How to modify sparkplug to increase spark

Side gapping spark plugs has been use in racing for years to increase horsepower by unshrouding the spark thus allowing the flame created to propagate faster resulting in a more complete burning of the fuel/air mix.
Many manufacturers offer plugs deemed racing plugs that are side gapped but at inflated costs.
By doing it yourself you can use a cheap plug to save money and increase horsepower.

I like how he didn't even show a test on them to prove that it even did anything. I also do not understand why you don't just gap them out further and call it a day since it is literally inside the most pressurized part of the engine but what do I know I am a professional mechanic.

I went ahead and snipped an iridium NGK plug, an old spare with a weaker spark than it's copper brother so a deserved sacrifice it being less, not more durable . Well now it showed it's brilliant direct zap again but what about under pressure ? Yes it matters , the bike that was missing badly after 30 km/h was cured . Your a professional and it's never the spark plug ? When there are no paying customers you have the luxury of being stupid , the plug won't be reliable they say but i was pissed off and will be pushing it home soon as per usually . lol

Side gapping is fine, but never strike a plug like that or you may cause internal damage to the porcelain.

Yeah those sharp edges are nono detonation point , I also use this method but carefully smooth edges , the tip easily damaged also 👍

it is called side gap spark plug. actually, ngk already make a version of that kind of thing that intended for direct injection engines (since conventional vertical gap might cause premature fouling on direct injections).

Nah they will perform better but only for a few months then they will stop sparking altogether. But if you are racing and changing out your sparkplugs every weekend then who cares.

@schmittie123 When sparkplugs wear, the top bit of rolled over metal disintegrates from the tip to the base. By chopping off a few mm of your sparkplug then gapping it, you have that much less sparkplug lifespan. However, you also have that much less sparkplug in the way of the path of combustion. Does it make any performance benefit at all? Probably not. Does it take a sparkplug that should last for 5 years and now only lasts for 1? Yes. Does that matter for racing? No.
