- PCOS, or polycystic ovarian syndrome, affects between 5 to 10 percent of all women. PCOS symptoms include irregular or heavy periods, acne, facial hair, scalp hair loss, increased belly fat, and increased levels of testosterone. It is also strongly correlated with infertility. While conventional medicine typically views PCOS as a gynecological issue, it is actually commonly driven by things such as diet, environmental toxins, genetics, and more.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating patients with PCOS. They delve into topics including the relationship between PCOS and insulin resistance, gut health, and much more.

He's too flippant in his laughter. Hair loss and hirsutism is a very emotional issue form many women
The gentleman was kind of insensitive in his reactions and responses. As a woman with pcos watching this, way to make me feel more awful than I needed to for having this... anyway, there are 4 types of pcos and it is a very genetic issue. Symptoms persist for many even after diet changes. Birth control helps preserves fertility for women with pcos
PCOS can be exacerbated by immune dysfunction induced by functional thiamine insufficiency. Have a look at Derrick Lonsdale work, he wrote a book about thiamine/Vitamin B1.
Look up EONutrition, he has an article about it and also a RUclips channel.
Thank you for all the amazing information you provide! love the flow of your conversation and examples that you give
15 minutes into it and no mention of the actual ovarian cysts.
so glad to hear this bec everyone thinks PCOS presents only one way
at 23:50 she mentioned some tests they did for the digestive system - can you please share what the test names are?
Would you please have Dr Vandana Shiva as a guest on day... or more?
YES!
Talking about dairy is kefir ok?
At 18 min is a very important point, 'MET' toxins affect inflammation and insulin resistance.. Many people don't know they have histamine intolerance due to their diet (gluten/wheat and caseine/dairy).. These dietary stressors go from intestine to blood stream, and these toxins raise blood pressure as well.
Great and helpful discussion. I wonder if PCOS may cause a benign tumor on a adrenal gland?
I work with Parkinson’s patients and many of my men patients have been linked to agent orange. One of my female patients believes she got her Parkinson’s from working in a warehouse that used to be a chemical lab & blew through the air vents. She said many of her co-workers would get ver ill at work.
Do you know a Dr that does what you do in the UK ? I swear all of the good health professionals are in the US.
The real question is, what is the cause of pcos
I don't think the cause is completely understood yet. For now, no cure, only ways to help manage the symptoms.
What type of prebiotic supplement will you recommend
Garden of life prebiotic fibre blend
Good information!
I’m 39 year old I have pcos and taking metformin and birth control pill. I want to get pregnant for last 4 year and didn’t get success
Well you're on birth control, you need to stop taking it to get pregnant. Also best diets for pcos is keto- Cut most carbs and sugar from your diet. Also start taking inositol & berberine it helps regulate your insulin.
i have PCOS it's better when I'm on intermittent fasting however my hairline still receding, i work up many causes such as thyroid anemia it's quite normal i stop fasting because at first i think i have nutritional depletion however i notice while im on IF i take lots of carbs im not sure whehter my hairloss doesn't completely heal or not. Thailand
I am curious what herbal combination was used on Dr. Boham patient example??
Toxins.....Plastic, fluorine,chlorine,fluoride,lead,cosmetics
The cause of pcos is hashimoto, people with this desease have high cholesterol.
All the problems with the food industry...doesn't matter if you're vegan (veggies, fruits, meats, dairy...pesticides, hormones) or not...everything is so tainted. What a time to be alive. 🙃🙃🙃🙃
Good discussion. It’s so helpful when you don’t keep interrupting her and allow her to speak long enough to unfold her ideas and information. People are looking for answers and she is the expert which is why she’s here. Thanks for the valuable information and now looking for solutions.
Totally agree with you. He talks way way too much than the speaker. Why bother to invite her then if he knows it all.
I think Dr. Hyman needs a refresher on appropriate bedside manner.
Agree … I was wishing he’s just shush up!
Researchers believe that stress and environmental factors (including diet, exercise, and pollution) play a role in the development of PCOS. Other possible causes include excessive prenatal exposure to androgen/testosterone and excessive insulin production.👍
It's the prenatal exposure in the womb that causes the fetus to develop hyperandrogenemia (PCOS). Environmental factors can trigger or exacerbate the symptoms but its not the cause. If there's no gene, there's no enviromental trigger to "cause" PCOS.
Here is a link to an old article about what I mentioned.
www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.newscientist.com/article/2168705-cause-of-polycystic-ovary-syndrome-discovered-at-last/&ved=2ahUKEwjs9dD7toPvAhWOsp4KHUq3AMoQFjAMegQIDxAC&usg=AOvVaw1JISXivFiPWrzlq5V_b5ho
It still carries a lot of skepticism and sadly, most endocrinologists refuse to acknowledge it or take into consideration.
How to get better and stop loosing hair?
I heard hashimotos
Love your podcast! I'm happy there is more information on pcos. However, I would like to know how to approach a conversation with our doctors to talk about how to not take metformin and birth control. I sound like the cases that were mentioned. But thank you!!!
How can you tell when it's toxin related?
Dr. Elizabeth is 10/10 beautiful 🔥😜!
Would love another discussion like this one but about Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder in women.
I have learned so much from your videos and Dr Alessio Fasano’s talks about the microbiome! I would like to request consideration for a video about organic OATS. The Beta-glucans and fiber in oats greatly assist in controlling my acid reflux. I know the EWG has highlighted concerns of glyphosate in oats (and other grains). What is your opinion of inclusion of non-gmo, organic oats in the diet since organic oats are not as contaminated with glyphosate as conventional oats? I know inclusion of whole grains are a key component in the Mediterranean diet….
What about raw milk dairy products from cows not given antibiotics?
Where is your office located and name? 👀
Thank you for this great video. 🙏🏼
Thank you 🙏
