I love you beyond words. Just bought a 2006 nc and found this exact leak. Managed to catch it before the floor got soaked. The problem was exactly what you demonstrated in the video. This is the easiest tutorial I’ve followed, thank you very much ❤❤
I spent an hour this morning looking for the source of the leak in my wife's car, a 2009 model. I couldn't find any faulty seals or any signs of ingress round the doors or roof. So I did a search on the internet and your very helpful video came up. As soon as I looked under the dash on the passenger side I could see signs of rust, and a couple of drips of water confirmed it. Now sorted! Thanks for posting this video :)
Thanks very much, our MX5 kept getting condensation and I was blaming the roof. Just had it serviced and they mentioned as an advisory some plug hole needed fixing so I was going to get it done at some point. Then the starter wouldn't work so on checking the interior fuse box the floor was soaking ! I never realised as I don't use that side. Fixed the starter by changing the fuse in the engine compartment and stumbled across this video on this other problem ! I will sort it out. Bad design and not sure why that has not been included as a service item that needs checking and perhaps replacing. I noticed my garage must have looked at this because I now notice after your video they forgot to put the first screw black plastic cover back on. :)
Just done mine this afternoon after a few youtube videos and have to say you video was the most comprehensive and easy to follow. First MX5 only had it 3 weeks and this was the first job I've had to do but your video enabled me to do mine with confidence. I had ordered new ones rather than recycle the old as also came with the scuttle trim covers insets as advised they break easy, clip did break on one so it a good job I did. Thankfully didn't have dry carpet as caught early when spots of water appeared on the rubber mat in the foot well. Have been advised it's a good idea to do the one on the drivers side at the same time as the rubber on that is likely to be just as bad.
Thank you very much for this. Had mine 3 years and always been garaged and used on dry days as much as possible so never noticed a wet foot well. Had to look at the fuse box earlier and was shocked at all of the rust above it! Need to check whether it is old and fixed by a previous owner or if it needs doing. Brilliant step by step. Thank you!
First things to do when buying an older MK3/3.5..... Lift front sill plate & use a decent waterproof mastic around the two fastener clips. Great information. One caveat: I will be using butyl rubber sealant or dicor rv roof sealant instead of silicon because heat will eventually dry out the silicon and it will separate from the plastic piece. Butyl rubber or dicor will not, and should outlast the life of the car.
Mate thank you so much for this!!! I have been trying to figure this out for ages and was so confused. Thought it was coming in through the door seals somehow and this helped me narrow it down!!!!
Thanks so much for this! I had exactly the same problem, and stumbled upon your video. When I removed the clip, I could see that the foam gasket was completely perished. I ordered a replacement clip and cover from mx5parts as I didn't have any silicone. Took about 30 minutes from beginning to end to get everything sorted. Street parking, so no hairdryer for me, had to take it for a spin with the roof down and heating on full blast into the footwell instead. Dried out nicely either way. It was bucketing it down yesterday, and the passenger footwell was dry as a bone afterwards. Great video, thank you again!

We always argue and then get it done and make up ..... :D Of course the big question is of course ... why does the grommet on the drivers side not do the same ?

I've just followed your video and completed the job ..thank you so much for this ..luckily is was a slow drip in heavy storms and only collecting on the car mat , underneath the glove box area was a bit rusty though so I'm going to spray that with some protectant
I did this job a few weeks ago. Previous owner had attempted it but had done a really bad job. They had just stuck some silicone around and it had corroded the screw under the plastic cowl. Absolute nightmare getting it out! Finally managed and replaced all grommets and covers and water proofed with proper weather resistant silicone. Only issue is I think the fuse box has had some issue with corrosion in the past as I have some small electrical problems. Mainly my drivers side door sensor doesn't work. All else is working fine
As per previous comments I have now done the footwell plugs replacement if you have time its better to order new ones before replacement if you still need to silicone then you can but I did not also I spent only £6 including delivery for the 2 parts . But this video helped a lot would have been good to see how he took the other cover off on drivers side . But this was very helpful video
Thanks for this video.... It's a job that I need to get done after finding so much water in my first winter having my daughter's MX-5. I might cover the car for the rest of the winter spring 😊 I also believe I have a leak through the soft roof and or roof seals.... It's condensation all inside the roof, windscreen and also wet on the seat 😢
This is a great video nice work, wish all car repair videos were this clear. I will be recommending it on MX5 forums. Seems like you know the car really well but there is only this MX5 video? I was brought up in Leicestershire so spotted the accent straight away!
