Respect for Kathy Mattea for so ably duetting with the wonderfully unpredictable Martyn! I first saw him live in Belfast in 1973 just after Solid Air was released. He had a filthy cold, was swigging Night Nurse, washing it down with whiskey, and was bloody superb!
What a spellbinding performance. He "never" played it better. Kathy makes it a marvelous duet. Danny and Jerry do what they do so well. Just the sheer enjoyment of the performance is terrific. Rarely all the planets align to produce something as special as this.
This kind of spellbinding performance from all of them, makes life worth living. JM what an absolute legend he was. If you ever feel down play this eh!
This must rate as the best rendition of "May You Never" ever recorded!!.....Kathy Mattea seems to have an electric relationship with John & the slide guitar is just sublime. Their reaction to what they have just produced at the end says it All!! John Martyn OBE....What a Man he was!!
This is like another life on another planet. I would rate it among one of the best performances ever done by anyone. And you are right, at the end they all knew it was something very special they had just done. If only someone could have saved Mr. Martyn at this point of his life, and stopped him destroying himself.
Yes and yes again !! I’m always watching this. rarely do I watch JM as I have a lots of JM to listen too. But there’s something awesome going on here besides the great music … probably great fun !!
That may well be the finest performance of any song I've ever heard, just in terms of the rich and harmonious interplay between each performer. And at the end, you can see they know it!
I saw John in concert several times in the early 70’s at the then New University Of Ulster in Coleraine Northern Ireland. He played in Lecture theatre One which was fully clad in wood and had great acoustics. His vocals and guitar technique literally blew my mind as to what a good songwriter and acoustic guitarist could produce. Looking back it looks like he was an early adopter of guitar loop effects to create a great depth of sound and atmosphere He always apologised for being under the weather having allegedly taken something to help him cope with the flight to get there. It didn’t matter, he was mesmerising in every way. Just a wonderful, talented man.
John Martyn, why couldn't save this tortured genuis. Never to be forgotten in my lifetime. And thank you for your support of local amateur musicians in the south west of Scotland. Some people cannot be saved! You have spoken to me John
Stood in the audience in the 70's in Bristol uni uk in awe this song. inspired me to play his style. Almost caught his joint when he tossed to the audience 😊
why people listen to today´s music crap escapes me. I am 65 so I was able to enjoy the early 70´s music which by the way is the best music ever, this is not an opinion, it is a fact. Listening to this song , you must be aware it cannot get any better. This is music from the soul, if they do not understand it, too bad for them, so the ones who love this, they are on the right track. Greetings from down south Barcelona, keep listening to good 70´s music(on l.p. of course).
Just wonderful, JM and Danny Thompson Mmmmm, with the beautiful voice of Kathy Mattea and the musicianship of Jerry Douglas. Doesn’t get a lot better!!!
My god, what an absolutely astonishing rendition of this wonderful song. I must have heard this recording a hundred times now and I’m still sitting here with tears on my cheeks. The even-numbered tears are sad but the odd ones are happy.
Awwwwwwww - bless him, the big fella and the little boy - all in one on this. I could watch this for ever. So beautifully done. I love the eye contact between players who are just enjoying how good each other is. And Danny - if you ever get bored and find yourself reading these things. THANK YOU TOO for everything you do. Not just with John, but with all the other old buggers I've seen you with over too many years. Love you fellas. Sleep well John.
Both Scotland and Ireland have borne some beautiful and creative talents, but this man was simply unique, in every sense of the word, a sublime song writer and fabulous talent -- Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis -- RIP John --
Oh, wow. Oh, wow. Crying as I type this, and that's no lie. I've listened to John for 40 years, but I've never heard such relaxed, cool perfection between 4 musicians at the top of their game. Beautiful vocal harmonies, John an' Danny, Kathy's beautiful harmonies, and that Dobro! It don't get no better than this!
I listen to this, every night, then lay down for a night's sleep.Watching & listening to the unbridled joy of making music that touches the soul, somehow puts the day's cares aside.
This is a great version of this track - probably my favourite. John is really into it here and all of them are enjoying themselves. You can see that Kathy is really beguiled by John. And Martyn's and Thompson's relationship is a match made in heaven. Rest in peace in that far better place John. A real wordsmith I'll miss you from one big man to another!
I've been listening to this video about one a month for years. Can't get enough of it. The song itself, Martyn's voice, Thompson's bass runs, Douglas' dobro and Mattea's subtle but spot on harmony not to mention the sound mix and the photography. Kids, it doesn't get any better than this.
Around this time I got in to a bar room fight with John Martyn, (He lost his temper!) Didn't stop me appreciating his immense talent. Had a big influence on my songwriting and playing. Have a listen.
I asked Kathy about this session and this recording in particular. She smiled, and "let slip" that a lot of whisky had been drunk. Fantastic recording of a great song.
Can a performance get any more sublime than this? Breathtakingly brilliant. Thanks John et al. You were always good in the Half Moon in Putney but never (as I remember) this good....must have been the fault of the beautiful Young's beer.
Isn't this just a marvellous rendition of May You Never?.......This is the way I remember John......not in his latter years.. I met him once & his handshake was firm!!!!! A Real Man THe Big Man!! Doug Reid
How do you strip up a masterpiece that's already stripped back beauty?. Yet, somehow, this may be even more beautiful than it's original version. A massive loss to songwriters everywhere. RIP big man.
Here comes the gigantic version, utterly beautiful, played and sung to perfection.
What you just witnessed there ladies and gentlemen, was pure fucking genius.
Agreed
yep every single fucking note....take it to the church JM says as they wind it up! PFG is right!
i agree
John,The Patron Saint for the broken hearted ...Still listen to him every day .My hero
"I liked that one ..."
We all did, John. RIP...
Danny Thompson is a king.
It must be wonderful to be present when magic happens. Rest in peace, John Martyn.
bless the beautiful John Martyn
The little dance John does at the end brings so much joy
John Martin was simply the most beautiful musician - and this track says it all.
What a spellbinding performance.
He "never" played it better. Kathy makes it a marvelous duet. Danny and Jerry do what they do so well.
Just the sheer enjoyment of the performance is terrific. Rarely all the planets align to produce something as special as this.
Frank Murray : Well said sir
@Frank Murray +1 - yours are the words I was looking for, thank you.
This kind of spellbinding performance from all of them, makes life worth living. JM what an absolute legend he was. If you ever feel down play this eh!
Yes- it's sublime, and I love seeing them all acknowledge how magically beautiful it was ! They knew!
This must rate as the best rendition of
"May You Never" ever recorded!!.....Kathy Mattea seems to have an electric relationship with John & the slide guitar is
just sublime. Their reaction to what they have just produced at the end says it All!!

