I was at this gig and I'm visible near the front. This night changed my life, I just didn't know it at the time. It was seeing pics from this gig taken by a mate with a "proper" camera that inspired me to take up photography. It's been an enduring passion and led me on many adventures and to make new friends, including many performers. I photographed John a number of times, including his final gig in Glasgow, a couple of months before he died. I love his music.
What a lovely story. Would love to see your pictures if you’re able to share them!
A genuinely touching story. I'm glad you got to go full circle.
Get the pics oot Kenny boy!
Probably knew you kenny, if you knew hector and all ?

May all the God's love your wife and you , it's not easy by no means, your wife is with you now, keep going for her memory from Seamus and Lisa R I P
Thats beautiful, sorry for your loss
Hope you are doing well Russell.
Tears in heaven
Well, this black girl from LA just fell in Love with John Martyn. Was introduced to his music by my lovely Irishman. So his music will live on...
Well said , magic memory s , music lift s your soul from Seamus
Anyone listening in2024😊
Still luv johnny
I am, and will listen to him till the end of my days,
Just a few...........................millions

Yup
Some people from the acoustic/folk fraternity had a go at John for 'going electric'.. but as seen here - they knew not what the fuck they were on about.. The man will always stand out as a milestone in musical history.
100% correct, and no mistake.
I personally like the acoustic-folk John Martyn more, but this is undeniably well played and well put together. I guess this kind of arrangement is an acquired taste
John played for me in Hebden Bridge Picture House the night before. I had to drive all the instruments and gear on stage over 200ml to that hall. He leapt of that stage, ran across the hall and gave me a huge bear hug.
looks like he was enjoying the gig..I was there too being a huge fan of his music
Sound track for my adult life. Summer of '83, days spent working and surfing in Cornwall, used to pull a few cones in the evenings, a friend had a compilation tape of songs played nightly on cassette.. One song stood out, know one new who it was, annoyed us all season until early autumn when a friend walked in... "oh excellent John Martyn"... open mouths all round... Solid Air was bought next day... Few months later wandering around Canterbury early evening, walked past the Marlow theatre to discover JM on that night... first of many memorable gigs. This is sublime one of the very best... thanks for uploading, makes now a old man very happy.
He's quite special in the soundtrack of life to!!.....
Thank you for your kind comments. When I posted this I could never have imagined that John would pass away only a few weeks later. He was a true one off and will be sadly missed.
Nobody commenting on this for 2 years?....JM still/ will always be worth commenting on....some of the tributes below are touching, thanks fellow JM fans.
Johns music has been the soundtrack to my life since I was 17. Go down Easy Big Man. Missing you already...xx
Gone but never forgotten.
Jeez, this man had a whole lotta soul. A force of nature for sure. A fantastic solo artist and just fantastic in a band. Great songs, lovely, sweet voice. My big brother saw him with Phil Collins playing drums, forever jealous. Miss you Johnny boy x
John.....I'm sorry about the language 'BUT' I f3ckin' love ya.
da1698 I certainly don’t think he would have minded. In fact, he’s probably grab a hefty pint and raise a cheers to that!
John Martyn is one of my top favorite artists ever. Not sure why I love his music so much except he sings about his life and family with such love and devotion. His life was a hard one but he stayed so positive about it despite losing many parts of his body over the year to diabetes and being a hard core drinker. I highly recommend this documentary about him. Even the people who knew him could not quite fathom the love in his music and the seeming crazy mind and whatever he was covering up with alcohol. Beautiful soul in a life of difficult mental and emotional issues. I love this guy, God bless his soul...

I understand completely what you say. I’ve always loved John and his music but still struggle to reconcile the beauty and soul of his music with the troubled aggressive personal life he led. It’s a strange contradiction but I’m glad I found him and his music way back on the early 70s. He and Joni Mitchell saw me through so much over the years 😊
@@paulhoughton5164 I have found that god can live in any person. Its confusing but I see it often... The struggle is just god learning through that person. That what life is...
Sends me to another world
A sweet silky version of CLYM. Fine undertones avec bloosy/jazz...5 stars #
Amazing soul that was so special and so blessed with huge amounts of talent! I often feel angry with him as he was so destructive to himself but he’s been with me for decades along side Dylan Morrison and Drake! This is gorgeous off course!
I share your angst regarding his self destructive ways. Heartbreaking.
