Check out the live version. You'll love it. The violinist Jill plays the arpeggio part instead. Then, I recommend 'Angreifer' next. They are one of my favorites and such an incredible band. Jill is a badass, head-banging violinist.🤘

4 of the members has a side project called Quadratum and they play instrumental covers and Jill the violinist is the star, they have their MV on UM channel. I mean playing Eddie Van Halens Eruption on violin is pretty hardcore. Jill has just released an album with another great violinst from the hardrock duo soLi. They call them self TONERICO. Awesome album as Quadratum's album.

A bit more about Quadratum (Bass player Ogawa jokingly calls it the 'Jill showoff album') For LOTS more violin with a metal band, check out their cover of Yngwie's *_Far Beyond the Sun_* ruclips.net/video/E2hZDzJp9Pc/видео.html , where Jill does indeed 'show off'. She was a child prodigy violinist and she liked to play *_Paganini_* pieces in competition. For some actual
New World Symphony, check out *_Swan Song_* by Lovebites - composed by *Miyako* (guitar/piano). She added elements of the Dvorak piece and her favorite piano composer, Chopin (she does Chopin's Revolutionary Etude as the Intro for the song) - ruclips.net/video/dcMVtrvpJpk/видео.html She studied classical piano from age 3 and started guitar at 18.

To answer your questions, quite a bit, but not as much as some. Yes I have seen the live, at the only concert they have done outside Japan, and that was in London.
What do I love about the band, well you had to ask. If you ever get the chance to see them live, they just have that thing, it like a contention between each other and the people at the show. Basically there are a bunch off nerds, who are really good friend, who like to play games with each other party game, video games, they are like a family. A family that like to play music, and are really good at it, and they want to play for their friends, the fans, and make them feel like part of the family.
They have the habit of doing things because they can, and I'm not talking about easy things here, it's things that most bands have not and would not do.
They are a small independent band, that do everything themselves, management, recording, mixing, releasing on their own label, their own tour management, tour arranging, and why? Because they like to be in control, they do not want someone telling them what to play, or it may sound better this way and not that.
They have also said that they will not change the style they play, just to become popular. Meaning they play for the Japanese market, and the Japanese fans, and they are happy with that. They are not going to adjust what they do, just to become popular overseas. They were shocked and happy at the number of overseas fans they have got, but will not change just to become popular in the west.
OK the one doing the growling was the band leader Shiren, he had the neck make up on, and started of the solo.
The violinist is called Jill, and is a world class violinist, she graduated top of her year at the Tokyo University of the Arts. Which is where she discovered rock/metal music and fell in love with it. While in this video, Jill is more in the background, when they play live she is more up front, and does a fair amount of solo's on her own, even in the live of this song.
Fuki is the singer, who is a workaholic, she is always doing something, she has sung with a lot of other groups, and over 120 albums to her name, so far. She also does voice acting, she used to run a radio show, she has a kanji kentai level 1 degree, and she is a Sugino fashion college costume creation graduate, she makes some of the costumes she and the band wear, and has also done some modelling work.
Add to the fact she has never been trained as a singer, when she was young she copied how her mother sang around the house, and sang that way at school. The style is from Kabuki Theater.

Good reaction. UM is a top talent band, but this was their first video with Jill, the violinist, and she does only color the guitar/vocal lines in this, but she is a MONSTER of a virtuoso player. Check out UM's songs "Cadaver/Revadac" or any of their Quadratum sideproject videos like "Far Beyond the Sun," or "Dance of Eternity." I'm not sure the New World Symphony is in this, but bits are used in Lovebites' "Swan Song."

This was great as always. Keep doing you. I'll be along for the ride. Thanks for sharing the fun!
    TL;DR part...
Having grown up in a house with classical music playing through speakers in *ALL* the rooms 24/7, this band feels warm and cozy. The classical patterns and feels are there but with a dark and minor twist. Lots of metal bands do this but the violin mixed with Fuki's vibrato hammer it home especially hard.
BTW: Since you mentioned it. Dad built a harpsichord and a pipe organ over two separate summers when I was a kid (he was a teacher but did this stuff to make extra money and because he could). I got to do my piano practice on those instruments, and it's amazing how it still didn't stick very well. Musical talent is a gift some of us aren't given no matter how hard we try.

