I first heard this song on Devs years ago as my marriage was falling apart, I remember thinking that I want to feel this way about someone one day and share this song with someone who loved me and slow dance in my living room holding that person, I did it last night ❤
No kidding!!! He's just so soulful. Love John's music a ton and this song says it all. The emotion, the honesty of feeling etc. It's all there and I love it!!! ❤️🌟✌️
favourite artist of all time for me, i listen to a john martyn song nearly every day the best thing is my two year old son loves him too he falls asleep to go down easy and solid air nearly every time. if he's awake at the end of the song he'll shout 'yeah John'
I always have the same reaction to these live JM clips: I look at his red face & glazed eyes & I say "oooh shit, he's wasted, he's gonna blow it" as he sets up the intro, and then he moves toward the mic & I say "ooh shit, here goes", and he starts singing, and it's (once again) the most moving, passionate performance I've ever heard from the man. Whatta guy.
Alex. One time I saw him and his son Spencer had to literally attach him to pretuned guitars and initially an annoyed unfriendly audience heckled him (due to obvious inebriation) until John, Spencer Cozens, John Giblin and Arran Ahmun treated the Audience to another sublime experience. Boy do I miss Him, recordings are great but as we know you had to see the man!
I remember being at the Lisdoonvarna festival in the late 70s and after hours of different accoustic folk bands, this guy pluged in his guitar and the most amazing sound filled the air.I've been a fan ever since. The world is a worse place without John Martyn.
A friend took me to a John Martyn gig as a birthday present in the late 90s, best birthday present ever because it give me a lifetime with John Martyns music, cheers Davey!
I had the privilege of seeing him a number of times. Like many people are commenting how much talent he had, he never got the accolades he richly deserved, but his music has been in my life for over 40 years through the good times and the bad. Miss you big man.
Standin' at my back door slightly cracked... -5 degree's smokin' observing the winter sky 2016 thinkin' why this song needs to be heard daily and on the radio station...
Fred Again bought me here, I’ve listen to John for years, but never focused on this song. It’s so beautiful, thanks Fred for reminding me of this masterpiece ❤
I have always loved John Martyn’s music, having been introduced to hi m back in the early 80’s, by an Irish boyfriend, I saw him twice, first in London when he was a young man, and Sweet Little Mystery was one of my favorite songs, still is. Then we saw him in Nottingham, and was so shocked to realize how badly life had treated him. I cried when Ken Bruce announced his death, shortly after that concert. So heartbreakingly sad, and his music, especially Sapphire, just touches my heart. RIP John x
Life didn't treat him bad. He treated himself badly with his acute alcoholism. And I will never overlook his beatings of his wife Beverly. The guy was an asshole in spite of his brilliance as a songwriter. It broke my heart to find out what kind of a person he really was.
My goodness this song brings back sooo many memories. Living in Camberwell, helping in the city. And a dog called Sam. If you know, you know. Happy days. ❤
i2020, ± 33yrs on earth tonight and yet this performance makes me wonder.. where in the UnIVERS was i....time goes by so slow and yet it still manages to catch up on your numb'd -skull -and bones- and leaves you behind just as suddenly, but i really enjoy'd making memories in the dust with you...
I had the sublime pleasure of seeing John solo in Liberty Hall Dublin, previous to this concert. What a talent, both in the song writing and singing genres -- and a true gentleman to boot. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis Iain (John Martyn was born Iain McGeachy) -- RIP John, gone, but never forgotten.
God Bless you John, A truly great talent has left us but you left us with great music and the greatest voice of our time.I saw you live on several times you always banished all my trobles just listening to you.
1987 ,,, the whole scene here with John ... cross legged plucking His Very Own Song on a Fender ,,, another non repeated moment in the time of man ... Love you John *
I met John as a young man at.a BBC theatre in London on the first day of radio 1 we were doing country meets folk he was a very funny guy and had us all in stitches!! Ifolled his career from then till he died, He will be greatly missed.
Singer-songwriter John Martyn has died at the age of 60. The folk, blues and funk artist was widely regarded as one of the most soulful and innovative singer-songwriters of his generation. (From BBC News) Goodbye john. You'll always be remembered by me and many thousands
