  • Were you a fan of the classic 1980’s sitcom, Family Ties? It ran for seven seasons, from 1982 to 1989, and it explored the dynamic of a family with differing political and cultural viewpoints. Creator Gary David Goldberg had noticed that more and more of the hippies from the 1960s were having kids who disagreed with their take on life. These were kids growing up in the Reagan era of the 1980s, where conservative values were taking hold, and things like materialism and capitalism were stressed. As such, these kids often got into huge disagreements with their more liberal parents. And ultimately, this dynamic made for a hilarious sitcom in the form of Family Ties.

In this video, we’re taking a look behind the scenes of this fantastic sitcom, and revealing some things you might not know about it. We talk about some interesting shifts that were made early on, both in WHO played certain roles, as well as HOW they played them. We also talked about how the cast came together for a zoom in 2020 and lamented the fact that people aren’t able to have respectful and civil discussions about political and social issues like the Keaton family was able to on the show. We talk about some fun stories involving how certain cast members got to set each day, including one who literally wasn’t allowed onto the studio lot with their particular mode of transport. And we talk about what the level of drama was on set between the many cast members, and whether or not people got along.
So, if you’re a fan of Family Ties, check out this video today, as Facts Verse presents: Family Ties Cast Finally Addresses Behind-the-Scenes Drama!

I knew David Birney, but I didn't know Michael Gross. David Birney probably would have done a great job also playing the husband, but I heard the Marriage went real bad.

The whole cast of that show was excellent! All three of the original "kids" were able to grow their characters. Mallory started out as "dumb," but it turned out that she was smart but didn't apply herself to her studies. It also turned out that Jennifer was at least as smart as Alex (and possibly smarter), but wasn't in-your-face about it.

The episode that got me was when Alex was in a car accident with his best friend and the friend died. Alex was feeling survivor's guilt and painfully missing his friend. Alex was having vivid fantasies about talking to him. It hit home with me because my best friend was killed in an accident in 1980. It was the most painful time in my life.

I didn't pay attention to politics at all as I was trying to figure out what this world was in general, now I am SO glad they made a show like Alex who was a Republican that everyone liked - it's almost astonishing looking back knowing that was what happened! I used to love the show because I thought it was funny - but a giant blank stare came over my face whenever they ventured into politics!
Yes - I would LOVE a show like this to be on the air now - but I know there is NO WAY it could happen without warfare from both sides! The last time anything came close was the recent Roseanne - and look at the great upheaval that caused?!

Nick. Nick was my favorite character, and his relationships with Alex and Steven absolutely made the show for me, even when I was a kid back in the '80s. As an adult, I definitely would've appreciated more stories around Steven and Elise, but there really aren't too many bad episodes of the series overall. And "A, My Name is Alex" is an episode that has stuck with me as one of the single finest episodes of television even produced. Watching it again as an adult, nothing was diminished. Easily my favorite family-oriented sitcom of all time.

I heard that the story goes that Meredith Baxter-Birney thought that "Family Ties" would be an ensemble piece, and focus on the family collectively.
However, Fox was getting three times the fan mail of any other actor on the show, so the producers capitalised and made Alex the central character.
This annoyed Birney, who felt shortchanged.
She emphasized however that she wasn't mad at Fox specifically, and he hadn't tried to make a bigger part for himself, but it was annoyance at the producers for not giving the rest of the cast as much to work with, and changing the dynamic of the show from an ensemble show to a star vehicle.

that was politics in the eighties. They did socialize outside of work. Dems and Republicans did have big legit fights, but most of it was simple politics, today it's personal. Remember Bush and Clinton became friends at I think it was Clinton's inauguration and they continued to be friends.

It blew my mind that Fox was dating Nancy Mckeon: my two favorite actors where at item! I can just imagine Jo meeting Alex. I can see him saying something like: "does anyone mistake you for a man?" And Jo would say: "no how about you?" Then Alex nervously fixes his tie and walks away

Malary was my favorite, but then again Kelly was also my favorite on Married....with Children later on. I just love the over-the-top dumb characterization of both and in real life both were extremely smart young women, and which proved how talented they were to play a character so different from themselves.

I didn't pay attention to politics at all then as I was trying to figure out what this world was in general, now I am SO glad they made a show like Alex who was a Republican that everyone liked - it's almost astonishing looking back knowing that was what happened!

You know what's funny about the show seeing it?... ORANGE JUICE!... We all had that type of orange juice container in the 80's, it was common and not due to the show, it's just something watching now that stands out. HAHAHA
Michael J. Fox: He was really too big for that show at some point... I don't know how intentional it was but he wasn't bigger than the performance of the other actors, he was bigger than the show in what it was -- a family-oriented thought provoking, mentally understood dance of the unity of a family... Everyone started to wait to see what 'Alex' had to say, especially around 1986 and 1987.... The good thing is the writers kept his character as Alex P. Keaton and not Marty McFly or Teen Wolf.... I don't think there will ever be another Michael J. Fox who hit television as greatly and as impactful with a character that really was NOT cartoon-like but serious-minded.
Michael Gross: I love the fact that his character Steven had this underlined force of nature where he understood EVERYTHING from EVERYONE'S point-of-view and denied his own personal agendas to make sure everyone else was happy.... I like that he didn't bow to his wife but his understanding showed how unreasonable Elise was at times. I loved the 'affair' episode with Judith Light because it showed he understood the power of his position, his life and family, and at the same time their hopes were in his integrity.... What's funny is that Elise knew she had a man who other women wanted and she seemed okay understanding if he had another woman but she was really impressed and surprised at her husband's integrity. The episode where Steven found out about Elise and his best friend being together really hurt him and it showed even greater why Elise would understand him having other women aside from her.... Believe it or not Alex got his insecurities from his mother and his intelligence from his father, it's just that he lacked his father's patience and understanding -- he had that 'go-get-it' attitude from Steven's brother who wound up having a broken marriage, someone Alex looked up to.
Skippy: I always thought he was on the verge of going nuts; I hate the fact that he was an outcast yet was deceived not knowing he was adopted, which made his life make sense and he was the guy that was in a world where everyone around him was either lying to him or making fun of him. All Skippy wanted is to be liked because he cared for people around him.
Nick/Mallory: Everyone had a crush on Mallory but Nick was the guy who was perfect because he was a self-made man and no matter what happened in his life, he was able to overcome the disappointment, hurt, pain, and disdain he faced on a daily basis.... Remember, everyone noted Mallory as 'stupid' but Nick noted how smart and beautiful she was as a person... Ironically Nick came from money, he was just being his creative self... Michael Keaton, Alex, and even Nick's father looked at him as the problem with the future of society -- rebellion counterculture as they had him being the type of person who couldn't speak in complete sentences but he was more intelligent because he had integrity knowing the reaction he'd get from others while painting himself into their lives -- Nick was a genius because he could know people and deal with anything life threw at him, something only Jennifer had which nobody saw.
