Great video just missing one key part that could cost nearly as much as the short block. Head work. Head refresh, or upgrading valves and valve springs, and most importantly valve lashing.
So yes, that was on the quote. And I realized I had filmed a part where I mentioned that, but didn’t realize till I had pretty much finished the vid. It was done and was factored into the final cost.
Oh man, I am right here, sooner than expected - like everyone else. I'm going IAG750 build, all the oil upgrades, cylinder4, AOS, etc. Do you have any updates to this video? Things you wish you did while in there? I'll be dropping it in most likely, so any insights you have after a year would be really helpful
8k for my P2P closed deck longblock local brand new. Ported heads closed deck. 2k for new turbo. 3k for STI swap. Labor so far is 2,500. At 8,900 not including cost of engine. Car was previously FBO too can’t remember what I spent on that. Maybe another 6-9k lol. All for maybe 480-490whp I hope because of no port :c that’s another 3-4k lol
For anyone looking to replace your TOB, look for a kit that has a stainless steel sleeve that goes over the snout with included TOB. The way the transmissions are manufactured you cannot replace just the snout… And aluminum is obviously way softer than stainless.
Ok I paid 20k for my IAG stage 3 extreme short block, stage 4 heads and cams for my long block entirely built by IAG. Not advised but a call to build custom long block. She's paired with an ETS 6466 kit, MoTec, STI trans swap, dccdpro, custom PTFE fuel lines adding port injection and the list goes on. The 3 year build cost me 100k including the car in the factory. She put down 740hp by JR on a mustang Dyno. Can I recommend, fuck no, is she fun and Hot mess, yes. Do I like my VB more? Absolutely. Lets talk about turbo slap at 4k. I need to start a hit mess WRX channel to not target more than 500hp WRX builds.
Hey brotha I have the same IAG block went with stage 2... wanted stage 2.5 but I'm only looking to do FBO and FP Blue turbo. Any intentions of upgrading your turbo now?
@austinfromtexas why?! What happened? Brotha... since I've started going harder on modding... its been in the shop so much! Now my turbo leaking so I have to buy a replacement. I'm thinking FP blue... have you heard anything about it? And the boost labs turbo... what's it rated for?
$18K for 400hp.? IAG sells a fully built long block for $9K that’s 600whp capable. Did you buy some fancy 3 piece wheels and insane air suspension or something?
@@JoseLopez-dv5rk My protune was $700, injectors are less than $600 for 1050cc. FMIC is under $1500. Clutch is under $1500. All in all IAG 600, fmic, twin disk clutch, injectors, fuel system, protune, etc would all be under $15K.
Bro those numbers are off!!!im at 3+ with stock motor and full exhaust + a few other things so you definitely need to strangle whoever charged you 18k for 400hp!!!! Immediately!!!!

I mean, based on the info you gave me, it seems solid. 5k for labor on install seems ok. But I don’t see the price of the car itself in your comment anywhere. I’m also not sure if you copy and pasted this from a marketplace ad or wtf is going on
Like many people say, a lot of money for very little power. at what point does one decide that it is best to use that money and put it down for a m2 or something else. I love my wrx but some times it makes me hate it. I am currently stock and I want to save to tune it up but having a hard time deciding whether it is best to do bolts ons till it blows up and then built or just built now with less bolts ons
I am having a hard time with what you are saying making sense... because you need so many supporting modifications to get anywhere. Air intake, TMIC or FMIC, Bigger turbo, Injectors, gauges, 4 bar map seor, air oil separator, radiator, header, downpipe, exhaust, fuel pump, Cobb access port, clutch... To start, Cobb access port with staged tune, intake, exhaust. That could set you back $2500. Ifbyou rush into the power, you could easily get over your head and wreck it... best to become an expert at 325 WHP before going to 375, the. 425, then 500... I am moving towards the 500 WHP area. I would never let you drive it if you only drove a stock WRX or STi... it takes time to learn it and push it and live to see another day. I've sat in my car many times glad that I was alive when parking it... thanking my car for not killing me...
Ive thought about building my Wrx over the years of ownership..... I love this car..but its gonna be a no from me dawg 🤣 the cost to benefit ratio makes absolutely no sense. Hate to say it.
2015 wrx black just like yours. Mine blew and i had my tuner do the stage 2.5 closed deck short block from iag. Forced performance blue turbo. Ets front mount intercooler. Iag aos. Clutchmasters clutch couple other little things Nd total was 18,000. When said and done. 91 octane conservative tune as i dont wanna go through this again lol. 385hp but i dont remember the torque.
18k for 380hp dam. I been running 400 for 2 years on stock block and just now looking for a shortblock because I am just bored and need something to do lol.
Is it cheaper to build your short block before it pops or buy a iag short block? I’m planning on building my car within the next year or so. I don’t see a need for a closed deck with the hp goal I have.
What's your power goal? Probably cheaper to just drop in some forged pistons. Short blocks can be as low or high as you want it to be, depending on the power limit.
@@hhaste I’m looking for around 400 I talked to my turner and he said for the cost of building my block. I could just get a sti get a bigger turbo and flex fuel kit. He said a sti is just a better platform.
2015 STI stock block
$1200 Cobb 20g turbo
$100 turbo blanket
$1200 killer b headers
$500 1050 injectors
$120 340 fuel pump
$1000 q300 Catback
$600 ETS TMIC
$300 Koyo radiator
$300 IAG AOS
$250 Cobb up pipe
$300 killer b hard inlet
$300 Cobb intake
$120 IAG oil pick up
$100 Grimspeed 3 port
$80 cylinder four cooling mod
$100 VSC radiator hoses
$100 04 STI regulator
360whp on pump gas on stock downpipe
Gotta love the Subaru horsepower tax
$6700 for 360whp is extremely painful... wow lol Also, im sure it would be a lot closer to 400whp if it was 93oct with a 3" downpipe. ........right?
Thanks for dropping this gem. Time for me to go visit auto science.
They do great work!
Good to know thanks for the video

If you install yourself, and have all the right tools, definitely seems like it would be money saved.

How about valve seals? Did you go with oem or something else? I know once you start adding more boost to the fa it will be a weak point.
Pretty certain they are OEM. But that is good to know since I am getting some oil vape clouds on warm starts.
Yup. Change them sooner than later. Oil build up caused a hot spot and melted down a cylinder. Doing a rebuild now.
