    I saw John Martyn so many times - sometimes two or three nights in a row. I met him once at a Radio promo recording in Lothian Road in Edinburgh, and one afternoon, bizarrely I was listening to John Martyn with my window wide open and he walked past my flat into the pub across the road. Amazing, amazing music from what appears to be a tortured soul. This was his outlet. And it is utterly incredible.

  • @OriginalLHB
    @OriginalLHB 5 лет назад +6

    Picking out John Martyn's most beautiful songs is well nigh impossible, but this song - and especially this performance - has a better claim than average. I imagine John is playing this on a regular basis for the Angels in Heaven. It's not of this world. Beauty overload.
    As Richard Thompson wrote "God Loves a Drunk." And as he also wrote "Maybe That's Just the Price You Pay For the Chains You Refuse." As an alcoholic I don't believe most of us are searching for oblivion, we're searching for ecstasy.
    John Martyn hit the mark. The best I can do is love the man and his music.

    I remember watching this on 'The Apprentice' VHS video. I had the pleasure of seeing John Martyn at Ritzy's nightclub in Aberdeen with keyboard player + drum machine in 1989. It was a tiny place. I also saw JM in Cambridge at The Junction when it was a beer stained gig venue. He had the full band, including saprano sax player and real drummer! That was a terrific gig. He was so into it playing Angeline that he could hardly speak. Such an emotional performer! I remember the 'Poland' keyboard!

    One of my top JM favourite songs, and this may just be my favourite rendition ever; Im listening as I write. Absolutely beautiful. To me, music doesnt come any better than this-and a masterclass in guitar from two exponents who utilise the electric guitar to create atmosphere. In that respect, their approach to the guitar is similar (as Gilmour hinted in the pre TV interview). Im glad Gilmour is still around. There was only one John Martyn and he will not be replaced. This is a genuine classic.

    A lot of creative artists have troubled lives just look back.I was lucky to see John 3 times and he was never short of amazing, unique ,inspirational and I always left vowing to set fire to my guitars.Now in later life I am learning some of his songs from various tutorials.Wow what a man .Agree he is to under rated.Love to hear you later.

    There was a day a long time ago when I remember spending the weekend a John and Annie's cottage. That old tiny church were we played around with music before Annie died. John is gone now too but we still remember the beautiful copper guitar he gave us as a wedding gift.

    This can't be an easy tune to play live, there are so many different colors of sound and harmonies.

    Oh, This irascible man...such a bugger to get on with...such an angel...such wonderful singing...and with the master of the bends...his Gilmourness...Oh...if I die listening to this I'd be happy.....would somebody buy me an echoplex? Love You all......this song reminds me of Steve Place for some reason....look him up if you want a bespoke YURT...he's such a sweet guy...BXXX.
