Well the crew were just basically the crew of a merchantman, in space, on a routine flight, like they'd done many times before.
One of the crew was actually helping the alien to survive, while attempting to stop the unsuspecting crew from killing it.
They formulated plans, and tried to kill it, it was the harder organism. What decisions did Dallas make that were so bad? He took the responsibility of the commander, bravely.
Ripley stood up to the plate once he was dead, which was her duty.
How did the rest of the crew take bad decisions, their options were limited, weren't they?

    • @nathanpapp432
      @nathanpapp432 3 года назад +5

@@onastick2411 Dallas made some poor decisions and never acted like a real leader, he was visibly agitated about the whole thing from start. I have a feeling he knew what the special order was, as Ripley was able to find out easily. I dont think he ever expected for things to go as badly as they did, and I think he volunteered to go into the vents purely out of a sense of guilt. I think he thought that he could just muddle though, get everyone back in the cryotubes and get back home without anyone being the wiser. He never really seemed to care about what was going on with Kain or the alien. He was just relying on Ash to handle things. I dont think he was doing it maliciously, but out of self preservation. He was just trying to keep his job and get paid. But he was either complicit in what happened or he was bordering on incompetent as a leader.

The idea of capturing the Alien in the screenplay, was that the crew might all be killed, but the company could then find the vessel traveling through space and capture the Alien that way. The vessel would basically be a big cage for the Alien.

Your reaction is my favorite of all time of someone watching Alien. You were so funny, being scare. It was wonderful. When I saw you almost throw up, I felt your nausea, and then I just started laughing. And that's really the point of watching scary movies. They are best enjoyed with friends being scared and then laughing as they talk and tease each other. Alien is one of the best films ever made. I was a teenager when it came out. And now to see it through the eyes of new fans, makes it even more special. It is a masterpiece. Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm now a subscriber.

Given how good this still looks forty years after it was made is such a tribute to the crew involved in making it.
BTW, in the scene where the alien bursts out of Kane, they didn't tell the other actors about the blood-spatter, so their reaction to it is completely genuine. But even without such tricks, the cast is fantastic, the sets are amazing and the cinematography is superb.

I worked at a house of horrors once. People would point and laugh at the obvious fake plastic poppets, but as soon as they were about to move on to the next exhibit, they would go back to being scared. The thought of the monster is always way scarier than the actual monster. That is a good lesson for life: Do the thing even though it is scary. Once you start doing it, it won’t be as bad as you imagined.

Human beings need to address their natural negative feelings like fear, revenge, etc just as they need to address their positive ones. Horror movies give us a safe way to deal with those feelings. I think at the end you said "We survived" and that's the feeling you are supposed to get... we identify with the heroes and are relieved when they survive because we are them by proxy, so WE have survived this trip into our unconsciousness. People who don't address their negative feelings end up acting on them. That's why when you see a story on the news about some husband and father who suddenly kills his family, the neighbors are always saying "He seemed so nice! Their lives were so perfect. I can't believe he did this."
You can also tell a lot about what anxieties and fears a society has during a specific period by its horror films. When the atomic bomb was a big concern in the public mind in the 50s, there were suddenly a lot of horror movies about giant irradiated bugs. When juvenile delinquency was a big problem during the same period, there were suddenly a lot of horror movies featuring teenagers like "I Was a Teenage Werewolf". Later, when sexual mores were being challenged in the 70s, sexuality became a feature of horror films... there was more sex and nudity and sexually promiscuous characters were the first to be killed off.
George Romero's zombie films, which served as the inspiration for The Walking Dead, all feature subtexts about some aspect of society as each film was released; racial tensions in Night of the Living Dead (1968), commercialism and convenience culture in Dawn of the Dead (1978), etc. Horror movies can reflect our social anxieties as well as psychological ones.
And it is kind of like being on a rollercoaster. Why would anyone want to subject their bodies to the sensations of speeding and falling? It's a safe way to experience those sensations and gives you bit of a thrill, and at the end you feel as though you've survived something.

