I think this live performance at Stirling, eventhough some of it was staged, was 10 times better than the album version produced by Phil Collins. Doesn't nearly have the same edge. r.i.p. John
I came here from the comment you left on the other video and i have to say that i agree 100%! Its crazy how over produced the album version is, it's like two completely different songs!
@@andrewmcmillan9916 Also came here from Orv's comment on the other recording of this tune. Gotta say i'm happy to enjoy both versions, myself. (Personally, i prefer the "over-produced" version -- but that's probably just because i'm a life-long Genesis fan and there's a certain familiarity between Phil's production on that other recording and a song of theirs called "Who Dunnit?". The Genesis song was a sort of throwaway piss-take nod to whole punk scene and there are a wealth of Genesis fans that like to throw shade on that particular track.) I'd heard of John Martyn before but this is my first time actually hearing his work, so the familiarity of that specific over-produced 1980's sound on the other recording probably primed me to favor it, if that makes sense..? E.g., i was sitting here listening to the Phil Collins-helmed version thinking "I might actually like this guy's song better than the Genesis track..." ;-)
@@keykrazy I can totally dig both versions! I do really like the studio version, but I love how smooth this live version sounds. That's quite an interesting point man, i'll be honest in saying that I haven't listened to much Phil Collins genesis (apart from the hits), but I'm mad for Peter Gabriel era genesis. I'll definitely check out "Who dunnit?", keeping in mind what you've said about it. I think having that kind of context can change what you think of a song. Cheers man!
Don't agree. I love the original. It's really rough and the drumming is uber aggressive. Sounded like they recorded it at Phil's house after a good drinking session. Live versions should always be stronger with a performer like John anyway. This is the best live version I've heard out of the three I found so far.
Superb tune and performance
Sublime
An incredibly inspired and under-rewarded talent.
good stuff

Preach, preach. The album version is pish poor in comparison!

Fantastic to see JM in 1981 on YT. What a treat
at his peak in the 80's
In what year was this concert?
This was 1981
I thank you.
