Mainstream media spoils gems like this constantly. Too many chefs in the kitchen, over-production and on and on. Much better (& less destructive) to support excellence directly rather than wish a Netflix deal on anything genuinely GOOD. Have you seen the toll a production deal takes on creativity? Homogenized it, polishes it, desensitizes it, Cans it, wraps it in cellophane and monetizes it beyond recognition or usefulness. Wouldn’t wish it on a bill collector.
I adore your walks. I had only three days in London in 2000. I fell hopelessly in love with the city. Was never able to return, and now I'm too old and too poor to travel. Your videos are much appreciated by me. Thankyou.
I busked on The Portobello Road in 1978. My hair was midway down my back and i had been interning and studying under R.D.Laing in his North West London Communities. Your film proves we can't go home again. No one then would have guessed i turned out. Cheers!
Compliments to the camerman---great artful shots of all the locations. Obviously a 'pro'---someone who has studied his craft! Very much appreciated--also the 'running' commentary, well researched and a wealth of info!!!
Portobello Road makes me want to watch the movie Bedknobs and Broomsticks again, and sing the song. I can absolutely see where he got the inspiration/ lyrics from with all those lovely market stalls.
It's so fascinating that you found a postbox from the Victorian age that is still usable! So I googled for how long postboxes have been the colour they are in Germany (bright yellow). They came in various shades of black, blue and other colours during the Imperial Era, then, they change to red in 1934, and that colour was discontinued in 1945. They were a dull yellow before my time, then a very bright yellow when I was a child, and now, a not quite as bright yellow. (I hope they stay the way they are now!)
The brands museum is on Lancaster Rd, the same road as the Grenfell Tower and the museum used to be The Terrence Higgins Trust. Princess Diana would visit often and there are many news reels of her visits as she would draw crowds.
Hi mate. Great channel! I worked in a couple of those properties you've featured today. Behind the "Blue door" is actually a courtyard, leading to a modern, glass fronted house built behind the gardens of the other properties. Also worked in the Spice shop, the Castle pub and the Cupcake shop at the top end. Thanks and loving going through your videos
It's amazing to think that I used to work closely to this area and I used to be there almost all the time and never knew about all this historic content.
OMG, I USED TO LIVE AROUND THE CORNER AT KENSINGTON GARDENS IN 1988 - 1990 AS AN AU PAIR FROM SWITZERLAND. I BOUGHT SO MANY FANTASTIC UNIQUE RECORDS IN THAT SHOP! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!! ❤️
I discovered your channel quite by accident but being an anglophile I've come to treasure your tours. I hope someday to holiday in London. If I get the chance I'll definitely have you give me the tour.
It's not often I view videos 'recommended for you ' but, boy, am I so pleased I decided to view this one. Mobility issues and failing health prevents me from visiting the great Metropolis that is Londinium nowadays, but watching you, and Alex, taking us around two areas of the city I particularly enjoyed visiting in the mid 80's/ early 90's was a real treat. When I was visiting from my home in Bedford for a night on the razz then I'd go to Earls Court and Soho. But on non-boozy days I'd explore Notting Hill and Portobello. I'd invariably return home skint having bought some ludicrously expensive 'vintage' tat, lol. Happy days. Fantastic work, Joolz.
Thanks! Well I have many more films about London and other places. Do subscribe for all the latest. It costs nothing and won't get on your nerves. I haven't done Earls Court yet and I"m considering a Soho film!
Adorable video like all the ones you show us. I love your stories. It is pity that you don't know much about Brazilian singers and composers. If you knew two of our best composers, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil lived in Notting Hill for four years. Not for a good reason, though,. They were on exile. They could not return because they could be arrested. They had spent a couple of months in jail not knowing the reason and when they left they were inforned they had to leave Brazil. They chose a great place to be: London! And in Notting Hill. Caetano composed some good songs while there and one of them was recorded by Scott Walker. The one called Maria Bethania. But one of my favourite is Nine of Ten where he mentions Portobello Road. "walk down Portobello Road to the sound of reggae"...
