  • Joolz takes you on a jolly spiffing London walk from Parsons Green to Putney Bridge through Fulham. Lot's of jolly interesting facts about Hurlingham Club, King George IV and the Bishops of London. Fulham Palace, the 1976 film The Omen and Fulham Football Stadium.
Plus the usual irreverent banter from Julian and Simon.

My father in law Arthur William “Billy” Watson was a survivor of the 1928 Fulham flood. His rescuer was Madge Franckeiss who later received a citation from the Royal Humane Society. Sadly his sister Irene Watson and cousin Dorothy Watson both perished in the flood.
They were living in the basement flat at Hurlingham Court. The flood waters burst the bank at the Hurlingham Club. Thank you for bringing this walking view of the neighborhood all the way to Cape Cod.

Thank you for all your videos. They bring back many memories of my teen years. I was born in NW London in 1939 and lived there till 1956 when my patents moved out of London. My teenage years were spent working in London, Warwick Lane. Weekends were spent with my mates waling or biking around the west end. I had many trips back there till 1968 when I left for Western Australia. I remember vividly the view from Hampstead Heath of an unspoilt St. Paul's dominating the skyline. Sadly London has been spoilt by incongruous architecture.

I wasn’t aware either polo field was bombed. They were definitely donated to the council during the war to be used as ‘dig for victory’ allotments by locals. After the war the council declined to give them back to the Club and the flats were built and Hurlingham Club was created.

Crikey - so close to the lovely Crabtree pub by FFC and you ended up going over the river to a Putney pub!.
Good job though - here's a few missed bits:
    - The Elizabethan School (on the way to the Hurlingham) - but lovely external shot
    - The old Ferry dock from the grounds of Bishop's park - still with the words "Ferry" on the sides of the stairs - ran up the 1950s
    - The old Moat drain
    - The memorial in the Bishop's Park rose garden to the Fulhamites who joined International Brigade during the Spanish civil war
    - The curious story of the borough with two football clubs (Fulham & Chelsea). When the London Athletic Club moved out of their sports ground in Fulham near the station (Walham Green as it was), it was redeveloped by it's new owner as a football ground and was to be the new home to Fulham. Fulham couldn't afford it and stayed where they were and a new team was formed to play at the new ground in Fulham. Called Chelsea, in Fulham.

    • @chelseacharger
      @chelseacharger 2 года назад

Ah, that was around about late 1904 when Fulham turned down Stamford Bridge. The founders of Chelsea FC , the Mears brothers, firm had built a lot of houses in SW London. I think they had also previously done some construction work at Craven Cottage too. They were also members of the London Athletic Club which had moved to Stamford Bridge in 1877. They wanted to turn the stadium into a multi-sports arena so the track remained. The famous Olympian, Harold Abrahams was also a member of LAC. The London Athletic Club didn't actually move out until 1933. This was after Speedway and then Greyhound Racing had been introduced there. J.T. Mears (one of the brothers) actually gets a mention at 6:25 of this particular walk. Joolz could do three or four walks around SW6.

Ooh Joolzy, it's like a present every time I see a new video of you. You truely bring some happiness into my life. Thank you so much!
Btw I like this classical/piano music far better then the songs you usually have playing in the background!

I also noticed how wonderful the music was in this video. I assumed it was because the neighborhood was so posh. Some areas in the other videos work well with Li'l Lost Lou's music or Tom Considine's jingle jangle tunes.

Nice video but as an Fulamite, I was a bit disappointing that you neglected to mention the Castle Club building on Broomhouse Road. This was a wonderful example of Victorian neo-gothic architecture and was originally built as a convalescence home for patients from the old Brompton Hospital on the Fulham Road (built in the same style and lovingly converted into exclusive flats). I think that the castle club has also had the same fate.

That was a blast from the past, I lived in Napier Avenue from 1961 to circa 69. My bedroom was on the top floor and my window overlooked the Council park And playing fields. We were members of the Hurlingham Club, and I used to walk our dog there most days. It has a lovely look over the river, I note the embankment has changed very little, and neither has Putney Station.
60 years ago.... what a memory blast, thank you. I was 10-16 years old then ....

I am Franco/British and love all Joolz videos and learnt a lot from them, and consequently discovered many places in London and interesting tales, such a the one of Duck island linked to a man called Charles de St Evremond, who was born very close to where I live in France. I live both in France and in Kingston upon Thames. I was delighted to see the street named after me in this walk. ...Thank you very much Joolz.
