François Côté is the designer who came up with the XTERN drop foot braces, but before that, he was an active man who got injured in a snowmobile accident. This event changed his life forever because he ended up with foot drop.
To face this challenge, he used science to develop a dynamic ankle-foot orthosis that would allow him to keep his normal pace and continue his same level of activity. The XTERN’s spring-loaded technology gave him his life back, letting him walk, run, and hike.

I'm trying to get this currently, but it's quite difficult. I used the locate a clinic feature, only 3 were within 100 miles of me. I called two and was told no, they don't carry it. Then called the local Hangar clinic, he laughed at me and said he'd never heard of it. If I can manage to get my hands on this (with insurance hopefully) I swear I will be the spokesperson of my locality, because I will march into all the orthotist's offices that wouldn't help me try this product out and show off my gait!
I got mine thru my local Hangar clinic. I went in for an appointment and told them I wanted this brace bc it goes outside the shoe (and the ones in the shoe exacerbate my nerve pain.) I LOVE this brace. And if they can manage to make a brace that would work with wedges or heels, I'd be in heaven.

If you're from the Philippines. There is an NGO that is giving this exact same product for free. They are called Akay ni Sol. They will not force you to vote for anybody. I had a stroke 4 years ago and they gave me one. It has been a big help with my walking.
Got this Right from the beginning I purchase my first one straight from Francois and it has been an awesome one perfect for long hours of hiking, garden work, house work I mean unbeatable feat this AFO can Do. I have been wearing AFOs for 36 yrs. I tried an Xtern the other day and couldn’t get my foot in it as my toes just wanted to buckle ( I have direct weak plantar flexion only)under and could not get foot in shoe at the angle. While the orthotist was making adjustments my AFO that was causing me bad pressure spots I decided somehow there must be a way to get it on? Since it was the testing model the Ushape detaches from the rest of it. I clipped the U shape to the shoelaces clip and put everything else on and then attaching the U shape into the holes after it was on the shoelace clip. It worked and what a feeling!! Like this lady said, I felt my thigh muscles engaging immediately. The spring in my step and lightness in my body was immediate. I could cry from happiness. I will get a fitting in the next 2 months and have one with an insert. I thank you so much for making all these lives better and I can’t wait to get this. 💚🙏😊Merci ! It’s so exciting to think of pain points not there and the energy flowing without the stuck. Yay!

I had the same problem, difficult to get the foot in. I’ve got sneakers now with laces and a tongue which I can open up wide to give a good landing strip for my toes/ foot to get into the shoe. Good luck mate 😀🍀
I was born with spina bifida and led a “normal” life. You would never know I had it because I ran, did sports, etc. Until I hit 30! I had a 2 lipomas which meant two major spinal surgeries and months later foot drop syndrome on both but my left was worse which needed another surgery on my knee due to a pinched nerve. I’ve had standard afo braces but they don’t provide the mobility I need. So I can’t wait to have the xtern braces to lean off my walker and be able to reach my full potential ❤️

Will this help someone with club foot? I walk on the other edge of my foot and the callous build up is constant .
My podiatrist said I am a walking on bone on the outer edge of my foot. I don’t want another surgery, I have had 3 triple arthosis surgeries in the past and want to find other options. My calf muscle is much smaller on this leg.
For me it is not about doing sports etc, it is just being able to walk pain free.

I have received my turn, and as with any new device, there are pros and cons, for this afo the con I'm running into is putting it on myself, it is difficult because my stroke left me with weakness on my left side the deficit from my stroke left me with footdrop & spasticity so I only have my right good side to try and put this on myself I wish it were easier for us but we would have to ask for help. Maybe that is something yall can improve on.

Is it possible for you to make an AFO that is not so high near the knee
Many different things are possible when making an AFO but they are usually made with the top being just below the neck of the fibula. They are made that height to have a higher lever arm.
It is probably not recommended by the company but the Turbo Med could be cut lower if based on your size you are not already on the lowest slot that is used to secure the calf cuff. You might lose some of the benefit by having a shorter lever arm. You might experience discomfort having a calf cuff lower than recommended with a Turbomed or any other AFO as well.