That at 10:44 I remember as a kid there was a lady that came round the streets with a wooden handcart and a block of ice selling to us kids. The days before 7/11 opened up on Westbourne Grove and introduced my world to slush puppy. I remember a lot of hardship, not a lot of wealth, but a great feeling of community. I moved away from London to Sweden 25 years ago. I still get recognised as being the son of my father when I'm back visiting which isn't more than once every five years. Recognised by people unknown to me after both me and my father not being around for the best part of 30 years. Quite amazing in a city with such a large population.
Thank you so much for this. I lived in Lansdowne Road my entire childhood and early adulthood. So many places I used to go were featured here. Pubs I frequented (not the main one which was the Ladbroke Arms), the church I attended, kicking and screaming, gardens which all had annual parties in July with local steel bands, games and dancing later on, real family and friends time. Portobello was where we bought all our food - it had a small and very early Tesco - and later on clothes and costume jewellery. Great memories. Thanks again.
Yes, all the houses have small back gardens and the residents enter through them. We also had friends and neighbours in the other gardens so we were able to go to their summer parties as well. Also, we had a key to Ladbroke Square but I never worked out why! My grandmother bought the house in 1948 when the area was largely Irish and full of artists and musicians. A few years later my parents met in the same house.
Joolz, THANK YOU. One of the most entertaining videos I've watched in a long time. LOVED THIS. ❤ Keep up the great work. Something of a national treasure feel to all of this. 👏👏
Oh my heart! I was there in Portobello Road about 14 months ago.....stayed in Ladbroke Street, and walked all the places you have shown today. What a feast for the eyes, I bought a tea pot & mugs in Alice's...I absolutely adored London, I must return soon...love your videos btw....you are a natural x
Oh you are wonderful thanks for subscribing hon, I am not a chef, I am just a home cook. I adore all your videos...you are one of the best and most entertaining on youtube! :)
Having lived in London. For a very long time...and my soul still beeing there....his depth of knowledge is increadible... he is amazing..and it come fro. The inner soul....applaude to you...if one ever wants a guide...he would be it...there is no comparison.....he is the 21st century baedecker.......
Looks brilliant in this area, Joolz. I like the look of the market and shops with bric-a-bric items and records. Nice to know that many shots of the film Notting Hill had taken place here. Many thanks, a great video.
So many wonderful and interesting places to see and visit. Pointing out all the hidden gems many would just pass by. Great guide once again. Thank you Julian
You know Joolz, I believe that this is my second favourite vlog..the first fav being Highgate that was super and this one is as well. Thanks so much. Diana
Thanks Diana. I think it's because I'm familiar with those areas as I knew them growing up and also I'm relaxed with the camera person. My other cameraman, Simon, gets on my nerves..... Only kidding Simon!!!!
Ha ha! Is it normal to offend people in videos these days? I suppose times are changing. I try not to. I can't see how I would benefit from it. Thanks for watching. I'm glad you liked it!
I’ve always been fascinated with finding out about the place my ancestors lived for generations and this has been the most helpful and pleasant RUclips video to help me do that so I just had to comment.
Absolutely cracking Jools. I’ve walked the Portabello Rd many times. Also used the Retro menswear and records shops - still have some vouchers somewhere. Withnail & I is one of my favourite films - as is the Italian Job - and I knew neither of those facts.
1973 a lot of Portobello Ladbroke Grove was squats and a a dump ! We didn't actually know any who would want to live there, many houses were almost in ruin or multiple bedsits ! But the market was fab, no food shops all Junk !
As a lad from Bethnal Green of long ago now living in New York, I really enjoy your brill video tours but I never heard you sing Maybe It's Because I'm a Londoner. I loved the episode on Bethnal Green and hoped you would have gone in my old street. Florida Street. Cheers ol China, Dr.David Deak 78 years young.
Ahhh I remember and miss when the Music and Video Exchange had a few shops all around there. I picked up tons of old rare videos, comics, laser discs and records there.
Glad to see another installment of the J Guide. It has been a few weeks without the old update. Well, there you have it, and beware of tautological repetition or any of those adnominatio, anadiplosis, anaphora, antanaclasis, antistasis, conduplicatio, diacope, diaphora, epanalepsis, epistrophe, epizeuxis, mesarchia, mesodiplosis, palilogia, paregmenon, ploce, polyptoton, polysyndeton and of course symploce.
Oh wow! I couldn’t believe he has La Costeña Chiles from Mexico! And Tabasco Sauce. Wow! Here in Mexico they’re so common, I believe every household has at least one of those products! Congratulations Notting Hill!
