I love jam jar salads. I made one last week that was tomatoes, yellow pepper, grated carrot, buckwheat, broccoli, raw spinach and pumpkin seeds, with just some balsamic vinegar as the dressing. For everyone wondering how to eat them, I usually shake mine and pour it into a bowl.
My favorite combo is: Couscous, for the dressing plain olive oil, olives, feta cheese, for the fruit some pear, and the rest is iceberg lettuce, delish 👌🏻
Yay, a great idea, Jamie! And for those who say this isn't going to take three minutes -- alright, true, but you can also do a lot of it the day before, then just toss everything in right before you go -- and that'd be three minutes prep, right there! (If that's the case though, I suggest you put the dressing in first, then the hardier vegetables or fruits, then nuts or seeds, then everything else. And oh, if you don't want to eat from the jar, then have a bowl ready at work to upend the whole thing in ... in which case the jar would just be your mode of transportation, so to speak.)
What a great video, an awesome addition to anyones routine. And here is a Greek suggestion, starting from the bottom up as you would with the jar: -Couscous -Purslane, tomato & cucumber salad -Onion cut into rings -Red wine vinegrete -Crumbled feta -Fresh mint/basil/oregano leaves splashed with olive oil -Finished with a traditional Cretan barley dakos(ντάκος)
Then he should start to think like a normal human and not like a celebrity. People who go to work don't have time for doing this, also almost everytime there are too many fresh ingredients which will rot if there aren't 20 people eating them before. Plus, for me, as someone who has to live with around 300$ a month, cooking is impossible cause it's too expensive. Potatos, noodles and bread are my best friend, even if I totally want to live healthier. Maybe I should try grass smoothies...
Back when I had salads for lunch on a daily basis, I used to take my them with me in a mason jar all the time. Spinach, lettuce, bell pepper and some grated carrots with some fish or cajun chicken on top were my favorites. This video has made me want to go out and make them again. And if your jar is big enough, all you have to do is shake it up a few times and then you can eat it straight from the jar. I love it.
Great idea! I could imagine a japanese style one or a mexican inspired one. The japanese with whole grain rice at the bottom, some daikon, spinach, grilled salmon, maybe wakame and edamame/beansprouts on top for the crunch + sesame seeds. The dressing would be just some sesame seed oil (roasted?), rice vinegar, soy sauce/ponzu, garlic+ginger and some crushed sesame seeds. For the mexican; some Quinoa or some kind of beans at the bottom, fresh iceberg, tomatoes and grilled peppers, maybe corn, some poched and pulled appart chicken breast (seasoned with cumin etc.) or maybe some seasoned and fried minced beef, fresh coriander with a few slices of chili and crumbled tortilla chips/peanuts on top. Take some lime juice, yoghurt and olive oil for the dressing with oregano and spices to bring it all together.
Yea, 3 minutes my ass. If you have someone who will prepare all the ingredients for you on the table, cook the beef and barley, and then clean and wash up after you're done stuffing everything into a jar. For the rest of us, this is a 1 hour job, not counting in the time it takes to go out and buy all this stuff.
+derbigpr500 well you are shopping for groceries anyway, aren't you? you wouldn't go out just to buy those ingridients for that specific salad. so you can't count that. I would say this is a 10min job, and you can easily to 2 batches in pretty much the same time, take one with you, keep one in the fridge
+Stefan Perunicic I know that, that's why I wrote the comment in the first place. It's like saying "it takes me 2 minutes to prepare this amazing steak dinner", and then I show you a video where I cut an already cooked and rested steak into slices and serve it on a plate next to already cooked potatoes.
Love it, I also do a Japanese soup jars with, ramen, udon, saba noodles, veg, miso and chicken bouillon paste -add fresh ginger and whatever fresh herbs you like on top. Put the kettle to boil at work, pour, seal with lid 3-4 mins and its fabulous!
what I like: salad, cucumber, tomatoes, greek yoghurt, cashew nuts or sesame, chicken slices, lots of pepper, some salt, half a squeezed lemon. I always take an apple, but I fail at adding tasty carbohydrates because I don't like cold pasta or rice. So instead, I bring a self-made cereal bar.
I work outside my home 5 days a week, and always pack a homemade lunch. I have tried many different combinations of this salad in a jar and I love it, it travels well and is perfect for my lunch break, thanks for this salad dressing tip Jamie, going to give this a go :)
brown rice--pumpkin--baby spinach--tomato--seared tuna---basil/Italian seasoning--balsamic vinegar--dijon mustard--flaxseed---strawberry(if fruit is a must)