This is an amazing find! I first saw John in 1981 when this was filmed. To tell you the truth I had forgotten how good he sounded, how fabulous he looked and how much I enjoyed him despite the initial shock of seeing him front a band after many years solo/acoustic. As the memories come back it is painful as hell to know that you wont be seeing him again. Thanks to this video from the Rotters Club we can all re-live it. Thank you so much for posting and for making my day, week, month, year xx
"If you kissed the sun right out of the sky for me?
"And told me every lie I might deserve"
If you laid right down and died for me"
Well I couldn't love you more"
Best opening verse of any song, EVER!!
Loved big John, since he changed my life in 1996 and I'll never forget him for it.
Thanks for the memories John I will treasure them forever! x
An Incredible musician!
Saw him at Glastonbury (it was still a free festival) 78/79? Long time ago and other gigs
If you people like John give yourselves a treat and check out 'Roy Harper) another acoustic Genius, the British '(Dylan)!!!...
They can both create an unbelievable Sonic Storm!!..
Sublime. Such a beautiful song, sung with passion. Gorgeous
One of the most enjoyable funny tortured creative music genius's there was out there and, yes.., 'still'. He could fill a room with such incredible powerfully felt angst and sublime joy to the soul at the same time. He moved you. So loved so missed, he was what my gran would have called 'an old rascal.. with charm..' and he was but for most an absolute giant in musical terms, an everyman's man and friend.. At a concert you would so identify and feel with him. Why was he 'so' unhappy..? What drove him on.. ? That stage, a need to gig and just play and feel that love and appreciation flow back to him that he gave to us. God bless you John, gosh you're missed, always, but thankyou for all.. all those good times and nights shared. A light that shall never ever dim..
God Bless you theRottersClub, for posting this. Absolutely amazing. Great sound too. Good sound quality live videos of John Martyn, are actually hard to find, on youtube. You've put that right, and how, with one of my fave songs. Thanks. And...Good Night, John, R.I.P.
This is really a lovely version he looks well here JM Had Soul. Love you John. RIP
Awesome arrangement and performance.
This song will forever remind me of my beautiful ex wife Lisa.
I couldn't have loved her more.
I miss the damn woman to this day after 20 odd years..
I couldn't love this song more.
Utterly sublime... It's overtaken Steve Winwood's Can't find my way home as my favourite ever song. Yes we can derail on John's capacity to self-destruct but let's just stand in awe at a rare talent who still has the capacity to move us to tears with the majesty of his music...
12 years before this performance I was going out with this person called John Lewis who later became Jona Lewie. He was in a band called Brett Marvin and The Thunderbolts at the time. They had just played a gig in Manchester and we were on the train back to London when we heard music coming frim a few carriages down, It was a corridor train so we went to investigate. It turned out to be John Martyn and friend, we stayed with them for the rest of the journey and on reaching London were invited back to Johns pad which at the time was in a Mews in Chelsea. We jammed until the very late early hours. It was a night I will never forget. RIP the amazing John Martyn.
Sensational, embarrassed to say I never heard of John until this week. However have listened to a good few of his songs and they are amazing.
The first KM song I ever heard - with Phil Collins on drums! - it sort of changed everything - exquisite song as so many of them are.
JM that is!
His finest hour
I saw John Martyn for the first time a week later at the London ULU. Best version I've ever heard!
If I close my eyes... I can go back to the first time I ever heard John Martyn... Love at first note... I couldn't love you more big John...rip.
Me too. It was Solid Air. Then I couldn't get enough John Martyn, particularly the acoustic stuff. I later grew to love the jazzier John and saw him live just once at Glastonbury festival which was incredible even though he was really late coming on due to the usual JM issues, but it was a magical experience. A quasi-religious reverie, lost in the music.
@@_DrMoog_the album was gifted to me from the most beautiful man i’d ever known ❤️
I certainly prefer (and find more moving) the album version than this funky mix, but it's certainly well arranged and played!
i love this version of this song
Where can one purchase this concert, either CD or DVD? Anyone know? This concert is amazing!
This song is for my wife of 25 years may we have 25 more..... big blessings to couples and partners hoping they will have the same and more
Discovered John's music in a pub on Skye during a road trip of Scotland '09. What a find! Amelia, Cape Town, South Africa.
Immenso JM, glad to have seen you at Guilford University 1982/3 . What a great gig you gave us!
I saw him in a little church in Edinburgh back in 85 when John Wayne was one of the new songs...he and Danny were excuisite ..I still rate it as one of the best concerts ever...great Scottish musician,,,one of the few unique people !!
