    now that is one hell of a clean 2.8

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  13 лет назад

    @sweetd69 Thanks, my cam choice was based on emissions considerations. My bro. built a 2.8 with the cam you mentioned from Crane. He liked it so much he named his son Matthew Crane. I have to rely on my port work, and I have plenty of flow, to make up for less duration and lift. Plus I can only run the 2SE carb. I had to drill the main jet, and air bleeds to get this combo to work, and pass sniffer/visual emissions laws.Thanks for your comments!

    @leegmc1985 Ok thanks ill make sure and check the cooler and the lines that go to the trans to make sure they are working right and yes breaking in the cam is the first thing we do when we fire up the engine and we lubed all the lobes on the cam when installing it that way we dont damage anything in side the block or the cam

    Very nice looking 2.8 i have 85 camaro with 2.8 that i am rebuilding right now new crankshaft new pistons new stage 2 cam new timing chain and am just wanting on the heads to get rebuild Where did u get your headers from? i am looking for a set for my camaro but i am not having any luck

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  14 лет назад

    @COBRAKR500 thanks. Yes its very hard to find headers for our 1st gen 2.8. I just happen to have the very last set Pacesetter made for my Jimmy. Did you look at my other vids? Take a look, maybe you get some ideas.Anyway go to Amazon or ebay and punck in the following, 70-1206 or 70c-1206 Armor coat. Use Fel-pro #1449 gaskets, or permetex copper silicone to seal them up. They dont come with bolts. I used stainless steel allen head bolts. Good luck w/your build!!

    @COBRAKR500 Oh Ok i dont think he put the 3.1 crank i think he went with size as the stock one and everything in the engine right now i am just wating on the heads to be done and also wating on the headers to complete hole engine rebuild and i hope i hit those number when its done and get some nice mpg out of it cuz my 07 mustang gt waste alot of gas after the mods i done to it so thats why i got the camaro to save me on gas and get me around

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  14 лет назад

    @COBRAKR500 YES, try TCI, part of the Comp group. But unless you have a CAM with over 260 degree advertised duration, you dont need a higher "stall". You should have a small bellhousing 700R4 mounted to your 2.8. My Jimmy with the COMP 260H drives just fine in traffic, with a shift kit. But my converter is a stock lock-up unit. You might consider a "helper" trans oil cooler, but make sure you retain your factory radiator oil cooler, or you will be buying a new trans in short order!

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  13 лет назад

    @foxracing1008 I get about 16 mpg combined driving. In town driving seems to be the same. Highway i get quite a bit less(20mi less per tank compared to stock). The cam really likes 65-70 mph, and i do have 3.73
    gears w/700r4 trans. so that may be the loss of fuel economy.

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  14 лет назад

    @COBRAKR500 Ok, a little preaching. MOST people severly neglect their cooling systems in there cars, the coolant it self(not ever changing it), never backflushing the system, etc. Because your motor is fresh your engine needs nothing, but make certian that the RADIATOR is clean, and not plugged up inside, outside that the FINS are clear and not full of bug guts and other debris. You should have no problems overheating if everything is in order.

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  13 лет назад

    @SuperCaveman86 You might want to verify that you have the right balancer. I did not go with a front drive 3,1L
    crank, as you refer to as a stroker crank. I did build a large journal short block w/ 1.5mm over bore, and hyper huetectic pistons, but the stroke is 2.99in. Yes my heads are heavily modified and mid/top end is awesome
    with the COMP 260H cam and top end components. GM 60 degrees are not known for vibrations or shakes so i will do a litte research, try to help you out. good luck

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  14 лет назад

    @COBRAKR500 Oh, because of that up hill climbing, the trans cooler inline with the factory unit would be a very good idea, but not a must. Oh, make dam sure you break
    in the cam correctly, and use Comp cams p/n 159, or GM E.O.S(engine oil suppliment). Modern oils have very little extreme pressure additives due to EPA guide lines, which is fine for NEW cars because they have "roller cams", but older ones like ours "flat-tappet cams", You can also use DIESEL oil, Shell Rotella for break in .....

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  14 лет назад

    @COBRAKR500 Oh, the gm 2.8/173 doesnt like to "climb" hills because of their small displacement, and lack of low end torque. but you should be ok. You could swap out those 3.42 gears for some 3,73s. but wait and see.