OMG! I made something like that this week! It was rice with Katsu curry sauce over the top, then breaded chicken breast, chopped into strips, with a carrot and cabbage slaw on top! This salad idea is alright, but I have been using tall Tupperware boxes to make lunch look more interesting. Makes normal leftovers look much nicer and more appetising.
My favorite combo: boiled egg, cured salmon, cucumber, iceberg salad with the simplest dressing: olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. For less calories just use shrmps instead of salmon. Sometimes I add avocado to the mix,
the point of the mason jars is so you cqn pre prep your salads. and keep them well sealed. when you're ready to eat it grab your pre prepped salad and chuck it in a bowl. it's make things easier and prepared beforehand. you're not meant to eat out of the mason jat.
+Madhatter Cryss You could pre-prep a salad with Tupperware. There is no advantage to doing it this way except the slight advantage that the Mason jar seals a little better.
+vegnewb The idea is the mason jar will keep the layers separate until you shake it to serve. You can't do that with tupperware unless it's tupperware that's shaped like a mason jar.
My favorite combination is: Little whole wheat rotini pasta Avacado Herb Ranch or Garlic/dijon vinaigrette Shredded butter lettuce Heirloom cherry tomatoes Seared tuna Hard boiled egg whites Dried cranberries Slice almonds Protein packed and super delicious. Oh and by the way chef I hit 54 lbs on my weight loss journey today. Sending you lots of love as always and your book cant get here fast enough. :-) chat soon
These look so good. I'll probably go for a greek style salad--spinach, olives, tzatziki, tomatoes, feta, etc. what should I use for grain? Maybe couscous? Pilaf?
Food inspiring, super healthy, colorful, delicious, fiber, carbohydrates, protein and balanced vitamins, all within a glass jar in less than 15 minutes ready to take to work in an easy to make and fun lunch box that will let you well with his health and his colleagues mouth water! Thanks for sharing these great ideas +Jamie!
Hi Jamie, I have watched you keep on cooking with your heart for many years, and trying to help others so often. I'm a vegan and I like your ideas, cos you love preparing food. Just keep doing it with your great big heart. Many Blessings to you and yours mate.
Hi Jamie i've found great salad just by what i had in the kitchen. that was brown rice and quinoa, sweet potato, avocado, baby spinach and chicken thighs with sauce (my creative thinking and i didn't have much food) tablespoon of Chilli con carne mix (from a packet)and coconut milk.
You know... I just noticed that Jamie used a tablespoon to measure an actual tablespoon of olive oil. I don't think there's ever been an actual tablespoon of olive oil in a Jamie recipe ever
Awesome idea! Here's my version with a bit of Chinese twist. Toasted Oats - Sesame Oil + Soy Sauce + ShaoXing Wine + Honey + Almond Butter - Red Cabbage + Cabbage + Carrot - Lightly Seared Tofu
+Ivo Temelkov Here's a trick: you put a smaller, round, empty plastic recipient inside the jar, that fits nicely right on top of the salad. That would prevent the salad from mixing ahead of time and, when removed, it'd give you extra space to mix, shake and roll.
Ooouu, it's a tough one. I would probably go with quinoa, a yoghurt dressing with garlic, broccoli, quorn bits, sugar snaps and cashews. And spinach for sure!
when you tip it out onto a plate it then mixes. The dressing goes through everything. They taste amazing and you put what ever you like in as long as the order is correct
If you've watched his knife tutorials, he uses his knuckles to guide his knife so he doesn't have to worry about chopping off his fingers while chopping.
Wholegrain pasta + mustard/oil/balsamic dressing + Raw fennel + zuccini w. Mint + romiane salat + cooked chicken thigh w. Basil + toasted pinenuts and Maybe some feta
This looks amazing! I think the point of the jar is for travel and then you can tip it into a bowl or onto a plate. Not that hard people. :D I would looove to make one with spinach, pine nuts, pumpkin, a bit of lean chicken breast, balsamic, and cous cous. Yummm!
That's was very easy to do, great combination of vitamin supplements,. So tempting to eat bec of the color combinations. Thanks chef great simple recipe for salad dressing.. Too
I make these for lunch. My god do i get office envy (the books description does forewarn this). After you get the hang of it you can get creative and do your own and use up any left overs you have.
That looks sooo good when jamie oliver cooks. He is so authentic and that is responsible for his success.
I love jam jar salads. I made one last week that was tomatoes, yellow pepper, grated carrot, buckwheat, broccoli, raw spinach and pumpkin seeds, with just some balsamic vinegar as the dressing.