Just that sweet little mystery that breaks my heart Just that sweet little mystery makes me cry O that sweet little mystery that's in your heart It's just that sweet little mystery that makes me try. My friends all tell me that I look so sad They don't need to ask me why They know the reason that I feel so bad Since the night you said goodbye It's not the letters that you just don't write It's not the arms of some new friend It's not the crying in the dead of the night That keeps me hanging on, waiting for the end. Just that sweet little mystery that's in your heart Just that sweet little mystery makes me cry Oh that sweet little mystery that's in your heart It's just that sweet little mystery that makes me try. I watch the street, I watch the radio I don't need to turn it on Another friend comes by and tries to say hello Another weekend's almost gone It's not the letters that you just don't write It's not the arms of some new friend It's not the crying in the depth of the night That keeps me hanging on, just waiting for the end. It's that sweet little mystery that's in your heart It's just that sweet little mystery that makes me cry Oh that sweet little mystery that's in your heart It's just that sweet little mystery that makes me try. The time is flying fast, and I don't care To spend another night alone I want to see you, but I don't know where Till then I'm walking on my own It's not the letters that you just don't write It's not the arms of some new friend It's not the crying in the depth of the night That keeps me hanging on, just waiting for the end. It's that sweet little mystery that's in your heart It's just that sweet little mystery that makes me cry Oh that sweet little mystery that's in your heart It's just that sweet little mystery that makes me try. That sweet little mystery that's in your heart It's just that sweet little mystery that makes me cry Oh that sweet little mystery that's in your heart It's just that sweet little mystery that makes me try. Sweet mystery, sweet mystery Sweet mystery, sweet mystery, sweet mystery Sweet mystery, sweet mystery, sweet mystery Sweet mystery, sweet mystery, sweet mystery.
Saw John a dozen times growing up in St. Andrews in the 70's. A unique and brillaint talent. We miss u John, but I am sure you have brought a little mystery with you to heaven...
How I have got to the age of 50 without discovering John before, gob-smacked...truly amazing, plays with his heart and soul, a new fan, I may be late to the party, although finally I have got there!
If you haven’t seen/heard him sing “Over the rainbow” , “Couldn’t love you more” or “Solid air” then I suggest you do (live versions are absolute genius) 👏💖
i was very sad to hear of the passing of john martyn , today , this song will all ways be john martyn , at his best for me , R I P , john and thanks for your lovely voice and songs , IRISH fan,,
the first time i heard this song was on the old grey whistle test , and it blew me away , its one of the nicest songs out there , and i cant believe i missed this in dublin , as im from dublin, his songs were from his heart, i was so sad to hear of his passing, R Ip , and thanks for your songs,,
Can't believe the news, only said to myself last night as i was listening to this song that i would love to see the MAN live. Never get the chance now. My loss i think. well I'll just listen and enjoy. Thanks John
Beverley his ex wife made a rather sad remark during an interview in which she said the biggest irony about John was that he wrote the most beautiful, sensitive, romantic and insightful songs but was incapable of actually living by such 'values' and always put himself first. She seemed so bitter and clearly was making the point that actions speak louder than words...or pretty songs! He may not have been good marriage material but I love his music and was glad to have seen him 'live' in the 80's.
Johns music has been the soundtrack to my life since I was 17. I first saw him in 1980. Bands have come and gone but for me, John has remained constant. R.I.P Big Man. Your music will stay with me forever. Missing you already. xx
Saw John 2-3 months ago for,I think the 30th time...As ever,a star...God love you John...Go into the big unknown with a JD and coke in one hand,a fat spliff in the other and that cherubic smile on your face.....Peace!
Johns songs have been the sound track to my life (post teens). A character, a genius and I will miss him. I am so sad. Rest in Peace John. We love you. x
I maintain a constantly changing list of my favourite songs in my head and on USB drives for the car. I've enjoyed doing this for years watching old favourites leave and new pieces take their place but a couple of track remain constant and this is one. Sheer genius and nice to note Phil Collins was on the original recording ....so he did do something right. Did he realise he had written a classic I wonder
Born in the 50's...influenced by psychedelia -like "Jefferson Airplane"- in late 60's/early 70's....and tonight--almost 50 years later the word STORMBRINGER popped out of my mind--leading to listen this most INNERfeeling song ......SO MUCH IN CONTRAST TO THIS NOWADAYS COLDHEARTED SOCIETY!!!!!! What a luck!!! Thanx John!!
Listened to the bbc2 radio 2 dedication to john and i still cant get over it. Its such a massive shame. He is one of those people you just dont think will die if that make sense.