  • @COBRAKR500
    @COBRAKR500 14 лет назад

    @leegmc1985 yeah thats what i heard they dnt like up hills and yes i am going to install 3.73 gears that a for sure ok so ill will try tci and see what they have available how much is a shift kit? I just hope ounce everything is done it will drive to bakersfield with no problems like over heating and will do well on the up hill they are not that step

  • @leegmc1985

    @sweetd69 Yep, i have had some internet problems myself, not computer related though. My bro. had that motor in a 77 chevy monza, the rare coupe one with a trunk, not the common lift backs. The car was plenty fast for the time. He ended up tearing the uni-body at the fire wall, too much torque. He then put the motor in an 85 s10 with a 5spd.Have a great week end, and 4th. Be safe.

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  14 лет назад

    @COBRAKR500 I belive you have a COMP 252H, which is a very good cam, and should work w/stk. F.I. , and pass emissions. I think you have a "s" code LB8 eng.
    the stk. spects. 135HP/165TQ. w/cam+headers=170HP/204TQ add the 3.1 crank
    & you should have 175HP/224TQ. Please note that you must use a "neutrally" balanced flywheel if you use the 3.1L crank. I think your pistons will work but check. Your rods will work for sure, but piston height might be a little different. The machinist will know.

    @COBRAKR500 Yea, the MSD p/n is 3172. Stay w/the stock injectors as they were also used on the HP Fiero GT w/no problem. You may buy a adjustable fuel pressure regulator if you end up lean, but wait and see. If you will be using a CAT, then you dont want it to lean, as you will burn it up. Dont buy the the Platinum/iridium spark plug hype. Buy copper plugs, like AC R42TS or Autolight
    23. Consider in an MSD p/n 8226 coil, though as it will make a difference. Also, regular wires, will work fine.

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  13 лет назад

    @pinatacos My machinist. I belive they are CP hyperutectic units. I will have to look at my build sheet, and like everything is filed away. If i find the p/n's i will reply. thanks for your comments! you watch other vids, with engine running? pretty decent lope for a small duration cam.

    @seabreeze272 Sorry, please look at my reply above on as, the reply can only be a certian amount of characters.
    The colectors are slip fit, (cross over tube), and you must use SS band clamps like on semi trucks. NAPA has them. Also, These headers will only fit the 2wd Blazer/Jimmy with automatic trans. The s-truck frame is different.

    @leegmc1985 Well my mechanic is the one that installed the cam its stage 2 cam from cams competition ill find out specs from him and let u know so i could of drop in a 3.1 crank in my engine i didnt know that and my camaro is fuel injected but i told my guy i wanted performance pistons and crankshaft timing chain intstalled to make it more powerful what numbers do u think ill make after my engine is done? Oh i found some pacesetter headers for my camaro for 289.95 how your jimmy on gas?

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  13 лет назад

    HI, I left a comment on your channel. The A.I.R. tubes fit pretty good, but be prepared to bend the tubes slightly, to get them to line up. Also, the there is no taper to the opening, and thus, exhaust leaks slightly. not a big deal though, i used a product called INFERNO METAL REPAIR to seal the fittings, works great. On pass. side collector very close to belhousing. On drivers, very close to frame, and trans linkage hits if you put it into 1st gear.

    @leegmc1985 Where could i get a performnace torque converter for my auto transmission for my camaro? I am going to be doing alot trips from cali to bakersfield with it to visit my family and i want to make sure that it could handle going up the grape vine and up the hills with no problem

    @littleston101 the 260H is the biggest cam COMP makes for the GM 60 dregree V6. You can download dyno simulator software free from COMPs site, to explore things according to what you are looking for. Have you viewed my other vids to get an idea on what the 260H sounds like? because of head mods my TQ peak has raised to 4000 rpm and HP @ 6200. let me know the year, and weather you have auto or STD. trans.
    I will be able to assist you better.

    Yeah my car will need the cat on to pass smog i am in California and my teacher was telling me that iridum sparks plugs are the best that they last longer than the other type by any chance do u know what gear ration my camaro comes with? In the future i am going to put a 350 with 700R transmission

  • @COBRAKR500
    @COBRAKR500 14 лет назад

    @leegmc1985 Oh ok i though i might end up getting like 19 city and like 28 highway but those are ok number what fuel injectors should i use for my camaro also spark plugs i am going with msd wires if there is any available for my 2.8

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  14 лет назад

    @COBRAKR500 You should have a 3.42:1 axle ratio with a 5spd manuel, or a
    700r4 auto trans. Oh, stay with a stock, or stock style converter. dont buy a "high-flow"
    converter, as most are not effecient enough to pass stict emissions. Some years back I worked for the DEQ here(automotive division)and I saw many so called performance CATs fail. Oh, and the plug choice is yours to make. I personally only use either DENSO copper U groove, or BOSCH Platnium plus plugs. DO NOT use platnium w/ NITROUS

