  • We had to rebuild the subaru fa20dit that came in our broken WRX with a spun connecting rod bearing. We took some professional advice and decided to tackle the rebuild ourselves and were totally surprised by the total cost of a standard rebuild for this subaru FA20dit

Those FA20s use a special fast set RTV for assembly. Available from Subaru. And it's depending how bad the spun bearing is determine if the bottom end is reusable. Those stock bearing in FA20s rather suck. Which is I believe their Achilles heal. If you rebuild you want aftermarket bearings with improved oil flow design, like King XPG. 👍

Haha it's a Subaru, there's gotta be an Achilles heel 😆

Well done, worth a sub! I share your frustration about the Subaru manual. Very hard to find stuff, and the English translation is weak. How much does an uninstalled new Subaru long block crate engine cost from the dealer?

Not sure about the cost of a long block, but our short block was $2300

I'm not for sure why they would tell you to not rebuild the block I spun her rod bearing on my FA 20 no fuel pump failure or anything like that and it did the exact same thing metal through the whole thing shoot up my cam carrier cams etc. Iris literally replaced every single part and sensor really besides the block itself. I had my block machined by MAP performance I made a deal with them on building my motor My block was fine still om spec on the walls but I did have it bored out a little bit also had it closed decked with CSS machining basically drilling specific holes and passages so the block can get coolant through it and keep it cool since it's fused together. Had head games pocket port my heads new crankshaft manly pistons and trailer tough broad King XPG bearings the whole nine yards plus every fuel system upgrade basically any bolt on Plex TG EGR deletes turbo front mount grimm speed intercooler and a list goes on and on. With me doing dork myself besides having the short block machined and my head's done I'm in that motor for in the upper 20,000 range so if you guys are looking to actually build a high horsepower built FA 20 plan on having deep pockets especially if you're going to pay somebody to do it I couldn't imagine what that cost would be. My setup right now is 600 awhp set up then this winter going to get what I need for Port injection and possibly go to a radium dual low pressure fuel pump and go for the 7750 area. Frost plugs are also weak point on it The rods himself are known for bending about 350 will horsepowers with the factory rods are good for. And then breaking them in there's a definitely a special way to break them in they're not like normal other cars they're just different animals in general but if you got the money to play we can have a fun car that makes a lot of jaws drop at the same time you could have bought a 60-70,000 car after the price of your car and the rebuild lol

do not be afraid to rebuild the blocks or good gears if its not been hot i bet that's were the to me myth is coming from is folks slamming them together with out using their f heads and checking stuff .i have seen it on a 4.7l jeep v8 rebuild.and when like in 7mge engine have location specific bearing sizes. but that goes away with a turned crankshaft

So this is speaking from an uneducated perspective but would there be a possibility of using an engine washing machine for the cleaning of metal shavings to reduce costs or is there still to high of a risk involved?

Man! I’ve been watching your channel for almost 10 years… It’s hard for me to believe that you don’t have at least 100k subscribers. Your content has been more enlightening and entertaining than any other dime-a-dozen hot boi RUclipsr, the algorithm has done you wrong and you guys have stuck with it. There is something noble about that. Keep trekking.

good video thanks i like subaru engines i would like to cram a h6 say 2006 year into a baja with a manual trans.. teens of thousands lol its an engine wow just funny to me on how those numbers .titanium valves custom what being facetious and serious a mean if the block is good not heat wraped and even then be a great reason to swap in a h6 turbo but that has it own issues in no donor car but if one has a doner car seems logical

i wish i had the ability to work on these engines over and over again so I could just make it a viable niche profession like subi performance, but... there's no way to self-teach this it seems without spending big bucks each time along the way.

need some advice: i got a 2015 xt touring with ~97Kmiles and not even 10 yrs old.Ive had 2 transmission replacements under warenty already the car missfires and throws p0304 when they scoped the cylinder they saw burnt cracked valve. What should i do? sell it? the car is in really good condition other than the misfire. I don't run the car hard and do my normal maintenance with high qualify mobile1 and only use shell91. stealership wants 4k to just drop the engine no parts and labor. SoA not geting back to me.

    • @PoorManMods

That is a really tough call that really only you can decide what to do
I would imagine a shop is probably going to charge you $10,000 to replace that valve all said and done. Whether they repair the valve or just replace your engine, they're probably going to charge you at least 10 grand.
You just have to decide if $10,000 or whatever they charge you is worth keeping a vehicle or if you should cut your losses and get something else

Cheapest route is to just get a used salvage engine complete with warranty

    • @PoorManMods
      @PoorManMods  4 месяца назад

I would never ever trust a salvage Subaru engine, even if it has a warranty, it's still a world of pain if you install it and it's bad.

@@PoorManMods Either way it's a risk even with rebuilding the engine, Somethings not done right the engine could have issues right off the bat or shortly down the road, cost effective way is a used complete engine money wise from a place you trust.
