Yngwie studied classical music and said his playing style was based more on Classical violin than Blues, one of his favourite composers was Niccolo Paganini, Jill toured Austria and Italy with a String Quartet while in College studying classical violin

“Far Beyond the Sun” and other great covers such as “Eruption” and “The Dance of Eternity” are on Quadratum’s cover album “Loud Playing Workshop”. That title is taken from "Live Playing Workshop", a renowned workshop held at Musicians Institute in Tokyo. The late Mikio Fujioka (Babymetal’s Kami Band) led the workshop, and members of UM took part in it. Basically, UM recreated the MI workshop on the album, as they used to play the same covers, including this one, at that workshop. Btw, violinist Jill has recently been supporting the solo tour of Hizaki (of the bands Jupiter and Versailles), and supporting on guitar on that tour is Mayto, reacter Old Mr B’s very good friend.

I have heard many great violinists, but Jill is a rockstar violinist especially live. I love the way she indirectly says to the other band member, stand aside here I am. She is fantastic and her stage presence is as good as anyone I have ever seen when playing live.

I'm pretty sure I was the first Request for this a looong time ago (after you mentioned playing the violin.) In Yngwie's version there was an organ solo, and that is the part that Jinya is playing during the trade-offs. Coincidentally, Paganini is Yngwie's favorite composer, and when Jill was doing Competitions when she was young she usually did Paganini pieces (she won several). FWIW, Paganini was as talented at guitar as he was at the violin, and always travelled with one. He also wrote some of the most insanely difficult guitar pieces ever . . he was one of the earliest actual composers of music written expressly FOR the guitar (the guitarist in me can hear it when I listen to them). Thanks a lot this went just like I thought it would :0) . There is a Live recording of 'Quadratum' playing Dream Theater's *_The Dance of Eternity_* . Jill plays Jordan Rudess' keyboard parts in the song, and opens the set playing Eddie Van Halen's classic _Eruption_ solo. Whenever you get to it - ruclips.net/video/XC2A1hbuLmI/видео.html

Glad you're watching these Quadratum videos with Jill, she is a wonder. I remember reading years ago Yngwie loved Paganini - here's a snippet from his bio:
"Speaking to NPR, he said that seeing a video of a violinist performing Paganini's 24 Caprices for Solo Violin when he was a teenager changed his life: "I completely freaked out, because I knew that's what I was hearing in my head. I decided I was going to use all of the arpeggios and linear notes and wide vibrato of the violin."
He also transcribed another Paganini for for guitar: "Paganini 4Th Violin Concerto Guitar Pro by Yngwie Malmsteen"

First off 😮 NittPicc knows who Yngwie is!!! 🤯🤯 I still remember the first time I heard him, circa '83/'84 with Steeler and Alcatrazz (I still have my Steeler cassette tapes) When he went solo, with the album Rising Force, I wore that tape out and had to by a new one... thank god for CD's. This stuff takes me back 😁🤘That back and forth with the violin and guitar totally works like the original guitar and keyboard conversation.

    Nice reaction. Jill is phenomenal
    Extract from Encyclopaedia Metallum:
Started playing the violin at the age of 3.
Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts after attending High School Attached to the Faculty of Music, Tokyo University of Arts. She won the Doseikai Award when she graduated. She won the highest prize at the Japan Performer's Competition and many other international competitions. While she was a student at Tokyo University of the Arts, she performed with the chamber music group in various parts of Austria and Italy and received favorable reviews.

Great request and reaction. I knew you’d love this cover. Yngwie himself saw it and was inspired. Imagine this: decades ago, he sent this piece out to the world, and one day it came back to him, transformed as if it had been written for the violin. Jill mentioned that this was more than just a technical piece to cover accurately. Being such an iconic song, she had to put a lot of thought into how to interpret and express it through a different instrument. I’m happy for Jill that her performance impressed Yngwie.
I love going to see Unlucky Morpheus live. They are top-notch musicians, and it’s such a lavish experience to witness their talent on stage. I love Fuki. She’s the best, but I always find myself standing nowhere else but right in front of Jill. That’s where her true magic hits you.🤘

Ingwei basically created the Neo-classical Metal genre. He often cites Paganini’s caprices as a major influence. So it’s interesting to hear Jill cover with her violin a composition for guitar based on the work of a legendary composer for violin.
BTW, because guitars are tuned to fourths and violins are tuned to fifths, I imagine transposing Far Beyond the Sun to violin involves some difficulty, as it would require different fingering that might be awkward compared to on the guitar.
Ingwie’s ego would prevent him from playing a duet with JILL.
Next: JILL’s cover of ERUPTION (first, refresh your memory with the version from Van Halen’s eponymous debut album). It’s an almost note perfect cover. Just astounding.
Also, you got it backwards: distortion enables a guitar to emulate the timbre of an acoustic violin.

I love the 【Live Cover】Eruption(Van Halen) ~ The Dance of Eternity(Dream Theater) live version they did since Eruption is a pretty short song anyway (at least the version she covered) and seeing them play this live still blows my mind. But it's very impressive even in the studio version. Any of them are great.

