Spreading Stone with Older John Deere Compact Tractor

  • Back to work for Dirt Perfect on another clean up job. The homeowner just recently had an addition put on that requires around 30 ton of stone to be spread for his new driveway approach and the dirt backfill done around the foundation of the of the new construction. To do this i will be on the John Deere 955. In the video, I will also discuss my views on why the older John Deere compact tractors are still the best starter tractor for any homestead or small excavation company.
Check out the video wit Tractor Time with Tim:
    • Complete John Deere 55...
here is the video of Neil and the quick attach he built for our 755:

Life wouldn't be the same without my 855. It gets used in the garden, as a lawn mower, for hauling things around, pulling out neighbours who get stuck in the ditch or on the beach, moving snow, and a few weeks ago as a big ol' weight when the wind started to blow to make sure a greenhouse didn't fly away (again).

I see as a long time viewer, it mirrors other videos I watched in the past with new commentary so that it holds the test. If I look into the comments and see a five months ago it makes me look stupid for one and I do enjoy every video enough that if bored will watch other old ones that help me understand the why we do it this way. Hoping mud is on its way as we are from the minus thirty mark to the plus thirty degrees and early morning ... I hope for a patch of blue so the snow load doesn't get real deep

A nice after Church Sunday afternoon video Captain.
I confess, I cheated a little and was watching you on my phone as my Pastor was finishing up the invite after sermon portion online.

Cap’n, I won’t tell the 755 what you said about your fondness for the 955… but, you do know that there is a full blown John Deere network all across this country. Don’t you?
I’m not sure exactly how it works. It’s origins are obscure and date back way before the internet.
As a child, I remember my dad picking up the paper version at the feed store… it was a free monthly newspaper called ‘Tractor Talk’. The front and back page were the only ones that were printed in color. And guess what color all the tractors were on them?
I suspected then that there was some communication process in place.
On the morning Farming Today TV show, they had a segment called ‘Green Tractor Talk’. I thought it was about people talking about JD tractors.
Then I bought a used JD400. It ran like a top when I tested it out. Then I brought it home and parked it beside my Farmall A. The next morning the Farmall had a flat tire and a dead battery. I don’t know what happened for sure. But looking back, I suspect the JD laughed and chided the A into giving up. Because, the battery would never hold a charge, nor the tire hold air, from that day forward. I think the A just lost all its gumption!
A few months later I traded the A for a tiller to go on the 400. Coincidence? I think not… my neighbor went to a Farm Sale. He was leaning against a JD420. He pulled his hat off to scratch his head at the exact moment the auctioneer looked his way. And, just like that he had bought a tiller for which he had no use!
Kismet? Fate? Destiny? In retrospect, I think not!!! I am convinced that the JD420 sent some subliminal message to the neighbors hair follicles that caused his head to itch. How it knew that he was my neighbor…. How it connected the dots through his relationship to me… How it realized that I had an old tired unhappy Farmall A that I wanted to get rid of… How it was aware that My JD400 wanted a tiller…. I’ll never know for sure. But, it did.
Cap’n the evidence is all around us. All you have to do is look… it ain’t about people talking about green tractors. It’s actually about Green Tractors TALKING TO Green Tractors!
So, beware what you say to one Green Tractor… because, surely as I’m sitting here… somehow what one JD learns becomes tribal knowledge! Like I said, I won’t tell the 755…. Because it already knows!!

I agree with the comments u made about getting a good working older tractor to start out. I've so called upgraded from a 2210 with a loader to a 1025r, and I believe it was a mistake. The 2210 seemed more powerful and heavier built. People could still buy the attachments.

Glad to see you get off the implement to do some hand work. Seems like a lot of the guys on RUclips spend ten times the work “trying” to get close but never get off the equipment. Often faster and better with a shovel and rake!
I’m just like you, a firefighter with a side job as a landscaper/excavator - almost 40 years now. My boss has a rule - Never try to equipment grade/work less than 12” to structure. Of course this rule took awhile to come to fruition - not long after the boss took out an industrial air conditioner and later a gas meter.

Buy old, heavy duty, and fix/modify them to what you need. Best way to go and most cost effective. I drove from N. Alabama to Southern Indiana this past summer to pick up a 40+ yr-old Int'l 12' Hyd disc for less than $1K, and have put less than $150 into it to fix/modify what I wanted. It is FAR stronger and more capable than those small 6-7' discs you can buy for well over $1K, PLUS has the hyd lift and adjustable gangs. Am working on a custom rake for my excavator right now from a busted up old grapple I located and a $160 set of Kubota quick attach plates from Amazon. For less than $500 I will have a exactly the attachment I need and for WAY less than the $2500 to $4000 they are going for.....IF anybody even has one available in less that 2-3 months.

Bought it new in 2014 and from about the first month right through today it has had the entire front drive system replaced, blown hydraulic hoses, oil leaks, blown drive shaft from the engine to the HST and currently a vibration I am trying to figure out. I should have bought a Deere. It’s mostly used for mowing, very little digging and regularly serviced. Love the channel.

I would love to have one of those JD Tractors. But I'll just have to settle with my 24" Husqvarna riding lawn mower and 15 cubic feet, 750lb payload yard trailer. Of course, I wouldn't use that trailer with the older belt driven lawnmowers. Will definitely go through a lot of belts pulling that kind of weight. The Husqvarna has a hydrostatic transmission, so no belt. Definitely better for pulling that trailer fully loaded!

I agree with you that the older compacts make a much nicer homestead machine. Also. Only just started watching your channel. Very good content!

I sold my '88 755 to upgrade to a new tractor. Now I regret selling it. Loved that machine! The best was the responsiveness and precision of the 3 point.

Another fun video Kleeman! BTW, the background, steel guitar music you have had in the past couple of videos is outstanding! Crisp, appropriate and the vocals are soulful. Very nice choice Mike!

Thanks for the video! I am reminded of a few videos back when you say you didn't have much seat time on the dozers. Well, that may be true, but I would say on a compact tractor 🚜 you have about done it all! You work your 755 like a 992 Caterpillar and it seemingly doesn't break, amazing! Great channel! Keep up the great adventures! Thanks for sharing!
