  • About 10% of women of reproductive age are struggling with infertility and that number is on the rise. Individuals struggling with infertility can often feel hopeless. And while there is no across the board explanation for what causes infertility, by looking at the underlying issues that may be factoring in, it can often be reversed. ⁣⁣
    ⁣⁣
In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating infertility. They discuss specific patient cases and share why it is important to consider a wide range of factors including toxin exposure, nutritional decificenes, stress management, and more. ⁣⁣
    ⁣⁣
Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the functional medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well. ⁣⁣

This topic hits a nerve for me. It was a four year process to get pregnant. I went through so many tests and had invitro fail on me twice. I could not continue since I exhausted the benefit. There was nothing that could explain why I could not get pregnant. I was diagnosed as unexplained fertility. I remember asking the doctor could there be some immune response causing my issues and he dismissed my claim. My husband and I were sooo devastated after all the failed attempts. We left the fertility clinic feeling defeated and wondering if we should try again. After joining a group that referred me to the right acupuncturist, he discovered I had a gluten allergy and said that has an effect on fertility which I never knew! It could have saved me money and heartache! After going gluten free for 4 months and feeling hopeless, I discovered I was pregnant. I say this to say that sometimes you need other options and I am glad I found my acupuncturist. Two kids later I am happy with my results. 😊 Thanks for doing this topic. It will help a lot of those from making mistakes that I did.

Wow, so the unwanted hair analysis (“lose it where you want it...”) is another confirmation of my weight loss struggle! Of course I was also under 7 years of work related stress. Making a decision to change my diet today.

Loved this! I wish every woman had the resources to pursue this type of care. Even if she isn't having fertility issues. Its so important to our health as a society to grow our babies in healthy bodies. I started studying nutrition in my 20s and became obsessed with high-quality nutrient-dense foods. Also became a yoga instructor and enjoyed a very hathy lifestyle. Ended up becoming pregnant even when we were trying NOT to. 2 years later we wanted to give our son a sibling. I told my husband I was ovulating and asked if he wanted to try. He was 100% on board. We took a positive test 9 days later. I almost feel like I am not allowed to tell other women this because most of them can't concieve easily or they have had multiple miscarriages. I wish I could make it easier for them

My endocrinologist didn’t want to give me thyroid medicine for my thyroid antibodies. He said since my tsh & t3,t4 were normal he didn’t want it to become out of Wack with thyroid medicine. This is why doctors are frustrating
