to be clear. this episode came out in 2005. the series started in 1963 and last year we had the 60th anniversary specials. this doctor played by christopher eccleston is the 9th doctor. you'll eventually understand what we mean by that but back in the day the first doctor's actor had cancer and they could choose to end the series, recast him and hope noone noticed, or to get creative with the whole he's an alien thing. they got creative
Welcome to the Whoniverse! Just a bit of a warning, they like to pull your heart strings - so it's best to have tissues to hand, rather than not having them.
Doctor who arguably one of the best tv series of all time anywhere on the planet, makes you laugh, makes you sob, makes people think deeper than they have done in their lives, can be so silly, makes you jump, sometimes all within seconds of each other.
So the confusion you feel is built in to the show at this point. Don't let it weigh you down. Also might not want to worry too much about writing characters and places down until you have seen them twice. A lot of episodes are largely self contained with respect to characters and villains.
But if she doesn't write them down the first time how will she remember that she's seen them once before when she sees them the second time? (Maybe I'm just projecting here my memory is awful).
Never clicked on a video faster! It must be a Christmas miracle. My absolute favourite show (though being from the UK it is required by law to watch Doctor Who) Edit: Nor sure if anyone else has mentioned it, but it might be worth skipping the 'Next time...' sections at the end of each episode, sometimes they can be very spoilery for what happens
This is a very pleasant surprise. I haven't watched Doctor Who since it aired, I think I'm honestly a little scared to rewatch it because I loved it so much and I'm worried it won't hold up. Getting to watch you react to it seems like the perfect way to re-experience the series for the first time in so many years : )
What do you mean by “since it aired”? New episodes currently are airing, with the 2024 Christmas Special coming out next week. As for the quality of the past few seasons vs. earlier seasons in the relaunch vs. older Who, that is a lengthy discussion.
Welcome to the Whoniverse! My favorite thing about the revived show is how faithful it is to the classic series (1963-1989). Adventure, thrills, thought provoking themes, and its bonkers sense of humor. The show has a long pedigree and it was certainly in good hands here.
And with that, boys and girls, Mary is now a Whovian. Welcome, Mary, you have SUCH a journey ahead of you. I didn't really get into Who a lot until coming across an episode that was further down the line. But actually sitting to watch that 1 episode got me hooked. I backtracked and became a proper Whovian.
no i don't think she's a Whovian yet, she only watched 1 episode. Personally once she hits episode 8 is when i think determines if your a Whovian or not.
I think you're gonna love it, Mary. ⏳ This was the very first DOCTOR WHO episode I ever saw, too. I've seen every one since... and love it more and more as time progresses.
This is one of the most creative shows I've ever watched. I do hope you like it as it holds a very special place in people's hearts. I also have that exact same mug! A bit of advice, make sure you clean the corners inside the mug. And also inside the lid as condesation from hot liquids can settle in there. I can't wait to watch your reaction. I'm going to wait to watch it with my wife as she loved watching your Stranger Things reaction.
Yoooo, you're reacting to Doctor Who? Fantastic, I watched a bunch of your reactions over the years, I may have even suggested reacting to Doctor Who. I'm glad you like it so far. I'd recommend two things; 1. be careful of spoilers in the comments, DW fans for some reason can't keep their mouths shut a lot of the time and 2, watch all of season 1 to see if you want to watch the rest and formulate your opinion
I'm so excited that you're watching this! I hope you stick with it. The first season takes a little while to find its footing, but I think you'll really come to love the characters.
I saw the very first episode back in the 1960s. Those Police Boxes used to be a fairly common sight in the UK. The style of the TARDIS was especially common in London.
Fabulous you're doing Who! Just an early thing to point out - it might be worth getting hold of an episode map (for continuity with things like the spin offs (if you decide to do them) and the "minisodes" which i don't know if they're on the blu-ray but are on YT. The first minisode to watch is called Born Again and should be watched between 1x13 and the christmas special The christmas invasion. They designed the revival (it's not a reboot) so that the lore is explained as you go along, so don't worry about being confused initially. Hope you enjoy the journey!
just stumbled on your channel, so excited to watch someone new get into the greatest TV show in the world. honestly stick with it, las you get through the series, ove it or hate it, form your own opinions but have fun!
I was not confused about this episode because I knew the show from my childhood. I was more interested is checking how well they were representing the character. By the way, 7:44 the first episode of Doctor Who ever, was in November 23, 1963. Nobody was paying attention to the show because everybody was watching the news about the hit on JFK. In order to get the show off the ground, they had to re-air the first episode and the second on the following week.
Hope you stick with it, As others have suggested there are some s0-so episodes in this season, and in retrospect this was one of them. But there are some great things to come. Things will become clearer as you progress, but as you can imagine the showrunners are in no hurry . I have been watching since episode 1 in 1963 and some myteries still remain ...
The TARDIS has a chameleon circuit, which enables it to blend in wherever it lands. Sometime before the start of the series it got stuck on a visit to 1950s London and now it looks like a Police Box everywhere it goes. The room we saw in this episode is just a tiny part of what's inside; I don't know if there's ever been a canonical statement of its size but there's at least the space of a large mansion in there.
Love it when someone discovers the Dr. Who-verse for the first time. Don't try to figure too many things out, things will fall into place the more you watch. This is the new-Who which is a continuance of the original Dr. Who that first started in the 1960's. Christopher Eccleston is the 9th to play the Doctor, but my first was Tom Baker playing the 4th Doctor. Looking forward to watching your journey in this timeless sci-fi classic.
OMG!!!! Thank you for diving into the Who'niverse! I've been watching Who since the mid 1970's (It started in 1963.. the day President Kennedy was killed in the USA.) and I personally guarantee that you will LOVE THIS SERIES! ❤ In the first reboot season there are a couple of "silly" episodes, but they were just getting the feel for New-Who.. and it gets SO MUCH BETTER. You will be on the edge of your seat one week and crying your eyes out the next. You might want to consider doing 2-3 episodes per reaction because it's going to take many years to get caught up. EDIT: Forgot to mention, DON'T WATCH THE NEXT TIME'S at the end of each episode.. it contains SPOILERS for the next episode! I have no idea why they did this.