Totally sharing this on my Facebook and subscribing...I love horror movies, but your very practical "leave him there" sensibility was spot on...lol. I remember seeing the posters of the adult Alien when it came out...I was like 6 years old then. It terrified me, but I still wanted to look at it...it was fascinating while deadly.
Next, tackle the sequel...Aliens. Very different vibe (sci-fi action) so I'd be curious how you felt after seeing Ripley face the alien again in a different scenario.

This movie was very innovative in its direction. The reactions at the dinner were authentic, nobody but the victim knew what was going to happen. They wouldn't let any of the actors see the full grown alien until it was their scene to deal with it. It's still a good movie, but a more audience-focused direction may have made it into a dynamic masterpiece . . . like the sequel turned out to be. (Must watch Aliens!)

You actually saw more of the movie than I did the first time I watched it back in 1979. Alien wasn’t allowed for people under the age of 15. I was 13 and managed to pass as 15 so I got in. Turned out to be one of the biggest regrets of my life. I was absolutely terrified. Couldn’t sleep properly for 2 weeks.
It has eventually become one of my absolute favourite movies of all time.

Back in high school, when this movie was first released, I wrote a song to the tune of Simon & Garfunkel's "Cecilia":
Having fun on an outer space trip
with the Alien somewhere on the ship
I go to take a nap in bed
when I wake up something’s eating my head
    Alien, you’re eating my leg
I fall on the floor and I’m dying
Alien, go back to your egg
    I plead and I beg
    go away, go away

When you say how can they bring it back when they are all dead... the plan was to go into hyper sleep after the dinner, but the alien came out of Kane sooner than when Ash was expecting, that’s why he had the look on his face of concern, he knew what was going to happen. The flight home would have preserved the alien in Kane’s stomach until they landed, so there was a plan since Ash was protecting it for the company.

"Alien" was released in June of 1979, so for my 12th birthday in early July, I convinced one of my parents to take me and my best friend to see it. My friend and I shared a huge tub of popcorn. But the movie provided so much tension that we barely ate. So the moment when Dallas is in the air vents, my buddy and I were so wound up that when Dallas turned and was surprised by the alien, we jump in our seats and covered ourselves in popcorn.
I had trouble sleeping the next three nights, with nightmares a'plenty.

Back in the 70s the jump scare was a tool like every other. But thanks to the fact that it got so overused since then, it became the whoopy cushion of horror movies and games. And it doesn't even work properly, if used too often in a row. I really wish they would go back to the roots for horror based media. Blake Snyders mantra, is so on point with this movie, and he was right.( "Make it primal. Make it the way a caveman would understand." ) Nowadays its just mediocre cgi and gore.

"Aliens" is great. And this movie is known as the first action/thriller/horror where the main actor is a woman. Aliens solidified Sigourney Weavers claim to that.
Regarding this movie, it was added to the American National Film Registry (NFR), where up to 25 "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant films" are selected, showcasing the range and diversity of American film heritage to increase awareness for its preservation. A film becomes eligible for inclusion ten years after its original release.
They also aren't all feature films and can be student made films, music videos, home movies, etc..Regarding You and this movie. I have never been one for scary movies myself so I appreciate you viewing this. I grew up watching this when I was younger so any nightmares happened between 8-15 years old for me. To include the Exorcist, Friday the 13th, etc. All the 80's stuff... I found it funny and endearing you had all the lights on. LOL