👌🏻
Yummm will try this thank you so much
Can't get enough of jar salads!
Where is the recipe in print?
Hi Donal!!

Love this! Just though of one:
quinoa

dressing: a lemon/stone ground mustard vinaigrette
baby arugula
mixed greens (dandelion leaves, red leaf lettuce, frisee, and romaine)
olive oil poached Pacific salmon
baby spinach
toasted almonds
p.s. can you tell I'm Californian? I totally gave it away :)
Sounds delcious! And a little fancy. :p
Lol, yeah. It does sound a little fancy!
Leave salmon out and perfection
Jamie is doing everything for the people! he want as to be healthy and happy, so lets be it! and let's make Jamie happy to! Great guy! love him!

thank you so much for saying that now i hav ideas
Southwest style - baked black beans, grilled veggies and protein , lettuce, salsa, guacamole
fresh finger lime & horse radish makes for a super delicious dressing - my new obsession!!

+derbigpr500 I agree. Pearl barley takes ages to cook.
+derbigpr500 I think he meant 3 minutes after the barley and the beef has been prepared...
+Stefan Perunicic Yes obviously, but it's not true when he says it takes 3 minutes to prepare
Awesome! I have decided to use this idea for get togethers. I have several jam jars, gonna use all your ideas for 'bring a dish' events.
YUM! 🙌
Great ideas for healthy picnics as well!
i just made it it tastes really good thank you for the tutorial i had carrot, cucumber, letteis, rise and apple
Ahh amazing, what a clever idea, we must try something like this on our channel.
what I like: salad, cucumber, tomatoes, greek yoghurt, cashew nuts or sesame, chicken slices, lots of pepper, some salt, half a squeezed lemon. I always take an apple, but I fail at adding tasty carbohydrates because I don't like cold pasta or rice. So instead, I bring a self-made cereal bar.
The idea is ok, but I LOVE the way in which he describes and presents it, so passionate!
it looks like one jar meal really nutritious and tasty
I work outside my home 5 days a week, and always pack a homemade lunch. I have tried many different combinations of this salad in a jar and I love it, it travels well and is perfect for my lunch break, thanks for this salad dressing tip Jamie, going to give this a go :)
I like to put some cereal then as my dressing I use milk.. cant forget to top with some sugar !! Absolutely delish.

salmon is just as low in cals as shrimps x

Don't want to do it this way. Then don't. Simple as that.

I like garbanzo beans, feta cheese, spinach, grilled chicken and tomatoes. So good!
@windwalker234 In the garbanzo beans.
These look so good. I'll probably go for a greek style salad--spinach, olives, tzatziki, tomatoes, feta, etc. what should I use for grain? Maybe couscous? Pilaf?
I love a roasted sweet potato (tosted with cumin), lentils, spinach, grated carrot and feta, and often some leftover chicken goes in too.
I like kale and all green salad making. New at jar thighs.
Arugula, green apple, quinoa, almond, parmigiana, balsamic vinegar sauce 👌

