Street Blues was first shown at about midnight over here in the UK if I remember. I used to sit up in bed watching it and loved every minute. The acting was top notch and the cast was so well picked. Barney Miller was just sublime with its off the wall humour. I also remember a comedy set in a radio station which I believe was called WKRP in Cincinnati which had a similar type of humour. I look back at those times with a great fondness as I am sure you do. Glad you also enjoyed these shows.