Man, they are in the zone! And Jerry, perfect!
It's my favourite one
The genius that was John Martyn.
That may well be the finest performance of any song I've ever heard, just in terms of the rich and harmonious interplay between each performer. And at the end, you can see they know it!
I cry some nights for the loss of this great man. I'm crying now.
+Mickey McDonnell me to.

One word for this........ BEAUTIFUL.
Superb. A treasure. Thanks for sharing.
Hugely respectful performance from Kathy Mattea.
John Martyn was an original. You could tell he felt the music. God bless him. He is missed.
This is what you get when 4 talented musicians start with a superb song and play for themselves. Perfection.

Sometimes the planets just align and pure magic happens. One of my all time favourite moments in musical history.
four superb musicians made this simple song into a work of art.
Step right out of this world into solid air, big man....RIP your music touched my heart and soul, and many others, what an unforgettable voice.
John is the man! Danny Thompson is a living legend!
Danny Thompson at his very best, and his finish, unbeatable!
Absolutely beautiful
Kathy Mattea must be so proud to have performed on this with two absolute icons.
To see him that happy at the end!
This is a brilliant version. I play it constantly.
After all these years...still a beautiful performance.
A little piece of heaven captured here.
I keep coming back to this. Musical perfection!
Often come back to this just see the fun everyone is having !!!
Simply sensational. JM has such a wonderful talent and Kathy compliments him beautifully on one of my favourite all time songs.
Simply brilliant from start to finish. May you never underestimate the genius of this man.
Ehhhhhhh he's dead
the buill : I know that you moron. Doesn't make him any less of a genius.
..and Danny Thomson's bowed bass at the end, what an ending!
Stood in the audience in the 70's in Bristol uni uk in awe this song. inspired me to play his style. Almost caught his joint when he tossed to the audience 😊

Totally agree - saw him twice as he was from my home town of Lancashire, very sad that drugs got him in the end
Absolutely fabulous.
A piece of true brilliance. Love and peace.

Stunning, RIP one of the greatest!
Delightful, everyone’s doing their thing. Great version and the big man knows it!
Just wonderful, JM and Danny Thompson Mmmmm, with the beautiful voice of Kathy Mattea and the musicianship of Jerry Douglas. Doesn’t get a lot better!!!
4 musicians at the top of their game-truly mesmerising.
Just keep listening to this wonderful version of a great song!
Kathy Mattea.. one of the most unique voices I've heard.
HATS OFF TO Kathy for watching and following John's many changes and keeping perfect step
Keep Johns memory alive by listening to these amazing musicians at work
One of the most powerful performers ever. Awesome.
I keep coming back to this redition. Sheer genius! I've been singing this one for 50 years and have no plans to ever stop!
Mad as a cat [on coke] but Jesus could he write, sing and play ... wonderful... and apparently 117 people are dead inside ..
God bless the man, that walks the land, bring happiness and love, with his stringed instrument.

Anything Thompson's on is wortha listen, possibly the most underrated musican/ arranger of all time...
A song to listen to when you feel a little sad and lost.....
Thanks again for sending Terry, this song realy touches me.
Hello Dirkje
Celebrates everything that is joyous about the interaction between brilliant musicians. I keep coming back to experience it again.
Well said; it really is just like that.
Thumbs up if this is one of the most joyful five minutes you've spent :D
Thank you so much for sharing . Love this song and the performers. God bless everyone from Patrick
Around this time I got in to a bar room fight with John Martyn, (He lost his temper!) Didn't stop me appreciating his immense talent. Had a big influence on my songwriting and playing. Have a listen.
Fabulous. I go to this for comfort. This is the height to which the human spirit should aspire.
John Martyn... the sound track of my adult life...
I asked Kathy about this session and this recording in particular. She smiled, and "let slip" that a lot of whisky had been drunk. Fantastic recording of a great song.
Yeah, Jerry's break is a little sloppy, it sounds like. Good for them, though, taking it to the church
Also, his little jig of pleasure at the end is priceless!
I am lovin this - a beautiful duet!!!!!
Can a performance get any more sublime than this?
Breathtakingly brilliant.
Thanks John et al. You were always good in the Half Moon in Putney but never (as I remember) this good....must have been the fault of the beautiful Young's beer.

Still makes me smile no matter how many times I watch, John, Kathy and Danny's faces nail it.
First time I've seen this. So wonderful. Very emotional.
How do you strip up a masterpiece that's already stripped back beauty?. Yet, somehow, this may be even more beautiful than it's original version. A massive loss to songwriters everywhere. RIP big man.
