Thanks for this! Especially about running the bigger cams with a computer. Am working on “stroking” an iron 2.8 up to 3.1, and plan on running the larger Comp Cams setup. Finding it very difficult to locate programming options for these older TBI engines, but you’re giving me hope that I’ll see some improvement without for now while I research options.
The GM 3.1 has a lot of potential for performance upgrades believe it or not my 90 Grand Prix after a full top half rebuild with all performance and bored 60 over with a stroker kit no turbo yet I'm pushing a little under 500hp. Wasn't cheap but very well worth it. If anyone has a 3.1 plenum that says intercooled turbo on it the original one that came with the 3.1 I would pay good money for it to be delivered
I swapped my valve and springs from the originals to the valve springs and rockers out of a 95 so that I could get the extra lift. Would I torque those down to the 3.1 original specs or the 3100 specs. And what would be a good cam I can’t seem to find any decent ones I would like a choppier one. The car is ran at higher rpm’s very very frequently as it’s a derby car motor
Is it possible to add 50+ actual streetable HP on the 2.8 with double roller timing chain, headers, up graded distributer, towing and RV CAM, flow bench the head (port match intake and exhaust ports, equlize valve stem heights, largest valves that will fit, 3 angle valve job, roller tip rockers new valve springs etc...)? Do they make a hydrolic roller cam for the 2.8? If the 2.8 can be made to run normally I would be willing to give it a try. Sounds like a $3-4K project.
I just picked up an 89’ 2.7 Z24 Cavalier I’d love to mod at least a bit to get even a bit more than 135. As my old Fiero made 149 from what’s essentially the same engine.
You will gain a little with better flowing exhaust and cold air intake... but most gains will come from internal upgrades like cylinder heads and a camshaft.
My 3.1 v6 in a 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix will run until it gets to operating temp and then spider misfire and stall out. Then it will not start for a while. I changed plugs n wires and camshaft position sensor and a coil pack but still same problem. Any ideas? I’m ready to sell the car because I’m so tired of nothing working.. some say a vacuum leak which could be but I don’t have equipment to figure it out.

Next time it won't start, try unplugging the coolant temperature sensor, and see if it will start for you! Or just put in a new sensor to rule it out, I don't think that they are too expensive!

I live in Poland and I have a Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1 LE from 1991. I would like to ask you about two things. There is oil collecting in my intake manifold, and the spark plugs are a strange color, they are not black, but the upper electrodes of the spark plug are white. When the engine is hot, it shakes slightly. Ignition coils, cables, plugs are new. I also installed a new timing chain. Compression on the cylinders is equal and amounts to 190 psi. When the engine is very hot and has been left for about 20 to 30 minutes, it runs erratically after starting. After 10 seconds it calms down and everything is fine. If my stop is shorter, for example 10 minutes, then everything is fine. Could this be a problem with the piston rings? I'm asking because after removing the PCV valve from the valve cover, the engine smokes a lot from this hole. If the valve is installed, everything is fine. I also checked the vacuum pressure on a warm engine. My meter read -17 inHg. I will be very grateful for any help. Greetings from Poland. Adam.
@modeverything1 Hello. I also replaced the ignition module, no difference :(( What should be the ignition advance angle at idle speed and a hot engine? I have another question about fuel injectors, because the original ones for the 3.1 LH0 engine have ...888 at the end of the serial number and I installed injectors from 2.8 engine, with the number ending ..536. After that you're moving into the engine with upgraded camshaft, cylinder heads, intake manifolds, throttle body...
After all of that you will want to look into getting the PCM recalibrated for the improvements. Even if you just do exhaust and air filter a performance chip/ecm recalibration would help!
@@modeverything1 how much power could it take with it all said and done? I also have a 2.8 V6 surprising I know
N/A with cam, ported iron heads, headers and throttle body upgrade you could probably get around 200 crank hp without going too crazy. If you went turbo you would be 240hp+. If you wanted to swap to 31/3400 heads and intakes you would pick up at least 25hp from the start before doing anything else!
@@modeverything1 I got a 1986 Pontiac Firebird with the 2.8 mpfi how much horsepower or faster I can make her run
Is it possible to put 3100 or 3400 heads on a 3.1?
Yes it is but requires a few things to be done in the swap like custom length push rods. I will be putting together a video explaining this swap soon!

Ay how can I make my 2.8 mpfi in my 1986 Pontiac Firebird faster
There are a few things you can do, just depends how much you want to spend. Check out the v6 section on thirdgen.org forms, you will find lots of information and can see what kind of results you can expect from certain mods! Hope this helps for now, I may try to do some videos on the iron head engines down the road.
those outdated tech engines even for the 90s, with push rods.. just gas guzzlers
Did you have a 2.8 or a 3.1?
@modeverything1 i had a cuttlas ciera 3.1 in mexico... gas is too expensive here in mexico,, had to sell it
These engines were great on gas when they came out in the 80/90's, but won't be as good as a newer modern 4cyl. I found that they do great on the highway, but not as good in the city.