All Ankimo members are extremely brilliant. I've never listened to a song from them I disliked, I recommend you listen to その魂に安らぎを 〜 Dignity of Spirit live if you want to hear more.
For the members the red haired one Shiren (guitarist and composer) is the one doing the screaming, here are the members from Japanese wikipedia. It's kinda too long though
Shiren / Formerly known as Yukimura Hirano:
Responsible for guitar, composition, arrangement, scream, programming, and chorus[1]. Leader of Unlucky Morpheus. Since April 1, 2015, changed the name from Yukimura Hirano to Shiren in Unlucky Morpheus activities[2].
Born on March 10 (Pisces) / Blood type AB / From Kanagawa Prefecture / Height 170cm[3].
Influenced by bands/musicians such as X JAPAN, ANGRA, Yngwie Malmsteen, Children of Bodom, LOUDNESS, Steve Vai, Pat Metheny, Nobuo Uematsu, etc.[4]. The first rock song he copied was X JAPAN's "Kurenai"[3].
He learned piano in his childhood and played trumpet in the brass band club in junior high school.
He encountered X JAPAN during his high school entrance exams and started playing guitar after the exams. After graduating from high school, he attended MI JAPAN music school and became a skilled guitarist who regularly ranked high in guitar contests since his teens. Besides guitar, he also handles trumpet, death voice, keyboards, club dance, etc., on stage.
Regarding composition, he plans and creates themes, concepts, and presentation method more theoretically than spontaneously. Since the end of 2016, he has been suffering from symptoms of tendonitis, using a guitar stand during live performances, sometimes only playing guitar solos and leaving other parts to Jin'ya to focus on screaming.
He has participated in bands such as Yōsei Teikoku and BABYMETAL in the past.
Fuki / Formerly known as Fuyuki Tenge:
Responsible for vocals, lyrics, chorus, web and media affairs. Although there has been no clear declaration, the credit name was changed from Fuyuki Tenge to Fuki since the Blu-ray "Lunatic East 2019 TOUR FINAL".
Born on June 9 (Gemini) / Blood type O / From Tokyo / Height 160cm[3].
Influenced by bands/musicians such as Onmyouza, Shunka, Kuroneko, ASKA, Takashi Matsumoto, etc. The first rock songs she copied were SIAM SHADE's "Setsunasa Yori mo Tooku e" and LUNA SEA's "BELIEVE"[3].
She became interested in bands during her athletic girl days in junior high school, encountering X JAPAN and Onmyouza. With a powerful singing voice that utilizes her volume without being overshadowed by instruments or noise, she has confidence in delivering her own voice to the audience.
Initially, her singing style was straightforward, but it gradually changed to a powerful style using high tones and vibrato as weapons, earning her a place among the top of J-pop metal singers.
She loves cute things dearly, holds an annual pass for Sanrio, and loves singing theme songs for anime like "Kaito Joker," "Terra Formars Revenge," "Ikemen Kakumei," and "W'z."
She graduated from Sugino Fashion College's junior college department and is deeply knowledgeable about fashion, overseeing stage costumes in general.
She is skilled in drawing as she wanted to become a manga artist. She also practices calligraphy to create CD jackets, showing her versatility. However, she also exhibits manly behavior, bringing frozen foods to the studio as lunch, not knowing if they can be thawed.
Jin'ya / Formerly known as Tansan:
Responsible for guitar. Since April 1, 2015, he changed his activity name from Tansan to Jin'ya[5].
Born on July 8 (Cancer) / Blood type A / From Tochigi Prefecture / Height 170cm[6].
Influenced by bands/musicians such as Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, and Nuno Bettencourt. The first rock song he copied (if only the riff) was DEEP PURPLE's "Smoke On The Water"[6].
He started playing guitar because he admired his acquaintance's older brother(?) in his childhood. During his beginner days, he mainly practiced guitar at online gatherings. He practiced guitar almost entirely on his own and regularly performed at live houses with friends to build courage and stage sense. He had no intention of pursuing a professional career in music and only considered music as a hobby during his high school years. However, during high school, when he faced Unlucky Morpheus in a battle of the bands with another band, he caught the eye of the leader, Shiren, and joined the band.
