    Thanks for these videos, you seem well informed on these motors, and I was wondering: I have a 1987 L44 2.8 from a Fiero GT. I'm wondering if the factory crankshaft, if balanced and in good shape can handle high compression. 12:1 or 11:1, or is that too much for the factory crank? And how about the connecting rods?

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  2 года назад +1

      Yes both will handle more compression, but the RPM and HP is your limiting factor. Google "60degreev6 power manual" it has some great information on prepping the conecting rods and engine for more power and higher rpms!

      Only the exhaust manifolds from the 3500 would be an upgrade on a '99. On a 99 you can upgrade the throttle body, upgrade the cylinder heads and intakes to 3400's/2000+ 3100's.

    I have a 1994 3.4 Camaro, I've read that people swapped the heads and upper and lower intakes to the 3500/3400/3100 ones, however could i just swap to the 3500/3400/3100 plenum without changing anything else just to get the better airflow?

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  2 года назад

      Unfortunately you would need a 3100(large port)/3400/3500 lower intake to work with the 3500 plenum since the port spacing is different than the 3.4 Camaro. Also when using the 31/34/3500 lower intakes you will need the matching heads too!

    Since you know more about these than anybody I've run across I'm currently swapping the McLaren 3.1 into my 88 Z24 Cavalier my issue is my transmission mount which is the 282 Muncie sits pretty much where the turbo is is there a trick to this situation or do I have to have some sort of custom fabricated mount that would be a radically go under or around the turbo I'd like it to look Factory I've seen them online but they are very old threads that nobody will respond to I was just hoping maybe you have run across this in your travels thank you

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  3 года назад

      From what I remember guys used to modify the transmission mount bracket to fit the turbo in there. Its been a while since I have seen one! I'm thinking that you can trim out where you need clearance then box the bottom of the mount in to reinforce it. You may want to look into a gt28 turbo, from what I remember the stock one was too much on the small size to start with!

  • @jonathanfreedom1st

    Noticeably the 3100 has alittle more power and maybe torque , but very subtle. But the trade off is the notorious intake manifold gasket plague on 3100s. For this sadly the slightly underpowered 3.1 multiport is probably better by way of reliability

  • @Brock_Landers
    @Brock_Landers Месяц назад

    This is killing me, I REALLY would've loved to have fabricated a turbo kit and have some ARP head studs and MLS head gaskets for my 89 Beretta with a 2.8 because that's what killed it, head gaskets. It had ALOT of EGR issues as well. I would've seriously loved to have either swapped in an upgraded L67 with a 5 speed swap, or even just turbocharge the 2.8 with supporting mods and do a 5 speed swap to it. Those older 2.8s and 3.1s had good torque down low, but they didn't really last until the 3100 SFI came out. I had a 95 Corsica with 355k miles on it on the original engine and trans that I got for free with fusible link issues for the alternator.

When I did my intake plenum I ported in as far as I could reach with the tools I had. Then I cleaned up/gasket matched the outlets from the plenum. Another thing you can do is polyurethane fill your engine mounts like I did in another video. In my old cavalier I made a solid rear engine mount from a block of aluminum, it helped putting the power to the tires!

    Will a 2.8 carb Intake bolt to 3100 heads? if not will the heads swap onto the 3100 block. not looking for power per say, just have a 3100 on hand and want to use it to replace a 2.8 that's telling knock knock jokes. 3100 is from a 2003 Malibu, the 2.8 is from a 1st gen s10.

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  2 года назад

      The carb intake will not bolt up. You can bolt the heads on a 3100 block but you would need to measure pushrod length, and your compression would be very low ( less than 8.0:1). You could purchase a set of 1990-1992 Camaro pistons to get your compression back to stock.
      The left/driver side of the block has a different mount bolt pattern and no provisions for a mechanical fuel pump if you need one. My self I would use the complete 3100 and swap to fuel injection.

      Unfortunately your engine is an upgraded version of this one. Basically anything you can do to a 99-05 3400 Grand Am/Alero you can do to your 3100 Malibu, except for changing to 3500 heads. The larger throttle body, and pcm tuning will make a very nice improvement on your 3100!

      Not directly, you would need an adapter plate. I used one on my truck with the original 4l60e but I went to a Camaro 4l60e with the 60degreev6 pattern because I cracked 3 flex plates

    What do I need if I want to supercharger this engine, and how many pounds would it hold?

    • @modeverything1
      @modeverything1  2 года назад +2

      The only way to supercharge is to make brackets for a vortech/Paxton style centrifugal blowet or a custom LIM/plenum for a m90 style but that won't fit under the hood.
      As for how much boost that depends on engine condition and how good the tune is. I have seen someone put 18psi on a stock bottom end 3.1 before and it stayed together

      The Iron heads/intakes are the biggest restriction on the RWD 2.8, 3.1 and 3.4's. Headers are a good improvement for them along with a larger throttle body, aftermarket cam and porting the heads. If you're looking for the most power you will want to swap on 3400 aluminium heads/intakes!