I first discovered The Doctor when PBS in the US first started carrying it in 1978. This was the Fourth Doctor Tom Baker. It is said that the first Doctor you watch will probably be your favorite, and this is true for me. This makes me a little sad you stated with the "modern" series, but as they say better late than never.
OMG OMG OMG, Mary is going to watch Dr Who... (hold back tears of joy) I started with the 4th Doctor in the 70s, can't wait for you to fall in love with this!
Oh this is exciting. But as a word of warning - for some reason there’s a subset of the Dr Who community that seem to take joy in giving spoilers. So be careful about reading chat unless you have someone checking and removing spoilers first.
Congratulations on starting your DW journey! I hope you'll keep up with it. You'll learn more as you go along. Your questions will all be answered (and you'll end up with more new questions). Everyone has their favorite Doctor. Personally, I never cared much for Eccleston, but many fans feel differently.
Stoked that you're embarking on the Whoniverse journey! I hope you'll like it enough to keep going. There's a lot of episodes out there. Not all are stellar but the ones that are good, are *very* good.
DW is crazy and silly, funny and hilarious, heartwarming and and heartbreaking all at once - and most of all absolutely unique. At least by episode 8 you will completely in love with the show.
Just told a friend. One of my favourite reaction channels is starting one of my favourite TV shows EVER!!! Couldn't have wished for a better Christmas present 😂 PS: Get ready for the channel to be discovered by a whole lot of Whovians 😅
I was lucky enough in the mid 70's and early 80's to see the 3rd, 4th and 5th Dr on PBS (public broadcast system from local colleges). Living way out in the country I would have to go turn the antenna to even get a fair video to watch. Most episodes were usually in a series of 5 parts 30 minutes each. The new shows are an hour or some movie length episodes but they are good too )
Yay! A new Doctor Who reactor! I think you'll love it -- Christopher Eccleston, who plays the Doctor, is charming as heck. His casting was a stroke of genius that literally saved this franchise, which had been off the air for years. The entire cast of this return season was so strong. There's a lot to learn about the Doctor's history and what exactly they are. I can't wait to see you discover the wonder. Enjoy!
Oh my gosh! Doctor Who! :D I did not expect this yes! Don't worry, you don't need to have seen the 'Classic Who' to understand 'New Who', it'll explain everything you need to know as you go(heck u don't even need start w/ the beginning. MY introduction to new Who was starting with season 3, I didn't watch seasons 1 and 2 for a while). So a fun fact bout the TARDIS noise, it was created by dragging a key over piano wire (and some pitch altering and splicing of the sound).
We're so happy you're starting Doctor Who. I think you'll love it. I would reccomend not watching the preview of the next episode as they sometimes contain spoilers.
You are doing this right with a journal!! Taking down the names of aliens, their plan or effect, and how defeated is great. Also keep a column for quotes and sayings. My best to you on your journey.
The JFK moment the conspiracy theorist brought up has a real history with Doctor Who. The day he was deleted is when the very first Doctor Who show aired. BTW, the classic series is rather interesting. The FX were very low grade, even for their day, but the stories were incredible. Fortunately, it's not required watching despite it's cannon is still relevant.
I’ve been watching Doctor Who since the Fourth Doctor-Tom Baker- in the mid 80’s. I am finally watching the “classic” Who from the beginning and just about to catch up to where I began all those years ago. It has been a long and wonderful journey for me. Yours is just beginning. I envy you. Have fun!
The Expanse is what you'd call "hard science fiction", basically meaning that on the spectrum between "realistic, could actually happen in our future" and "pretty much fantasy, but in space" it's quite far to the realistic side. Doctor Who is about as far to the softer side as you can get--but it can still be very clever about it.
Doctor Who: some episodes are wacky, some episodes are terrifying, some episodes are uplifting, and some episodes are absolutely devastating. Most episodes are a bit of all of the above, though!
I've been watching your movie reactions til now, but you reacting to Doctor Who, I am here for it. Always. Be careful with the spoilers, don't let them get to you, they can ruin a lot of things. I am sure whovians (Doctor Who fans) won't do that, but others could. Good luck and welcome to the universe.
Great choice for a new show, Mary. It really it's it's very own thing, and it can take a little time to get used to it, but I'm sure you will love it more sooner than later.
Hello again Mary just had a look at your Patreon and yes on the strength of how much i enjoy your channel and DOCTOR WHO well time to be a A REAL Choo Choo! as recommended by your Patreon well there is always a first time for everything.
TARDIS: Time And Relative Dimensions In Space. It is an alien Time Machine-Spaceship disguised as a Police Telephone Box . Rose is The Doctor's traveling companion .
You are into a fun ride. It is silly at times, scary at others, and has many serious moments as well. There many characters you will love. Oh and you can also get a coffee mug that has paint that reacts to heat that makes the TARDIS disappear when it heats up. :)
OMG ITS HAPPENING OMG
Right as soon as I saw the thumbnailI was like HOLY SHIT ITS HAPPENING.
Back in the 1970s I worked in the store that Rose did (in Cardiff). It was great to see it blown up.
Ahahahahqa
😂😂
lol
This must be one of the best comments about Doctor Who that I have ever read xD
Oh man! Love that you are watching Who! The journey will be long, but sooo worth it.
to be clear. this episode came out in 2005. the series started in 1963 and last year we had the 60th anniversary specials. this doctor played by christopher eccleston is the 9th doctor. you'll eventually understand what we mean by that but back in the day the first doctor's actor had cancer and they could choose to end the series, recast him and hope noone noticed, or to get creative with the whole he's an alien thing. they got creative
William Hartnell had arteriosclerosis that affected his ability to perform. He died nine years after leaving the series.
Yes awesome don’t give up this series 😊
This notification made me so happy 😁. You're about to go on an incredible journey.
Welcome to the Whoniverse! Just a bit of a warning, they like to pull your heart strings - so it's best to have tissues to hand, rather than not having them.
I can't believe you are reacting to this show!!! One of the best ever made imo, this is such a great christmas present thank you!
This journey will be... fantastic.
Exciting! Doctor Who is kind of an all over the place show. You will see the best tv and the worst. Some goofy stuff and some brilliant
Doctor who arguably one of the best tv series of all time anywhere on the planet, makes you laugh, makes you sob, makes people think deeper than they have done in their lives, can be so silly, makes you jump, sometimes all within seconds of each other.
There's also a lot of good and bad episodes, but none of it really matters or changes the fact that the show is great all in all.
So the confusion you feel is built in to the show at this point. Don't let it weigh you down. Also might not want to worry too much about writing characters and places down until you have seen them twice. A lot of episodes are largely self contained with respect to characters and villains.

