    In Japan, metal bands first appeared in earnest in 1980, and at the same time, the so-called "City pop" genre was born. ("Citypop" has recently been rediscovered on RUclips and is popular around the world.) Over the past 50 years, Japanese music has taken on elements from various genres, diversified and evolved uniquely. And because of the Japanese language, they have been trapped in the Far East island country without being introduced to the world. Now, the invisible hand of the Internet has opened the mysterious treasure chest.

    As mentioned, Touhou project is in the fantasy genre, namely dragons, knights, magic, spirits and etc. So, many of their song lyrics are very poetic; they even use ancient (and difficult) words the modern Japanese do not use. The songs are about battles, unrequited love, vain sacrifice, spirits, vampires, knights, dragons, etc. You get the idea. They are the best power metal band of Japan. Fuki is the best metals lead singer of Japan, bar none.

    One of my favourite bands! Great presentation, fantastic research!
    The reason for Shiren just singing in the first song is his problem with his hand, which makes it impossible for him to play the guitar for an entire live show. Jill actually plays his guitarpart in this version. And the violin solo in the last song is from some classical part, not sure which.
    The band you were thinking of in the end of the video is Ningen Isu, they aren’t folk metal, more doom metal or classic metal, inspired by Black Sabbath and that era. Great band though, Heartless Scat and Namhage are two great songs for example.
    The most famous Japanese folk metal band is Wagakki band, they incorporate old Japanese instruments into their music. I’m not too familiar with them but what I’ve heard is great! They were some talk of them appearing at the postponed Olympics, not sure if that were just rumours. This is perhaps a good introduction: ruclips.net/video/ponTbDDMYjw/видео.html
    And lastly, Lovebites are really great, power metal, and in English. More for an international audience perhaps, and actually I believe most of their albums are produced in Finland! They have toured in Europe, the UK mostly.

    • @MetalAcademix
      @MetalAcademix  3 года назад +8

      Thank you for the clarification abour Shiren. You are entirely right, I was thinking about Ningen Isu - but apparently placing them in the wrong subgenre. And yes, Lovebites is the band on everyone's lips, as you say, probably because they tour outside Japan.
      Another commenter left links to some awesome concert where Lovebites and DragonForce played together - it looked like so much fun! I wish Unlucky Morpheus would also embark on a world tour, I am sure they would be as popular as Lovebites. - Anamaria

      I second WagakkiBand. If traditional inspired is what you're after, they're what you want to hear. The word "wagakki" actually means "ancient instruments". They have a guitarist and bassist, and a drummer, but also another drummer who plays the traditional wadaiko drums. They also have a flutist, koto player, and a girl who plays the shamisen. My favorite of theirs is "Akatsuki No Ito", but they've done a ton of great songs.
      Ningen Isu, as was mentioned before, is not really traditional except in their clothing (except the drummer, who dresses like a 1970's Yakuza). They're more like Onmyoza, who dress in Edo period clothing but play straight metal.

    Been following Japanese metal for about 15 years now and I have yet to come across another band like Unlucky Morpheus. They have the charisma of one of the greatest Japanese metal bands of all time, X Japan, combined with the superior instrumental skills of bands like Galneryus or Versailles. Fuki is also on a completely different level and seems to me like a Japanese version of the old singer of Nightwish. I'm a 30 year old man and have never been so excited about a band. And yet NOBODY knows about them. Its a crime...