He openly declares himself as a skillful guitarist heavily influenced by Paul Gilbert, but he is also naturally naive, often teased by his bandmates for his behavior.
Hiroyuki Ogawa / Formerly known as 小川洋行, Ogawa-kun:
Responsible for bass. Although there has been no clear declaration, the credit name was changed from kanji representation to Roman alphabet representation since the Blu-ray / LIVE CD "XIII" Live at Toyosu PIT.
Born on March 24 (Aries) / Blood type unknown / From Asahikawa City, Hokkaido / Height 173cm[6].
Influenced by bands/musicians such as LUNA SEA and MR. BIG. The first rock song he copied was LUNA SEA's "TIME IS DEAD"[6].
He has a background in jazz, funk, and rock. He met the leader, Shiren, at MI JAPAN music school and was invited to join Unlucky Morpheus for his reliable bass play. Although he is not inclined towards heavy metal, he joined the band as a supporting member due to his friendship with others. Despite this, he participates in live performances where both vocalist Fuki and leader Shiren are absent, earning the title of the "attendance king" for some reason and reigning as the shadow ruler.
He also works with TRICK BOX and THE CHARM PARK.
    Fumiya:
    Responsible for drums.
Born on December 18 (Sagittarius) / Blood type AB / From Teshikaga Town, Kawakami District, Hokkaido / Height 168cm[6].
Influenced by bands such as X JAPAN, LUNA SEA, ROUAGE, DIR EN GREY, MALICE MIZER, SEX MACHINEGUNS, SIAM SHADE, Janne Da Arc, SLAYER, HELLOWEEN, DARKANE, ANGRA, DREAM THEATER, Lamb of God, SikTh, System Of A Down, Strapping Young Lad, etc.[4], and musicians such as Peter Wildoer, Mike Portnoy, and Akira Jimbo[6]. The first rock song he copied was LUNA SEA's "STORM"[6].
His nickname is "Fumin." When it was suggested during his junior high school days that he should inherit a drum set at his home if it wasn't being used, Fumiya, who was interested in music, decided to start playing drums on a whim.
Actually, this drum set was purchased by his older sister, a fan of X JAPAN who admired YOSHIKI and bought a full drum set but never played it, leaving it as a decoration at home. Due to the lack of music stores in their town, Fumiya had to travel to distant cities in Hokkaido to buy CDs and drumsticks in bulk, making music impossible without high motivation. Despite this, he became even more immersed in music.
Upon graduating from high school, he moved to Tokyo alone. Through various band experiences, he gained love from many seniors and was admired by juniors. His extensive network in the industry is extraordinary. Currently, he is dedicated to activities with Alternation of Generations and Unlucky Morpheus.
    Jill:
    Responsible for violin.
Born on February 17 (Aquarius) / Blood type A / From Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture / Height 155cm[6].
Influenced by bands/musicians such as X JAPAN, Muse, Marilyn Manson, Linkin Park, L'Arc〜en〜Ciel[6]. The first rock song she copied was DREAM THEATER's "Dance of Eternity"[3].
She mastered the violin from a young age and entered Tokyo University of the Arts[4]. She has won many awards in domestic and international competitions.
She and her older brother, Louie, formed About Rose Noire while studying at Tokyo University of the Arts.
When she received an offer from Shiren during a live performance, she joined Unlucky Morpheus. Jill's addition added depth to the music, acting as a catalyst for the band's transformation. Despite her gothic appearance, she displays a rock side by headbanging while playing the violin during live performances.
Her video "Shingeki no Kyojin 'Guren no Yumiya' Violin Cover" posted on RUclips has surpassed 3.2 million views. Similar to guitarist Jin'ya, she is also naturally naive, providing plenty of amusing anecdotes.
Since 2024, she has been active as a duo unit "TONERICO" with violinist Saori Hoshino (soLi).

