I know I’m commenting on this video super late but this is so clutch. I’ve been scouring the internet looking for an alternative instead of replacing the whole header seal. Just ordered the tubing! Thanks for having this video!
Really clever. I just went and bought the factory OEM replacement for the whole seal. But your concept will help me do the side window seals. My Rain Rail is perfect and it is draining freely. Happy. Thank you for your time and expert "makeshift" skill.
One tip to make the weaatherstrip slide easier inside the existing seal is to spray it with silicone oil - this will not only protect the rubber but makes it slippery so that it slides inside easier. I have a soft top and treat the seal regularly with silicone oil to keep it supple. This trick is good for all seals - trunk, roof, doors, hood. Don't put it on your windscreen wipers though :-) All the best, Rob in Switzerland. 2009 2.0 litre NC Sport soft top in True Red.
I know, I like it too. unfortunately ebay doesn't let me go far enough back in my purchase history. It was definitely purchased off of there though. Unfortunately just browsing today I can't find anything that matches the exact shape of this one.
🙌 Anytime! Yeah for sure - I feel like the hardtop was super finicky unless it was secured super tight/perfect alignment. Glad to report this water leak fix is still holding up too.
Great tip and thanks for that. Two questions : what size is the weather stripping you are using as I am in the UK and not sure where to get some and secondly, my leak problem seems to be on the rear window seal which looks as though part of it has been squashed at some point during opening and closing of the top, so will your method work on the rear seal? Thanks.
No problem! The stripping I used was .38inch or 9.652mm. I purchased mine on amazon here - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NL4DI7Y/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&psc=1&linkCode=sl1&tag=supercarmio-20&linkId=f55e7d8e13b2c0905be69062d8f13016
The method in the video may work for the rear window seal, but honestly have not had to try it. I would think you'd need to get a beefier size. They actually sell replacement seals for those areas, but they are kinda pricey, i.e - mossmiata.com/hardtop-seal-door-window-left Good luck!!
Got in MX5 this morning, arrived at work with a wet ass. It rains all the time in the UK and my hardtop has just started leaking this morning. Will be looking to do this mod asap. Is the weather strip that you put inside like a rubber tube?
Haha, terrible isn't it James? Yep that's exactly right! It will basically bolster the oem stripping where the hardtop meets the chassis. I'm happy to report 0 leaks thus far and it's been a really rainy season in Atlanta.
I think it should definitely help as it is beefing up the windshield side of the mating. Between the extra weather strip and adjusting the mounts, you should be good. 👍

Awesome, glad to hear it! gl with the install and thanks for watching :)
Just FYI, the brackets you showed are aftermarket. Attaching the top with stock latches is significantly different

Thank you for the very kind words! I am glad it helped you out. Happy to report that the Miata is still leak free 👍👍

what diameter was the tube you used? I understand for the side windows its about 5/8"
0.38" OD, here's the product on amazon -www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NL4DI7Y/
does this work for softcover?