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  14 лет назад

    @COBRAKR500 I have a B&M shift improver kit that I really like, p/n 70239 should work for you. Check B&Ms converters also. Oh, and select "mode" 2 on the kit, i.e.
    "steet/strip" if you want firm shifts. Which ever mode you choose, you will have complete holding ability in any gear, and longer overall trans life! As I previously stated, I personally dont think you need a converter, but this kit is what I would do.
    Oh, the kit should be under $50 bucks! Be good.

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  13 лет назад

    @littleston101 COMP makes a 252H, but you will get very little lope if any. But all the cams they offer are from their HIGH ENERGY series and are designed for high torque, so if i were you id go for the 260 but let me know more info. I have allready broken my drivers side motor mount to give you an idea on the TQ i now have, belive me it makes a big difference. carb or f.i.?

  • @COBRAKR500
    @COBRAKR500 14 лет назад

    @leegmc1985 Ok thanks i will try that did u notice a big diffrence when u installed your headers on your jimmy? Are these motors pretty strong and fast?

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  14 лет назад

    @COBRAKR500 Well, my mpg loss is because of the uneven vacuum signal @ the carbureator. Yes, 85 s10s, and GMC Jimmys still had carbs. Because my cam has a
    lot of "overlap" that causes the engine to lope @ idle, and because most driving is on the idle/part throttle circuit of the carb, I get poor MPG. I have to fix by trial and error. Even the so called performance shops dont know what to do. I could easily fix the problem w/ a Weber 38/38 or a Holley 390cfm 4bl but they are not emissions
    legal

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  14 лет назад

    @COBRAKR500 I think you should get about 16mpg city, and 24mpg on the freeway
    Your computor should have enough "room" to self adjust for your mods. If not you can upgrade to a performance PROM, but fuel economy will suffer. If you need any help, let me know.

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  14 лет назад

    @COBRAKR500.
    most people hate the gm 60* v6, because in stock form are quite gutless. My eng.
    only had 110hp/160lbs, but now has190hp/200lbs w/the mods ive done. you could have put a 3.1 crank in your eng. if its a lrg. journal. that would have given you more HP/tq. 884 fiero heads will give you a little more top end. what are your cam spects? the headers alone will yeild you about 12-20HP. are you using a vara jet carb, or?

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  14 лет назад

    @COBRAKR500 Oh, my gas mileage sucks, but I am still getting the bugs out of my induction system. Your mileage should remain the same, or slightly improve. However, remember that a CAM and Headers will allow the engine to breathe, and move more air, thats what improves performance, and sometimes kills gas millage. Whatever crank you go with, you will "feel" the difference in your pedal, i.e. your foot! the large journal 60 degree v6 is very strong, ive seen them go 300k
    miles!

  • @leegmc1985
    @leegmc1985  14 лет назад

    @COBRAKR500 As i said iridium/or platnium plugs are a waste of money, and are not made for "performance engines". Your teacher is correct, the sole reason they are made is because they offer 100,000 mile tune ups. The BEST plugs are made out of SILVER, if you want to pay $35 each. Remember in science class they tought that copper & silver are very good conductors? iridium & platnium are very POOR conductors.

    • @leegmc1985

      One at a time bring each cylinder to TDC. Tighten the rocker nut, while turning the push rod back and forth, until you feel drag(difficult to turn) then turn the rocker nut 3/4 turn. There are other methods in service manuals. However, I have never had an issue on any 60 first gen using this method.

    I have an 87 s10 with a 252h comp cam, just wondering what springs are strong/good enough for this cam?

    • @leegmc1985
      @leegmc1985  9 лет назад

      Good replacement OEM springs should be fine, as lift is not that great. Nor will it make power over 4800rpm, so
      you shouldn't have to worry about valve float. However COMP recommends P/N 980-12. It may be cheaper to buy
      first gen Small block Chevy Z28 springs which are basically the same thing. Make certain you break in the cam correctly,
      and use either break in oil, or use COMP P/N 159 additive. For regular oil changes I would suggest a Diesel oil, or a
      high mileage type oil as most have more ZDDP. I use Shell Rotella T 15w-40. If you live in cold climate Shell Rotella T6
      is awesome. I use it in my motorcycle.