Well, changed the grommet both sides. Passenger side was easy - seal was broke in two. Drivers side - had to take the drivers side wiper off but managed to change the grommet without having to take the passenger side wiper off. All good - only issue was one of the little black covers snapped. Well tested with a hosepipe - no leaks anywhere.
Great information on how to do the repair, just slightly concerned about the silicone that you suggest on the link, the Dow 781 is a Acetoxy silicone which can cause metal to corrode!
Same thing I had to deal with. I would highly recommend you completely remove the seat and remove the carpet. Mold will start to grow in 24 hrs so it's very important to get it completely dry. You will have to cut the carpet at the rear of the console where it connects to other side that way you can completely remove the carpet so it will dry.
Very useful video for what should be a routine preventative maintenance on any NC MX-5 over 10 years. Notice that he doesn’t show how to do it on the driver’s side, where both wiper arms must be removed before the cowl trim can be removed. A little more complicated but it’s not a big deal.
@@aaanton11 I wish.... Rain ere at Heathrow.... More due in later & overnight..... I wash it on average around 3 times a week..... I use the term "wash" loosely as its my pride en joy..... So its more of a wipe over, to be fair as its never dirty. Av a great weekend. Alan L200
@@aaanton11 update: I just fixed both plugs with silicon today. Also checked under both sides under carpet for water damage. Fortunately its all dry as I got on top of it in time. Thanks again mate!
MX5 Parts say change both grommets because the drivers side grommet leaking cause water in the passenger foot well too....and that water leaks past the fuse box in the passenger footwell...which can electrical problems.
HI Anton, I have sealed the plug on the passenger side, it seems that there could be the same issue from the drivers side, is it the same procedure, although I guess that you have to remove the wipers, any advice would be great. Regards Craig
Be very careful how you prise the fitting out! Mine was a pain to get out and I ended up bending the metal and removing lots of paint. Had to spend more time reshaping the metalwork than any other part of the process!
Thinking of doing this i have the water in the footwells thought it might have come from the drain holes being blocked at the back ,which I have now cleaned .I am thinking if that was the cause of it but watching this I am thinking that it could be both . Just annoyed with the condensation that I am getting. I will need to get the windscreen replaced before the mot so when I will do I will get the windscreen guy to take off all the bits from the front and at the same time get the plastic bits replaced with new ones and add a little sealant just to be sure. Great video otherwise good tips and advice was thinking of getting a car wet and dry vac but will see what options with a possible heater to dry the inside of the car . Something to work on and think about Also maybe just reseal the boot rear brake light as well as I think that will stop the condensation. I am thinking this could be a good opportunity to check the seatbelts and clean them as this is another issue and maybe check the drain pipe to make sure it hasnt come loose while the seat is out Will keep you updated in a month of two but if any of you guys have any tips always welcomed .
You are absolute leg, thank you. Just found this morning I have the same issue. So rather than glue that clip, if I want to change to new, how do I order that? What is that clip called? Thank you again in advance.
Since I have no idea where my leak is coming from, I removed the plugs in the floor, behind the seats (under the carpet) and ripped out the insulation from the floor since it soaks up all the water. Now the water can pass through. None of my drains are clogged, so its either the seals are gone on cowl cover, or something else. Either way the insulation was soaked and disgusting so ripping it out I think was a good idea.
@@aaanton11 np and honestly not sure why they didn't put some better insulation that doesn't suck up the water in these if they knew that there is a good chance it will get wet. Not a whole lot of extra noise either with the insulation out and to be fair its a convertible so who cares about the extra noise :)
Hi Anton, thanks for your reply, have you done a video on the leak coming from the plug on drivers side, also I guess that water is leaking in through the rear centre stop light, have you done a video on this!! any advice would be great.