Pearl barley is refined (the hull and bran are removed) so it is absorbed quickly by the body like white flour or white rice.
Awesome idea! Here's my version with a bit of Chinese twist. Toasted Oats - Sesame Oil + Soy Sauce + ShaoXing Wine + Honey + Almond Butter - Red Cabbage + Cabbage + Carrot - Lightly Seared Tofu
Wallnuts&blackberries&goat cheese. Oh-my-god, so goood!
Also some roasted foie gras and orange glaze work surprisingly well in a salad!
Seriously, how do you eat this? NO SNOBS ALLOWED, just serious answers!
+Ivo Temelkov Im pretty sure that youre meant to pour it on to a bowl or plate, somthing like that :)
Thanks, guys! That was my guess as well but then I though "You're an idiot, Ivo, so better ask around".
***** Honestly at first I was wondering how to eat it as well, so you're not alone hahaha
No you're right. Just use a square tupperware.... Then again it won't look as cool as a jam jar so NVM
+Ivo Temelkov Here's a trick: you put a smaller, round, empty plastic recipient inside the jar, that fits nicely right on top of the salad. That would prevent the salad from mixing ahead of time and, when removed, it'd give you extra space to mix, shake and roll.
So how are supposed to eat that Jamie?.... Love it
Ok thanks jamie 🇹🇹👊🏾
fresh, and lovely salads 😍
Ooouu, it's a tough one. I would probably go with quinoa, a yoghurt dressing with garlic, broccoli, quorn bits, sugar snaps and cashews. And spinach for sure!
What a brilliant idea! I love this, can't wait to try!
Ah yes! What a great idea - good to see it start to finish here and really inspiring for exciting healthy lunches!! Wicked! Will be giving one a try!
Pizza Jam Jar please.
+Jam Jar YESSSS!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHA Everytime i was searching ur channel this video was one of the vids below ur channel, and u even responded to it XDD
Love this idea
So how you actually eat it, you have to mix it, right? So you need a bowl? It does look feisty and lovely and I like that you have all that you need.
fab idea
This looks so delicious!
Thank you for yummy ideas for Lunches!!
I make these everyday for my work lunches so easy
And how do you mix everything together in this jar?
when you tip it out onto a plate it then mixes. The dressing goes through everything. They taste amazing and you put what ever you like in as long as the order is correct
I love pasta with sundries tomato dressing, rocket, ham, (can also add peas or peashoots) and pine nuts sprinkled on top :)
how can this be eatean? directly from the jar? putting all in a plate so the carb will be on the top? or do I need to mix in the plate?
This is so much going to save me in uni.
Did it work for you?
Chickpeas, hummus, sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil, spinach, peppers, chili, grilled chicken + Greek yogurt dressing :)
Jamie I like a combination of basil, coriander and mint with romaine lettuce with blue cheese and balsamic dressing
beautiful idea 😍😍😍😍

Looks so good man
Brown rice>beets+carrots> fat free yogurt+pickled mango dressing>spinach+coriander+mint>grilled chicken>soft boiled eggs> spicy roasted peanuts.
Did anyone notice at 1:30 that he was chopping the beetroot without looking!!?? 😱😱😱 woah
If you've watched his knife tutorials, he uses his knuckles to guide his knife so he doesn't have to worry about chopping off his fingers while chopping.
Great idea! Especially now that we are heading into Summer soon here in Australia. Thanks Jamie :D
Plain white rice>sauteed mushroom>iceberg lettuce+carrot>chicken strips mixed with sriracha sauce>sauteed mushroom>iceberg lettuce+carrot

Love it! Thank you ⛳️
I make these for lunch. My god do i get office envy (the books description does forewarn this). After you get the hang of it you can get creative and do your own and use up any left overs you have.
it looks amazing & i like the idea but..how do you eat it? if you eat it straight from the jar you won't get the dressing until is too late...
Best idea
Damn!!! Need a video on how to eat it without spilling it all over the table & enjoy the taste of the salad in entirety
Question if at work would you just tip the contents out into a bowl or eat direct from jar?
Nice. Thank you, Jamie!
Woww perfect timing
Oh, God. You did it again, Jamie.
I’m making them at school