There's a lot to write down at the beginning of the series I expect. New shows always require some exposition.
So excited for this!!
Be ready for a wild ride, this journey is amazing. And remember everyone, no spoilers!
Omg! Mary's doing Dr Who. 😮
omg yes! I love when my favourite reactors start a show I love!

Nah series 1 is fantastic.
It's a TARDIS, it's a police box, it's a lady, it's a time machine!
And she’s sexy 😉
Or a Jason, apparently.
It´s the best ship in the universe...

I am sure whovians (Doctor Who fans) won't do that, but others could. Good luck and welcome to the universe.

Great choice for a new show, Mary. It really it's it's very own thing, and it can take a little time to get used to it, but I'm sure you will love it more sooner than later.

TARDIS: Time And Relative Dimensions In Space. It is an alien Time Machine-Spaceship disguised as a Police Telephone Box . Rose is The Doctor's traveling companion .
My fellow whovians, we got another one!
This will be amazing!
Omgg this makes me so happy ❤❤❤
You will have some much fun watching this!
You are into a fun ride. It is silly at times, scary at others, and has many serious moments as well. There many characters you will love. Oh and you can also get a coffee mug that has paint that reacts to heat that makes the TARDIS disappear when it heats up. :)
The TARDIS' noise (with breaks on) is just some keys on piano strings. But it's so damn good they never changed or updated it.