Shared this song so many times , at that moment in time I couldn’t love her more … Beautiful
it´s a pearl, lyrics and perfomance
i walked my wife down the aisle to this miss this guru already
Beautiful song x Beautiful soul xx
This is my first time hearing this version - really love the 80s vibe. Sends chills down my spine everytime.
It's on record twice. 1977 and 1982. One World and Glorious Fool.
I've seen the stones twice, bowie four times, the clash in lewisham at their very best, thin Lizzy the best band that ever graced the planet 4 times, and many others, but one special night in Aylesbury I saw this giant of a musical force and I dare say I might swap any of those to see this genius just one more time.
What an amazing upload! Its sometimes easy to forget how emotionally deep his performing was because he was such a hellraiser. I think the two went hand in hand....I don't think a sober John Martyn could ever given us such beautiful music.
such a beautiful voice and fabulous songwriter.
@myownservant - He's got a Fender Rhodes electric piano and a Prophet 5 synth. Mmm nice.
thanks for posting this glorious song,i saw him many times live and glad i did
Capolavoro senza tempo, troppo bella unico John, ci ha lasciato troppo presto.
Hi. I've just uploaded some more from this concert as well as a performance from 1978. Hope you like it?
What a great version of the song.i've never heard it with a full band...cheers for the upload!
I have listened to many versions on youtube of his "one world" songs. Well nothing comparable to what I heard on the record.
So congratulations to those musicians and to the producer as well.
Thank you for your kind words. It's a trully beautiful song and I'll never forget the good times I had listening to John's music.
I hope to post some more videos very soon.
please do mate, this JM is always on and gives an emotional take on beauty between lovers
When i listen to johns songs sometimes i hear a higher meaning to his voice like he is singing from what we call a soul, amazing i am humbled.
Very tight and in time and beautiful, but the sloppy passion filled one gets me everytime.. the one in rockoplast for example
great version of a big john classic.me an ma bro been in awe of the big man since 1980. miss him so much. rip.
Yep it really is! Find it, and more, on John Martyn "Live at the BBC" dvd. This is from Stirling University March 1981 and get your daily fix!
Still chillin’ with John, loved him since the early 70s😊❤🎶
I remember watching this at Cheney Hall of residence Oxford Poly - they had a common room and it was on. He played the Apollo (NEW) theatre loads over the years. Truely missed
I am John's biggest fan but think almost all of his output from 1980 onwards is garbage, including this rendition. Just don't get it
There were satellite's looking up at John Martyn during this performance.
Always love ya Johnny boy ….rest easy big man.
His performance of this song on 'The Man Upstairs' dvd is simply amazing as are his renditions of his other music. Amazing how much beer he puts away in that show though :)
Alan Thomsons Orange jumpsuit. Must be the earl '80's, I had a Green one, lol!
Capolavoro assoluto, meraviglia di un grandissimo artista...
❤ the Greatest I couldnt love You more Spencer a sweey little Mystery
Definitely the best version I've ever heard
I've listened to covers but nothing beats John's voice...
The bassist rocking the misfits costume before it was cool
give us a ring my dear friend
I was there! Roddy Scott 80 to 83, English N French
sublime, sweet, marvelous
Anytime, theRottersClub, anytime. BBC TV did some ace outside broadcasts of music events in Universities, etc, with Rock Goes to College and others. If there is any more John Martyn from this actual concert, don't be shy...post it! I have put "Martyn" + "Rock goes to College" into the dialog box in youtube...but this seems to be the only song. Any more?!! anyhow, if this all you have, it is more than enough. Superb sound fidelity. Thanks again.
Best version ... Of the best song ... ever ... what more is there to say . RIP big man
Love you John, Love you brother, can I forgive you for leaving? Sure, you left me with so much, how could I love you so much more? See you in that place that does not exist. Maybe we are all wrong, if so, mine is a whiskey and soda, leave the bottle on the bar. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The DVD I got suffers the flicker of the lights due to master tape issues.
it does not get better.
for anyone who has been in love.
and lost it.
Saw him at Stirling Uni a few years before this gig, when it was just him and his acoustic guitar. I couldn't believe the sounds that came out of that guitar.... It was a brilliant performance (after an impromptu scuffle with a daft student who invaded the stage...!)
still in love with him, thanks John
Few can/could play the guitar like John. No matter how drunk!
classic........... thanks John - grace and peace to your spirit
@TheRottersClub lol :)