I am a firm believer in if its not broke, don't fix it, if it was leaking then repair it but there is always a chance of damaging the clip, a trim for a job that didn't need doing, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
In 2 days this video is 1 year old. So my question is: did this fix until today still work? I also have a water leak on my passenger footwell so I need to try this aswell! Much thanks for the video :)
The answer to your question is yes the vehicle is completely dry and the scuttle clip was the issue once sealed everything was okay Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@@aaanton11 Actually, after looking at the other side, it appears that the wiper arms need to be removed. This requires popping off the cap, and then using a metric socket to remove the nut. A little wiggling is necessary to free the arm from the splined shaft.
My questions are: what is the purpose of this clip, and how difficult is it to remove once this method of repair is done should it be necessary to remove and or replace?
Is there a knack to getting that plate off where the screw is hidden? In the video it just seemed to come out no problem at all. I've been trying for the last 10 mins with a small screw driver. I must be doing something wrong?
Maybe yours has been bonded in (be previous owner to stop leak) which now makes it harder to remove, they do just pop out, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Drivers side - had to take the drivers side wiper off but managed to change the grommet without having to take the passenger side wiper off. All good - only issue was one of the little black covers snapped. Well tested with a hosepipe - no leaks anywhere.
well done, great job, thanks for the update and for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Great information on how to do the repair, just slightly concerned about the silicone that you suggest on the link, the Dow 781 is a Acetoxy silicone which can cause metal to corrode!
That would be a first, but I will take your word for it, might take 20 years, Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thanks Paul for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Very useful video for what should be a routine preventative maintenance on any NC MX-5 over 10 years. Notice that he doesn’t show how to do it on the driver’s side, where both wiper arms must be removed before the cowl trim can be removed. A little more complicated but it’s not a big deal.
The drivers side wasn't leaking. Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Brilliant video - have exactly this issue and now I know what to do. Cheers!
Glad it helped, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Recently done this repair thanks to your video, so far so good , has been very wet here in NZ . Wettest July on record ?! Cheers again
Nice work! Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Oh yes. Saturday morning sorted.
An aaanton11 video.
Great content as usual.

You might still have time to give the L200 a wash and wax😂, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

I wish....
Rain ere at Heathrow.... More due in later & overnight.....
I wash it on average around 3 times a week..... I use the term "wash" loosely as its my pride en joy..... So its more of a wipe over, to be fair as its never dirty.
Av a great weekend.

I have the same problem, thanks for the walkthrough. Did you do something with the rusty pieces under the dashboard? Will not get better over time 😉
No, I just left them if there is no more moisture, the Rust won’t get any worse and it was only slight surface rust Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@28:54 the Missus in the background...checking if everything is AOK ;-)
😂 I hope its the missus, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
I have that on my right side LHD. Just did mine today. I’ll share the results. Ty
Same Scenario same repair, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
I also just bought one last week today it rained and I noticed it same place and everything so I will have to check that seal.
Excellent, we have exactly this problem. Many Thanks
Glad it helped Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Ive got the exact problem started a few weeks ago. Though mine is on the drivers right side.
2010 mx5
get the silicone out 😂 Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@@aaanton11 update: I just fixed both plugs with silicon today. Also checked under both sides under carpet for water damage. Fortunately its all dry as I got on top of it in time.
Thanks again mate!
Great video thanks, you’re really good at explaining things. Cheers
I appreciate that! Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
You're a lifesaver, thanks mate
Happy to help Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
MX5 Parts say change both grommets because the drivers side grommet leaking cause water in the passenger foot well too....and that water leaks past the fuse box in the passenger footwell...which can electrical problems.
This one was only leaking on the passenger side, but is up to you, change both if you feel better for it, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Great video, very clearly explained and with much detail, thanks.
Glad it was helpful!,Thanks Eddie for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Without any doubt - the Drain Holes are blocked. With the Hood UP- poke an electrical wire down the holes either side to let rain water OUT.
Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thank you, had the same trouble, brilliant 👍
Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Man! Thank you! Appreciate a lot all details explained.