*dabs tears* oh deary me... if your videos, so far, had managed to make me utterly nostalgic for London, this one in particular touched my heart. Notting Hill Gate was where I stayed in London, back in 2015. 14 Pembridge Square was my hotel. Only that it was october/november and it looked very different in cold autumn (I actually preferred it. Heat and sun are my enemies :P). Thank you very much for this. It helped me to realise how much I missed of the area! I didn't walk around that much... I need to go back (I also would need lots of money). Absolutely loved it. Have a great week! xx
Thanks! Yes, for some reason this film has resonated with a lot of people. I don't know why. Perhaps I'm just more relaxed or I let the locations do the talking. Could also be the music!
Thank you so much for your incredible videos, I’ve been in London on and off for 15 years and didn’t know half of what you taught me. I could listen to you all day long..
lived in westbourne park and spent my childhood round portebello so am totally enthused by this vid and was actually there on the day of filming reece efhans blue door scene brings back warm memories, thanks you dapper gent
Great Vid, Joolzie! Been a while, but it's ok, mate...we know you're bizzy with tours and your just one man....will Always patiently wait for the next vid....like a cool drink of water on a hot day....love you, Joolzie...Cheers!
There is a Windsor castle in Maidenhead and we all say the same thing about being able to see it from there but to see 30miles away from there would be good going lol
Really enjoying the tours, locals and movie that started it all. Threw some quid your way to keep up the good work, a true gentleman. We'll look you up for a tour if we visit again. Looks like you're really starting to get popular. Best of luck.
Living in Bloomfield New Jersey dreaming of London. Your videos are a perfect solution (other than saving up to a really get there). Your sense of humor is hilarious. Thoroughly enjoy your channel. Thank you so much!
How beautiful London is now. I used to love wandering about in London, as you do, & looking at all of the interesting buildings. I think your videos are the nearest I am likely to get to doing that now. But that is good, as you supply so many interesting facts which I find fascinating! Thank you for that, Julian.
I find your videos absolutely fascinating and entertaining at the same time!. I spent many years in Shepherds Bush and also remember Notting Hill back in the late 80's and it was certainly not glam back then! I love learning about the history of London. From one former punk back in the 80's :)
I really enjoy these tours given by Joolz. Entertaining as well as historical. When my health changes I plan on making it over there where my pop visited during the war.
Brilliant I grew up round here Im still involved in carnival and I loved the magical mystery tours ,also used to blah picture sleeves from Vernon yard .
Fun London Guides - Julian McDonnell Films yep by honest John's up past the flyover ,I went on 3tours great Yarmouth ,a train one and a Butlins somewhere always remember the Hendrix band that sounded just like him ,I spose they where the original raves.
Absolutely love your tours as ever Julian - especially the postbox tidbits, I hadn't looked closely at those. Will do now! I'm dreading heading out into Hampstead to film my next walking tour. Over 30 degrees right now!!
Can I just say yr videos are extremely educational I havnt learnt this much history of London at school it is a bundle of academic wonders please keep it up I think yr absolutely wonderful nd thank you for teaching Me so much about my favourite city in the world..hats off to u Mr. Jools u should look into teaching history I wldnt mind a gorgeous teacher like I teaching me history anytime.
Another fine effort. It's hard to believe that Notting Hill wasn't always posh. In the 1960s and 70s it was full of hippies and Jamaicans. Jimi Hendrix lived and died in Notting Hill.
Dear Jules, we are new fans of Jules Guides. love your informative, wonderful, fascinatingly trivia filled London walks and talks. We are both musicians and enjoy your English music hall bits! Also, would like to hear some more about literary residents of Primrose Hill; Sylvia Plath, Ted Hughes, Al Alvarez, et al. In your next Primrose episode!
1:45 - my favourite record shop in London! I always visit it right before going back home (once I was about to loose my plane!).Hope to be there in May 2020.
Thankyou for sharing your knowledge. Your films are very interesting & informative. I do enjoy them & find them a good relaxing thing to watch when I feel stressed.
We always go to the market on Portobello Road but you've certainly added a lot to our next journey. I will definitely remember this video tour and the sights you pointed out. Good job!