Hey, Marijchu. This is one of the greatest horror films of all time. Absolutely see the SPECIAL EDITION of Aliens as soon as possible!!!!!!
Ridley Scott kept the entire cast in the dark about the famous CHESTBURSTING scene except for John Hurt. Their reactions were absolutely genuine and mirrored the audience's response! Squeamish Veronica Cartwright got sprayed by fake blood and fell over backward. They only filmed the scene twice. It remains one of the most ICONIC IN CINEMA HISTORY!
The PACING is deliberately slow at the beginning to acquaint the audience with the ship's geography, to demonstrate authentic-looking take-offs, landings and space travel, to familiarize the audience with the crew, to establish the threat posed by the creature and to generate suspense with the mystery of the derelict craft. There's a lot of rich character humor and foreshadowing in those crew interaction scenes as well as a subtext about this future society being a corporate dystopia.
The Swiss artist, H.R. Giger, who designed the xenomorph tapped into insectoid and reptilian features that evoke primal fear. The final product is an iconic movie monster that is pure NIGHTMARE FUEL! His artwork is very bizarre, erotic and has a distinctive look called Giger-esque. The creature's life-cycle and biology is explored throughout the series. By the way, the alien's retractable inner jaw is found in nature in a deep-sea fish!
THE WEYLAND-YUTANI COMPANY is an international conglomerate involved in robotics, interstellar travel and terra-forming. They have a stake in every colony world and are basically the 22nd-century version of the British East India Company of the 17th-19th-centuries. They are a ruthless corporation looking to exploit or weaponize the xenomorph for profit regardless of the negative consequences. The Company is the TRUE VILLAIN of all the Alien movies. In the AvP films, you actually meet the company founders before their merger, Mr. Weyland and Ms. Yutani.
This crew is not a group of explorers, scientists or colonists. They're just SPACE TRUCKERS hauling rocks. This was a First Contact situation they were wholly unqualified for. Hence, all the bumbling and bad judgment calls. Their chief concerns were company policy and pay inequity. Ripley was the only one with the willingness to make difficult command decisions that would have saved all their lives except for Kane's had she not been undermined by Ash. Of course, Ash was privy to a secret corporate mandate.
Parker is MY FAVORITE supporting character! Yaphet Kotto played him to the hilt! He's the blue collar EVERYMAN who just cares about payday and who enjoys deliberately antagonizing his superiors but ends up sacrificing himself for a fellow employee.
Some viewers strongly believe the alien raped Lambert! This is nonsense. The PREHENSILE TAIL probably drew her closer to itself so it could mouth-punch her with the retractable jaw. Drones incapacitate victims for hosting embryos or for food. Those viewers aren't mistaken for perceiving phallic eroticism, though, as that was Scott's intent.
The giant elephant-headed alien pilot of the derelict spacecraft is one of the GREAT MYSTERIES of the franchise. Was he a zoologist, a biowarfare specialist, an exterminator, a trader in exotic organisms, a waste disposal tech or a trucker like Ripley's crew? No one knows. The prequels attempted to unsatisfyingly answer the question claiming his species designed the alien. The elephant head was just a helmet.
Sigourney Weaver became a FEMINIST ICON because of this movie. Ripley is one in a long line of strong female characters that have been showcased in sci-fi and fantasy dating back to Edgar Rice Burroughs' Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Mars! There is an insistence from certain quarters that fanboys of sci-fi and fantasy are anti-female who require the franchises that shaped them be corrected to reflect contemporary norms. It is an inane fallacy perpetuated by people who know nothing of the properties they are dismantling. There's not a single man I know who wouldn't follow Ripley into hell.
Speaking of Dejah Thoris, I'd love to see you react to the best adaptation of Burroughs' Martian stories by seeing JOHN CARTER (A Princess of Mars) from 2012 on Disney+.

A funny story I heard from a famous film maker/actor was that as a boy his parents took him to see Star Wars because he begged them to take him. He loved the movie and two years later his parents see another space movie is in the cinema and decide "Well he loved Star Wars, let's take him to see Alien!" Now, today you can see it as a weird mistake but in 1979 they were innocent to what it would really mean for their young son to see Alien and be scared out of his wits.
In all honestly I liked this movie. I saw it at about eleven years old and it was scary, but I was always able to divide movies and reality, so I was okay with it all. I love 'well made' horror like this. I think a story with strong character make them worth watching but I hate gore-fest horror that just is meant to shock.
This movie has some great actors, Harry Dean Stanton who passed away a few years ago. Never a big actor, but a great supporting actor in movies like 'Alien', 'Cool Hand Luke' or 'Escape From New York'. Then we have the late Sir Ian Holm. From 'Lord of the Rings', to 'Chariots of Fire', a stellar actor. The late Sir John Hurt. Iconic in Orwell's '1984', player the same character with the same death in 'Alien' and the comedy 'Spaceballs', fantastic in 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' and got to be Doctor Who for the Doctors most difficult moment.
But we can not forget Sigourney Weaver who was a kick ass female lead in a time when movie makers didn't want women heading up a cast and Sigourney was one of the pivotal actresses in making females bankable action starts.