    It's nice to hear someone that's a fan and done some research, but a few things you missed :)
    Fumiya left Galneryus just over 2 months ago. Fuki has been involed in over 90 releases in around 14 years, most of them full albums, she also does a festival called FukiFest, as well she has released a solo album. The bassist Ogawa is really a jazz player and was a protégé of Fujioka Mikio, who you may have seen with Babymetal, before he past away.
    There were 3 songs on Change of Generation that were reworks, “Kyomou no koibito”, “Wings”, and “Change of Generation”
    Unlucky Morpheus started in about 2008, after another band Shiren and Fuki were in and also some of Lightbringer member, that did covers of songs from video games. Fuki had enjoyed working with Shiren so much, she told him that she's like to work with again, so they started Unlucky Morpheus. It was only really supposed to be a side prodject with just the 2 of them. They used to ask friends to join them if they wanted to play live. Then after a few years they added another member, another singer, who you'll see now and agian, he was on stage at the end of the last video with the fox ears. Jill was the last member to join in 2016, so the band took 8 years to form.
    They 1st toured Japan in 2018, and last year was their 1st performance outside Japan, in London at Metal Matsuri. And can I say IMHO the best band there in a sea of good Japanese bands. They have since said they want to do a world tour, but are waiting for the current crisis to end.
    Seeing as you find it hard to get imformation on Unlucky Morpheus, can I point you in the direction of r/UnluckyMorpheus, an and sure someone will help you out, more than likely Zaz
    More bands for you:
    The Gazette, start with "Ugly"
    Dadaroma, just a warnig they are a visual kie band, and can be a bit all over the place at times.
    Yuzukingdom
    Blood Stain Child, a band that has had a few singer changes.
    Mary's Blood
    Fate Gear
    Aldious
    Bridear
    Nemophila, a new band, but very good.
    And if your willing to step outside metal to heavy rock, then "Band Maid" is a must

For me the greatest MV that they've made is CADAVER/REVADAC, also Unending Sorceress based song for Final Fantasy 8, for Live my favorite is opfer but fan favorites are Angreifer, Dignity of Spirit and Get Revenge on the Tyrant. I think you were talking about the Wagakki Band, another folk rock/metal band that you shout check out. Yousei Teikoku is a blast too. Shiren was part of the band. I suggest "Patriot Anthem" (live) and the MVs of "Shito Kanadeshi Hametuno Tategoto" and "Flamma Idola".

Undead Corporation is another group that has done quite a few Touhou songs (quite a bit heavier than Ankimo though). Yes!! Cadaver/Revadac is a MUST for Unlucky Morpheus reactions. It's a nine minute video comprised of two songs. Cadaver is about death, and a soul leaving its body wondering what comes next. Revadac is about the soul re-entering the body and bringing it back to life. Those contrasting meanings are further shown by the fact that Revadac is composed of Cadaver's sheet music played in reverse. Different lyrics obviously, but the same sheet music. The video showcases this by "flipping" in the middle and playing backwards. If you watch, you'll notice them moving in reverse, such as their hair moving before their heads move. Also, you'll see parts where even if you don't understand Japanese, you can plainly see that Fuki is not saying what you are hearing. Those parts are the lyrics to the other song in reverse and will line up after the video flips. It's really interesting and an absolute masterpiece.
      And if you want to see something that will really blow your mind, after you watch Cadaver/Revadac, look up "Cadaver/Revarac inverted version". Someone took the original video and reversed the whole thing to prove that except for the lyrics, it absolutely does sound the same. It's nothing short of amazing.
      And yes, they do play it live. All nine minutes of it.

    • @Gideon_the_Seeker
      @Gideon_the_Seeker 3 года назад +1

      @@MetalAcademix Jill is a truly wonderful musician. She is the most classically-trained member of the band and got her start as a violin prodigy at age 3. She has won numerous international competitions and she has earned the highest rank in the Japanese Academy of Performers. Regarding why she seems to be more prominently featured in live shows compared to studio recordings, this is largely due to the fact that Shiren was diagnosed with Tenosynovitis in 2016. This condition affects his hand and arm in a way that makes it very difficult for Shiren play the guitar (you may have noticed in some of their videos that he uses a stand to hold his guitar). In the studio, he can take his time and rest as needed while recording his guitar parts, but live shows are too painful for him. So around 2017 he started working closely with Jill to transcribe all of his guitar parts to the violin so that she can play his parts live.