Is there an E VIII postbox?
Give this Guy a Netflix Series! Brilliant!

Doc Savage What’s with you?
Or a thing on mainstream TV

Yup, I concur you should have a Netflix series about London, history, culture and myths. You are awesome!
I agree. I'm an American and this guy sucks me in and makes me feel nostalgic for British history/culture which isn't even mine
I adore your walks. I had only three days in London in 2000. I fell hopelessly in love with the city. Was never able to return, and now I'm too old and too poor to travel. Your videos are much appreciated by me. Thankyou.
One of the things I like about your films is that they end with a drink. I fancy one now.
I was a nanny in this area and we had a key to this garden, it was a lovely time!❤
You walked passed the lovely Electric Cinema without a mention.
I busked on The Portobello Road in 1978. My hair was midway down my back and i had been interning and studying under R.D.Laing in his North West London Communities. Your film proves we can't go home again.

As an italian I had chills when Francesco started singing!
You make me want to live in London so bad, I hope I will manage to move in the future
@Delawanna you've obviously not been to much of Britain then.
Portobello Road makes me want to watch the movie Bedknobs and Broomsticks again, and sing the song. I can absolutely see where he got the inspiration/ lyrics from with all those lovely market stalls.
After 60 years, I still haven't seen that film. Disney's follow-up to Mary Poppins wasn't it?
@@MrDaiseymay great film

This is a fantastic channel that brings London off the map!
I was working near The Churchill Arms pub couple of winters ago. The pub was decorated with over 100 Christmas trees.
I discovered your channel quite by accident but being an anglophile I've come to treasure your tours. I hope someday to holiday in London. If I get the chance I'll definitely have you give me the tour.
Why can't you be happy with your own culture and must you idolise something else
Having spent 60 + days in London over the past decade we now obsess over Joolz's video's-Carry ON! billandlauri U.S.A.
My total respect to you for your ability to remember so much fascinating facts and present it so well.
Great tour of Notting Hill I love the Mews Houses.
Yeah, they're amazing. I wish I lived there.
Lovely that you stop by the spice shop ... I went during my visit and I get the best souvenir I coud ever gave to someone

I lived there in the seventies. The Golborne Road end of the market (the scruffy end) was great, really interesting stuff.

This video was definitely worth the wait! Now I can't wait to get back to London to check out Portobello road market
Thanks! Maybe I'll see you then!
Great! Thanks! I'm hoping to get to Shepherds Bush too!
I really enjoy these tours given by Joolz. Entertaining as well as historical. When my health changes I plan on making it over there where my pop visited during the war.
Nice one Jools - very interesting!
Thanks. And I didn't even cover everything!
Brilliant I grew up round here Im still involved in carnival and I loved the magical mystery tours ,also used to blah picture sleeves from Vernon yard .
Do you remember Planet Alice?
Fun London Guides - Julian McDonnell Films yep by honest John's up past the flyover ,I went on 3tours great Yarmouth ,a train one and a Butlins somewhere always remember the Hendrix band that sounded just like him ,I spose they where the original raves.
I have enjoyed your videos since I started watching them December gone you are a great guide .❤😊
Absolutely love your tours as ever Julian - especially the postbox tidbits, I hadn't looked closely at those. Will do now! I'm dreading heading out into Hampstead to film my next walking tour. Over 30 degrees right now!!
Oooh.. nice. Yes, it's tough! Happy to join you if you like.
I actually have a lot more time now so would love to work on a video with you! I'll tweet you!
Just amazing love watching
And me!!
I've been to the Notting Hill Carnival once and it was absolute madness. Glad I went but once was enough for me.
Yes, I'm sort of the same. I prefer a bit more peace.
I grew up there and hated it...I used to move out to stay with friends elsewhere to get away from it.
@@mjh5437 it was only for two days . two Days out of an entire year
for christ sake
Dear Jules, we are new fans of Jules Guides. love your informative, wonderful, fascinatingly trivia filled London walks and talks. We are both musicians and enjoy your English music hall bits! Also, would like to hear some more about literary residents of Primrose Hill; Sylvia Plath, Ted Hughes, Al Alvarez, et al. In your next Primrose episode!
1:45 - my favourite record shop in London! I always visit it right before going back home (once I was about to loose my plane!).Hope to be there in May 2020.
Brilliant video 👍
Thankyou for sharing your knowledge. Your films are very interesting & informative. I do enjoy them & find them a good relaxing thing to watch when I feel stressed.
We always go to the market on Portobello Road but you've certainly added a lot to our next journey. I will definitely remember this video tour and the sights you pointed out. Good job!
Thanks! Yes, there are many others too. DOn't forget to subscribe and see the others! It's free!
Amazing ! Nice shot of my old bed-sit opposite the Brands and Label museum at 158 Lancaster Rd (not Landsdown) circa 1968
Fabulous video, very informative. Joolz loves his beer!!
You seem such a great guy from your videos. As an ex Londoner I love seeing your tours ✌😀
I must be a good actor in that case!
Welcome back so nice to see another Vlog, I did miss you last time I was in London, but I’ll be back April/May next year.
Thanks. Well I guess I'll see you then unless I make it big in Hollywood!