As others have said, the newer official live versions of this song are even better. This studio recording was relatively early on in Jill's permanent tenure with the band, before they'd fully figured out how to best integrate her violin within the instrumentation.
She's more prominent in their arrangements over recent years, plus there's the Loud Music Workshop instrumental cover album/EP that their sub-unit Quadratum did, where she's almost constantly centre stage. She's also just released an album as half of Tonerico, a violin duo with Saori Hoshino of soLi (supported by various other musicians).
The growls were being done by Shiren, the guitarist with red hair and fake neck tattoos in the video, he's the band leader and also sometimes play piano, harmonica and even trumpet. He had a bunch of health issues since 2016 with tenosynovitis of the arm & shoulder; with Jill going through a period of playing his guitar parts on violin for shows when he physically couldn't play guitar. These days he manages his condition by playing very light headless guitars and sometimes having his guitar on a stand rather than a shoulder strap. Shiren was also one of the original studio members of the Kami Band for Baby Metal's early recordings.
Unlucky Morpheus have never played in the US, infact I think their only gig outside of Japan was as part of the Metal Matsuri festival in London in 2019. The band has been going since 2008 (though they've only had a permanent lineup since around 2015) and has been fully independent for all of that, rather than signed to a label.

Now for a metal band that includes both the violin and the flute: Eluveitie (pronounced Helvetie) plus a couple more surprises. Rebirth ruclips.net/video/d-pSq4MJmy8/видео.htmlsi=_RAuQ1V0RUsvsN1d
As for the superb Unlucky Morpheus, one of the songs where the violin has a solo is Carry on Singing in the Sky, though there's more. 😉😉🤘
It's the guitars doing that harpsichord like sound, with plenty of gain and treble but limited distortion you can get that tone. Classic power metal bands of the 90s like Rhapsody and Angra love that sound and some of their songs are love letters to the Italian baroque. Unlucky Morpheus are directly in their line, they carry the torch forward though Angra is still top and Rhapsody keeps going after it split in two. 😍😍🤘

There's a great live version of BLACK PENTAGRAM (played as the finale) on RUclips that will delight you; the violin is more prominent in the mix, and the extended breakdown includes a solo from JILL. Also, you get to see who is screaming.
FUKI has an insane vibrato, and extreme version of the vibrato common in Japanese popular music, and fundamental in Enka. She also sings with a rather nasal tone common among Japanese male vocalists in Metal and Visual Kei bands.
Now that you have met FUKI, you need experience DOLL$BOXX (pr. "Dolls Box"), the GACHARIC SPIN side project that came about after FUKI filled in for the ARMMY, the original GACHAPIN vocalist, when health problems prevented her from fulfilling the band's touring obligations. Most people start with TAKE MY CHANCE (OMV).

Yes, they are very good band with 2 beautiful ladies! Personally, I have a crush on Fuki (singer), but Jill is top notch violinist. You must check them live, because they sound even better then in studio! Let's say - songs "Dignity of Spirits" or "Angrifier", but also have this song live, on their channel. Also, they have very complex and interesting compositions...you could check legendary Cadaver/Revadac where they play first half of the song normally, and second half in reverse! Crazy, but totally interesting and good!

The vibrato appearing just about everywhere in Fuki's singing is a common thing in Japanese music. Fuki makes fantastic use of it in many songs. A lot of other Japanese bands use the same thing, but Fuki is just a master of it.
I have a feeling you'd enjoy Fuki's solo project, and her song Bloody Rain. It's also got violin's. And subtle gothic imagery. So subtle. ;)