Ingwie must've wrote this piece for Jill the most adorable sweet devil of metal to play because it is natural to be played by violin, he wrote this piece with the inspiration of Paganini's violin concerto. You must try Jill and Quadratum covering Eruption + The Dance Of Eternity ruclips.net/video/XC2A1hbuLmI/видео.html. It's a crazy performance. Another classic try by Miyako of Lovebites. She covers Far Beyond The Sun as a piano etude ruclips.net/video/3RzRNijnaKA/видео.html.

I read that Ygnwie heard this cover and he was impressed by it. I haven't seen the actual post though, so it might be something that was made up, but it wouldn't surprise me because I agree with you that it works really well for violin which also shows that it was well written for the symphonic edge Ygnwie generally has. This whole cover album and the Quadratum project is amazing. Jill kills it on this whole album (but to be fair, all of them do). Also, I am pretty sure she has played plenty of Paganini in the past since I have read he is one of her favourite composers and she is clasically trained (obviously). She used to do a bunch of streams in the past, so she might have done part of something by Paganini.

Okay, home now 3 hours later, here goes:
parenthetical comment is the interviewer's, or possibly the editor's...
"I watched this young* Japanese girl [ Unlucky Morpheus ] on RUclips recently playing 'Far Beyond the Sun' on the violin, note for note, absolutely perfectly. It was really great, and what was so interesting is that it sounded like a piece of violin music, not just a string of guitar licks. It is so crazy that it sounds exactly like it was composed for the violin. I was amazed by that. It was like it had gone full circle from me being inspired by the violin to hearing it played by a great violinist."
      - Yngwie Malmsteen, in Guitar Player magazine, Vol 55 No 11, November 2021
      * I think she's in her mid to late thirties, no?

    • @MaartenT
      @MaartenT Месяц назад +2

@@normanweaver7935 From what I can find she was born in February 1983, so she is 41 apparently. I didn't realize she was a year older than I am (almost to the day), I assumed she was in her mid 30's as well. Funnily enough, an other site says 1987, same day though, so like with a lot of Japanese musicians it's hard to be sure. So let's say mid-30's to early 40's, so not "young" any more (at least, I don't consider myself to be). Btw, thanks for that quote, it might have been your post that I had read a while ago because this is more-or-less what I remembered.

JILL is a graduate of Japan's number one national university, Tokyo University of the Arts.
Upon graduation, he won the Doseikai Prize(同声会賞).
She also won the highest prize at the Japan Musicians Competition and other international competitions.
The violin does not have the frets that an electric guitar has on its fingerboard.

Not a Picardy third. The song is in C minor with three flats. She just ends her phrase on Eb with the band playing an Eb power cord, Eb & Bb with no third. So it sounds like we changed to the relative major Eb. Picardy third would have raise the Eb one semitone to the E to make a C major cord. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

I've seen a video where Jill just casually burns through some Paganini during an online interview/conversation. She's incredible.
Note that the solo trade-off is in the original Yngwie version; it's just that it's between guitar and keyboards. Here, Jill plays the guitar solos while Jinya (guitar) plays the keyboard solos. As far as I can tell, Jill transcribed/translated all the guitar parts in the entire piece as faithfully as possible.

Thanks for such a great reaction! Jill is the Goth Alice In Wonderland! She is such a freakin' badass! Other band members say she is a bit of a wild child, as well as, showing up to 10 am meetings with drink in hand. This is one of my all time favorite covers! Jill is epic and in the forefront, but they all did just as well as she did! And yes, Jill started violin at 3 y.o. Another of my favorites' I think you'll go nuts over is JUNNA's cover of " 【 JUNNA 】Through The Fire And Flames / DragonForce - Drum Cover " ruclips.net/video/UKr1H4Jv6is/видео.html She looks like she's 13 in this, although she was in her early 20's...lol I know you love JUNNA, but if you have not seen this (I didn't see a reaction to it), it will excite you as well. You will probably forget to breathe thru the whole song. It is exhausting (in a good way) to watch. Don't know the Malmsteem version but for me it sounds like its very much inspired by Beethoven. And again i have to think about my music teacher in the 70s who told us that if Beethoven would live today he would play metal. And yeah, also proves again that metal is the "modern classic".
And now i also remember that in the 70s i often have read about great femal violinists from japan, but at that time of course they all just played classical music. And today, we just see more and more of these highly classical trained girls in metal.

Jill started playing guitar at 3, as she wanted to copy her brother, who is not a good. Her 1st teacher made her learn by ear, and Jill claims to hear in perfect pitch. I think she said she was 7, when she 1st read sheet music. Jill was a classical musician, then at college she discovered X-Japan, and got in to rock/metal music.
QUADRATUM is just 4 members of the band Unlucky Morpheus, who have 6 members. QUADRATUM released an album/EP called "Loud Playing Workshop", or as the bassist likes to call it "Jill's Promotional Workshop", all the tracks are covers. Fuki, the singer from Unlucky Morpheus, is the one who went around all the music companies to get permission for them to do the tracks, something she said she's never doing again. One of the tracks on the 9 rack album is "17th Century Chicken Pickin'" , a track that Jill says was the hardest thing she's ever had to learn, due to the speed of it. No video was done for it, but ruclips.net/video/sRQWHPFAMqU/видео.html