Very Informative........ thanks soooooo much....... really appreciated!!!!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thanks heaps saved me a lot of time
Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
HI Anton, I have sealed the plug on the passenger side, it seems that there could be the same issue from the drivers side, is it the same procedure, although I guess that you have to remove the wipers, any advice would be great.
Regards Craig
Yes, it is, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Be very careful how you prise the fitting out! Mine was a pain to get out and I ended up bending the metal and removing lots of paint. Had to spend more time reshaping the metalwork than any other part of the process!
Good to know! Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Something to work on and think about
Also maybe just reseal the boot rear brake light as well as I think that will stop the condensation.
I am thinking this could be a good opportunity to check the seatbelts and clean them as this is another issue and maybe check the drain pipe to make sure it hasnt come loose while the seat is out
Will keep you updated in a month of two but if any of you guys have any tips always welcomed .
That would be great, hope you get it sorted, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Amazing video mate! I bought an NC recently and it leaked from the passenger footwell and I was wondering what caused the leak!
Glad it helped, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
You are absolute leg, thank you. Just found this morning I have the same issue. So rather than glue that clip, if I want to change to new, how do I order that? What is that clip called? Thank you again in advance.
Dealer part, it's the scuttle clip. Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thank you!
Greetings from Mexico
hello, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thank,s for watching, look water and rust...we can see...
Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thanks for sharing 🙏🏼 this helps tremendously!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Brilliant 👍 I assume its normally this route the water gets in?
Yes, correct, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Since I have no idea where my leak is coming from, I removed the plugs in the floor, behind the seats (under the carpet) and ripped out the insulation from the floor since it soaks up all the water. Now the water can pass through. None of my drains are clogged, so its either the seals are gone on cowl cover, or something else. Either way the insulation was soaked and disgusting so ripping it out I think was a good idea.
Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@@aaanton11 np and honestly not sure why they didn't put some better insulation that doesn't suck up the water in these if they knew that there is a good chance it will get wet. Not a whole lot of extra noise either with the insulation out and to be fair its a convertible so who cares about the extra noise :)
Hi Anton, thanks for your reply, have you done a video on the leak coming from the plug on drivers side, also I guess that water is leaking in through the rear centre stop light, have you done a video on this!! any advice would be great.
I have only done this video on the mx5, the drivers side is the same process, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Does the same happen with the drivers side? Is it worth doing the two at the same time? Very helpful video - thank you.
I am a firm believer in if its not broke, don't fix it, if it was leaking then repair it but there is always a chance of damaging the clip, a trim for a job that didn't need doing, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Excellent tutorial, thanks.
Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
In 2 days this video is 1 year old. So my question is: did this fix until today still work? I also have a water leak on my passenger footwell so I need to try this aswell! Much thanks for the video :)
The answer to your question is yes the vehicle is completely dry and the scuttle clip was the issue once sealed everything was okay Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Old newspaper is good for soaking up water in cases like this put some down it soaks it up like a sponge, 😁👍
Good tip! Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
This is the real reason they call NC’s boats
leaks in footwell, behind seats, and trunk
Thanks Ford.
Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Great info, and extremely well presented. Also a great accent.🙂
Is the other side the same?
Yes, it is! Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@@aaanton11 Actually, after looking at the other side, it appears that the wiper arms need to be removed. This requires popping off the cap, and then using a metric socket to remove the nut. A little wiggling is necessary to free the arm from the splined shaft.
Really clear and helpful, thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
I have the same problem in my NB :'( Will inspect around the same area tomorrow
Let me know how you get on, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
My questions are: what is the purpose of this clip, and how difficult is it to remove once this method of repair is done should it be necessary to remove and or replace?
It Holds the scuttle down, it is easy to remove even when silicone has gone off, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
What is that little rectangular seal for?
Is there one on the drivers side also ?
holding the trim down and there is one on both sides, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Just found your video and what a help. I have a 2008 with the PRHT,and have a leak on the passenger side footwell. I noticed it every time I wash the car and had no clue as to where the water was coming from. This week I'll be pulling off the cowl to have a look. Have you thought of checking the drivers side while you are at it?
The other side is fine at the moment, if it ain't broke don't fix it, I like that motto, but if It ever does I will do the same again Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