No kidding!!! He's just so soulful. Love John's music a ton and this song says it all. The emotion, the honesty of feeling etc. It's all there and I love it!!! ❤️🌟✌️
But alcohol n all have sadly taken some of our greatest 😢...greatest everything's. RIP warm one ❤
His voice could melt, bend and shape the notes the way a glass blower turns molten glass into art.
dead right
Just beautifully put....
And he was an unbelievable Guitarist.
Beautiful - never could find the words so thank you
Spot on!!
Saw him many, many times during the late 80's and early 90's. Such an amazing talent. Much missed.
He did his last Album at Bones studio in Crawford John. Bone's sadly passed now too.
thx fred for introducing this masterpiece to me

I was there - it was miserable weather but JM was brilliant
Sweet little mystery in everyone's heart
He makes me cry because of his pure heart and truth. He heals me.
Presiona te hohn

@Michael Holme 'cose he touch the heart, I think
@Michael Holme capisco
Such a beautiful, angry, tortured soul. Rest in eternal peace John.
This is just an unbelievably good song. What a talent.
there's something about this music that shines through the fog; makes you appreciate life; talent; gone.
Michael Keane And even though he was a bit of a “bar steward”, he was adored and loved by many. His demise was self inflicted......x
Sorely overlooked and unfortunately forgotten artist. When it comes to sweet '80s ballads, this is the cream of the crop.
Agree, but Im 22 and I love Johns music, inspired me a lot :) Il make sure to play his music to my friends
Sir Psycho Sexy he isn’t forgotten yet !
A friend took me to a John Martyn gig as a birthday present in the late 90s, best birthday present ever because it give me a lifetime with John Martyns music, cheers Davey!

Other than 'slightly cracked' (a phrase with which I'm unfamiliar), I echo your sentiments entirely, Roger. John lives on. 💪🙏💐❤️
Same in 2020 in North Dakota

There's talent, and then there's John Martyn.... I love this man. Absurdly talented, yet down-to-earth, unlike so many of todays so-called 'stars'.
My goodness this song brings back sooo many memories. Living in Camberwell, helping in the city. And a dog called Sam. If you know, you know. Happy days. ❤
Life beats down and crushes the soul but John's music reminds us we have one.
I am obsessed with this song
Discovered this mans music tonight , there is something so soulful about the way he plays and how he sings, powerful.

Goodbye john. You'll always be remembered by me and many thousands
absolutely gorgeous
Was blessed to see you live
I really miss you John 🩷
Just that sweet little mystery that breaks my heart
Just that sweet little mystery makes me cry
O that sweet little mystery that's in your heart
It's just that sweet little mystery that makes me try.
My friends all tell me that I look so sad
They don't need to ask me why
They know the reason that I feel so bad
Since the night you said goodbye
It's not the letters that you just don't write
It's not the arms of some new friend
It's not the crying in the dead of the night
That keeps me hanging on, waiting for the end.
Just that sweet little mystery that's in your heart
Just that sweet little mystery makes me cry
Oh that sweet little mystery that's in your heart
It's just that sweet little mystery that makes me try.
I watch the street, I watch the radio
I don't need to turn it on
Another friend comes by and tries to say hello
Another weekend's almost gone
It's not the letters that you just don't write
It's not the arms of some new friend
It's not the crying in the depth of the night
That keeps me hanging on, just waiting for the end.
It's that sweet little mystery that's in your heart
It's just that sweet little mystery that makes me cry
Oh that sweet little mystery that's in your heart
It's just that sweet little mystery that makes me try.
The time is flying fast, and I don't care
To spend another night alone
I want to see you, but I don't know where
Till then I'm walking on my own
It's not the letters that you just don't write
It's not the arms of some new friend
It's not the crying in the depth of the night
That keeps me hanging on, just waiting for the end.
It's that sweet little mystery that's in your heart
It's just that sweet little mystery that makes me cry
Oh that sweet little mystery that's in your heart
It's just that sweet little mystery that makes me try.
That sweet little mystery that's in your heart
It's just that sweet little mystery that makes me cry
Oh that sweet little mystery that's in your heart
It's just that sweet little mystery that makes me try.
Sweet mystery, sweet mystery
Sweet mystery, sweet mystery, sweet mystery
Sweet mystery, sweet mystery, sweet mystery
Sweet mystery, sweet mystery, sweet mystery.
thanks

Listened to the bbc2 radio 2 dedication to john and i still cant get over it. Its such a massive shame. He is one of those people you just dont think will die if that make sense.