Congrats on finding Unlucky Morpheus-one of the best, most creative bands in the world today. They remain independent by choice, in order to retain complete artistic freedom. They started off in 2008, focused on making soundtracks to video games and anime. They went through a lot of different stylistic phases, but the big transformation was when they brought Jill (violin) on board. Like many Japanese bands, they sound incredibly clean and tight live. My top suggestion for a live clip: “Angreifer” ruclips.net/video/gGKWgM4IOgc/видео.html
Meanwhile, amid the (justified) excitement over the Japanese all-female metal bands, we forget there are plenty of guys who throw down. Shiren, founder and one of the guitarists, also does the growls. Fumiya (Drums) is, as you saw, insane and inexhaustible-one of the best rock drummers in the world. Jinya (G) and Ogawa (B) are top-notch as well. Basically, this band is a technical monster. Fumiya and Ogawa also have interesting, “beast” personae which contrast with the “beauty” of Fuki and Jill. That contrast is a deliberate trope, similar to the “Beauty and the Beast” imagery of many European symphonic metal bands.
Fuki (lead singer) is a legend in Japan, and one of the busiest artists anywhere. She is also lead singer for UM, Doll$boxx, Lightbringer and her own ongoing project, Fuki Commune. Her style is very much out of the Japanese classical tradition, with the oversold vibrato and intense high notes. She collaborates with a lot of the top musical talents in Japan. Jill (violin) also has a busy dance card, including collaborations with Fuki and others outside of UM.
Jill is actually my favorite member of Unlucky Morpheus. I consider her the best rock/jazz/metal violinist in the world today, and probably the best since Jean-Luc Ponty. After Shiren (founder, original lead guitarist) started suffering from an injury that limits his playing, they rewrote a lot of his solos for Jill. Hard to come up with another violinist who could pull that off. Here are links to instrumentals featuring her in UM’s instrumental project Quadratum:
Cover of van Halen "Eruption" ruclips.net/video/eTb0TQtVT6k/видео.html
Cover of Malmsteen "Far Beyond the Sun" ruclips.net/video/E2hZDzJp9Pc/видео.html Cover of Dream Theater, played blindfolded: ruclips.net/video/8eZVVtaOBKk/видео.html
I saw UM live in London in 2019, when they headlined Metal Matsuri. Great show, and the chemistry between Fuki and Jill was electric.

No big fan. For some off reason I really never got into them, but this one I like.
Fantastic band musician wise, and had great fun checking out the Malmsteen and Dream Theatre instrumentals they covered. Malmsteen is a big name in Japan, and considered the master of arpeggios. Though being a total a** sometimes, he is very passionate about music. Recommend checking out his interview with Rick Beato. He also had a lot of influence on Japanese musicians... and I'm pretty sure it's one of the reasons we hear it in their music.

The growls are being done by Shiren, the guitarist with the red hair. Unfortunately, he suffers from an inflammatory condition called tenosynovitis that sometimes prevents him from playing live. In those situations, violinist Jill will cover his guitar solos. Unlucky Morpheus has a live version of this song on their channel from just a year or two ago where she does just that.
A more fun fact about Shiren is that he was one of the first two guitarists for Babymetal's live backing band, the Kami Band. It was only for one night and even then only for the encore (two songs) at a show now called Legend I (pronounced Legend Eye, not Legend One).
As for where to go next, you can take any of the suggestions others have already mentioned, but I'd suggest my favorite song from UM, "Unending Sorceress." It gives Jill a little more time to shine, features the "beauty and the beast" back and forth vocals, and the video itself has some cool references. Plus the song is about Final Fantasy VIII.

This MV is the perfect introduction to this band.
The live version is different with more violin, but the mix isn't great.

Great reaction. Four of them out of six without the vocalist and one of the guitar duo made a project titled Quadratum featuring the violinist Jill. You'll be drop your jaw how skilled they are. Eruption + The Dance Of Eternaty live ruclips.net/video/XC2A1hbuLmI/видео.html. This performance consits of a couple of cover titles. I strongly recommend you to listen to original piece as well. Covering tapping guitar and key board with a violine is insane but she does it insanely well. I think you have reacted to Lovebites but if not, try their Swan Song + Revolutionary Etude ruclips.net/video/6wSjZnbYPdw/видео.html. They are classic inspired and as technical as Unlucky Morpheus. Enjoy!! Ah, the siger is also operatic with vibrato.
